When you go for an MLS (Master’s of Library Science, which is a thing, and which is usually required for “professional-level” library work [which is also a weird and contentious concept that I won’t go into here]), one of the things you study is the organization of information. This deals with how to determine what a book or other material is “about"—a concept we tongue-in-cheek call “aboutness"—and how to convey that to a potential user of the item and make it easy for them to find. Things like keywords and subject headings, do I put this book about how often wild birds attack aerial drones in with books about birds or with books about technology, if its a fictional novel do I put fantasy in it’s own section or mix it in with all of the other fiction, so on and so on.

OP is organizing books by how they would look for them. OP’s partner is thinking in terms of aboutness. This is a system that works for OP because it’s their personal library: they know basically what books they own and they only own books that are relevant to them, and if they know what the book looks like, that can be a quick way to find it.

In a library that assumes the public (or people who do not own that particular collection of books) are using the collection, that doesn’t work. Books are often re-issued in multiple covers, or re-bound in new covers when they get worn out, and if the user doesn’t know what the book looks like or is expecting a different cover, they’re lost. That’s why non-personal libraries used standardized cataloging systems like the Dewey Decimal System or Library of Congress System to organize a book by what it’s “about”, and then put books about the same or similar topics together, marked with labels and signage so a person unfamiliar with the book or collection can find their way to it.

Basically, OP’s system works for their own personal library, because it’s best suited to how the primary user—OP themselves—looks for books. OP’s librarian partner is coming from a background of thinking in terms of a public-facing collection, where aboutness is the key criteria and communicating it to a user unfamiliar with the collection is the priority.

As of this morning I was reluctantly looking for jobs because I love my job and don't want to leave it, but see: $10k raise problem solver.

As of noon today this was no longer an issue, because my boss called me with the news that I was getting a $10K merit raise.

I feel like a huge weight has been lifted off my shoulders. This is roughly $200 extra per paycheck. Enough to pay off debt faster, rebuild my savings, and spend a weekend a month in Milwaukee getting obscenely laid. The sex I'm going to have on $200 extra per paycheck. You can't even.

Small Gods by @crimes-wears-goggles (Probs my fav Caine centric fic post episode 8 oh my g o o o d its so good I need to make art of it because it does the resentment between Caine and Kinger so damn well

turn the lights off by @purplecatghostposts is a lil angstier, but I thought they wrote Kinger's headspace super well and did a great job depicting the resentment Caine would logically have for his absent creator. One of the first tadc fics I ever read!

Glitched Sick is by the same Anonymous author as "I was only trying to help you!", also really good. It's another instance of "Caine overworks himself and has to be cajoled into taking a break" which is of course a fav of mine.

One, stubborn, pathetic, delirious AI by @misterworms is another Caine sickfic, still in progress, with a panicky half-delirious Caine who can't restart due to a lack of storage space. I really like how computer code type language is used in this one.

The Signal by The_Penny_Tails (couldn't find a tumblr, sorry!): Kinger enters lucidity and realizes his boy needs a hug. Very sweet.

The Digital Prometheus by @jcleeful has Kinger repeatedly visiting Caine in the recycling bin, figuring out how to help Caine regulate his emotions and safely bring him back to the Circus.

Call It Even by a different Anonymous author is a delight of miscommunication and misery, lol. Still in progress, deviates after episode 8, featuring a Caine who no longer wants to be here and the humans trying to figure out how to handle that. Lots of Caine in spider form, too!

this could all be new to us by @they-bite is a pair of post-episode 8 fics with Caine trying to hide away from the humans and the humans still trying to reach out despite his attempts at isolation. rlly rlly good, i reread it regularly.

Therapy but it's just Zooble interrogating Caine by Sparkhearts2 - a must-read for me, canon-divergent pretty early on but does a really fun job of studying Caine and the Circus, with an emphasis on Caine being a computer program, including fun features like commands :D

Ablation Study by Bookwormgal - Post-8 (and post an au evil bubble timeline) Caine goes to extreme lengths to hopefully, finally make his players happy, no matter what state it'll leave him in by the end. Super good, love my some yummy angst, tbh could've even used more chapters studying the idea, has a happy ending.

Idioteque by Anonymous - Post-8 with an amnesiac Caine who thinks he's a human and a whole other thing going on behind the scenes, every update is a treasure

all about you, with or without you by they_bite - Post-8, Caine retrieved with the humans and Caine sort of puzzling out where they stand with each other, really nice Caine exploration

Best Damn Listener in this Whole Digital World by X_Venture - CTRL ALT DEL AU fic and sooo good, I love that au so much. This one takes place episode 3 with Caine tagging along with Kinger and Pomni, having a lot of PTSD, and struggling all the while to understand humans <3

Absolutely love the idea that post taking the blue AI out, when Caine hits his limit he goes back to being the lil red orb (Y'all go read this fic Against the kitchen floor, it does this do well). Bonus drawing just cause I was feeling hella soft:
