ALL RADQUEERS AND INCEST LOVERS WILL BE BOILED ALIVE IN HOT OIL AND THEIR FLESH WILL BE CONSUMED
Reblog if you're bored and you want anons.
Or non-anons. Whatever works for you!
Do Marauders apologists think the sexual assault was justified? Or do they just pretend it didn't happen?
When Marauders apologists talk about how much James grew up and changed, and how Lily wouldn't have dated him otherwise, they somehow always ignore that Lily already had a canonical crush on James when he was still publicly abusing Severus.
It's mind-boggling how hypocritical they get about it too, they know they don't have an excuse for it and try to throw Severus under the bus.
"Snape joined a racist group!"
That word has a different meaning than they seem to think it does. It was discriminative and he was groomed for years into joining. Both by the hundreds of Slytherins he roomed with, and the Gryffindors around him that made him suffer and alienated him from everyone else.
"Snape bullied children!"
No? He was just a strict teacher who made angry remarks at his students. He was bad at teaching, that doesn't make him a bully.
"He outed Lupin as a werewolf!"
After Lupin almost murdered five people. Three of which were students. He had already warned those students on how deadly a werewolf could be and how to differentiate one from an actual wolf.
Yet they never want to talk about how James ganged up on, abused, and sexually assaulted a schoolmate because he "existed".
They always say that James "grew up" and "changed for the better", like, no? Their only proof is what James's best friends say when talking to James's son, which is just that he "got better", or that Lily wouldn't have dated him otherwise.
Again, Lily already had a crush on James and defended him to his victim when James was his known abuser, are we really supposed to accept that as proof of his character development?
I'm not a fan of the Marauders, but I would say I disagree with some points here. Sometimes, Snape did far more terrible things than James did.
Let's be realistic here. Why would we talk about the idea of "why Lily dated the boy who used to bully her childhood friend," but not ask, "why Snape joined the group that murdered people like his childhood friend?" I mean, if ur best friend defends or justifies using Dark Magic against a student and constantly calls people like u racist insults, that would surely mean something.
James wasn't a good person either. He was a bully, right, but so was Snape! The difference is that James was a child who bullied children, while Snape was an adult who bullied children.
U cannot just say, "Snape was just a strict teacher." No, he was a bully. JK Rowling herself said that, and we saw it many times in the books.
I mean, a strict teacher wouldn't be the biggest fear of a child whose parents ended up in a mental hospital because of torture. A strict teacher wouldn't insult his students and make fun of them just bcs they are from Gryffindor, like the boys who used to bully him at school.
Snape threatened to poison Neville's pet toad, Trevor. He also mocked Hermione when her teeth were cursed by Malfoy to grow past her chin, telling a crying teenage girl, "I see no difference." This is intentional emotional cruelty, not strict teaching.
And yes, James became a better person. Maybe not the best person ever, but he did become better. First, it's true that Lily had a crush on him, maybe even before their fifth year (just like many girls their age at school), but she didn't go out with him until their seventh year, and that must mean something. If it had been just about Snape, she would have done that in their sixth year.
Furthermore, Sirius never claimed James became a flawless saint. He honestly admitted that while James genuinely matured and stopped hexing people for fun, his mutual feud with Snape and his gang continued. If Sirius just wanted to blindly defend his best friend, he would have lied and said James stopped fighting entirely. The fact that he acknowledged James's lingering grudge actually proves he was telling the truth about his overall character development.
And If we want to talk about impartial judges, let’s look at Dumbledore. Dumbledore knew exactly what was going on in his school. If James hadn't genuinely matured and changed his ways, Dumbledore would never have appointed him as Head Boy in his seventh year. You don't give the highest student leadership position to someone who is still an active, cruel bully. Furthermore, in The Deathly Hallows (The Prince's Tale), whenever Snape bitterly claimed that Harry was arrogant and mediocre just like his father, Dumbledore consistently pushed back. Dumbledore recognized James's flaws but ultimately saw a man of immense bravery, loyalty, and love—someone he trusted enough to recruit directly into the Order of the Phoenix straight out of school.
And let's see: James joined the Order to fight Voldemort. He risked his life to save people. Meanwhile, Snape joined the Death Eaters, the group that killed people just bcs they were Muggles or Muggle-borns.
Snape wasn't just "groomed for years into joining" by Slytherins and was alienated by Gryffindors. Snape arrived at Hogwarts already deeply fascinated by the Dark Arts, knowing more hexes than half the seventh-year students. He wasn't just a passive victim of peer pressure; he actively invented dark spells like Sectumsempra. Lily explicitly warned him about his friends (Mulciber and Avery) and their cruel behavior, but Snape actively chose to stay with them and excuse their actions.
Just for the record, Snape is actually my absolute favorite character in the entire series. But I can love a character while still acknowledging their flaws. What makes him such a brilliant and compelling character is exactly the fact that he is morally grey. Trying to paint him as a flawless, innocent victim actually ruins what makes his redemption arc so interesting in the first place.
No he did not. None of these are worse than public sexual assault or hurting your victim only when your girlfriend isn't looking so she'll think you've stopped doing it. No one forced James to hurt anyone, no one forced him to molest a schoolmate, no one forced him to use illegal hexes on a schoolmate (Bertram Audrey).
Let's be realistic here, I'd rather be friends with a guy that joined a cult and then got out of it, than to date a guy that sexually assaulted and tormented the first guy for years and felt no remorse.
By the time Snape was fifteen he'd been living with HUNDREDS of pure-blood Slytherins telling him over and over that the Dark Lord is the key, Muggleborns are called Mudbloods, muggles are worthless, they're just trying to make magical Britain great again, and that these are facts of life.
Imagine being exposed to this bullshit at the young age of 11.
He's friends with Lily so obviously he doesn't think "Every single one of them has been lying to me for years." Instead, he thinks: "Well, Lily isn't like that, she must be an exception to this rule."
James was a sexual assaulter who was friends with an attempted murderer. By the time James leaves Hogwarts he's no longer a child but shows no remorse over any of this.
I still don't think Snape was a bully but maybe I'm just bad at telling when something is funny and when something is offensive, most jokes are both, so it's hard to tell.
JKR said it, but she's so bad at keeping her facts consistent, I don't trust her words. (Cursed Child)
Not Neville's boggart again. I have a post about this. Boggarts don't turn into your biggest fear! They turn into what it thinks will make you go away. Do you think Remus is afraid of the moon? Hermione of McGonagall? Should we make a post about her too?
Snape has never made comments about a student "just for being in Gryffindor".
Snape can see a botched potion and tell which step went wrong, giving it to a toad was such a calculated risk there was no risk at all.
His comment to Hermione was wrong but I didn't think it was cruel, just insensitive. It was wrong, but people like to make it seem like it's proof he's the devil incarnate.
Oh wow James became better, he stopped molesting and only hexed his victim when his girlfriend wasn't looking. No it doesn't mean anything! Other than Lily not being the saint people like to make her up to be. She dated the guy that sexually assaulted her best friend. She knew what he did, what he was like, and she still tried to defend James to his own victim back when James was his known abuser and Sirius had just tried to kill Snape, she didn't even seem concerned that he'd been in a life-threatening situation!
Sirius is biased against Snape and biased in favor of James. Because he hates Snape and loves James. And every "good" information given about James the Sexual Offender is given to James's son by James's friends.
Dumbledore made Draco Malfoy a prefect when he still went around calling schoolmates Mudbloods.
He made Remus Lupin a prefect when he was still publicly best friends with a group of bullies and he didn't stop being a prefect after his friends sexually assaulted a student in front of him and he did nothing.
Yes, James was brave and capable of love. And also capable of abuse and molestation. Dumbledore is biased. Everyone knows he's biased.
He also recruited Sirius, despite knowing he'd tried to kill Snape when he sent him to that werewolf.
James risked his life to save people!? SNAPE RISKED HIS LIFE TO SAVE PEOPLE!
For years! With no recognition of what he'd done! He tried to protect the Stone, he tried to save Harry from Quirrel, he tried to save Draco from Voldemort, he tried to save Dumbledore from an inevitable death curse. He did it all!!
Are you actually quoting Sirius words about Snape as proof? Snape was a half-blood that lived in a muggle neighborhood in an abusive home with a father that hated magic, do you actually believe he knew any curses at age eleven?
Wow, Snape had bad friends and defended their actions? Who does this remind me of?
(Remus, Sirius, Lily, everyone else).
I'm not trying to defend Snape's bad actions. I'm trying to get people to stop mischaracterizing The Molesters while defending situations in which Snape didn't have a choice in what he could do.
Great,
I would like to say before everything, I'm really enjoying the discussion! :)
First of all, I think we need to start with addressing the terminology being used and the exact breakdown of "Snape's Worst Memory" What James and Sirius did to Snape—ambushing him, using Scourgify to make him choke on soap, hanging him upside down, and threatening to strip his pants off— exposing his underwear to the student was a horrific display of bullying and public humiliation. It is indefensible and gives u all the right to hate James for it. However, labeling a teenager's threat of public stripping as "sexual assault" isn't the appropriate vocab. Sexual assault in its legal definition implies a motive of sexual gratification or violation, whereas James's motive was purely arrogant intimidation and public humiliation.
Furthermore, it’s worth noting that the spell used to hang him upside down, Levicorpus, was actually invented by Snape himself to use it against his enemies— the marauders. As Lupin stated in The Half-Blood Prince, it was a spell that became a popular trend where everyone was using it on each other.
Also, the spells James used weren't "illegal"—they were common school hexes. (Snape himself saw Draco using some of them against other students, and didn't say anything about it.)
More importantly,
Death Eaters Were Not Just a 'Cult' !
You are labeling teenage bullying with extreme terms while simultaneously watering down Snape's willing participation in a literal terrorist organization as just 'joining a cult.'
They were a genocidal terrorist organization. Joining them meant actively participating in or supporting the torture and murder of innocent people solely based on their blood status.
Snape didn't leave because he suddenly realized their ideology was wrong. he did that just because Lily was personally targeted. In the DH, we saw him deliver the prophecy to Voldemort fully knowing it would result in the murder of a baby and its family.
Take a sec to think about it, what could be worst than being the reason of murdering an infant! that was his choice.
What James did is incomparable to this.
If Voldemort said that the prophecy is pointing to Neville Longbottom, Snape would have remained a Death Eater and let the family and the infant die without a second thought.
That's bring us to the next point, the argument that Snape was simply brainwashed by Slytherins from age eleven ignores his own agency and his pre-Hogwarts behavior. In the chapter "The Prince's Tale" before they even step foot in Hogwarts, Lily asks Snape if it makes a difference that she is Muggle-born, and Snape hesitates before answering.
Talking about the environment and 11 years old Snape didn't have a choice, how do we explain Sirius Black or Andromeda Tonks? They were raised in the most extreme, abusive, pure-blood supremacist families imaginable from birth, yet they rejected those ideologies entirely. Equating the Marauders' bullying to the actions of Snape's friends is a false equivalence. James was a bully, but Mulciber and Avery were literally practicing terrorism and dark magic.
You also questioned how Snape could possibly know dark curses at age eleven if he grew up in a Muggle neighborhood with an abusive, magic-hating Muggle father. The answer is directly in the text, his mother, Eileen Prince, was a pure-blood witch. Snape deeply resented his Muggle father and heavily identified with his mother's magical heritage. It is entirely logical, and supported by canon, that he consumed whatever magical books or knowledge his mother possessed before going to school.
Even if we assumed that Sirius is just an "unreliable source." We don't even need his quote to prove this, Severus was a prodigy. He was successfully inventing and casting non-verbal spells—highly advanced magic typically taught in the sixth year—when he was only 14 or 15. He was also inventing incredibly dark curses. This canonically proves he had an exceptionally advanced grasp of the Dark Arts and spellcraft from a very young age, completely validating the claim about his early knowledge.
You also question how James's character development can be proven by his appointment as Head Boy, pointing out that Dumbledore made Draco Malfoy and Remus Lupin prefects despite their flaws. However, there is a massive difference between a fifth-year Prefect badge and the seventh-year Head Boy position. Prefect badges are often given strategically, Remus was given one in a failed attempt to control his friends, and Draco was likely recommended by his Head of House, Snape. Head Boy, on the other hand, is the highest student authority representing the entire school. Dumbledore, who knows everything happening in his castle, would never give that ultimate leadership role to a seventh-year who was still actively and publicly tormenting people for fun.
Regarding the Boggart, I see your point but if we have to ignore the JKR's world-building to defend a character, we are no longer discussing Harry Potter. Lupin explicitly states in PoA that a Boggart takes the shape of "whatever frightens us most." most profound fear. Lupin's greatest fear is the full moon because it represents his transformation into a monster that could kill his friends. Hermione's greatest fear is academic failure, which McGonagall represented in that moment, telling her, "You've failed everything!". Neville’s greatest fear wasn't Bellatrix Lestrange—the woman who tortured his parents to insanity—it was his teacher, Severus Snape.
Neville didn't fear Snape as an abstract symbol of 'stern authority'. he feared him because Snape was a direct source of psychological terror in his life. We cannot just erases the very real, targeted abuse Neville suffered at his hands. (He wasn't even able to read instructions out of fear! Yet he passed the owls potion exam when he wasn't there.)
Snape did not take a "calculated risk" with Trevor the toad, he maliciously told Neville he would feed the botched potion to his pet at the end of class, knowing Neville lacked the skill to fix it. He then threatened Hermione not to help him. When the potion worked and the toad survived, Snape was not relieved, he was angry and deducted points from Gryffindor because Hermione had helped. He fully intended to poison a student's pet. However, a grown man in his 30s mocking a 14-year-old girl's physical appearance to the point of tears isn't 'bad at jokes' or 'insensitive.' It's deliberate emotional cruelty from a teacher in a position of power.
When you said Also that Lily didn't care that James's friends almost killed Snape is factually incorrect because she didn't know the truth. Dumbledore swore all parties involved to strict secrecy regarding Remus's condition and the prank. Lily only knew that James saved Snape's life and Severus wasn't able to tell her all what happened because of this.
Finally, claiming that Snape 'didn't have a choice' completely erases his agency and the entire point of his redemption arc.
No one could deny Snape's bravery, nor could excuse the Marauders' horrific bullying. But loving a grey character means accepting the weight of their choices. Snape wasn't a passive victim of circumstance, he actively chose the Dark Arts and joining death eaters, he chose to deliver the prophecy, and later, he heroically chose to sacrifice his life to defeat Voldemort. Stripping him of his free will just to paint him as a helpless victim doesn't defend him—it ruins the very complexity that makes him such a brilliantly written character.
Many legal systems, Title IX guidelines in schools, and human rights tribunals define unwanted exposure of intimate body parts or forcibly pulling down a person's clothing as a sexually-oriented violation or sexual harassment.
In some criminal codes, pulling down someone's clothing is treated as a form of simple or physical assault/battery because it involves unwanted physical contact and violation of personal space.
Depending on local laws and whether a person's genitals or underwear are forcibly exposed in public, it may also fall under public indecency or disorderly conduct.
Even if a person claims it was "just a prank" or a joke, the non-consensual exposure of a person's body causes severe humiliation and violates their bodily autonomy and human rights.
Harry Potter in detention sorts through old school records kept by Argus Filch. Snape pulls out a card, reading the citation aloud:
"James Potter and Sirius Black. Apprehended using an illegal hex upon Bertram Aubrey. Aubrey's head twice normal size. Double detention."
There, illegal hex.
How could Snape have known? Tell me, how was Snape supposed to even begin to imagine how Voldemort's mind works. He couldn't have known he would interpret the prophecy as the birth of a child, for it says: "the one who blah blah blah approaches. Born as the seventh month dies[...]" which, to me, sounds more like some dude was born in the seventh month and is now arriving to Britain. That's how I would have interpreted it.
We don't know what Snape thought of it, but we know he doesn't believe in divination.
Kid Snape must have been told by his mum that there's a certain level of prejudice against muggleborns at Hogwarts. When Lily questioned if it makes a difference, he hesitated not because he was a raging blood supremacist at the ripe old age of 9, but because he didn't wish to make his only friend uncomfortable or scared when they were both so happy and excited thinking about their future in a magical world.
Not everyone reacts to indoctrination equally, and also: your examples were RICH guys! They had the money to leave their homes and go somewhere else! They had friends or a husband! They had support! They. Could. Leave! Snape had shabby hand-me-downs, one friend, a group of bullies, and an even bigger group of terrorists he had to live with.
Do you really believe Snape's, abusive, magic-hating father just let Snape's mother keep magical books around their son?
Being a prodigy at something in school doesn't mean you had prior knowledge about it.
Wouldn't he? Sirius didn't get in trouble after trying to kill his classmate. But Snape did get in trouble after almost being killed by him.
So Remus's fear is something that represents something else? Hermione's fear represents something else? But if Neville isn't afraid of some woman he's never met that's been in jail for as long as he's lived, surely this means his fear of Snape, that everyone laughs at, isn't representative of his fear of stern authority at all.
Neville Longbottom did not pass his Potions O.W.L. exam.
Fine, fine, I'll give you the toad and the teeth ones. That was cruel.
Yes, Lily knows James saved Snape's life. Meaning his life was being threatened. That's how saving lives works. Your life has to be endangered for it to be saved.
Lily does not show concern for her best friend's life being in danger.
It's hard to blame a victim of circumstances for the choices they weren't allowed to make.
There were so many uncontrollable external pressures and events that triggered everything that went down in Snape's life, it's just hard to point out a situation that can't be blamed on someone or something else setting him up for failure.
Bachelor of Education Student/Prac teacher here: Severus Snape may have been a terrible teacher, but he was actually not much worse than any of the other teachers. Even your favourite. Yes including that one. No, that ones not a major enough character for us to be able to tell because we don't get any scenes of their classroom. Basically every teacher we meet in the books is in some way either not teaching properly, intentionally grading their students poorly or committing an actual crime. Yes, EVEN THAT ONE. So, to say Snape is the worst teacher tells me all I need to know about your opinions on teaching, because objectively, he's on the exact same level of horrendous teacher as most other characters, with a few notable better ones and worse ones (e.i. McGonagall and Lupin are actually just as bad, Harry just likes them more, so unless you pay attention or know anything about teaching, it's hard to pick up on. Lupin's arguably worse since he actively endangers his students lives, like "welcome to my self defense class, today we'll learn how to defend yourself from a knife wielding mugger, and to do this, I've brought a real knife wielding mugger to attempt assaulting you guys" is functionally what's going on when he brings active threats into the classroom in the FIRST LESSON).
I'll also say this, James and Sirius do sexually assault Severus Snape, after all what would you define a physical ambush and public stripping of a child as, if not sexual assault? Regardless of that, James is also actually sexually (or perhaps just romantically since he doesn't use sexual language) harassing Lily Evans. He asks her out, and she's clearly exasperated enough by it to say "I'd rather date the giant squid", meaning he's been doing this for a long time, and his response is to then hurt Severus. He's repeatedly trying to get Lily's attention, and specifically trying to get a date, and refusing to accept her "no" as a final answer.
Now obviously, there is an Authorial Context at play here. James is perhaps unintentionally based on JKTERF's abusive ex husband, much like how Ron is intentionally based on the glorified version of her husband she wished existed. We know this, this has been stated by her and noted by others for years by this point. And there's other scenes that indicate things JKTERF clearly thinks aren't that big a deal, for example: Merope Gaunt drugging, kidnapping and raping Tom Riddle Snr., Viktor Krum aging but his taste in women not (17yo attracted to a 15yo Hermione? Not a big deal. 20yo attracted to a 16yo Ginny? Suspicious), Cormac McLaggen sexually harassing Hermione after she asked him out, Barty Jr. transfiguring Draco against his will, Romilda Vane attempting to roofie Harry and accidentally roofieing Ron instead, Fred and George selling love potions (roofies that Romilda eventually uses), Bellatrix and Voldemort's age gap, Remus and Tonks's age gap, Bill and Fleur's age gap (not all bad in isolation, it's the fact that it's a pattern), and all of these things happen in the books. JKTERF, the "Lolita is a beautiful love story" woman that she is, clearly has a skewed perception of what is acceptable behaviour, and she probably didn't write SWM with the intention of it being a sexual assault, and the movie makes an effort to remove some of the things James and Sirius do to Severus, although it's not much better when it's only trousers (keep in mind it's using British slang, pants means James and Sirius removed Severus's underwear and exposed his genitalia).
Nevertheless, interpreting it as a sexual assault isn't bad because that is literally what happens. Exposing a child's genitalia publicly without permission is sexual assault, and there is no getting around that. However, choosing to acknowledge the authorial biases and intentions and water down the scene is also not bad, because James and Sirius were not meant to be child sex offenders (yes, even if you're a child when you commit the crime, you are considered a CSO). They were written to be morally flawed and hypocritical, not to be actual abusers. Either interpretation is completely valid, however it really doesn't matter because James and Sirius are still supposed to be hypocrites. That's the whole point.
Harry expresses that some of his father's actions remind of Dudley, that's the moment you're supposed to realise "oh, Harry's dad isn't a purely good guy, he's flawed and has a violent past and Harry's struggling to reconcile how a man capable of such behaviour was also fundamentally a loyal friend and heroic activist". THAT'S THE WHOLE POINT. YOU'RE NOT SUPPOSED TO SIDE WITH JAMES. YOU'RE NOT SUPPOSED TO SIDE WITH SEVERUS EITHER. THEY'RE BOTH FUNDAMENTALLY GOOD INTENTIONED BUT FLAWED MEN WHO DO AWFUL THINGS. THEY'RE BOTH HYPOCRITES THAT HATED EACH OTHER FOR THE FLAWS THEY SHARED.
Anyway, neither pro snape nor pro marauders nor anti either of them, but a secret third thing (thinks the argument is dumb and they both suck but not enough for me to actually care about the hypocritical escapades of two fictional men when there are infinitely more interesting characters with bigger roles in the story, Neville and Luna supremacy).
