A lot of my personal political opinions boil down to “hey this thing clearly isn’t going anywhere so maybe if we’re stuck with it then we should make it better and see what’s good about it” and a lot of people on tumblr generally seem to interpret that sentiment as me saying “I think that the current system is perfect and am ignoring everything bad about it and also I’m going to kill your mother”
Personally I’m a pragmatist when it comes to politics. I wanna know what I can get done now and in the realistically near future. Which really annoys a lot of idealists, I’m learning.
If I have to work within the system to make things better I’m gonna do that. If working outside of the system works better then I’ll do that. Realistically you probably need a combination of both.
There’s a lot of “this is how it’s always been” attitudes out there I’ve noticed. And the two reactions that frequently annoy me are “so we can’t change it” and “so we have to tear down all of it”
First of all, no matter what you’re talking about it probably hasn’t always been like this. Things change constantly. Second of all, there’s a middle ground in life between tearing down the system to the foundation and allowing it to continue unchanged. In fact, that middle ground is where a lot of utilitarian, unglamorous progress happens while those two groups on the extremes are sitting around twiddling their thumbs.
The day to day actions of making the world a better place are boring and they’re often a repetitive slog. Voting, donating, protesting, volunteering, picking up trash, lying down in a government building, boycotting, planting gardens, working, parenting, walking from office to office and asking for things directly. Chipping away at a concrete wall with a spoon.
Here’s the thing though. There’s a lot of people with spoons. So unless you’re planning out the revolution all by yourself then get swinging with that spoon of yours.
I literally love all of you, but as a Tumblr veteran, Tumblr's main feature is the reblog feature. It is the beating heart of the dashboard and the foundation for a chronological timeline. The For You page here should not be your default setting.
You guys have got to start reblogging stuff you enjoy, especially, specifically gifs and fan art but also fics and fan theories or even hot takes if you're not afraid of a lil discourse. Over the last year or several I've been trying to start my own religion but I think I've been going about it wrong. I thought that I would have to try to believe in something myself before sharing it. But I bet that's not how other religion starters got their start. I bet they all start out trying to convince other people of something and when a few others start believing it then the founder gets caught up in their own nonsense. That would probably work for me. Anyways, I think my ambitions are modest. I want to start a cult tostart a cult to Thetis as a schism from Discordianism---a religion who holds schisms to be the highest form of orthodoxy. Thetis is important in the story of Discordianism because it was Thetis' wedding Eris crashed with her Apple of Discord. In most classical accounts Eris was motivated by resentment at not being invited. In the Principia Discordia, Malaclypse the Younger suggests that she acted more out of capricious desire for shits and giggles. After wrecking the wedding she takes herself out for a hotdog 🌭. But in my telling, Eris acted only out of love for her girlfriend Thetis, who as the classical scholars know was being forced into a marriage with a mortal against her wishes. Thetis is a low to mid tier sea nymph and my idea is to worship her through communion with the sea specifically and water generally. She is aligned with chaos but has a different take on it from Eris who herself is more of an earnest involuntary agent of disorder rather than vengeful and spiteful fury. Though, no doubt, she is always a fury (furry?). Thetis is, more of a bipolar entity, seething silently like the ocean on endless deathly calm days and then on occasion letting loose all rage and joy in extravagant exuberant rampaging tempests. Much like her daughter Pyrha/Achilles (as depicted in Wrath Goddess Sing) she can brood endlessly on injustice before destroying everything in a flood of bloodthirsty vengeance. If this totally well adjusted deity appeals to you, you might be a potential "Child of Thetis" or "Thetissian" or "Thetian", hmmm... We can keep workshopping the name of the believers.
