"The fact is that human life is not possible without profiting by the labour of others, and that there are only two ways in which this can be done: either through a fraternal, equalitarian and libertarian association, in which solidarity, consciously and freely expressed unites all mankind; or the struggle of each against the other in which the victors overrule, oppress and exploit the rest ... We want to bring about a society in which men will consider each other as brothers and by mutual support will achieve the greatest well-being and freedom as well as physical and intellectual development for all ..."â Mutual Aid, 1909 Errico Malatesta
the composer John Cage is most generally well known for his piano piece 4'33", in which the pianist sits before a piano in silence for that period of time
but he also wrote a whole load of audible music, so we wanted to share two of our favourites
this is In A Landscape, for piano (we first heard William Orbit's take on it, which made us find the original) - and we also love an arrangement for marimba, played by Michael Compitello
and this is Inlets, a work for several people playing conch shells of wildly different sizes filled with water - which when tilted to and fro make everything from fast plipping noises to long, slow glouping noises, we find it both soothing and compelling

whilst the church building appears rather forbidding from the outside due to the continuous concrete wall, once you pass through the gate it appears all the more light and delicate. the architectural influences make you feel as though you have been transported to more southerly climes rather than the bergisches land; i, too, was quickly reminded of moorish and ottoman architecture such as i had encountered in spain, hungary or israel. but i could also see parallels with the hospital chapel at cologne university hospital, which was completed in 1965 â not only in terms of the windows and interior design, but also in the fondness for integrated courtyards of tranquillity.
"In order to write Themes and Variations I made a cursory examination of my earlier books, jotting down subjects or ideas which still seemed lively to me. When I counted them up they came to one hundred and ten. Anarchy is one of them. The themes of Themes and Variations are the named of fifteen of the men who have been most important to me in my life and work.
Buckminster Fuller is one of them. From the beginning of my knowing him I had as he did confidence in his plan to make life on earth a success for everyone. His plan is to make an equation between human needs and world resources. I had the good luck in Hawaii to see proof of the viability of Fuller's plan.
The island of Oahu is divided by a mountain range. Honolulu is on the southern side. I was staying with friends on the northern side. The mountain range is of course tunnelled. But at its ridge I noticed each day crenelations as on a medieval castle. What are those, I asked. I was told that formerly, actually not so long ago, the tribes on one side of the mountain were at war with those on the other side. The crenelations were used for self-protection when shooting poisoned arrows at enemies. Now the tunnel exists and both sides of the island share the same utilities. The idea of fighting one another is out of the question.
This change was not brought about by a political agreement. Buckminster Fuller believed, and I follow him, that politicians are of no good use. They could be sent as he used to say to outer space and left there without matters getting worse for humanity here on earth. We don't need government. We need utilities: air, water, energy, travel and communication means, food and shelter. We have no need for imaginary mountain ranges between separate nations. We can make tunnels through the real ones. Nor do we have any need for the continuing division of people into those who have what they need and those who don't.
Both Fuller and Marshall McLuhan knew, furthermore, that work is now obsolete. We have invented machines to do it for us. Now that we have no need to do anything what shall we do? Looking at Fuller's Geodesic World Map we see that the earth is a single island. Oahu. We must give all the people all they need to live in any way they wish.
Our present laws protect the rich from the poor. If there are to be
laws we need ones that begin with the acceptance of poverty as a way of life. We must make the earth safe for poverty without dependence on government."

at some point you're going to have to realise that going "only the in group can talk about the fucked up shit we're doing" is very transparently "group trying to hide evidence of abuse from public scrutiny" of you. it's very FLDS of you. very Mormon. very Scientologist. it's also the sort of thing that gets you people that very much hate you and people like you as the only ones who get public attention for speaking out against you, because when you silence people approaching things with compassion, the only people you're left with are the ones that want to watch you burn.
every time you see someone saying not to talk about an issue your group is facing because "what if people that hate us see it" it is a sign that you should be louder. being committed solely to optics at the cost of victims of abuse is something that happens in quite literally every group and movement because victims (whom are majority women and therefore seen as disposable) are not seen as important and addressing abusers' wrongdoings is seen as a great risk to The Cause. and you wouldn't want The Cause to fail and the people who hate you to win, would you? (for a recently exposed and relevant example of this, see Cesar Chavez)
personally my commitment to protecting those like me involves not hiding behind "the wrong person is doing the looking!!!" as a defense against things, which means that when bad actors try to accuse me and communities I am in of ignoring issues and silencing victims, I have a history and evidence and solid counterpoints.. but that's just me. thankfully my lack of the terrible guilt from sin means that I can post whatever I want without worry đđ

i really appreciate adam mckay's willingness to discuss the elephant in the room this summer and summers into the future...
Thinking we have time left to address climate change, or that âNet Zero by 2050â will save us, is driving us toward full social collapse in
However, there is one type of rare, gargantuan, towering lie that makes all the other mass lies throughout human history seem like frightened, scurrying, little adorable fibs.
It is a lie told worldwide by hundreds of thousands of institutions, elected officials, many universities, legacy news, some large non-profits and eventuallyâas the deception entered mainstream cultureâeven by ourselves, to ourselves, every single moment of every day. It is a constantly growing gourd that even as a baby back in the 1970s was the size of three aircraft carriers. These days it is so massive it is almost easier to refer to what isnât part of it (Disneyland, a BLT, that green croc by the side of the highway) than what is.
This massive lie can best be summed up as âwhen it comes to climate change... we have more time.â
...
"No, the monstrous, misshapen garden colossus lie weâre referring to is subscribed to by most of the U.S., has stopped and slowed climate action far more than outright denial, and keeps growing and growing. Every day this deception whispers seductively in the ears of mankind: âglobal warming is real but not urgent⊠Keep doing what youâre doing.â
Less embarrassing than âclimate change is a Chinese hoax,â but every bit as unscientific and ridiculous, it is the preferred lie of the ruling class, mainstream news media, and corporations.
Sir David Kingâformer science advisor to the United Kingdom, professor at Oxford and then Cambridge, winner of too many awards to list and as establishment as they comeâwas quoted as saying that what we do over the next three to four years will determine the fate of humankind.
He said this... in 2021.
Like all grand lies, âwe have more timeâ takes many different forms, often focus-grouped. There are the lofty-sounding promises to reach âNet-zero emissions by 2050,â as if 24 years from now was soon enough. There are the queries of âWhatâs your carbon footprint?,â as if individual people with plastic bags or straws were the problem and not gigantic multinational corporations. Thereâs the accusation that anyone who expresses urgency is a âdoomer.â There are those who treat climate as an abstraction to win political campaigns, first arguing that the Biden administrationâs Inflation Reduction Act was a victory despite doing nowhere near enough to address the scale of climate collapse, and more recently that Democrats should just stop talking about climate and focus on more âwinnableâ issues. Most damaging and common of all, there are those who simply donât mention it.
All of these distortions have robbed us of the most critical element people need to understand a threat and adjust their actions accordingly: context.
And make no mistake, when it comes to how much time we have, the data and the geological record are crystal clear.
For some badly-needed context, the last three years, likely for the first time in over 100,000 years, have averaged above the Paris Accordsâ âdo not crossâ 1.5 degrees celsius planetary warming. Only ten years ago, that was considered catastrophic, but now mainstream news tells us itâs just a number.
And with a bump coming next year from a growing, historic El Niño up to 1.7 degrees celsius average warming, likely to cause agricultural failure and food shortages, we are staring right at the vaunted 2C number.
Why is 2C so vaunted?
Letâs do the context thing again: 2C will mean we have completely left the stable climate period known as the Holocene. This is the 11,000-year-old era that has given us large-scale crop and livestock agriculture, which gave us cities, written language, modern science and medicine, and warm beds and showers."
