Stars and You

Amber eyes sparkled as they watched the shore come closer and closer and the young woman seemed like she might vibrate right out of her skin in excitement. They had planned this for so long and while it hadn’t happened exactly as they had imagined, this was the part that seemed to match her expectations the closest. As the gangplank was lowered she reached down and tugged at her boots. Brilliant turquoise hues looked down at her in confusion and the voice that never failed to comfort her in dark times asked, “Chrys-tan, what are you doing?” She beamed up at him as she held the boots in one hand and grabbed his hand with her other. “I want to feel the ground on my feet with our very first steps on Eorzea.” She tugged him forward, pulling him along as she ran down the gangplank, excited to start this part of their adventure together.

It was still dark and Chrys thought they were going to have to climb. She rubbed a bit of sleep out of her eyes and was about to protest when Zollo grabbed her hand and gently pulled her to the side of the small outcrop. There was an easy path that wound to the top. She followed him up and when he sat at the top, so did she. They stared out across the large plateau known as the Steppe, with the mountains of the Raen behind them, two misfits just high enough to see over the tents of his tribe. She gave him a questioning look but he nodded back out and her face turned just in time to see the sky go from just the barest of light to fire at what from here looked like the very edge of the world. He knew she’d never really watched a sunrise before and he smiled when she took in a small gasp at the beauty of it. She leaned her head against his arm and they stayed there, in companionable silence, until their families started calling for them to come start the days duties.

Sana was alone. She was happy to be midwifing. It filled some of the hole that she never thought about having. She’d never thought about having children but now… being unable to have them.. it occurred to her a lot. Her eyes and fingers found the lighter pieces of skin on her abdomen, contemplating how quickly the option had been taken from her. Before she even knew she wanted it.

Aliiza reported for work on a ship. One she hadn’t been on before. Every time, she sighed inwardly, the person checking her in cataloged her in their brain. Every time, they got past her face just fine, but when they noticed her scar traveled down more of her body, there was a pause. Had they been able to see more, they would have known it covered a path down almost her entire left side. Sometimes… sometimes they asked. Mostly that earned them a glare and a question of if they wanted to find out for themselves how she’d earned it.
