teamwork makes the dream work. and dreamwork. makes shrek
fantastic. i love it. i posted this after my wife said it yesterday and as i was doing it i was like "this can't be an original thought. as soon as i hit post someone's going to say 'you stole this from a tweet from 2014' and i'll say 'no, i stole it from my beautiful wife.'"
So I do 3D modeling and printing as a hobby, and a few weeks ago I designed wheel guards meant to prevent office chairs from running over cables and clothes... or your pet's tail.
I got the idea from cowcatchers old locomotives used to have.
Anyways, yesterday I uploaded the model to Thingiverse, and just hours after uploading it, the Community Relationship Manager of the whole website left a comment suggesting I enter the model into a competition that's currently being held on the site.
So I did... and now it's in third place not even a day later. First place is $500, but the competition still has a month to go.
Then the Community Manager contacted me again, telling me they want to feature my model in an upcoming design promotion.
Just, what is happening? I mostly made this thing for myself in, like, an hour, and now it's suddenly super popular? This is all a little bit overwhelming 😵💫
Other models I worked on for weeks didn't get nearly as popular. I swear, it's impossible to predict what people will like.
Anyways, if you want to print the wheel guards yourself, you can get the model here or here.
I also made a quiet version you can stick furniture felt pads on.
People love simple, extremely practical things. I hope you win!
Okay, couple of things since I've gotten responses to my video...
I know air conditioners aren't inexpensive. But they are a good investment. Spending $400 now can make the next ten years of your life remarkably better. If you can't afford that, that sucks. But if you can afford it, do it.
It's weird to say "people are dying" in response to a video where I explicitly say "people are dying." I literally bring up that other places have this heat without the deaths because they have A/C, and have repeatedly said in the past that this is a needed investment in places like the UK now because of how many people are dying because of the heat. That is literally part of my whole point.
Buildings that trap heat are also good at holding in A/C when you add it. We have brick houses in Wisconsin too. Buildings that trap heat are also good at holding in A/C. Buildings that trap heat are also good at holding in A/C.
Buildings that trap heat are also good at holding in A/C.

It doesn't even get that cold in the UK.
Also AC is harm reduction. AC keeps people who have difficulty regulating their body temperature from dying.
People like those with spinal cord injuries, people on medications like SSRIs or stimulants, disabled people, elderly people, and babies/small children.
I know AC isn't good for the environment, but until our governments decide to get off their asses and actually do something, it's the best option. Remember: doing something a bit problematic to help keep vulnerable people alive and healthy is the morally correct thing to do.
And a lot of that environmental harm can be mitigated in the long run by investing into green energy and updating houses for passive cooling.
But, like, if you don't want people to die immediately, AC is the only real option.

Have you guys noticed how much the internet/technology just does not listen to you anymore? I click “don’t show this artist” on Spotify and I get recommended a music video by them on the front page. I click “skip this update” on a pop up every time I open a file organization app and it’s right back there every time. O click unsubscribe on a newsletter and it keeps showing up in my inbox!! I click “delete my account” and the next time I open the website they suggest I “reactivate”.
Power is a funny thing.
ohhh my god I just fact-checked, Nolan actually DID cut the "Nobody" scene from his Odyssey movie. Mfer that is like cutting the Father reveal from Star Wars. Let me speak in a language you understand this is like not dressing Batman up in his suit. "It was not possible to work it in" the TikTok musical with a budget of $4 and a scratched Hamilton CD managed to work it in in SONG form, step up your FUCKING GAME
I got a free ticket to this movie and i have Thoughts (below the cut in case anyone??? Is worried about spoilers??)

Do it because you deserve it! Do it for YOU! Water your dreams with love! Don’t put no hate and resentment, and try to — “oh Imma fucking show them, Imma show” — FUCK THEM! Fuck them, do it for you! So if y’all have been here for more than a minute or two, you know that I love a good can of worms. I see a can of worms, I pop the top off that baby and check her out.
In a recent trip to a used bookstore, I found this, which looks like a wormy can indeed:
But I figure, if someone wrote this book they’re either going to be extremely wrong or have some really interesting things to say.
Much to my amusement and amazement, the introduction of the book is talking a lot about queer theory, abuse, harm (all things that are my areas of expertise), and Palestine. Couldn’t have timed this one better, I guess. Worth noting that it’s from 2016, so a lot has changed as far as the global perception of that conflict (understatement).
It is worth noting here that the author does not deny the reality of abuse or the harm of abuse, but clarifies that she's talking about a different thing. A different thing that is when stuff that is not abuse is treated like abuse and that rhetoric and mindset is used to justify subsequent actions.
This caught me cold:
HUH.
For screen-reading compatibility and ease, the text is as follows:
In this book, I bring fifty-seven years of living and thirty-five years of writing to a critical conclusion: that from the most potent potential for intimacy between strangers, to intimate domestic moments between lovers, to the claims of the state on its citizens, to the geopolitical phenomena of mass murder, we witness a continuum. Namely, false accusations of harm are used to avoid acknowledgment of complicity in creating conflict and instead escalate normative conflict to the level of crisis. This choice to punish rather than resolve is a product of distorted thinking, and relies on reinforcement of negative group relationships, when instead these ideologies should be actively challenged. Through this overstatement of harm, false accusations are used to justify cruelty, while shunning keeps information from entering into the process. Resistance to shunning, exclusion, and unilateral control, while necessary, are mischaracterized as harm and used to re-justify more escalation towards bullying, state intervention, and violence. Emphasizing communication and repair, instead of shunning and separation, is the key to transforming those paradigms.
Fuckign. Yes. (Emphasis added is mine.) Her particular example here is the resistance to the silence imposed from above regarding the AIDS epidemic, and how those protests were treated as active harm by the government and punished as such.
This is exactly the shit I've been thinking about for the last few days to an uncanny degree.
She goes on to talk about how Part One of the book is about distinguishing between conflict and abuse, starting within households and relationships and expanding to the realm of the state, then going on to "trying to understand how the police became the arbiters of our relationships" (YES!!!!! HOW???), and exploring these concepts in historical context.
Then on to summarize what she's doing in part 2, and this hit me like a water balloon on a hot day:
First paragraph:
Once this relationship between overstating harm and the Abuse by the state is established, I start to unravel some of the reasons why people are compelled to escalate. The centerpiece of this dynamic is the role of "bad" groups in encouraging bullying and shunning instead of peacemaking. Escalation is the key consequence of refusing to problem-solve or negotiate, and it demands our attention as a central obstacle to peace and justice.
But then I really want to linger on this last paragraph here. The rest is putting into words insights that I think I've already had. This last one is bringing up something that I have literally never thought of before.
In Chapter Five, I examine how Traumatized behavior and Supremacy ideology resemble each other, how both produce distorted thinking that seeks unreasonable levels of control over other people and does not tolerate self-criticism or difference. I propose a release of the stigma around recognizing mental illness, distorted thinking, and anxiety, and suggest that they be publicly and commonly recognized as contributing sources of this intolerance and control. And I try to look at cultural denial of these manifestations of distorted thinking as a strategy for the enforcement of dominance.
This. This feels like it might be cooking with fire. This is an extremely interesting thought and I think it bears a lot of exploration. It feels true, which means I'm going to be extremely critical of it going forward as I read and see how well it passes stress tests.
I've literally only read the introduction so I can't recommend this book or anything, but I can tell y'all I am Paying Attention. Listening, Learning, Etc.
