The Alice Fredlund Seranaders aka The Halekulani Girls were Hawaii’s most popular trio of the late 1950s.
Leader Alice Fredlund played guitar and sang in a rich contralto voice. Linda Dela Cruz brought a lively soprano and sparkling ukulele style, while Sybil Andrews anchored the group on stand-up bass, singing with warmth and spirited humor.
Denny McLain was one of the premier pitchers for the Detroit Tigers during the 1960s. Alongside his baseball career, he pursued music, releasing several organ albums on the Capitol Records label.
In later years, McLain became entangled in legal troubles involving gambling and organized crime figures. Today, however, he remains a familiar voice in Detroit sports media, making regular appearances on local sports radio and the occasional musical performance.
Here’s a classic 1940s-style Mai Tai recipe—the version most cocktail historians associate with Victor J. Bergeron (“Trader Vic”).
