Imagine if you will:
Bittyâs post-kiss conversation with his parents goes better than heâd feared, though they need some time to adjust to the triple surprise of âour son is gay,â âour son is dating a rising NHL star,â AND âwe learned about it on national tv.â
Yet the next time Jackâs in Madison, he and Bitty canât help but notice that Coachâs behavior toward him has⌠cooled. Heâs not overtly rude or dismissive, but the effusive welcome of Jackâs first visit is nowhere to be found. It hurts, knowing that Coachâs regard was conditional.
Jack tells Bitty itâs no big deal, but Bitty sees right through that, like always. Heâs not up to confronting Coach directly, but he hauls Jack into the kitchen while Suzanneâs making dinner and demands to know what the heck Coachâs problem is.
Suzanne laughs and says, âOf course heâs standoffish. Oh, it was all well and good when we thought Jack was just your friend, Dicky. Now that we know heâs your boyfriend, your daddy canât be too nice âtil heâs sure Jackâs good enough for you.â
Bittyâs appalled. Given Jackâs challenging relationship with his own dad and the endless criticism of sports journalists, what a blow it must be to hear that his boyfriendâs father doesnât think heâs âgood enoughâ (to say nothing of the fact that he should be the judge of that, not Coach, thank you very much).
But, no, Jack is over the moon. Because finally, after almost two decades of being judged on something he has no control overâthe fact that heâs not Bobâsomeone is judging him by a standard he actually has a say in. I mean, obviously heâs also terrified, because heâs not always sure heâs good enough for Bitty, either, but he gets this. Heâs got this.
anyway i still think that coach is going to handle bittyâs coming out better than suzanne is and help suzanne come to grips with it and then in typical dad fashion tell bitty he loves him v gruffly and in a v roundabout way lmao
like this?Â
YES
Bitty and Suzanne have stuff to work through but itâs not because heâs gay but because he has really broken their relationship.
ok uh hereâs the thing. bitty hasnât âreally broken their relationship.â like, ik what youâre saying here, but itâs really not that great to put the blame for this completely on bitty, when in the comic he did not feel safe or comfortable coming out to his mother. and it might not necessarily be suzanneâs fault at all, but bittyâs absolute terror re: coming out to his parents doesnât mean that this is because of him
he grew up in the south (which is like openly homophobic), itâs understandable that even if suzanne hadnât done anything to make him think she was homophobic bitty wouldnât necessarily feel safe coming out to her. this isnât bitty âbreaking the relationshipâ itâs a canonically gay character being scared to come out to his parents and then them finding out
i agree with you that bitty and suzanne are going to need to work things out and iâm 100% sure that she still loves her son dearly and would do anything for him. all iâm saying is that suzanne is definitely going to be more affected by this bc she was closer to bitty vs coach.
to save space comment below cut
We donât have a clear reason why he didnât come out to his mother. Just because he doesnât want to come out doesnât necessarily mean he doesnât feel safe. Coming out is complex. In Simon Vs./ Love, Simon, his hesitancy to come out wasnât because he didnât feel safe, he was supremely loved and supported, but it was a new thing, a pretty huge new thing, and it was daunting.
South = homophobic, thatâs a pretty broad brush youâre painting with there. Yeah Bitty undoubtedly dealt with homophobia, but that doesnât automatically connote that his parents are homophobes or bigots and as far as Iâve seen in the comic, his parents havenât said or done anything to imply that.
Bitty hurt his mom. A lot. He never gave her a chance. And now heâs kissing his boyfriend after the Stanley Cup, hugging Alicia, ignoring his momâs calls. That would be like jamming a knife in her heart and then twisting it.
Right before this, he didnât tell his mom that he wasnât coming home for summer until the last minute. This was his last summer before graduation and she must have been looking forward to it and treasuring it and he just *shrug* âgonna live with a friend instead momâ. Pretty dickish.
Being afraid to come out doesnât absolve Bitty of the collateral damage heâs done and Suzanne doesnât deserve to be thrown under the bus like sheâs some bigoted homophobe. Sheâs a mom who is close to her son and doesnât understand why heâs pulling away and he didnât give her a chance.
I donât mind that Bitty is doing some pretty awful hurtful things. Itâs good story telling and makes him real. Heâs got stuff to fix. Thatâs okay.
okay this is. wow.
first off, my original post wasnât talking about bitty coming out it was talking about how differently coach and suzanne are going to react to learning that bitty had kept something from them.Â
secondly, bitty had a /panic attack/ when he tried coming out to his mother recently. he might not feel unsafe, but he is 10000% not comfortable with the concept of coming out, and thatâs okay. i could have members of my family tell me to my FACE that they arenât homophobic and i still wouldnât want to come out to them because i know it would change our relationship. but no go ahead and tell me, a bi person, more about how coming out is complex.Â
bitty is from a small town in southern georgia. saying the south is more likely to be homophobic and racist is not âpainting it with a broad brushâ or whatever the shit its just reality? im not saying the /entire/ south is homophobic. also i literally am not throwing suzanne under the bus at all and i literally said that i didnât think she was homophobic? i love suzanne. sheâs a fantastic mom if a little overbearing. coach might be distant but nowhere ever did i say that his family wasnât supportive of him, or wouldnât be supportive of him coming out. thatâs not the point
âhe never gave her a chanceâ ... again, he almost came out to her and then panicked before he could. thereâs a reason, logical or not, behind why he didnât want to come out to suzanne. also, someone doesnât deserve your coming out. you donât owe it to another person to come out to them. suzanne from what we see has been nothing but supportive of her son but that doesnât = bitty being forced/expected to tell her that heâs gay.Â
the summer thing is a stupid argument iâm sorry but bitty is a senior in college he doesnât owe his parents staying at home? i only went home for the summer one time when i was at school. itâs fine if suzanne is hurt by that but bitty isnât being a dick by not going home during the summer. hes 20/21 years old, heâs an adult who can make his own decisions. her seeing him hug the parents of his boyfriend who were literally at the game because their son is on the team shouldnât be that big of a deal, and it probably isnât to her.Â
iâm not saying suzanneâs feelings are invalid. but when youâre an lgbtq+ person, you simply donât know how the people around you are going to react if you come out, even if they arenât homophobic. itâs ok for suzanne to feel upset that bitty didnât come out to her, but that doesnât automatically mean that bitty needs to apologize for it or feel bad that he didnt. you wanted to use love simon as an example, ok, lets. âcoming out was supposed to be my thingâ => suzanne is not entitled to have a personal moment when bitty came out to her. bitty came out his way and he doesnât need to apologize for that?Â
im not saying itâs all suzanneâs fault. im not saying itâs all bittyâs fault. reducing it to a âits his fault or her fault!â storyline is incredibly reductive and doesnât do justice to the storyline. its a complicated situation that they are going to need to work through because there are individual issues on both sides that need to be worked out
anyway i still think that coach is going to handle bittyâs coming out better than suzanne is and help suzanne come to grips with it and then in typical dad fashion tell bitty he loves him v gruffly and in a v roundabout way lmao

One of the things I enjoy the most about Check, Please! is the fandom. Every other fandom Iâve been a part of (be it Supernatural, MCU, etc.) has been highly toxic and I didnât feel like I could talk to other people for fear of being yelled at about the discourse of the day.
But the Check, Please! fandom is so kind and welcoming and approachable and creative! Itâs so refreshing! Each and every person in this wonderful fandom is incredible and I appreciate the hell out of all of you.
LMAO I fear this post isnât going to age well
