Description
The portrait shows Princess Victoria, later Queen Victoria (1819–1901), aged four, wearing the black finery in mourning for her father, Edward, Duke of Kent (1767–1820). Pictured in a minimal landscape, there is a sense of isolation that reflects the tales of a solitary childhood spent at Kensington Palace, London.
The empty horizon brings an aura of melancholy, a state that was commonly associated with contemporary views of a fatherless child. Even the single gloved hand could be interpreted by early nineteenth-century viewers as melancholic. Despite the subdued mood, there is a wilfulness and confidence in Victoria’s stance, her gaze bright and enquiring. A sense of spring hopefulness is suggested in the flashes of sunlight on the ground, with grey, scumbled clouds pushed out by emerging blue skies.

PREMIÈRE TOILETTE — Costume en foulard heliotrope à petit semé blanc; tunique formant une longue écaille drapée en pointe dans le bas, très relevée sur le coté et découvrant la jupe en tissu brodé écru sur transparent de foulard uni; pouf à coques étagées avec cascade de flots de ruban de côté. Corselet perlé avec pendeloques; chemisette bouffante drapée à la paysanne: noud sur l'epaule, et manche demi-longue, avec sabot de dentelle écrue. — Capote de paille à jour; bord bouiilonné en velours héliotrope, aigrette de roses the et bruyère.
DEUXIÈME TOILETTE. — Jupe plissée en toile beige clair rayée de rubis, retenue devant par de gros nœuds de rubans beige, poses sur un ruban à ploots rubis: tunique relevée en pouf droit et dégageant le tablier. Corsage ouvert sur un gilet de toile unie beige, avec col droit en toile unie fermé de coté: revers en velours rubis; dos à basque-postillon découpée, posant sur une patte de velours rubis; manche a parement de velours. — Chapeau de grosse paille bise, avec revers en velours rubis; devant. pouf élevé de fleurs de pécher, mélé de dentelle coquillée.
COSTUME D'ENFANT. — Corsage a longue basque, flottante, en étamine de laine unie tabac, ouvert sur une chemisette capotée en étamine de méme ton à rayures bretonnes, plissee en long devant; les raies sont disposées en travers derrière; pouf drapé en étamine rayée; tablier uni et col rayé; le dos du corsage est court et forme une petite pointe; manche découpée rappelant le mouvement de la basque, et posant sur un parement-manchette en etamine rayee. — Chapeau de paille à passe tuyautée, doublée de gaze de soie vieux rose; tuuffe de fleurs des champs.
