It was more of a slip of a tongue than anything.Ā
Itās late in the night. The corridors have gone quiet. Everyone has finally surrendered to their sleep. Lanterns have either been snuffed or are running down to the end of the candle wicks. Branches of the trees drag across the glass, and somewhere beyond the courtyard, a horse whinnies, restless in the same way everyone seems restless these days, even where thereās nothing immediate to fear.
But you know as well as anyone, that there is always something to fear.
Thatās the thing about the Scouts. You donāt carry fear with you. It follows you. It lives in your bones, beneath your fingernails, in your tight shoulders after a mission briefing, in silence that follows when someone says a name and no one answers because that person is already gone.
Maybe thatās why youāre so attracted to Levi. Because he never seems afraid. Not openly, anyway.
He sits at his desk with his sleeves rolled to his forearms, a stack of reports arranged neatly in front of him. His teacup is placed at the exact corner of the desk, where even one small shake of the desk could knock it over. His cravat is loosened slightly, but itās not enough to make him look relaxed, because you believe Levi would rather be dragged through the streets tied by the hands than look relaxed where anyone can see him. But itās enough that the sight catches you off guard every time you glance up from your own work.
Youāre supposed to be copying casualty numbers into a ledger. Youāre, instead, watching the flex of his fingers as he writes. Itās almost humiliating how attracted you are to them. Itās even worse because you realize that itās humiliating, and yet you keep on doing it. You really should stop staring.
āYouāre staring,ā Levi says without looking up.
Your quill nearly slips from your fingers. Caught. āIām not.ā
āYou are.ā
āIām thinking.ā
āThat must be new for you.ā
Maybe you should be offended. Maybe you already are. Perhaps a part of you lifts its head, bares its teeth, and considers heās awful and itās about time you stop treating him like heās royalty when all heās done is insult your intelligence and correct your handwriting twice. But you simply smile over your ledger, because thereās obviously something wrong with you.
āI was thinking,ā you say, dipping your quill again, āthat you look nice like this.ā
Leviās hand stops. Itās tiny. So small. A momentary pause in gesture, a flicker of silence between one word and the next, and yet you notice it, as you always do. You always see the things you wish you didnāt, because your affection for him has made you perceptive to the point of self-injury.Ā
Then he resumes writing. āGet your eyes checked.ā
You laugh tiredly. āI mean it,ā you say, because apparently your mouth has decided to ignore every remaining sensible instinct you possess. āYou always look nice, but especially when youāre not threatening to make someone scrub the latrines with a toothbrush.ā
āI can still threaten you, if that helps.ā
āIt might,ā you say, and when he finally lifts his gaze to you, one brow faintly lifted, you press your lips together to keep yourself from smiling too much. āI think I might be falling in love with you, Captain.ā
You definitely did not plan on saying that out loud.Ā
The words are like a lit match dropped onto paper. You expect something to happen, though youāre not sure exactly what; maybe for Levi to look startled, maybe for your own heartbeat to become so loud that he hears it and tells you to quiet down, but thereās only the sound of his quill stopping and his eyes fixing on you with a disbelief thatās usually reserved for soldiers who have done something phenomenally stupid with live blades. Youāve seen Connie almost cut open his own hand at least a dozen times now.
āNo, youāre not,ā he says. Itās so blunt that, for a second, you almost laugh again.
āI think I know what Iām feeling.ā
āYou clearly donāt.ā
āThatās a little presumptuous.ā
āYouāre exhausted. Youāve been copying death tolls for two hours, and your standards are slipping.ā
You should probably retreat now, but the bruise of it is too new to hurt yet, and maybe youāre still brave because you havenāt learned your lesson on how this man can cut you without drawing steel.
āMy standards are excellent,ā you say. āThatās why I picked you.ā
Levi stares at you. You stare back, fully aware of the heat gathering beneath your skin. You notice how he hasnāt looked back down yet.His face shiftsānot much, because Leviās expressions never move far enough to be generous, but enough that something flickers behind his eyes. You canāt tell what it is.Ā
Then he presses his lips together and scoffs. āFinish the ledger. And donāt say stupid things just because itās late.ā
The match goes out. You look down. āRight,ā you say, your smile feeling much more fragile than it was one minute ago. āYes, sir.ā
After that, you decide that confession didnāt count. It was late. You were tired. He was rude, but Levi is always rude, and somehow that makes the rejection easier to deal with.
Except it does count.
Because the next time you say it, youāre not tired enough to pretend you donāt mean it.
The next time you flirt with him is after training, when the sun is high and cruel and every inch of your uniform is clinging to your skin. The sound of the training grounds is always loud. Someone groans dramatically near the water barrels. Sasha is arguing that dinner time should be two hours earlier than it is, to which Jean tells her that sheās going to get kicked out of the Scouts with her behavior. Eren is insisting to Mikasa that he could take down one of the veterans in hand-to-hand combat, which is not true and everyone knows is not true.
Youāre bent forward with your hands braced on your knees, sweat dripping from your chin into the dust, lungs burning, thighs trembling with the intensity of being thrown onto your back three times by a man who has the emotional warmth of a snail. Levi stands several feet away, not even breathing hard. You hate him a little for it. You love him more.Ā
āYouāre leaving your right side open,ā he says, acting like thatās the main problem and not the fact that heās driven your spine to the ground so many times that the two of them might as well get married.Ā
You straighten your back, wincing when your shoulders throb in pain. āI noticed.ā
āCouldāve fooled me.ā
āIām choosing to believe youāre only being this mean because youāre impressed.ā
āIām not.ā
āWounded,ā you say, touching a hand to your chest. āAnd after I gave you such a good show.ā
Leviās eyes narrow as they fix on you. Thereās dirt on your cheek, gritty beneath the sweat. Your hair is tousled, strands sticking to your face and neck. You know you probably look half-dead, which makes it even more ridiculous when you grin at him as though youāre the one with the upper hand.
āIf I land a hit, you have to have tea with me,ā you say, shifting your stance again, though your legs are already screaming in pain.
You feel the shift around you immediately, the tiny ripple of attention passing across the training grounds. People know by now. They know you admire him. They know youāre reckless enough to smile at him when most soldiers avert their eyes. They know Levi has never once softened for you in front of them. But they donāt know that youāve already told him once. They donāt know that some small part of you is hoping the second time will land differently.
Levi looks at you for a long moment. āGood thing you wonāt,ā he finally says.
Then he attacks. Itās over quickly. You last longer than you did the first round, which youāll cling to as a personal victory when your pride has stopped bleeding. But itās not enough to make him sweat, and certainly not long enough to win yourself tea. He hooks your ankle and drops you onto the dirt with one hand gripping your sleeve and the other arm pressed against your throat.
Heās too close. Close enough that you can see the dark crescents beneath his eyes, the tiny nick near his jaw from shaving too quickly, the dust clinging to his hair. Close enough that his arm, still pressed against you, feels like the only solid point in the universe.
āYou know,ā you say breathlessly, āthere are easier ways to get me on my back.ā
Someone chokes in the distance. Jean, probably. Armin winces and covers his face. Leviās expression doesnāt change, but his fingers clench your sleeve before he releases you and stands up.
āGet up,ā he says.
You push yourself onto your elbows. āNo tea, then?ā
āNo.ā
āDinner?ā
āNo.ā
āA walk?ā
āNo.ā
āAn emotionally honest conversation?ā
āAre you always this annoying?āĀ
You laugh then. If you donāt laugh, you think you might cry a little. To anyone else, it would sound like he despises you, but you know deep down, he appreciates your presence. At least, you think he does. You hope.
Levi steps back, eyes already moving toward the others. āAgain,ā he says.
Your smile falters. āAgain?ā
āYou wanted to land a hit.ā
āI also want to retain the use of my spine.ā
āThen move correctly.ā
You groan, but you get up anyway. When he turns away to retrieve the training blade he had discarded near the fence, you miss how his gaze drops briefly to the place where his fingers had been on your sleeve. He didnāt mean to do that.
Levi hates this. Not you. This. This thing you keep doing. This reckless habit of saying what you feel for him as though feelings are not the most complex thing known to man, wanting someone has never been a mistake, and affection is something you can simply place in another personās hands and expect them not to drop it. He has no use for it. He has no patience for it.
And yet, when you stand again with dirt on your uniform and that stubborn light in your eyes, Leviās first though is not that youāre irritating like he says you are.
Itās that youāre still alive and with him.
His second thought is that he wants you to stay that way.
His third thought is so dangerous that he buries it before it finishes forming.
.
People start to make jokes about you and Levi. The Scouts have a talent for taking anything sensitive and turning it into humor. It beginsāas it always doesāin the mess hall. Itās loud. The long tables are crowded with soldiers leaning shoulder to shoulder, passing bread, stealing scraps, arguing over insignificant things (mostly Eren and Jean), laughing too loudly at stories that are shared between moments in the training yard.Ā
You sit with your squad, eating your soup as you try not to stare at the officersā table. You naturally fail. Levi sits apart even among the other officers, a cup of tea held lightly in one hand. Erwin is talking beside him, and Hange is gesturing enthusiastically enoughāprobably about their latest experimentsāto nearly knock over their own bowl. Levi appears to be listening, though his eyes flick briefly toward the table with Connie and Sasha when both of them laugh too loud.
Then he looks at you.
āYouāre doing it again,ā Petra says beside you.Ā
You look down at your soup immediately. āIām eating.ā
āYouāre daydreaming.ā
āIām not!ā
āYou absolutely are,ā Oluo says, leaning back with misplaced confidence. āItās pathetic, really.ā
āYou bite your tongue every other sentence trying to imitate him. Donāt start throwing stones,ā Eld says. Oluo sputters. You smile, grateful for the distraction and defense, but your eyes betray you by drifting toward Levi again; and this time Gunther catches it too.
āYou could always confess again,ā he says. You had told the squad about your confession a week or so ago, and naturally, they found it the funniest thing in the world. And then they called you the stupidest person in the world. āMaybe persistence will wear him down.ā
āIt works on doors,ā Eld says.
āLevi isnāt a door,ā Petra says.
āHeās got the personality of one,ā you say. That earns a few laughs.Ā
Across the room, Leviās eyes lift again. You know immediately that he heard that last part. The man could probably hear dust drifting in the air. For a moment, you consider looking away. Instead, because your pride is a stubborn creature, you lift your cup and toast it in his direction. His eyes narrow, but you smile anyway. He looks back to Erwin.
That should have been the end of it, but it wasnāt. After dinner, when the mess hall begins to empty and soldiers drift toward their beds or their duties, you find yourself in the kitchen near the dedicated tea stationāwhich youāre convinced was set up only for Leviāreaching for the kettle at the exact same time Levi does. Your fingers nearly brush, and itās enough for your breath to hitch. Levi glances at your hand, then at you.
āMove,ā he says.
āYou could say please,ā you mutter.
āI could also assign you stable duty.ā
āYou make romance very difficult, Captain.ā
He frowns at the title, but you donāt really notice it too much since youāre trying to not pour hot water on yourself. Youāre being ridiculous, you think. Itās only tea. He barely touched you. Levi is just standing this closeāclose enough that you can smell his soapābecause heās impatient and waiting for the kettle.
Behind you, someone snickers. You donāt turn, but Levi does. The snickering stops with impressive speed. āProblem?ā he asks.
āNo, sir,ā several voices answer.
You press your lips together to stop yourself from laughing. Levi turns back to you. āYou enjoy making yourself a spectacle?ā
You donāt know why, but those words hit a tender spot in your nerves. Your smile falters. āIām not trying to.ā
āArenāt you?ā
That stings. Not badly, but enough for you to look down at the tea in your cup, watching the surface tremble with the tiny motion of your hand. āI just like you,ā you say, quiet enough for only him to hear.
The silence that follows is almost deadly. Levi doesnāt move. You suddenly wish youād said it louder, made it into a joke or dressed it up with such an unserious tone that he could brush it off as nothing. But itās not nothing.
Leviās face tenses. āDonāt,ā he says.
One word. Not no. Not stop. Donāt. Youāve clearly reached for a wound without knowing it was there. Your throat tightens slightly. Itās stupid how much that single word hurts. The others have gone quiet behind you, though whether because they heard or because Leviās silence has made things tense, you donāt know. You nod once.
āSorry,ā you say.
Leviās jaw flexes. For the briefest moment, his eyes change, and a hint of regret moves through them, but then he reaches for his cup, turns away, and leaves you standing at the tea station with a teacup in your hand that suddenly feels too hot to hold.
You should probably stop. You tell yourself that while watching him disappear down the corridor. You tell yourself this while you stand there with the unbearable knowledge that you wonāt.
.
Levi doesnāt sleep well that night, which isnāt unusual. Sleep has always been an issue for him. Itās something his body demands but his mind resents, a brief surrender that leaves too much room for memory to crawl in with its dirty hands. Heās accustomed to lying awake for hours. Heās accustomed to the silence of the night and his own thoughts circling until they get stripped down to their bones.
Heās not used to thinking about the way your voice sounded when you said, I just like you. Then he realizes thatās a lie. He is used to thinking about your voice. Thatās the issue.Ā
Levi lies on his back in the dark, one arm folded behind his head. His eyes are fixed on the ceiling. He knows this has gone on long enough. Youāre careless with your affection. You throw it around like it costs nothing. Like you have so much of it that losing some wouldnāt hurt you.
Then he remembers your hand trembling around your cup. He realizes, no, youāre not careless. That would be easier. Careless people donāt look away so quickly when theyāre hurt. Careless people donāt apologize for taking up too much space in someone elseās guarded life. Careless people donāt learn how someone takes their tea and remembers it without being asked. Youāre not careless. Youāre one of the few sincere people he knows. Thatās worse to him.
Levi closes his eyes. Behind them, he sees you smiling at him across the training yard, flushed and breathless, daring him to be human for one second. He sees you in the mess hall, laughing because everyone else is laughing, even though your eyes keep searching for him. He sees you tonight, freezing around a single word.
Donāt.
He should have said something else. He should have said nothing. He should have made you stop sooner. If you stop, this ends. If this ends, no one gets hurt. Except he already hurt you.Ā
Levi opens his eyes. The ceiling offers no answers, no matter how hard he stares.
āDamn brat,ā he mutters.
.
The confessions become a routine, almost. Theyāre never spoken in the same way, but they become woven into the strange fabric of your days. Itās as familiar as the bitter taste of weak coffee when tea runs low and the scent of soap after Levi has ordered an entire hallway scrubbed because someone left a single muddy footprint in it.
You tell him in fractions. Sometimes lightly. Sometimes accidentally. Sometimes because the feeling rises up in you with nowhere else to go, and the alternative is swallowing it until you choke.Ā
Levi rejects you every time. Sometimes you think he has a list of things to say prepared. Sometimes you think he makes them up on the spot. Youāre not sure which scenario is worse.
The fourth time you confess comes in the stables, of all places. Rain has slicked the yard into a mess. The horses are restless tonight. Youāre adjusting tack and cleaning hooves, your sleeves rolled up despite the cold because one of the mares keeps nudging your elbow and trying to chew the cuff.
Then Levi enters. āYouāre doing that wrong,ā he says.
You glance down at the stirrup strap in your hand. āI havenāt even done anything yet.ā
āExactly.ā
You sigh and step aside, letting him take over, because while there are many hills youāre willing to die on, arguing with Levi about equipment care isnāt one of them. He checks and adjusts the straps that you already did. Then he lifts the tack onto the assigned mare to make sure everything looks good. The horse calms beneath his touch, which is unfair, because Levi is as soft as a sword, yet animals seem to understand him. You watch him stroke one hand down the mareās neck, murmuring something too low for you to catch. You feel a strange flutter in your stomach.
āYouāre gentle with them,ā you say before you can stop yourself.
Levi looks at you. āWith horses.ā
āHorses. Animals. Things that scare easily.ā
His expression goes blank, and it tells you instantly that youāve stepped too close to something heās not willing to reveal yet. You should retreat, and yet, you donāt.
āI like that about you.ā
His hand stops on the strap. Rain thunders on the roof. The mare huffs, her warm breath ghosting into the air. Levi stares at you for a long moment, then says, āYouāre reading too much into basic competence.ā
āMaybe,ā you say. āOr maybe youāre more careful than you want people to know.ā
Levi looks away before you can follow up, tightening the girth. āStop romanticizing me.ā
āIām not.ā
āYou are.ā
āMaybe Iām just seeing you for who you are.ā
He laughs humorlessly. āYou should look somewhere else.ā
You breathe in through your nose, the scent of hay and wet earth filling your nostrils. It should be comforting, but you feel foolish standing here with your heart spilling out of your chest like this.
āMaybe I donāt want to,ā you say.
Levi hardens. āThatās your problem.ā
You flinch. Itās tiny, but itās there. You know itās visible because Leviās eyes move immediately to your face. You can tell he caught it. He seems to recoil, his brows drawing faintly together, but then he looks away.
āFinish checking the tack,ā he says.
You nod. āYes, sir.ā
.
You donāt count the next time you confess because youāre half-delirious with exhaustion after an expedition that has left everyone hollow-eyed and covered with dirt and moving like ghosts through the building. You sit on a bench outside the infirmary with a bandage around your forearm and a bruise forming on your ribs, watching medics hurry past you. Levi is standing next to you with blood on his sleeveāblood that doesnāt belong to himāwith a look in his eyes that tells you heās not fully here.
Youāre alive. Heās alive. Too many others are not. That kind of thing makes people act and speak recklessly. Which is why you think you say what you say.
Levi hasnāt spoken to you since returning through the gate except to ask if you were injured, and when you showed him your arm, he clicked his tongue and said, āIdiot,ā with enough fury that you understood he had already been watching when that Titan came too close.
Now he stands in front of you, arms crossed, staring at the bandage. āYou hesitated,ā he says.
You look up at him. āWhat?ā
āOut there. You hesitated.ā
Youāre far too tired to defend yourself quickly. You say, exhausted, āI was trying to pull Kessler back.ā
āKessler was already dead.ā
You look away. You know that. You felt the moment that Kesslerās body relaxed and it started dragging you down. You felt the horrible slackness of his arm in your grip. You knew, even then, but knowing and letting go are not the same thing, and youāre too tired for Leviās version of mercy.
āI know,ā you say.
āDo you?ā
Your head snaps back up, anger flaring. āYes, Levi. I know.ā
His eyes narrow at the use of his name. Good. Let him hate it. Let him feel something.
āI know he was dead,ā you continue. āI know I almost got myself killed trying to save someone who was already gone. I know that was stupid. I know youāre going to tell me it was stupid. I know.ā
Levi stares at you as you breathe too hard. Your ribs ache. Your eyes burn, though you refuse to let any tears fall, because crying in front of Levi after a mission feels like bleeding in front of a shark. His jaw works once.
āThen donāt do it again,ā he says.
Itās still an order, but thereās a certain rawness underneath it that makes your anger falter. You look at him, at the dirt on his clothes, the blood on his sleeve, the exhausting plastered on his face. You look at the man everyone calls humanityās strongest, standing there as though strength has ever saved him from grief.
The words come out before you can stop them. āI worry about you too, you know.ā He tilts his head, expression hardening. You should probably stop, but you donāt. āI know you donāt want me to. I know you think itās stupid, or useless, or whatever else you tell yourself when people care about you, but I do.ā Your hands curl into fists against your thigh, nails biting into your palms. āI worry every time we leave the walls. I worry every time you go quiet after we come back. I worry because Iāā
āEnough.ā
You shut your mouth. Levi is no longer looking at you, but through you. You feel a shiver run down your spine. He canāt even look at you when turning you down?Ā
āDonāt make this into something it isnāt.ā
You swallow. āAnd what is it?ā
āA bad habit.ā
You feel the color drain from your face. The whole world closes around you. You can only focus on the mud on the soles of your boots, the muffled sounds of suffering through the infirmary doors, Levi standing there with his hands clenched so tightly beneath his crossed arms that his knuckles have blanched.
A bad habit. Thatās what your affection has become. An inconvenience. Something to correct.Ā
You nod once, though the movement feels fuzzy. āRight,ā you say.
Levi eyes flick back to yours. You stand before you can fully lock your gazes. Pain flashes through your ribs, and you nearly sway, but you keep yourself upright because you canāt bear the thought of him seeing you so weak.Ā
āI should get this checked again,ā you say.
Leviās gaze drops to your arm. āYou already did.ā
āI know.ā
He understands then. You see it happen, the moment he realizes youāre leaving because of him, not because of the wound. He doesnāt stop you. You walk away.Ā
Behind you, Levi remains still for a long time. Long after your footsteps disappear. Long after the rain begins again. Long after he realizes that the words he meant to use to keep you alive have found the most tender spot of your heart.
And still, you come back. You always come back. Even if it pains you to see him right now.
The next morning, you pass him in the corridor and give him a smile thatās smaller than usual. āCaptain,ā you say.
Levi nods once. He expects you to say something else. Some joke. Some reckless little comment. Some ridiculous remark about how he looks like he slept badly and should let you fix that by being charming towards him for ten minutes.
You say nothing, and you keep walking. Levi turns his head without thinking, watching you disappear around the corner. He has a strange feeling in his chest. Annoyance, he decides. Thatās all it is.
Thatās all it ever will be.
.
Days later, while youāre cleaning, you stand on a stool to reach for a stack of fresh rags on the highest shelf of the supply room. Shelves line the walls from floor to ceiling, packed with folded clothes, brushes, buckets, spare mopheads, bottles of polish, and enough cleaning solution to disinfect the entire world if Levi ever gets his way. The door opens behind you.Ā
āCareful,ā Levi says.
You glance down. He stands in the doorway, arms crossed, looking entirely unimpressed. With what, youāre not sure. He seems to be in a perpetual state of disappointment with the world. You canāt say you blame him.
āI am being careful,ā you reply.
āStanding on that thing will make you crack your skull open.ā
āItās a stool. Itās meant to be stood on.ā
ā...Itās wobbling.ā
āThatās because it fears you.ā
āIt should.ā
You laugh. It surprises you. Maybe it surprises him too, because Leviās eyes flick up to your face and stay there for half a second too long. Thereās a dangerous pause, and both of you feel it. You ignore it and reach for the rags too quickly to escape it, your fingers brushing the edge of the stack. You canāt quite grab it. The stool shifts.
Your balance suddenly tips just enough for your stomach to drop. Before you can correct yourself or grab onto anything, one of Leviās hands meets your waist, the other gripping your forearm. You feel your heart slam against your ribs.Ā
āIdiot,ā he snaps.
You canāt focus on anything except for his fingers on your waist, warm through the fabric of your shirt. Heās standing so close behind you that when you inhale, you catch his scent. Itās always smelled of clean soap with an undercurrent of something almost like cedar.
You look down at his hand. He does too. Then he releases you as if youāve burned him. āGet down,ā he says.
You quickly grab the rags and climb off the stool, holding the items to your chest. āThank you,ā you say.
āDonāt thank me. Stop doing stupid things.ā
āI was just trying to reach theāā
āDoesnāt matter.ā
āIāI had it under control, Captain.ā
āNo, you didnāt.ā
You pause, then you hesitantly say, āYou worry about me.ā
Leviās eyes flash briefly before he restrains it. āNo.ā
You tilt your head. āNo?ā
āNo.ā
āThen what was that?ā
āReflex.ā
āYour reflex was to grab my waist?ā
His mouth tightens, which is how you know youāve gotten under his skin. āMy reflex was to stop a soldier from injuring themselves because they canāt manage basic balance.ā
āThat almost sounded affectionate.ā
āIt wasnāt meant to be.ā
You smile then, because despite everything, despite the way he keeps pushing you away with both hands while somehow still catching you when you stumble, your heart keeps finding reasons to love him.Ā
āI think you care about me more than you want to admit,ā you say.
Levi steps closer. Your smile fades as his shadow falls over you. āYou donāt know what youāre talking about.ā
You hold his gaze, and for once, you donāt try to soften the moment with a joke or quip. There are moments you need to be serious, and this is one of them. āMaybe not, but I know what it feels like when you look at me.ā
āYouāre imagining things.ā
āAm I?ā
āYes.ā
His answer comes far too fast. Levi seems to realize it at the same time you do, because he sighs and looks away toward the shelves.Ā
āI wish youād let me care about you,ā you say quietly. Leviās head turns back, and suddenly, the room feels smaller than it did a moment ago.
āI donāt need that from you.ā
Itās not the cruelest thing heās said, but it still breaks a piece of you inside. You inhale slowly, gripping the rags a bit tighter. āSorry.ā
Frustration flickers across his face, but you can tell itās directed inward this time, at himself, at you, at the entire existence of this thing neither of you seems to be willing to label.
āJust do your job,ā he says, harsher now.
āYes, Captain.ā
You donāt see the small flinch he gives when you turn back to the shelves.
.
By now, Levi has recognized that there are stages to this. First, you say something reckless and stupid. Second, he rejects it. Third, you smile. Fourth, he says something. Fifth, your smile falters. Sixth, he feels like the worst kind of bastard for doing that. Seventh, he tells himself you brought it on yourself. Eighth, he thinks about it all night.
Itās a miserable system. He wishes to dismantle it. Heād like, more than that, to understand why he keeps waiting for it to happen again, because thatās the part he canāt excuse. He can excuse rejection. Rejection is clean and sets boundaries where your affection keeps trying to cross them. He can excuse harshness. Harshness is useful. Soldiers listen better to shouts than soft pleas. He can even excuse the anger that rises in him whenever you come too close, because anger is familiar, and familiarity makes things easier to handle.
But he canāt excuse the waiting. He canāt excuse his attention shifting when you enter a room. He canāt excuse the fact that he knows your footsteps by sound now. He canāt excuse how he notices when you donāt look at him. He definitely canāt excuse how guarded he feels when your voice comes gently, as if heās bracing for impact from a hand thatās never struck him.
He hates it. He hates the anticipation. He hates the feeling that lingers. He hates that some part of him, buried deep beneath the discipline and the loss and blood, wants to hear you say it again. He wants to know if you still mean it. He wants to know how many times he can refuse you before you finally decide heās not worth the trouble.
Part of him hopes the answer is infinite.
.
You find Levi in the corridor outside of Erwinās office, standing with a stack of documents in one hand and a cup of tea in the other. His expression is blank as always, lit by the dim afternoon light. The day has been mostly gray from morning onward. The entirety of headquarters feels submerged. Youāre carrying reports from the supply division when you stop beside him.
He looks tired. Levi often looks tired, but there are different tiers to it, and youāve learned them despite not trying to. This isnāt ordinary irritation or sleep deprivation. This is the kind that only comes after countless meetings and casualty estimates, after decisions that will ask other people to die in the name of maybeāsomedayābeing free from the Titans.
āYou should eat something,ā you say.
His eyes slide to you. āIām fine.ā
āNo, youāre not.ā
āI meant what I said. Leave me alone.ā
āNot until you eat.ā
He exhales through his nose. āAre you always this insistent?ā
āWith you? Usually.ā
āFantastic for me.ā
You smile. āYou make it very easy.ā He looks away. Instead of walking away like you know you should, you shift the reports against your chest and say, āI brought extra bread.ā
Leviās gaze returns to you. āWhat?ā
āFor you.ā You try to shrug it off, pretending like you havenāt been carrying it wrapped in cloth beneath the reports because you noticed he skipped lunch. āItās in my pocket. Which sounds unsanitary, but I wrapped it. Mostly.ā
He stares at you, then says, āYouāre ridiculous.ā
āProbably.ā
āI didnāt ask you to do that.ā
āI know.ā
āThen why?ā
You wish he wouldnāt ask. You wish, sometimes, that Levi would allow kindness to come to him without dragging it into the spotlight and demanding to know whether it has teeth or not. But heās looking at you now with a challenge in his eyes, but something else lingers. Something that tells you he doesnāt understand why anyone would go out of their way for him unless obligated or expecting something in return. Your heart hurts for him.
āBecause I care,ā you say.
Levi grips his documents a little more. āStop it.ā
āIām not asking you for anything.ā
āYou are.ā
You frown. āNo, Iām not.ā
āYou say things like that because you want me to say them back.ā
Thereās a bitter taste in your mouth, maybe because itās partly true, and maybe because itās not the whole truth, and heās chosen the ugliest piece of it to hold up between you.
āI want you to eat something,ā you say quietly. āThatās all this was.ā
Levi says nothing. You reach into your pocket, pull out the wrapped bread, and place it carefully on top of the documents in his hand. His eyes drop to it, then lift to meet you.Ā
āYou donāt have to make everything a battle,ā you say.
āI didnāt ask for this.ā
āNo, you didnāt,ā you say, the words coming out a little sadder than you intend. You see him hear it, and you see the shift in his eyes. But you donāt wait for him to respond. You walk away, reports held tightly against your torso, and you tell yourself that caring about someone shouldnāt feel this much like holding your hand over an open flame and pretending the burn is proof of devotion.
Behind you, Levi looks down at the bread. He stands there and stares at it for a long time. Then, with a quiet curse, he takes it with him into the office. He eats it later. Every bite tastes like guilt.
.
āYou know,ā Hange says one afternoon, leaning casually against the doorway of Leviās office while he tries to read a report and pretend theyāre not there, āmost people enjoy being adored.ā
āMost people are idiots,ā Levi says.
āTrue, true. But still. Itās good for morale.ā
Levi doesnāt look up from his papers. āIf youāre here to waste my time, find a better hobby.ā
āI have several. You hate all of them.ā
āBecause theyāre obnoxious.ā
āEverything is obnoxious to you.ā
Leviās quill pauses, and that makes Hange grin a little more. He resumes writing, shaking his head. This isnāt exactly new businessāHange always comes to annoy him for the most miniscule problems and to talk about the most insignificant topics. Heās learned how to block it out over the years.
āIām serious,ā Hange says. The shift in their tone catches Leviās attention. āShe cares about you.ā
āNo shit.ā
āAnd you care about her.ā
The quill stops again, and this time, it doesnāt resume. Levi lifts his eyes slowly, sharpened to a point. āCareful.ā
Hange, to their credit or possibly their doom, doesnāt turn around and leave like any sensible human would after the tone Levi just used against them. āThat sounded like a threat.ā
āIt was.ā
āMm.ā Hange tilts their head, studying him in such an invasive way that it makes Levi want to shove them into the nearest supply closet and lock the door. āYou get nastier after she talks to you.ā
āI get nastier after you talk to me too.ā
āYes, but thatās because Iām charming in a way that overwhelms you.ā
āYouāre exhausting in a way that makes murder understandable.ā
Hange waves his remark away. āWith her, itās different.ā
Leviās face goes blank. Is it different with you? He realizes now that while he blocks out Hangeās antics, he doesnāt block out yours. He realizes that all the times heās kicked Hange out for uttering a single stupid sentence, heās let you stay after uttering a dozen. Hange sees the realization and smiles softly.
āIām not saying you have to return anything,ā they say. āNo one can make you feel something you donāt. But if you donāt, you should stop letting her bleed herself dry trying to reach you.ā
āIām not letting her do anything.ā
āNo,ā Hange says, āyouāre just standing there while it happens.ā The room goes dangerously quiet. Levi looks down at the report, but the words have rearranged into nonsense. Hange sighs deeply. āFor what itās worth, I think she knows youāre not as indifferent as you act.ā
Leviās grip tightens around the quill. āSheās wrong.ā
āMaybe.ā He looks up at that. Hange gives him a sad little smile, which is worse than their normal grin, worse than their teasing, worse than anything else they could have done. āBut if sheās wrong, then you should make that clear before it hurts her even more.ā
Levi says nothing. Hange leaves.
That evening, you bring Levi tea. You didnāt plan on doing so. It just sort of happened. You told yourself several times that day that youād stop doing things like this, acting like your kindness is water and heās a dying flower that you can bring back to life. You pass the kitchen, see the kettle, and think of the tension in his face that morning.
So you make the tea. Because youāre weak and hopeful, and youāre beginning to suspect those are sometimes the same thing.
When you arrive at his office, the door is slightly ajar. You knock anyway. He calls for you to come in, and you step inside. Levi sits behind his desk, eyes on a report, the candlelight casting shadows across his face. The room is painfully neat, which you should have expected. Your presence feels immediately disruptive. You carry the cup carefully, both hands around the saucer.
āI made too much,ā you say.
Levi looks at the tea, then at you. āYou made too much tea?ā
āYes.ā
āFor yourself?ā
āYes.ā
āIn one cup?ā
You blink at him. He stares back at you. Your face warms slightly. Not your best attempt, but it was worth it. āFine. That was a terrible lie.ā
āEmbarassing.ā
āDeeply.ā
He leans back slightly, crossing his arms. āYou here for a reason?ā
The question should be harmless, but itās not. You think of all the times Levi has made you feel childish for just wanting a connection. You think of the fact that your hand is already starting to ache from holding the saucer too tightly.
āNo,ā you say. āNot really.ā You step closer and set the cup on his desk, exactly where he usually keeps it, because youāve grown to know the exact spot by now. āI just thought youād want some.ā
āI can make my own tea.ā
āIām aware.ā
āThen stop.ā
You look at him. His face is unreadable, but his eyes are clear as day. Thereās a tension and conflict there, anger held down so hard that you see it shaking. But youāre tired too. Tired of reading hope into every almost-soft thing he does. Tired of standing at the edge of him, calling out, and hearing only your own voice come back.
āStop bringing you tea?ā you ask.
āStop acting like this means something.ā
Your heart drops. āThis?ā
Levi looks at you. For once, you wish he wouldnāt. At the same time, you want him to.
āAll of it,ā he says. āIāve told you no multiple times. What part of that are you too stupid to understand?ā
All of it. The tea. The bread. The jokes. The concern. The confessions. The look you give him after missions. You remembering his preferences. The way you keep offering pieces of yourself and pretending it doesnāt matter when he refuses to take them. All of it.
You nod, though it feels like something has finally broken inside you.Ā
Youāre too tired to keep doing this.
āI see,ā you whisper.
Leviās eyes gleam in the moonlight as he looks at you. He looks like he might say something else. Something better. Something worse. You donāt even give him the chance.
āIām sorry,ā you say, your voice calm enough to make yourself believe that youāre not hurt. āI didnāt realize I was making you uncomfortable.ā
Levi makes a face, the most emotion youāve seen from him in months. āThatās notāā
āIāll stop.ā
He goes silent. You give him a small smile because you canāt seem to help yourself. Even now, youāre trying to make things easier for him, because some habits are harder to kill than hope. Then you turn toward the door.
Behind you, Levi says your name. It stops you for a second, but only a second. You look back. His hand is resting near the cup, not touching it. He looks almost panicked, if Levi Ackerman were capable of such an honest expression.
āYes?ā you say. He says nothing, and there it is. The whole tragedy of him. You wait one second. Then two. Then you nod. āGoodnight, Captain.ā
You leave. The door closes behind you. Levi sits very still. The tea cools untouched on his desk. And for the first time, the silence you leave behind feels less like peace and more like punishment.
.
You stop.Ā
You donāt stop in a manner that would give him the satisfaction of calling it dramatic, because the stubborn, wounded part of you refuses to let Levi Ackerman look at the ruin heās made of your heart.Ā
You donāt avoid your duties. You donāt let your work slip. You donāt flinch when his name is mentioned, and you donāt turn your head too quickly when he speaks, and you donāt stand in the kitchen holding the kettle, telling yourself that tea is only tea and kindness is only kindness and that none of it has to mean anything unless he lets it.
You simply stop offering. Thatās all.
Reports appear on his desk when theyāre supposed to. Your handwriting is clean across the pages. Supplies are accounted for. Gear is cleaned, straps are checked, blades are sharpened, and when you pass him in the corridor, you step aside with the same respect you would give any superior officer.Ā
āCaptain.ā
Nothing more. No little smile curling around the title. No teasing lift to your brow. No, you look terrible, did you sleep at all? No, I saved you bread before Sasha could inhale the entire basket. No, if you keep glaring like that, your face will get stuck and then what will we do?
Just Captain.
The first time it happens, Levi tells himself heās relieved.
He has paperwork in one hand and a cup of tea in the other. You walk down the hall with a crate of medical linens balanced against your hip, your sleeves rolled to your elbows. You see him, shift the crate higher, and move out of the way.
āCaptain,ā you say. Levi nods once. You keep walking. Thatās all there is to your interaction.
He should be relieved. Instead, he grips his teacup a little tighter. Idiot, he thinks, though heās not entirely sure whether he means you or himself.
By the second day, the relief has turned into irritation.
Youāre everywhere, because the universe apparently has something against him and is trying to force you into his everyday life when heās trying his hardest not to notice you. In the training yard, helping one of the newer recruits correct their stance with a voice soft enough that the soldier actually listens instead of stiffening under correction. In the mess hall, laughing at something Petra says, your face finally turned away from him. In the corridor outside Erwinās office, handing over a stack of documents to Miche with a polite nod before disappearing around the corner before Levi can decide whether he wants to speak to you.
Not that he does. He doesnāt. Thereās nothing to say, after all. He told you to stop, and you stopped. Thatās how orders are supposed to work.
Leviās spent his life surrounded by people who either donāt listen or listen too late, by soldiers who break formation, by fools who mistake hope for strategy, by men who die because they canāt follow one simple command when terror has sunk its teeth into them. He should appreciate obedience. He should appreciate silence. He should appreciate how you gave him exactly what he asked for.
Instead, every āCaptainā feels like a door slamming shut in his face. And the worst part, the most aggravating, unforgivable part, is that youāre not even punishing him. Punishment would be easier. Punishment would give him something to push against. If you snapped at him, he could snap back. If you glared, he could meet it with his own colder stare. If you cried, if you accused him, if you said, how dare you, Levi, after all the chances I gave you, then at least he would know what to do.
But you do none of them. Youāre kind. Professionally kind. You answer when spoken to. You follow orders without hesitation. You still look after the youngest soldiers, still trade your last piece of bread to Sasha, still smile when Armin asks a question and still help Connie adjust his gear that he should know how to adjust by now. You havenāt become colder in all aspectsāyouāve merely taken your warmth away from him.
And Levi, who has survived hunger, blood, filth, loss, and the Undergroundās endless ruthlessness, finds himself undone by the absence of things he once pretended not to want.
By the third day, Hange notices. They appear beside him in the training yard while heās watching you across the dirt, though heād rather be disemboweled with his own blades than admit that heās watching you. Youāre speaking to Eld near the fence, head tilted as you listen, one hand braced on your hip, the other gesturing toward the Titan dummies. Eld says something that makes you laugh.
Hange hums. āInteresting.ā
āWalk away,ā Levi says.
āI didnāt even say anythingāā
āYou were about to.ā
āI was going to say the weatherās nice.ā
āItās overcast.ā
āEmotionally, then.ā
Levi turns his head just enough to glare. Hange grins, but their expression softens too quickly, and thatās how he knows heās in trouble. He can handle Hangeās manic curiosity, their teasing, their horrifying experiments, their complete lack of respect for personal space or peace. He canāt handle pity.
āShe stopped,ā Hange says.
Levi looks back toward the yard. āGood.ā
Hangeās brows rise. āVery convincing.ā
āShut up.ā
āYou told her to?ā Levi says nothing, and thatās answer enough. Hange exhales, not quite a sigh. āWell, congratulations. You won.ā
Hange looks ahead at you. Across the yard, you take the training blade Eld offers you and shift into position. Levi looks back at you, and he sees how dirt has already lined your face. Thereās no bright glance tossed in his direction, no grin, no silent invitation for him to notice you. It makes him furious. Not at you, thoughāthat would be simpler. No, the fury coils inward, because thereās a place inside him that recognizes that this silence is something he made with his own hands.
āI did what needed to be done,ā he says.
Hange tilts their head. āFor who?ā
Levi doesnāt answer, and instead, he watches you lunge, watches Eld parry, watches your foot slide back to correct your balanceāsomething you learned from him. There are pieces of him in your movements now. Small ones. Things he taught you without meaning to leave any part of himself behind.
For who?
His mouth dries. For you, he wants to say, but even in his own head, the lie limps, because if this were for you, then why does your smile seem weaker when you think no one is looking?
.
That evening, you deliver papers to his office. You knock once.Ā
āCome in,ā he says, and he hates that he knows itās you just by the sound of your footsteps approaching. You step inside with the papers held to your torso. For some stupid reason, Levi expects tea. Thereās none, only papers. You cross the room, set the stack on the corner of his desk, and take a half step back.
āCommander Erwin asked that these be reviewed before morning,ā you say.
Your voice is perfectly calm. Itās built for distance, polished until nothing tender can catch onto it. Leviās eyes shift from the reports, then to you.
āYou can leave them,ā he says.
You nod. āYes, Captain.ā
Levi swears his eye twitches from the title. āYou donāt have to call me that every time,ā he says.
You look at him then, and he almost wishes you hadnāt. Your eyes are not angry or pleading, but theyāve been extinguished of that hope youāve been carrying with you for months now.
āI thought you preferred professionalism,ā you say.
Levi grips the arm of his chair slightly. āI prefer people not putting words in my mouth.ā
A flicker of hurt passes over your face, but itās gone as soon as it arrives. āUnderstood.ā
He should stop. He knows he should stop, but the silence after your answer feels unbearable, and Levi is not built for handling unbearable things he canāt kill. āThat all?ā
āYes.ā
You turn toward the door. He feels a spike of panic, the kind heās only ever felt when he was galloping in the rain to return to Isabel and Furlan. His stomach sinks. āWait.ā
You stop. Your hand rests on the doorknob. Levi stares at your back, at the tension in your shoulders. Youāre holding yourself with a carefulness that implies youāre waiting for something to split you open at any moment.
What does he want to say? Donāt go? No, ridiculous. I didnāt mean it? He did mean it. At least, he meant part of it. The part that wanted safety. The part that believes every relationship eventually ends in the ultimate heartbreak of the other personās name carved into stone. I miss you? Absolutely not. The words rise to his tongue anyway, but Levi crushes them beneath the heel of his pride.
You wait. He says nothing, so you glance back at him. āYes?ā you say.
His throat works. The candlelight looks so soft against your face, and only then does he see how tired you are. Not physically, though perhaps that too, but tired emotionally. Tired of holding your hands to someone who keeps treating them like weapons.
Levi looks away first. āNothing,ā he says. The word tastes bitter in his mouth.
Your expression doesnāt change, and somehow that makes him feel worse. āGoodnight, Captain.ā
You leave. Levi sits there for a long moment, staring at the place where you stood. The reports remain untouched. His tea, made by his own hand and brewed exactly the way he likes it, has gone cold beside him. He lifts the cup anyway, takes one sip, and slams it back down so hard that the porcelain almost cracks.
It tastes wrong.
Everything is wrong.
.
Levi sees you laughing with Eld in the training yard, and the feeling that moves him makes him so nauseous that he can only stand there with his hand still on his harness and hate everything about himself.
Itās not like he feels betrayal. He doesnāt overhear any confession and thereās no obvious intimacy that any reasonable man could point to and say āthatās the reason my blood is boiling.ā Youāre simply standing near the fence, one shoulder leaned against the post, your arms crossed as Eld speaks to you. His hair is messy from training, and his expression is unmistakably fond. Fond.
Leviās eye twitches.
Eld says something too low for Levi to hear from across the yard, and you laugh. Not that small, polite laugh youāve been giving Levi lately (at least before you started ignoring him weeks ago), the one that feels like a closed door and leaves him standing outside of it like an idiot. You laugh properly. Your head tips back and your face eases in a way that Levi hasnāt seen directed at him in days. Eld smiles, knowing heās the reason you look a little less tired now.
Leviās grip on his harness worsens until it creaks. He should look away, but he doesnāt. Eld steps closer, enough to reach past you and grab his coat hanging from the side of the training dummy, but from where Levi stands, the movement brings him into your space. Your shoulder brushes his. You donāt even flinch or step back. You only look down at what heās doing, say something that makes his smile widen, and then you lift your hand to shove lightly at his shoulder.
Itās the same kind of touch you used to give Levi without thinking. A hand on his sleeve when you wanted his attention. Fingers brushing his hand when you set tea beside him. Your shoulder bumping his when you walked too close in a corridor and pretended it was accidental. The touch he had rejected so many times that you finally learned to control it.
Levi doesnāt know what he feels, but he convinces himself itās not jealousy. Jealousy is for men who think they have a claim. Levi is without a claim. He made sure of that. In fact, he was the one who caused the distance with each cold reply, each command, and the times when you were vulnerable with him and he pushed it back as if tenderness was a weapon aimed at his throat.
So no, he has no right to feel anything when Eld leans closer to you. He has no right to hate the way you seem calmer beside him. He has no right to remember your face when you once told him that you wish heād let you care about him, and how he had answered how he didnāt need that from you.
Eld says something else. You smile. Levi moves before he decides to.
By the time he crosses the yard, his expression has gone sharp enough to send three nearby soldiers into immediately pretending to be very busy with their gear. Eld notices him approaching first, straightening his posture the way a subordinate does when they realize their superior is walking toward them.
āCaptain,ā Eld says.
You turn. The smile fades from your face. Not entirelyāyouāre too composed for that now, too determined not to let Levi see where the pain still lives, but he sees the change anyway, the armor coming up to shield you.
āCaptain,ā you say.
Levi looks from you to Eld, then back to you. āYou done wasting time?āĀ The words are even colder than he wants them to be. Or they might be just as cold as he means them to be, because quite often being cruel is more acceptable, in his mind, than standing there and confessing that he actually walked across the yard because another another man made you laugh and Levi wanted, with a sudden violence that disgusts him, to insert himself between you and that warmth.
Eldās brows draw together. You freeze. āIām not wasting time,ā you say. āEld was helping me with the new recruitsā drills.ā
āLooked like a lot of laughing for drills.ā
The silence that follows is thin and almost dangerous. Eldās eyes move briefly between the two of you, and because heās neither stupid nor cruel, he steps back. āIāll go help Auvrayās squad. Captain.ā He gives you one last look, almost protective, then leaves.Ā
Levi hates that too. He hates that Eld looks at you as if your feelings are something he knows how to handle gently. He hates more the fact that Eld might be better at it than he is. When the space between you clears, you face Levi fully.
āThat was unnecessary,ā you say.
āExcuse me?ā Levi scoffs.
āYou heard me.ā
A month ago, the challenge in your voice would have come wrapped in humor. You probably would have tilted your head at that moment and smiled, softened the tone for him so you could pretend you were just teasing. This time, thereās no smile, nor softness offered for his comfort. He should be glad. He isnāt.
āYouāre still on duty,ā he says.
āSo is Eld.ā
āEld isnāt the one Iām talking to.ā
Your lips part slightly, half in surprise, half in disbelief. āNo. I suppose not.ā
Leviās hands ball into fists at his sides. He wants to ask what that means. He wants to ask if thereās something between you two. He wants to ask if Eld has touched your hand, if youāve brought Eld tea, if you smiled at Eld the way you used to smile at him. He wants to ask if youāre happy now that youāve stopped talking to him. But he knows he has no right to ask any of it.
āYou should be more careful,ā Levi says instead, because his mouth has always known how to be the worst possible weapon. āPeople get the wrong idea when you throw yourself at every man who gives you attention.ā
He did not mean to say that.
Your face goes blank. Completely, utterly blank. You donāt even look hurt or angry. Itās just blank. His stomach drops. Your fingers twitch once at your side, but your voice, when it comes, is surprisinglyāpainfullyāeased.
āI see.ā
You step back. Levi says your name. It leaves him before he can stop it, stripped of rank and anger and all the useless armor he keeps trying to force between himself and whatever the hell youāre doing to him.
āDonāt, Captain.ā You turn away and leave without looking back.
The title hits harder than if you had slapped him. He honestly would have preferred if you slapped him. Levi just stands there, frozen, watching you leave while the recruits pretend not to stare, pretending that they didnāt just overhear the most emotionally charged conversation theyāve heard in their entire time in the military.
He thinks of following you at first. Then he thinks of what he would say. Nothing comes. Nothing that would undo it. Nothing that would explain why he keeps turning fear into a knife and then acting surprised when you bleed. So he stays where he is until your figure disappears amongst the crowd. Only then does he realize Eld has stopped near the fence and is looking at him with disappointment. Levi looks away first.
By the time he reaches his office, the anger has returned, boiling hotter than shame. He shuts the door harder than necessary, and the sound breaks through the silence of the room before it rushes back in, deeper than before. He looks at the teacup waiting on the corner of the desk, empty, because heās not yet made tea and you no longer do.
Itās better this way, he tells himself. No more pointless kindness. No more interruptions. No more break snuck to him because you noticed he skipped a meal. No more stupid confessions. No more of you looking at him like he could be anything other than what he is. A soldier. A killer. A survivor by habit, not by virtue. A man who has spent his life learning the names of the people he couldnāt save.
Levi grips the edge of the desk, his knuckles turning white. He remembers the exact words he said to you not two hours ago. The memory of your face after he said it hits him with such force that his breath hitches.
āFuck,ā he mutters.
He pushes away from the desk, pacing once toward the window, then back again, restless energy crawling beneath his skin. He wants to clean something. He wants to tear something apart. He wants to go back in time into the yard and rip the words out of the air before they can reach you. If he could, he would slap himself before he could even get the words out.
Instead, he does nothing. His thoughts circle you first. Your hand in his field of vision as it places tea on his desk. Your melodic voice. Your laugh across the mess hall. Your eyes, now careful, guarded because he taught you to guard them.
Then Eld. Eld standing too close. Eld making you laugh. Eld smiling at you. Eld looking at you like he wouldnāt punish you for wanting to be wanted.
Leviās jaw clenches so hard it aches. This isnāt about Eld. Thatās the truth, and he hates it. Eld is a good soldier. Loyal. Kind without making a spectacle of it. Heās the kind of man who probably knows how to accept affection. The kind of man who might say yes if you chose him instead.
The thought makes Leviās stomach turn. He braces both hands on the desk and lowers his head. He realizes now what heās been avoiding. It isnāt jealousy; it isnāt irritation or discipline or concern with professionalism. Itās fear. Raw fear.
Itās been there from the start, waiting beneath every rejection, every insult, every cold turn of his shoulder. He sees it now. You were never the danger. Wanting you was. Wanting you means imagining you outside the walls and worrying you wonāt return. Wanting you means knowing the exact sound of your laugh and then imagining a world where he never hears it again. Wanting you means letting your existence become a part of his own, and losing you would nearly kill him. No, it would kill him.
And Levi knows loss.
His mother. Kuchel, pale and motionless in a bed that heād seen too much of. Her hand no longer able to reach for him. Her voice gone before he was old enough to understand all the ways the world could take from him.
Then Isabel. Loud, passionate Isabel, with her recklessness and her impossible faith that the world above could be something other than a nightmare. Isabel, who had called him big brother with such devotion that heād pretended to hate it because pretending was safer than letting himself feel vulnerable.Ā
Furlan too. Furlan, who had trusted Leviās judgement more than anyone had a right to, who followed him out of the Underground, who believed, who died because the world is merciless and Levi is never fast enough when it matters most.
His comrades. Countless comrades buried beneath banners and speeches and the rotten consolation that they died for humanityās cause. Faces that once turned toward him in trust before the Titans took them.Ā
Connection, to Levi, has never been safe. To him, itās a door opening into a room that will one day be empty. A hand reaching for his that will one day go cold. A voice saying his name that will one day stop answering.Ā
So he rejected you. Again and again and again. And some sick, righteous part of him had called it mercy. If he kept you away, you would be safer. If he made you stop loving him, you would stop standing too close to the blast radius of everything he loses. If he refused to want you, then losing youāif the world ever took you, when the world took youāwould not destroy him.
Except youāre not gone. Youāre alive. And heās still managed to lose you.
Levi sits slowly in his chair, his legs suddenly feeling unsteady. He did this. Not titans. Not the Underground. Not fate, not duty, not the walls, not the endless bloody machinery of survival. Him. His fear. His hands pushing away the one person stubborn enough to keep reaching for him. To keep trusting him.
He doesnāt move for a while. The office grows darker around him, the last of the daylight fading behind the curtains. Somewhere outside, he hears footsteps. Theyāre not yours. He wishes he wasnāt so disappointed. He hears voices fall and rise. Life continues with an indifference that feels almost insulting.
Then comes a knock at the door. For a moment, he thinks foolishly that itās you. Then the hope is snuffed by reality, and he doesnāt bother answering. The door opens anyway. Hange steps inside, takes one look at him sitting motionless behind his desk, and pauses. They already have a knowing look on their face.
āYou know,ā Hange says, closing the door behind them,ā for someone so smart, youāre impressively stupid about feelings.ā
Levi sighs deeply. āFuck off, Four Eyes. Not in the mood.ā
āNo, I imagine youāre not.ā Hange approaches without waiting for permission and leans against the edge of the desk. āI saw what happened. Eld looked like he wanted to hit you.ā
āEld knows better.ā
āMm. He does. Thatās probably the only reason he didnāt.ā
Levi looks away. The words should irritate himāand they doābut beneath the irritation is shame, and shame has sharper teeth. Hange studies him for a moment.
āWhat did you say to her?ā they ask.
Leviās eyelids flutter down briefly. It would be easy for him to lie. He could tell Hange to get out and leave him alone with the wreckage he caused. Instead, because some exhausted part of him is too tired to keep bleeding in secret, he says, āSomething I shouldnāt have.ā
āThat bad?ā Levi gives them a look, and it makes Hange wince. āOuch. That bad.ā
Silence settles between them. For once, Hange doesnāt rush to fill it. Levi stares at the teacup near his hand. He wonders if you still make tea for yourself. He hasnāt seen you near the tea station in a whileābut then again, you could just be avoiding him that efficiently. Or perhaps you just avoid the places where he lingers.
āShe stopped,ā he says finally.
āYou asked her to,ā Hange says.
āI know.ā
āDid you mean it?ā
Leviās throat tightens. That should be an easy question. He's built his entire life on making hard answers sound simple, but nothing about you has ever been simple, not from the first time you looked at him like he wasnāt nearly as scary as everyone was making him out to be.
āI thought I did,ā he says.
āAnd now?ā Hange asks.
Leviās hand wraps around the teacup, though thereās nothing in it. He thinks of you laughing with Eld. He thinks of your face going blank. He thinks of how much easier it was when you loved him loudly enough that he could pretend your heart was the problem and not his own cowardice.
āI donāt know how to do this,ā he says.
Hange doesnāt ask what this meansāthey know. āStart by not hurting her every time she gets close.ā
Levi bitterly laughs once under his breath. āBrilliant advice.ā
āYouāre ever so welcome.ā His eyes lift to meet them, and Hangeās expression is painfully serious now. He hates when they look like thisāit means theyāre impossible to escape. āYouāre allowed to be scared, Levi.ā
He looks away instantly. āNo.ā
āYes,ā they say, firmer. āYou are. After everything youāve lost, youād be insane not to be. But being scared doesnāt give you the right to make her feel disposable.ā
Leviās stomach churns. āI know,ā he says. It sounds like defeat. Maybe it is.
Hangeās voice gentles. āDo you love her?ā
Levi freezes. His first instinct is to refuse. His second is anger. His third is to remember your face. Your smile. Your voice that softens only for him. Your absence now, filling his office more than your presence ever dared. Levi lowers his gaze. Thereās nothing to hide behind anymore.
He nods.
Hange doesnāt smile like they normally would. They only nod once, confirming what they already knew and had been kind enough to let him reach on his own. āThen youād better figure out how to say that to her before someone else does.ā Levi glares at them, and they lift both hands in defense. āJust being real. Sheās a catch.ā
Real. Levi has always hated that word, but this reality sits in front of him now, unavoidable. He loves you. He hurt you. You might not wait for him to become brave. The idea ought to make him stand, should send him out of his office, down the corridor, to your door with an apology and every wall inside him burning down behind it. Instead, he stays seated, because despite his love being genuine, the fear that was born first is still the one to rule.
Hange pushes away from the desk. āFor what itās worth,ā they say at the door, āI think she loved you enough to listen.ā
Loved. Past tense. Levi flinches at that. Hange notices, but they leave anyway, the door clicking shut behind them. Levi sits alone in the dark with the word still lodged in his chest.
Loved.
.
Levi didnāt plan on drinking. He doesnāt drink. Not normally. He definitely doesnāt drink because he enjoys it. Enjoyment has always been something he doesnāt trust easily. He drinks because the bottle has been sitting untouched in the bottom drawer of his desk ever since Erwin left it there three months ago after some late night visit that had run past midnight and into the hours of the morning. He drinks because the office is silent now. He drinks because Hangeās question wonāt stop replaying in his mind.
Do you love her?
He grabs the glass and pours the amber liquid into the cup with a hint of anger and almost spite. He doesnāt lift the glass for a toast to the empty room. Thereās nothing worth celebrating or honoring in this moment. No winning, no relief, no opening up of himself that could be considered noble or brave. Thereās only the fact that he loves you. And because Levi is a man whoās lived by the rule of cutting off weakness before the world can get its hands on it, that very fact feels like a wound in his gut, and he has no idea how to bandage it.Ā
He drinks. The liquor burns down his throat and warms his chest. The heat gives him something physical to hate for a blessed second. He pours again. Outside his office, the headquarters eases into a slumber. Someoneās laughter echoes down the corridor before itās hushed by another person. A door closes somewhere else. The fact that life continues is taunting him, acting like it doesnāt matter that his entire world has shifted because you finally stopped loving him.
Well, you didnāt stop. He doesnāt know if you stopped. He only knows you learned how to be silent about it. He taught it to you. The thought makes his heart skip a beat.
Levi leans back in his chair and closes his eyes, but the darkness behind them provides no mercy. It gives him the image of you instead, because his mind canāt go anywhere else. He imagines you in the supply room. You in the corridor, placing bread in his hand. You in the stables, admiring his connection to animals. You outside of the infirmary with both physical and emotional wounds. You in the courtyard today, your face going blank after he used your own affection against you.
āDamn it,ā he mutters, pressing the heel of his hand against his brow ridge. Heād just meant to protect himself. Heād looked at the recklessness of your devotion and saw every grave heās stood over. His motherās body. Isabelās smile turned slack. Furlanās trust, wasted on the impossible idea that Levi could let them all out alive.
Levi drinks again and again. The room begins to spin slightly. His reflection waits in the dark window as he turns to face it. Pale, blurred, a man with too much blood on his hands. A man who has no idea what to do with love except ruin it. Heās a coward.
If rejecting you had been mercy, then why had it only hurt you? If pushing you away had been kindness, then why had your voice gone so careful around him? If he had been protecting you, then why does the memory of your face make him feel like the danger was never the world outside the walls, but him?
He pours again, his hand shaking this time, and a small amount spills onto the desk. Normally, he would reach immediately for a cloth. Tonight, he only stares at the dark stain spreading over the polished wood. His mouth twists in both disgust and irritation.
āGreat,ā he says to no one.
Every time he raises the cup, it feels heavier. So does the truth. He loves you. He loves the way you say his name. He loves the stubborn tilt of your chin when you refuse to let his cruelty be the only thing between you. He loves you for noticing when he doesnāt eat, doesnāt sleep, when heās so angry that you know grief alone couldnāt cause it. He loves you, and it scares him so much that heās tempted to seek refuge behind every locked door inside himself.
Instead, drunk and stripped bare by the quiet, Levi thinks of you. Your room is down the corridor, past the turn by the east stairwell, three doors from the end. He knows it by heart, despite not being there often.
For several long minutes, he sits motionless with the glass in his hand, raises to press against his forehead. He breathes deeply through the horrible desire of wanting to see you and the equally horrible knowledge that, deep down, he has no right to ask anything of you now.
Then he stands. His vision swims. Levi grips the desk, scowling at the fact that he canāt even balance himself. Itās pathetic, he thinks groggily, but he doesnāt sit back down. He leaves the bottle open on the desk. The spilled liquor dries beside his hand. He stumbles into the corridor.Ā
You need to hear the truth from him. Even if you no longer want it.
.
You sit on the edge of your bed with a half-mended shirt in your lap, needle in your fingers. The motions are familiar after years of practice, though it has been a while since youāve needed to mend something. Youāre surprised, considering the less than gentle treatment your clothing constantly endures. Youāre glad, however, that your mother taught you how to sew. You think briefly that you should send her a letter soon.Ā
Then a knock comes. Itās so late in the night that you think you might have imagined it. You shake your head, dislodging the illusion, and return to your sewing. But then the knock comes again, more urgent. Your hands stop moving. Your stomach turns at the first thought that comes to your mind. But you know itās not him. Why would it be? You sigh and set the shirt aside, then stand.
When you open the door, youāre immediately proven wrong. Levi is standing before you, one hand braced against the doorframe, his hair slightly messy, his cravat loose at the throat, his eyes too dazed. Levi is many thingsācontrolled, scary enough to whip grown men into shape just by entering a room, but heās never this. Never unsteady or vulnerable. Never looking at you like this as if heās spent the entire night debating and fighting over the urge to go to your room, still not knowing whether he deserves to enter.
āCaptain?ā you say.
His face twists. He leans in slightlyānot intentionally, but from a loss of balance. āDonāt call me that.ā
Then you smell the liquor. You blink, taken aback. āLevi, are you drunk?ā
His mouth pulls into a line thatās too bitter to be a smile. āUnfortunately.ā
You donāt know what to do. You donāt know what to do with him at your door in the middle of the night, drunk enough that heās tipping over but sober enough that his eyes are still full of pain. You donāt know if you should let him in or tell him to screw off, whether to be worried or angry, whether to protect yourself or reach for him before he walls. And the worst part is that deep down, you still want to care for him.
āWhy are you here?ā you ask.
Levi looks at you, and his face breaks in a way youāve never seen before. āI fucked up.ā
The words come rough and raw. Theyāre not even surprising to you, because youāve known that for weeks now, but hearing him say it is different. You peer down the hall and step aside before you can convince yourself not to.
āCome in before someone sees you like this.ā He enters slowly. You close the door behind him, and when you turn around, heās just standing there, his shoulders and hands tensed, looking at everything except your face. āYou should sit down.ā
āNo.ā
āLeviāā
āI wanted you.ā You freeze. His eyes finally lift to yours. āI wanted you. Every damn time. Every time you said it, every time you smiled at me, every time you made those stupid jokes. I wanted to say yes. And I didnāt, because Iām a coward.ā
You swear all of the air in the room escapes at that moment. You stare at him, your heart pounding in your chest, shock and hurt and old longing colliding so violently that you almost feel sick. This is what you wanted once, isnāt it? This confession, this man standing in front of you and finally saying the thing youāve been dying to hear. But it only came after he drank. After heās made you feel stupid for offering what he now claims he wanted. You swallow hard.
āYouāre drunk,ā you say. āWe shouldnāt talk about this now.ā
āNo,ā Levi says, stepping closer, then stopping himself. āYouāre going to hear it. You listened to every shitty thing I said. You can listen to this too.ā
Heās not wrong. You did listen. Every time. You stood there and took every dismissal, every wound, and you kept making excuses for him because loving him was easier than admitting he had been hurting you on purpose.
Your eyes burn. āFine,ā you whisper. āSay it, then.ā
āIām sorry,ā Levi says. He swallows, looks down, then forces himself to look at you again. āIām sorry for all of it. For making you feel like you were stupid for caring. For treating you like dirt under my shoes. For taking every good thing you gave me and throwing it away because I didnāt know how to deal with it.ā
Your throat closes. You want to hate him. You think hatred would be far easier than thisāthe fact that you still love him while still remembering why you learned to retreat. āYou made me feel pathetic.ā Levi flinches at that. For a second, youāre happy, and then you hate yourself for thinking that.
āI know,ā he says, his voice smaller than youāve ever heard it.
āYou made me wish I hadnāt said any of it,ā you continue. āI meant it every time, Levi. Even when I made it sound like a joke. Even when I smiled. Even when everyone laughed. I meant it, and youāā You pause. āYou made me feel humiliated.ā
Leviās eyes close briefly. When he opens them again, theyāre wet. āI know.ā
āThat doesnāt fix it.ā
āIām not trying to fix it.ā
āThen what are you trying to do here?ā
He looks at you so helplessly that it hurts you. āI donāt know how to do this.ā
āDo what?ā
His gaze drops to your hands, then returns to your face, and when he speaks, the words sound like theyāve been dragged out of the deepest, most guarded place in him. A place you have rarely, if ever, seen.
āLove someone.ā
The room goes silent. The candle flickers across his face. Your heart twists. Levi takes a shaky breath. You match him.
āBut I love you. I do. And Iām sorry it took me hurting you to stop lying about it.ā
Part of you wants to reach for him. The other part of you wants to step back. You want to tell him you love him too, and you always have. You want to ask why love had to be dressed in apology. Instead, you look at the floor between you.
āLevi,ā you say quietly. āI still love you. But Iām hurt.ā
āI know,ā he says.
āAnd I donāt forgive you yet.ā
āGood.ā That surprises you. You raise both eyebrows, and he gives a humorless little exhale. āYou shouldnāt. Not just because I finally stopped lying to myself.ā
āYou need to sit down,ā you say.
This time, he doesnāt argue. He lowers himself into the chair by your desk, elbows resting on his knees, head lowered. He looks so exhausted. You pour him some water from your pitcher and bring it to him. Both of you freeze momentarily when his fingers brush yours when he takes the cup. He withdraws first.
āIāll say it again when Iām sober,ā he says hoarsely. You look down at him. āIf youāll let me.ā
Your fingers curl around the empty space where the cup had been. The answer should be simple, but it isnāt. You donāt know if you want to hear those words without the barrier of alcohol. They might just break your resolve.
After a moment, you nod. āSay it sober,ā you whisper. āAnd then weāll see.ā
Levi nods and closes his eyes.
.
Morning breaks through the thin curtains, laying a strip of light across the floor and the half-mended shirt still folded at the end of your bed. Levi wakes in a chairāthe same chair he was in last night. Heās no stranger to falling asleep in chairs. Where others would be aching, he feels fine, save for the headache pulsing behind his eyes.
He doesnāt remember where he is for a second. Then he looks around, and he remembers everything about last night. The drinking. Coming to your door. Your face when he said he wanted you. Him confessing his love.
Levi sighs. Across the room, youāre laying in bed, turned toward the wall, blanket pulled to your shoulder. You look peaceful, or close enough to peaceful that guilt moves through him with a force that nearly brings him to his feet to leave before you can wake up. Maybe that would be better. He could go back to his quarters and pretend this never happened.
He shifts carefully, trying not to make the chair creak, but the movement sends pain up his spine and a low sound leaves him before he can swallow it. You stir in your sleep and wake. Levi freezes. You open your eyes slowly and turn around to face him. Now that he looks at you, you donāt look like youāve just woken up from sleep. You donāt have that grogginess most do, and your hair is neatly brushed.
He gets confirmation of this when you get out of bed and grab a teacup, filled with tea that you must have brewed before he woke up. You carry it over to him. He stares at it, then at you, and you hold it out.
āWell?ā you say.
Levi takes the teacup, though his fingers shake around the porcelain. He doesnāt even bother to hide it this time. He looks at the caution in your eyes, the hurt still sitting behind it, the hope that lingers. His mouth dries and his throat closes up, but he forces the words out anyway.
āI love you,ā he says.
Your lips part slightly. āYouāre sure?ā
Levi lets out a breath that almost becomes a laugh, though itās not really a laugh, more like an exhale of exhaustion laced with a hint of relief. āI was sure before,ā he says. āI was just an idiot.ā
Your face crumples for a second. You never thought this day would come, that he could utter those words. You didnāt realize how badly you wanted this. How much it cost to hear it now.
He sets the tea aside and stands, keeping enough distance that you can choose whether to close it. Youāre not sure if you want to yet, but the urge trembles between you.Ā
āIām sorry,ā he says again.
You look down, blinking hard to force the tears back. āPlease donāt hurt me every time youāre scared.ā
Levi nods. āI wonāt. I promise.ā
The silence comes to rest between you. Then, carefully, you step forward and reach for his hand. Levi looks down as your fingers touch his, stunned by the gentleness of it, by the fact that after everything, youāre still willing to reach out. He grabs your hand and wraps his fingers around yours.

Your favorite part of the day has always been dinner time. The dining hall always gets loud, exhaustion loosening everyoneās tongues so laughter spills easier and smiles come brighter. Itās usually the same thing every nightāSasha trying to barter food from everyone, Eren and Jean arguing about something stupid and menial again before Mikasa cuts in and threatens to kick both of their asses, and Ymir showering Christa with love and affection.Ā
Youāre halfway through your stew, watching how Mikasa has slowly been moving the carrots she doesnāt want into Erenās bowl while he talks too passionately to realize it. Your conversation had somehow shifted from your last assessment scores to which superior officers would be easiest to flirt with. Not exactly the most appropriate conversation, but hey, it should be expected of a group of twenty-something year-olds.
Jean suddenly snorts into his cup and says, āCaptain Levi is incapable of being flustered.ā
Connie barks out a laugh. āCaptain Levi? Yeah, no. I think if you flirted with him, heād just tell you your posture was shit.ā
āHe might blush if someone compliments his cleaning,ā Sasha says.
You laugh at the thought of Levi turning pink over you complimenting his polishing of the floorboards. Itās almost charming. But youāre pulled back into the reality of things quickly, reminded by the sure fact that Levi would be the type to make you run sixty laps for even breathing wrong in his direction. At least he would look irritatingly beautiful barking orders at you.
āMaybe he just needs someone hot to compliment him,ā Connie says.
Ymir, sitting beside Christa with one arm draped over her shoulders, rolls her eyes. āPlease. That man could walk through a brothel and find the mop sexier.ā
The table erupts into laughter. Armin drops his face into one hand, already checked out of the conversation. Christa turns scarlet but presses her lips together, very clearly trying not to laugh. Jean wheezes, and even Mikasa lets out a small, polite laugh. You shouldnāt laugh as hard as you do, because if Levi heard your conversation right now he would probably bury you all six feet under.
Then Eren, who has never met a stupid idea he couldnāt charge at headfirst, leans forward with bright eyes and says, āSomeone should test it.ā
You pause, nervously playing with the charm of your necklace. Jean is the first to look at you. Then Connie. Then Sasha. Then Ymir, a little more wickedly.
āNo,ā you say immediately, because you know that look, and you know yourself. āNo.ā
Jean grins. āCome on.ā
āAbsolutely not.ā
āYouāre the only one who could pull it off.ā
āI donāt know if I should be flattered or insulted.ā
āYou say things to the officers that none of us would ever say,ā Connie points out. It would be rude if it werenāt true.
āMaybe you could only do it for a week?ā Christa offers.
āA week?ā you echo, already feeling the dangerous little spark of interest light inside you. The worst part is that theyāre not entirely wrong; you are bold, you are blunt, and you have secretly spent far too much time wondering what it would take to make Levi Ackermanās perfect composure crack, even if only by a little. āYouāre giving me a week to flirt with humanityās most emotionally repressed man?ā
āGet a reaction,ā Jean corrects.
āDefine reaction,ā Armin says.
āBlushing counts,ā Eren says.
āStammering counts,ā Jean adds.
āLooking away counts,ā Christa says.
āNo it doesnāt,ā Ymir scoffs. āThat could just mean he hates you.ā
You cock your head. āTo be fair, I think he does hate me.ā
āHe hates everyone,ā Mikasa mumbles.
āWhat if he flirts back?ā Armin asks.
Eren scoffs loudly. āCaptain Levi? Flirt back? Be serious.ā
Your stomach twists at the thought. You canāt even imagine Levi doing anything as human as flirting. But what if he were to step a little too close, lower his voice to a smooth cadence, fix his eyes on yours and then your lips and then smash his mouth againstā
Nope. Youāre not going down that mental road again.
You set your spoon down and touch your necklace again. Everyone is watching you intensely. The best move here is to refuse. Itās the most sensible move. Captain Levi isnāt a toy for your entertainment. Making a game out of a man who can kill Titans like swatting flies is going to land you in deep shit. You know that.
And yet, you still smile. āA week?ā you ask, leaning back with a confident half-shrug. āGive me three days.ā
Jeanās grin widens. āThat confidence is exactly why we picked you.ā
Ymir snorts into her cup. āNo. We picked her because she has no sense of self-preservation. And sheās a fucking idiot.ā
The worst part is you canāt even argue with that. Game on.
.
Day one, you begin with too much confidence and nowhere near enough strategy, which, in hindsight, is probably the natural consequence of accepting a bet over dinner while surrounded by idiots.
You see Levi just after breakfast, walking through the corridor with a stack of reports in his arms. He looks somewhat more annoyed today, but because Eren and Jean are watching from around the far cornerānot very subtly, might you addāand because you refuse to lose your nerve on the first attempt, you slow your steps just enough to pass him shoulder-to-shoulder and say sweetly, āYou look good today, Captain.ā
Levi doesnāt stop or look at you. He doesnāt even blink in a way that could potentially be considered meaningful, unless youāre desperate enough to start seeing romantic symbolism in basic human functions now. He simply keeps walking, the scent of his soap trailing behind slapping you in the face. Youāre left standing there in the middle of the corridor with your mouth still curved into a smile. Meanwhile, at the end of the hall, Jean presses a fist to his mouth to stop himself from laughing and Eren mouths, Nothing?
Nothing. Not a twitch, not a glance, not even a disgusted little sigh. Fine, you think, watching Levi disappear around the corner. Eren and Jean shoot upright and pretend to engage in conversation, though itās horribly broken and awkward from what you can hear. The moment Leviās footsteps fade, Jean shoves Erenās shoulder, and Eren shoves him back.
First shot missed. Happens to the best of us.
.
By day two, you decide subtlety is the cowardās way.
You happen to run into Levi again in the supply closet. While youāre searching for a specific cleaner, the door opens behind you and he steps inside. Suddenly the cramped room seems to shrink even further. Thereās barely enough space for both of you to stand without brushing elbows. He doesnāt acknowledge the fact that youāre so close, naturally.Ā
Instead, he reaches past you for a rag on the shelf above your shoulder. He leans close enough that you can feel the warmth radiating off his body. Your muscles lock momentarily. Damn him for being so attractive. Still, you manage to tilt your chin up and say, āCareful, Captain. Any closer and people might start talking.ā
He pulls back and looks at you. For a second, you think youāll get something. A stammer, a blush if youāre lucky, but Levi only looks unimpressed. Itās the exact same look he gives soldiers when he manages to find a speck of dust after three straight hours of cleaning.
āPeople already talk,ā he says flatly. āUsually because you give them material.ā
You swallow a laugh. Damn him. You lean your shoulder against the shelf, trying not to focus on the fact that your pulse has just spiked dramatically. āOh, we can give them plenty of material.ā
Levi takes the rag, steps back, then leaves.
.
By day three, youāre beginning to suspect the bet is cursed.
Youāre gathered in the yard for ODM training. Your friends have formed a not-so-suspicious circle across the field. You see them gathered with a false innocence, sneaking glances at you, favoring the potential spectacle awaiting them over doing anything useful.
You check your gear and realize one of your straps at your thigh is loose, the buckle hanging awkwardly against your leg. Before you can crouch down to fix it yourself, someone approaches.
āHold still,ā Levi says.
Youāre almost embarrassed by how quickly you obey. He crouches in front of you and grabs the loose strap before you can object. Thereās nothing intimate about it, nothing that should make heat rush to your faceāand yet it does. You look down at his dark hair and the concentration on his face and think to yourself, this is fine. This is normal. Heās just fixing your gear. Youāre not going to die.
Then you remember the bet. Nowās your chance.
āYou always this good with your hands, Captain?ā you ask, nervously toying with your necklace.
Across the yard, Connie visibly folds in half. Eren grabs Mikasa by the sleeve. Sashaās mouth drops open. Levi tightens the buckle with one tug and looks up at you, his expression so blank itās almost hostile in a way.
āOnly when someoneās done a shit job and I have to fix it,ā he says.
You stare at him as he walks away, unaware of the others across the yard silently screaming into the void.
.
By day four, your pride is no longer bruised. Itās limping, bleeding, and asking whether anyone saw the driver of the carriage that hit it.Ā
Youāre cleaning one of the common rooms with a scrub brush in hand and a flicker of annoyance in your heart when Levi comes to inspect the progress. He steps inside, surveys the floor, the windowsill, the table legs, underneath the tables, and even the door handle.
āDo it over,ā he says.
You slowly turn your head toward him. āExcuse me?ā
His gaze flicks to the windowsill. āDust.ā
You look behind you at the window. Tragically, thereās dust. It wouldnāt matter to a normal person, but Captain Levi is far from normal when it comes to cleanliness. āYouāre very hard to impress, Captain,ā you say, forcing your voice to carry a teasing tone instead of something that makes it clear how badly you want to throw the rag at his head.
Levi looks at you, and he doesnāt look away. Standing under his intense gaze like this makes your stomach clench in ways you donāt even want to think about. āAnd youāre very easy to ignore.ā
Your smile twitches before you can stop it. That one stings a bit more. You know Levi isnāt above personal insults, but were you really that forgettable to him? You manage to muster up a bit more courage and say, āYou know, Iām more skilled in other areas.ā
Levi only quirks an eyebrow and tilts his head. That was enough to pull him in, it seems. Success. āHow so?ā
You smile, because finally, youāve found the opening. āYouāre not the only one whoās good with their hands.ā
Silence. Such deep silence that you could hear a pin drop. Levi holds your gaze for exactly one second before he says, almost bored, āKnock it off and get back to work.ā
And just like that, he moves on with his day, leaving you standing in the room with a rag in your hand, a burning face, and a grim realization that you may have underestimated both his composure and his commitment to making you feel like an idiot.
.
The moment you sit down at dinner that night, Connie leans across the table and hides his mouth from the view of the superiorsā table with his hand. āNothing?ā
You drop your head into your hand. āNothing.ā
āNot even a blink?ā
āHe has eyes, Connie. Heās going to blink,ā Mikasa says without looking up from her bowl.
Sasha groans and slumps dramatically over the table, one hand still clutching her apple. āWeāre doomed.ā
You groan too, louder. āNo, just me.ā
Jean makes a sympathetic noise thatās ruined completely by the fact that heās smiling. āYou still have three days left.ā
āThree days to accomplish the impossible,ā Eren mumbles.
Armin, kinder than the rest, tilts his head. āMaybe you need to adjust your approach.ā
āMy approach is fine,ā you say.
āYour approach is dogshit,ā Ymir says.
Christa gives you an almost apologetic smile, which makes you feel even worse. You stab at the softened carrots in your stew with one hand and toy with your necklace with the other. Every time you touch it, you remember your motherās hands in yours, the cold metal in your palm, her soft words wishing you safety and prosperity. You long to see her again. Soon, you think. Soon.
You force yourself to not look toward the officersā side of the hall, where Levi sits with Hange and Erwin, drinking tea without a care in the worldāas if he hasnāt spent the last four days ignoring your best efforts. It should be funny. It was funny, at first. But now his lack of a reaction has begun to get under your skin, turning challenge into irritation, then irritation into a feeling thatās far more embarrassing, because itās one thing for Levi to ignore the flirting and another thing entirely for him to make you feel like heās ignoring you.
Itās personal now, you decide.Ā
.
Levi thinks this is the most irritating week of his life, by far.
Itās not distracting enough to matter, and certainly not enough to affect his work, but itās definitely irritating. And persistent. You are persistent. Youāre always there. In hallways, in supply rooms, in the training grounds, always pushing and pushing, waiting for him to break at the seams.Ā
Levi doesnāt crack. Heās survived this long by being difficult to shake. Still, he thinks about itāabout youāmore than he should, and that annoys him the most.
Levi walks into the stables. Hay bales are stacked neatly against the wall. The tack is all lined up and organized in the storage room. Heās only searching for a harness clip, nothing more, because apparently grown soldiers canāt keep equipment where it belongs. He barely passes the first row of stalls before voices reach him from the far end. He recognizes them. Eren, Jean, Armin. Levi stops before they see him.Ā
āTold you,ā Eren says with a hint of smugness. āCaptain Levi doesnāt flirt.ā
Leviās brows shift by the smallest degree.Ā
āShe still has two days, Armin says, a little quieter. āAnd honestly, heās been looking at her more than usual.ā
āLooking annoyed doesnāt count,ā Jean laughs. āHe looks at everyone like that.ā
Levi freezes for a moment, then swallows. Then Eren speaks again, painfully unaware of the grave heās digging with both hands. āDoesnāt matter. The bet was to make him react. Sheās been flirting with him for five days and he hasnāt done anything.ā
Levi doesnāt know what to feel at first. Then annoyance practically slams into him. Of course the sudden compliments, the lingering looks, the suggestive comments delivered with too much confidence and nowhere near enough survival instinct are not lapses in judgement but a coordinated effort by the loudest collection of children to ever survive to adulthood.
He almost steps out. He almost makes them regret every syllable. He almost assigns all three of them stable duty until their hands smell permanently of horse shit. He almost leaves to go find you and drag you into his office and inform you that if you have enough free time to treat your commanding officer like a tavern dare, you have enough free time to scrub every inch of the barracks.
But he doesnāt. He remains where he is, half-shadowed beside the tack shelves, and thinks of you when you were in the supply closet with him, your chin tipped up and your mouth spilling smooth words you clearly expected to land, of the flash of irritation in your eyes when he refused to give you anything back.
So, youāve been trying to break him in front of an audience. Bold. Stupid. And mildly interesting. You want a reaction from him. No. More than that. You want proof that he can be moved, that thereās something you can reach underneath all the discipline and deadpan remarks if youāre reckless enough to keep trying.
Fine. Letās see how well you handle it when he stops being polite.
He turns without a sound, leaving the missing clip for someone else to find and the three idiots still talking at the far end of the stable, none of them aware that the terms of the bet have just changed.
Two days then. If you wanted a reaction that badly, he could give you one.
.
Day six begins badly, which, considering the trajectory of the week so far, should not surprise you. The morning vanishes beneath papers and one disaster involving Connie dropping a crate of replacement gas canisters. Youāre on the last thin shred of your patience. By the time late afternoon rears its ugly head, youāre tired and hungry, having spent five days throwing stones at a wall. Youāre considering whether you should just run headfirst into it. But you canāt give up. That would be mortifying. Also Jean would never let you hear the end of it.Ā
So when you turn the corner into the east corridor and nearly collide with Levi himself, you decide the universe has not abandoned you entirely. He stops before you can hit him, and you catch yourself with one hand against the wall, your heart giving a stupid little kick as you look at him. He looks as he always does: composed, mouth set in a flat line, irritatingly clean despite the hour.Ā
Fine, you think, dragging your confidence up by the collar. One more time.
You let your smile come slowly, forgetting how the last few days have been consistent public humiliation. āI was starting to think you were avoiding me, Captain.ā
Normally, this is where he would keep walking. Normally, he would ignore you and tell you to find something useful to do. But Levi stops beside you, close enough that the corridor feels smaller, close enough that you can smell the last cup of tea he had still lingering on his lips. He turns his head, eyes meeting yours from the side. Your smile falters.
āWhy would I?ā he asks. Your breath hitchesāstupidly. The words themselves are nothing, barely a response, but itās the way he said them, in a way youāve never heard from him before, that makes the world stop for just a single second. Then his gaze drops, briefly, and he says, āYou wanted my attention, didnāt you?ā
You forget how to answer. Your mind produces absolutely nothing. You canāt find a single comeback or tease. You technically got him to react, and you should be celebrating, but you can only focus on the fact that Levi has just taken the same game youāve been playing all week and held it against your throat.
Before you can recover emotionally, he turns and walks away. Just like that.Ā
You remain there, your hand now nervously touching your charm necklace, staring at him while your heart nearly explodes out of your chest. The worst part isnāt that he answered, but that he answered like he knew exactly what it would do to you.
No. Absolutely not. This is not happening. You are the one flirting with him. Youāre the one with the bet, the plan, the reputation for saying things no one else dares to say, and Levi is supposed to be an immovable force. He is not supposed to look at you like that.Ā
And you are not supposed to feel this way in return.
.
Dinner approaches, and you almost manage to convince yourself that you imagined it.Ā
He was probably being sarcastic. Youāre tired and frustrated and maybe starvation has you seeing seduction where it doesnāt exist. Leviās voice is always low, his eyes are always intense, and your imagination just lost its grip because youāve spent too many days thinking about him.Ā
The mess hall doors open onto chaos. Everyone is trying to leave and enter at once. Soldiers are pressed shoulder-to-shoulder in the crowded corridor, laughter and complaints tangling with the clatter of dishes from inside. Youāre caught near the doorway, half-turned as Jean calls to you from the table and Mikasa waves to you.
You start to step aside when you feel a hand settle at the small of your back. Levi moves behind you, close enough that his chest nearly brushes your shoulder as he guides you smoothly out of the flow of traffic. His palm rests low on your back for a moment longer than necessary. Your lungs practically stop working.
āYouāre in the way,ā he says.Ā
You turn your head, because apparently youāre feeling particularly self-destructive tonight and want to look directly at the weapon killing you. You find him already watching you. Your mind tells you to take the mercy of silence and leave with whatever remains of your dignity.
But because your survival instincts are apparently the worst and will always lose to your mouth, you say, āYou always touch your subordinates like that?ā
His hand slips from your back, his eyes holding yours as he answers, low enough that the noise swallows it before anyone else can hear. āYou always like getting touched by your superiors, or is it just me?ā
Your mouth parts. Nothing comes out. Leviās eyes flick, very briefly, to your lips, then he steps around you and walks into the mess hall like he didnāt just completely make you short circuit. You stand there in the doorway, heat rushing to your face so fast it nearly makes you dizzy. You reach up to touch your necklace again. You still feel the burn of his palm against your back.
No, no, no. That did not happen. Captain Levi did not just say that to you in a crowded hallway. Captain Levi, who has spent five days ignoring your every attempt to flirt, did not just choose now, now, in front of the open mess hall doors where your idiot friends are sitting within view, to say that.
You turn slowly toward the dining hall. At the table, every single one of them is staring. Eren has a spoon halfway to his mouth. Mikasa is watching you calmly, as she always does. Ymir is smiling widely. Jeanās eyebrows are raised to his hairline. You walk to the table on stumbling legs and sit down shakily.
Jean speaks first. āWell?ā
You reach to pick up your spoon, then you realize there is no spoon. You havenāt even gotten your food yet. āW-what?ā
āWhat happened?ā Connie demands. āWe saw him stop.ā
āDid he react?ā Eren asks. āDid he blush? Stammer? Look away?ā
āNothing happened,ā you say a little too quickly.
Armin tilts his head. āNothing?ā
āNothing,ā you repeat, trying not to spontaneously combust from the inside out.
Eren squints at you. āWhy do you look like you just ran thirty laps?ā
āBecause I hate all of you.ā
Sasha gasps softly. āEven me?ā
āEspecially you,ā you joke.
āOh, come on. Something happened,ā Jean laughs.
āNothing happened.ā
āYouāre flustered,ā Christa says gently. Damn it, of course it had to be her who noticed.
āItās hot in here.ā
āItās winter,ā Mikasa says. You glare at her.
Ymir leans forward, elbows on the table as she rests her chin on her linked hands. āOh, something definitely happened.ā
āIt didnāt,ā you insist, even though your skin is still burning where his hand touched your back.Ā
The bet was supposed to be simple. You flirt. Levi refuses to react. You keep pushing until you either win through charm or lose with enough grace to pretend you never cared. At no point was he supposed to turn around and make you feel like the bet had never belonged to you at all.
You stand up and grab your food, your cheeks still hot and shoulders stiff. When you sit back down, Ymirās gaze follows you. She knows. She absolutely knows. But you tell yourself again that nothing happened as you stab a potato hard enough that it breaks apart in your bowl.
Nothing happened. And if thatās true, then youāre in far more trouble than you thought, because apparently Levi can do absolutely nothing and still ruin you.
.
Itās the final day. The day you either make Captain Levi blush, stammer, or lose composure, or you lose the bet and spend the rest of your lifeāhowever short that may beālistening to Eren and Jean taunting you and becoming the most smug humans to ever exist on this earth. Youāre much less confident than you were when you started, and truthfully, youāre ready to take the loss and humiliation.
The training yard is blue with the early morning, fog clinging low to the ground while the first soldiers trickle in with their gear half-fastened and their faces pinched against the chill. You stand near the equipment racks with your ODM harness hanging around your hips. Your fingers feel slightly clumsier than usual as you tighten the buckle at your waist. Itās not that youāre nervous. Youāre just tired and cold. Youāre aware that Levi has spent the last twenty-four hours looking at you as if he knows something you donāt, touching you where he doesnāt need to touch you, speaking in a voice that, franky, should be illegal, and then walking away like nothing ever happened.
You tug the buckle too hard and it nearly pulls the breath out of you. Then it falls loose, and you mutter a low, āShit.ā
You feel someone move behind you. Your heart reacts before the rest of you does.
āYour waist buckle is loose.ā
You close your eyes for a brief second. Damn the universe for sending him. If youāre going to lose, you might as well go out strong. āIāve got it,ā you say.
āYou donāt,ā Levi says.
Before you can argue, he steps in behind you. His hands rise to your waist, grabbing the buckle you were fumbling with, and your spine straightens so fast you might as well have been pulled up by a wire. Heās so damn close. Too damn close.Ā
There are people in the yard. Not many, but enough. Enough that you canāt turn around and ask him what the hell he thinks heās doing, enough that you canāt grab his wrist, enough that you canāt do anything except stand there and pretend him correcting your gear isnāt an act of psychological warfare.Ā
His voice lowers near your ear. āYouāre distracted.ā
āIām not,ā you say a little too fast.
Levi pulls the buckle tight, enough to force a little āmmphā out of you. You swear you hear him scoff in amusement. āYou are.ā
āIām perfectly focused.ā
āYouāre slower.ā His knuckles brush, barely, against your stomach as he tightens the leather. āYour breathingās off.ā
As if your body is eager to prove him right, your breath hitches. You hate him. You hate him so much you want to bite him. You angle your head just enough to speak over your shoulder. āDid you come over here to critique my breathing?ā
āNo.ā He leans in just enough that his next words touch the edge of your ear. āIām wondering whatās on your mind.ā Your first name falls from his lips. You despise how much you like to hear him say it.
Your brain, which has faced Titans, blood, death, and the endless exhaustion of military life, simply abandons you. āIānothing,ā you say, the word catching in your throat.Ā
Levi freezes for a breath, then finishes buckling your gear. He withdraws his hands, but he doesnāt step back immediately. The absence of his touch feels somehow worse than the touch itself.Ā
āSave your filthy little thoughts about me for later,ā he says.
You freeze. Thereās no possible response. Nothing clever nor dignified. Nothing that doesnāt immediately reveal your thoughts, filthy or otherwise. But you realize theyāve already been dragged into broad daylight and inspected by the one man you least want to have that power.
Levi steps around you casually with a perfectly neutral expression, acting as if he hasnāt taken your last functioning nerve between his teeth and smiled around it. You stand there, frozen, your entire body burning.Ā
Maybe this bet was a bad idea.
.
By midday, youāre coming to terms with the fact that youāre no longer trying to win the bet. Youāre just trying to survive the damn thing.
The realization comes to you somewhere between drills and the deeply inconvenient moment when Sasha asks why you keep looking like you expect someone to sneak up on you. Because thatās exactly what it feels like right now; like every corridor has become a battlefield and every corner might contain Levi with another clever line ready to slide under your skin and make its home there.
Heās only doing this because he knows, somehow, because heās figured out the bet or sensed weakness or simply decides that torturing you is a productive use of his time. Thatās what you try to tell yourself, anyway. But none of those explanations quell the heat in your stomach. None of them make you stop remembering the low cadence of his voice. None of them help when you take the stairwell after grabbing a stack of reports to deliver and find him descending from the floor above, eyes already fixed on you as if he knew exactly where you would be.
Your first instinct is to step aside. Your second is to flee. Your third, which is unfortunately the one you choose, is to fight.Ā
Levi reaches the landing and moves as if to pass you, not stopping, not granting you so much as the satisfaction of another look, and you feel your pride explode in your chest. This is reckless, but when have you ever not been reckless? It led you here, after all.
āIf I didnāt know better, Captain, Iād think you were coming onto me,ā you say.
Levi stops. Slowly, he turns. His face is unreadable, but his eyes are not empty. They are darkened, focused purely on you and filled with so much control it feels more dangerous than if he had simply smiled.
āYouād know if I were coming onto you,ā he says.
A warning. A door. A line on the floor with your toes already over it. Leave it alone. Let him go. Remember that there are only a few hours left in this ridiculous bet and the safest thing in the world would be to stop poking at the man whoās already proven he knows exactly how to make you forget your own name without even touching you.
Stupidly, you say, āWould I?ā
For a moment, nothing happensāthen Levi steps closer. A single step that takes the distance between you and closes it. His boots echo quietly against the stone. Your back doesnāt touch the wall yet, but every part of you understands that it could. He leans in and you go still. Itās just enough room to move away. But you donāt. His breath brushes your ear as he speaks.
āYouād know,ā he says, voice so low the words barely survive the air between you, ābecause Iād have you backed against this wall and make damn sure you remembered who you were teasing.ā
You swear you feel your knees give out. Thereās no other way to describe it. A part of you dips, a violent little swoop of heat and shock and want that leaves your fingers tightening around the reports until the papers bend.
Levi draws back just enough to look at you, almost patiently, able to see every ruined thought passing across your faceāand he has all the time in the world to watch you suffer through them. You force your mouth open, but nothing coherent arrives. His gaze drops once to your hands clenched around the reports, then he steps past you, the sleeve of his jacket brushing your arm.
You nearly pass out when his footsteps finally fade away.
.
Hours later, after dinner, you and your friends gather in the yard, warm with lantern light and the fading noise of the day. The sky above the barracks deepens into a royal blue. You sit on the grass with your friends, trying to look as normal as possible and most likely miserably failing.
The bet is nearly over. Youāve technically won it, but for some reason, you donāt want to admit it, because if you do, the things Levi said and did become real. Still, you donāt tell them anything. Connie is looking at the stars, Sasha is finishing the last of her crackers that she snuck out of the mess hall, Jean is laying down with his hands behind his head, Mikasa is watching the yard, and Ymir keeps glancing at you with an expression that suggests she knows thereās blood in the water and sheās simply waiting for you to admit youāve been bitten.
Eren is the one who finally breaks. He waits until the last bell rings from somewhere inside the barracks, marking the end of the day. He smiles and looks at you so smugly it makes you want to slap him.
āThatās it,ā he says. āTold you. Captain Levi doesnāt give a shit about romance.ā
The others groan, laugh, and argue, immediately debating technicalities, because Jean insists there may still be time if Levi walks through the yard in the next thirty seconds, and Connie says you should just sprint inside and say something ridiculous in case it works.Ā
You hear it all from very far away, because you know with certainty that Levi didnāt blush, nor stammer, nor look away. He didnāt lose. Not where anyone could see, at least. Eren is right. Jean is right. Everyone is right.Ā
But they donāt know about the corridor, about his hand at your back, about the training yard and the filthy little thoughts he somehow spoke into existence just by naming them; they donāt know about the stairwell, about the way his voice lowered just for you, about the wall that never touched your back but has been haunting you for hours anyway.
You sit there in the grass with your face turned toward the darkening yard, letting the others mourn and gloat around you, while the memory of his words presses insistently at the forefront of your mind.
Youād know.
You press your lips together and say nothing, because the truth is yours nowāand Leviās.
And that might be worse than losing.
.
Several days pass, and in that time, Levi Ackerman becomes a ghost. Heās somehow everywhere and nowhere at once. In the courtyard while youāre sharpening your blades, standing at the edge of the formation while you run drills, passing through the dining hall with a cup of tea in one hand; and every time you see him, every time his eyes flick over you, your mind drags itself to the stairwell again.Ā
You try to be normal about it. Privately, you fail, but in public, youāre a master of composureāor at least thatās what you tell yourself every time you miss a cue or spend a full three seconds staring at Leviās mouth during morning briefing. You spend too long trying not to think about him, and the act of thinking about him suddenly becomes the only thing you know how to do.
Then the summons comes, delivered after dinner by a junior soldier, who says, with a nervous little glance over his shoulder, that Captain Levi wants to see you in his office.
āDid he say why?ā you ask.
The soldier clears his throat. āPerformance issues.ā
The others at the table look at you with a mix of confusion and pity, but you donāt look back at them. You simply stand, smooth down your jacket, and walk out of the dining hall while desperately trying to ignore the fact that your heart is about to explode.
Outside Leviās office, you lift your hand to knock, but you pause when you become aware of the warmth gathering underneath your collar. This is ridiculous. Youāre a soldier. Youāve faced Titans. Youāve bled, trained, survived, laughed in the face of exhaustion, taken orders from men twice as loud and half as terrifying, and you are not going to break down just because Levi asked to speak with you behind a closed door.
You knock.
āCome in.ā
You open the door. Leviās office is exactly as it always is; painfully neat, the shelves orderly and every stack of papers aligned neatly. A single lantern burns on his desk, where he sits with a report open in front of him and a cup of tea sitting near his right hand. He doesnāt look up immediately, and it makes the knot in your stomach tighten.
āYou wanted to see me, Captain?ā you ask, stepping inside and closing the door behind you.
Levi lifts his eyes and says, āSit.ā
Your spine reacts to the order first as you enter the room and sit in the chair opposite his desk with as much grace as you can muster, which isnāt a lot under the circumstances.
āAm I in trouble?ā you ask.
Levi leans back slightly, his fingers resting against the edge of the report. He studies you carefully. āDepends how honest you plan on being.ā You smile despite the cold chill running down your spine. He narrows his eyes at you. āYour focus has been shit.ā
Well. Not the line you expected, maybe, but the tone is familiar enough to turn into irritation, and youād rather deal with irritation than the other feeling gathering in your stomach.
āMy focus is fine,ā you say, more meekly than youād like.
āNo, it isnāt.ā Levi closes the report. āYour turns were wide during drills yesterday. Your reaction time was slow this morning. You checked your gear and didnāt realize your gas pressure regulation valve was broken.ā
Your lips part, then close again. Damn him. āThat was one mistake.ā
āSeveral mistakes.ā
āI was tired.ā
āYouāve been tired before. Youāre sloppier when youāre distracted. And youāve been distracted.ā
Heat starts rushing to your face. āIs that what this is about? My form?ā
āItās about performance issues.ā
Your body locks up. Leviās expression doesnāt change, and thatās the worst part, because his face remains perfectly neutral while the words crawl under your skin, dragging every memory of the last two weeks with them. His hand at your lower back, his voice at your ear, his proximity in the stairwell, his near-command to save your filthy thoughts for later. You try to breathe through your nose.
āMy performance is fine,ā you say.
āItās shit,ā he says.
You grip the arms of the chair a bit tighter. āDid you just call me in here to insult me?ā
āNo.ā
āThen what?ā
Levi sits in the silence for a moment, then he says, āNext time you make a bet involving me, pick a group of idiots that wonāt talk about it loudly.ā
You swear your stomach drops so fast that the whole room spins around you. Your vision blurs and your mind scrambles backward through every report, every hallway attempt, every bold little comment youād thrown at him. He knew. Levi knew.
You stare at him, completely frozen, shame flooding through you before anger surges to meet it. Not only did he know, but he had let you keep going, watched you struggle, and taken the game from your hands and turned it against you.
āYou knew?ā you say.
āSince day five.ā
Your face burns. The air in the office suddenly feels suffocating. āAnd you just let me keep going?ā
You swear you see Leviās eyes glint with amusement. āNo. I started playing.ā
You stand suddenly, chair scraping back against the floor loudly. āThat was petty, Captain. Were you trying to embarrass me?ā
āYouāre the one who was trying to make me blush in front of half the regiment.ā
You open your mouth, but nothing comes out, because heās infuriatingly, humiliatingly right, and he knows it. āThat was different,ā you say weakly.
āHow?ā
āIt was a bet.ā
āMm.ā Levi steps out from behind the desk. āThat makes it better?ā
You hold your ground as he rounds the desk, though you become increasingly aware of the closed door, his desk behind you as you turn around, how his shoes make almost no sound against the floor. Your pulse skips.
āIt was harmless,ā you say.
āIt was stupid.ā
āYou didnāt seem to mind.ā
His eyes lock onto yours. āNo. I didnāt.ā
Your back suddenly meets the edge of the desk. You hadnāt even realized you were stepping back. Levi doesnāt touch you, but he steps close enough that the space between you becomes a silent dare, and when his hands come down on either side of you, palms braced against the desk, youāre caged without being held. Trapped only because neither of you has chosen to move.
Heās left you room to step away. You could step away. But heās so close. Heās close enough that you can see the shadows beneath his eyes and the faint scar above his eyebrow. Your breath thins. Leviās gaze sharpens on you.
āYouāre very bold when thereās an audience,ā he murmurs.
You swallow, but your throat feels dry. āAnd when there isnāt?ā
For the first time, something almost like a smile threatens the corner of his mouth. He cocks his head slightly. āThatās what I called you here to find out.ā
The office goes silent. It presses around you, filling the space between your faces, making you conscious of every small thing surrounding you: the desk biting into your thighs, the faint scent of tea gone cold, the lantern flame shifting in its glass, Leviās hands braced on either side of you, close enough that your own fingers could reach his wrists if you dared.
Your anger is still there, and your embarrassment too, but beneath both, beneath the humiliation of being caught and the fury of being played, something else opens its eyes, a recklessness thatās starving for touch. Itās been alive since the corridor, since the stairwell, since the first time Levi turned the game back on you.
His gaze drops to your mouth. Yours drops to his. Neither of you moves. You can hear your heartbeat thundering in your ears now, unsteady despite your best efforts to calm it. Your hands grip the desk behind you. The urge to say something snarky leaps to your lips, but you have nothing. Youāre completely, utterly speechless.
But you feel the smallest flare of courage. And with that courage, youāre able to whisper three simple words.
āI dare you.ā
The kiss is nowhere near gentle. Itās controlled for a single second, just a firm press of his mouth against yours, like heās giving you exactly one moment to pull away; and when you donāt move, when your hands leave the desk to grab his cravat and pull him deeper in, his restraint breaks. He kisses you like heās been waiting for this, like heās been counting every reckless word you threw at him and has finally decided to answer all of them at once.
Your legs press into the desk as his body leans in, one hand leaving the wood to rest on your waist, the other sliding to your jaw. You make a small sound against his mouth that you would absolutely deny under oath, but Levi hears it, feels it, and answers by tilting your head exactly how he wants it. Your thoughts turn into complete static, but only one breaks through.
This is the reaction you wanted. Not a blush or a stammer. This.
Levi pulls away to breathe, his mouth still close enough to brush yours. His hand is still firm at your waist. You donāt speak, and neither does he. You notice the darkening of his eyes. Yours are fixed on his mouth. Then his thumb moves along your jaw.
āYou wanted honest,ā he says quietly.
You smile against his mouth and whisper, āI wanted a reaction.ā
Levi scoffs. āYou got one.ā
His mouth crashes back into yours, tongue sliding against yours. One of his hands fists in the fabric at your lower back, pulling you against him. The other cups the nape of your neck, holding you exactly where he wants you. You feel the way his breath hitches once before he deepens the kiss even further. Heās done waiting.
He tears his mouth away again, voice low and rough. āBedroom.ā
āIs that an order, Captain?ā you tease.
Leviās mouth twitches into something almost resembling a smirk. āItās an invitation. Donāt confuse the two.ā
His fingers lace through yours and he leads you out of the office, down the short hallway to his private quarters. The door shuts behind you, and then heās on you again, mouth hungry, hands already working at your straps. You push his cravat aside and unbutton his shirt with equal urgency. Every brush of his hands against your skin sends sparks racing through you.Ā
You reach up to your neck and unclasp your necklace, setting it carefully on the small table beside his bed. Youāve never taken it off, so the absence doesnāt register at first. When it does, you feel more naked, despite already fully being so. Then you turn back to him. Levi watches the movement, then his hands return to your bare waist, guiding you backward until the edge of the mattress meets the backs of your knees. He gives you the gentlest push and you sink onto the bed, the sheets cold against your skin.
Levi follows you down, bracing on one forearm as he kisses you again. His free hand trails along your side, mapping the curve of your waist, the flare of your hip. He breaks the kiss to move lower, pressing his mouth to the hollow of your throat, then the slope of your collarbone, then lower still.Ā
When his lips close over once nipple you arch, a soft sound escapes you. He sucks gently at first, then with more pressure, tongue circling the sensitive bud while his thumb teases the other. The dual attention makes your walls flutter around nothing. You thread your fingers through his hair, feeling the satisfaction that rolls through him at every gasp you give.
He continues downward, kissing a path over your stomach and your hipbone. He bites gently, leaving a whisper of a mark. His hands part your thighs and then suddenly, without warning, his mouth is on you, tongue stroking slowly. At the same time two fingers slide inside, curling so perfectly that your vision blurs for a moment.
Leviās thoughts are focused on only one thing: he wants to feel you come apart, wants to hear every sound you make when thereās no audience left to perform for. He works you steadily, tongue flicking and sucking at your clit while his fingers stroke that perfect spot again and again.
Your own thoughts scatter now. The bet feels distant, ridiculous compared to the reality of Leviās mouth and hands. Pleasure builds fast, coiling tighter with every pass of his tongue and every thrust of his fingers. Your hips move without conscious thought, chasing the sensation. Leviās free hand presses your thighs wider, keeping you open for him. The quiet growl he lets out against you vibrates through your core. Your inner walls clench around him, urging him deeper.
āLevi, please,ā you whimper, hands tangling in his hair as you grind against his face. āNeed more.ā
With a low chuckle, he adds a third finger, stretching you deliciously as he picks up the pace. His tongue dances over your clit, sending a wave of ecstasy through you. He doubles his efforts, sucking your clit into his mouth and flicking it with his tongue. Your thighs close around his head. One hand flies from his head to the sheets, gripping tight.
In a moment of surprising tenderness, he reaches out for your hand with his free one, lacing your fingers together. His other hand is still preoccupied, fingers thrusting deep and curling against your g-spot. The tension inside you winds tighter and tighter. Your quiet moans fill the room, a symphony of pleasure that seems to drive Levi on.
Your orgasm comes so suddenly it catches you by surprise. Your body clenches around his fingers as wave after wave rolls through you. You cry out, back arching off the bed, your hand in his hair tightening its grip on his locks. Levi doesnāt stop until the tremors ease, drawing every last ripple of pleasure from you with careful strokes of his tongue. When he finally lifts his head, his eyes are dark and intent, lips glistening. He kisses the inside of your thigh once, then moves back up your body to press his mouth to yours.
Your heavy breaths turn into small, hitched inhales as your pulse races. Leviās weight settles partly over you, one hand stroking your side. You feel his cock twitch against you. You reach for him, pulling him closer, and he comes willingly, his chest pressed against yours as he grinds his hips down to meet yours, his length sliding over your wetness.Ā
He then pulls back, eyes searching your face. Thereās a softness in the way he lifts his hand and brushes his thumb across your cheek. He feels the rapid flutter of your heart through your chest. Heās been denying it for days now, but heās wanted this. He wanted it since the first time you tried to make him react, but he needs to know you do too.
āAre you sure about this?ā he asks.
You nod without hesitation. āYes.ā
Levi watches you for another second, looking for any signs of doubt, then he settles between your thighs. His hand guides himself to your entrance, and the first press of him stretches you in a way you never could have prepared for. Heās thicker than you expected, the tip parting you slowly. The sensation is overwhelming at first. You feel every inch as he sinks deeper. Your body yields around his solid girth. A quiet sound escapes you, half gasp and half moan. Levi stills once heās fully inside you, giving you time to adjust.
He takes both of your hands in his and lifts them above your head, pinning them gently to the mattress. His fingers are laced through yours. He begins to move, slow rolling thrusts that you feel the full stretch each time he pushes in. The push of him inside you is deep, hitting places that make your toes curl.
Sensations layer one over another: the slickness, the pressure against your inner walls, your hips tilting to take him deeper. He lowers his mouth to your neck, lips brushing first. Then his teeth graze in a light bite, the sensation racing down your spine. You feel the sting melt into heat, and he soothes it with a slow kiss before biting again, a little harder this time.
Against your skin he murmurs, āYou feel so good.āĀ
The words spread through you in a rush of heat. He shifts your hands and grips both of them with just one of his, while he slides his now free hand down to grip your hip, steadying you as he thrusts again, deeper. You kiss him when he lifts his head, mouths meeting in an open exchange that still tastes faintly of you. He pulls back enough to speak, still moving inside you with long strokes.Ā
āIs this what you wanted?ā
You nod, a moan threading through the motion, your body arching to meet each thrust. The stretch is constant, a fullness that blanks your mind. Levi feels the way you clench around him and the small tremors in your thighs. He slows deliberately, hips rolling in a lazy pace that keeps him buried deep but denies the hard friction youāre starting to crave.
āYeah?ā he says, tilting his head. āWouldnāt like it if I stopped now, would you?ā
You shake your head, no words yet, just the desperate cling of your legs wrapping tighter around his waist. Your hands flex under his hold. You feel the strength in his grip. You couldnāt break free if you tried, and somehow, the contrast of tenderness and control makes heat flood through you again.
Leviās mouth curves slightly. āThatās right. You want me to keep going, pretty girl?ā He leans down, his lips barely ghosting over yours. āCome on, use your words.ā
You nearly crack under the weight of his words. Your voice comes out breathy and urgent. āPlease donāt stop. Keep going, Levi. I need it. Need it harder.ā
He obliges without hesitation. His pace shifts, thrusts growing harder, the bed creaking softly beneath you as he drives in with more force. His thickness fills you completely with each stroke. The wet sound of it mixes with the quiet moans he lets out against your neck. He bites there again, teeth sinking just enough to mark without breaking skin. He kisses the spot, tongue soothing the sting.Ā
A rush of emotion floods you through the physicality of it all, a mix of being wanted so thoroughly and the unexpected gentleness in how he holds you even while fucking you harder. The moment Levi releases your hand to brace himself properly, you drag your nails down his back, the urge to mark him back rising. The scratches start light but deepen with the next thrust. Leviās voice comes low near your ear.
āNot too hard, love.ā
You nod quickly, the word settling somewhere low in your stomach. You know why he said that. Marks like that would be impossible to hide in the showers. Questions would rise. Explanations you couldnāt give. You ease the pressure of your nails, letting your hands smooth over his skin instead. You feel the flex of his muscles beneath.Ā
Levi doesnāt falter, his hips snapping down in a rhythm that pushes you higher again. He kisses you to muffle the louder moans that slip out of you, his mouth claiming yours while he drives deep. The tip of him brushes your cervix with every stroke. You feel the tension coiling in him, the way his breathing grows rougher, the subtle tremor in his arms holding his body up. His own pleasure builds, the quiet sounds he makes rising in volume, murmured words of how perfect you feel around him, how much heās thought about this.Ā
The pace stays relentless, but he still holds enough control that he doesnāt get lost in the haze. You cling to him with your legs. He kisses your neck again. You feel the precipice approaching for him, the way his thrusts grow slightly erratic, his quiet moans turning into messier, louder groans.
When he pulls out at the last moment, itās with a low moan, and he shoots ropes across your stomach. The sight of it, the claim on your skin, the way his body shudders through his release, almost makes you cum again on the spot.Ā
Levi stays close afterward, breathing hard, his forehead resting against yours for a moment. He kisses you gently, fingers stroking over your wrists where he held them before to check without words that youāre alright. You nod silently. He suddenly stands on slightly shaking legs and crosses the room to retrieve a cloth. He sits beside you and wipes you carefully before lying beside you, one arm draped over your waist.Ā
You turn into him, closing your eyes, not worrying about what the morning will bring. Right now, itās just you and him, and the very distant thought that youāll have to thank the others for throwing you into this bet.
.
The morning after is painfully awkward.
Surely, you can survive sitting down with your friends after spending the night with Levi. Surely. Probably. Maybe, if no one looks at you too closely.
You slide onto the bench beside Sasha, trying not to remember Leviās hands on your waist, Levi speaking against your lips, Leviās breath finally turning uneven in the dark when your fingers dragged through his hair and pulled a rough sound from his throat that absolutely would have counted as a reaction if the rest of these idiots had been there to witness it.
Then again, fucking your captain probably counts as a reaction too.
Sasha looks up from her breakfast. āYouāre late.ā
āI slept in,ā you answer smoothly.
Ymir, sitting across from you with Christa close at her side, narrows her eyes immediately. āDid you?ā
āYes.ā
āThat sounded defensive.ā
āThatās because Iām being attacked before Iāve had tea.ā
Jean and Connie snicker. Then Connie sighs and shakes his head, saying with genuine disappointment, āI still canāt believe you couldnāt get the Captain to react. I was so sure you could do it.ā
Oh, you did it alright.Ā
āI did my best,ā you say.
Ymir props her chin on her hand and smiles lazily. āPlease. No one could ever make Levi blush or stammer. The whole thing was a waste of fucking time.ā She pauses, then adds, āA funny waste of time, though. That was pathetic.ā
Jean points his spoon at you without looking at you. āShe did get him to talk to her more than usual.ā
Armin suddenly says your name. All eyes turn to him. He tilts his head, eyes locked onto your throat. āWhereās your necklace?ā
Your hand goes to your throat and meets bare skin. Your heart drops through the floor, through the earth itself where it can lie down and die in peace. You know where it is. You know exactly where it is. But you cannot tell the truth, because you would absolutely never hear the end of it.
āI mustāve forgotten to put it on,ā you say, and immediately slap yourself in your mind because you have never forgotten to put on your necklace, because you never take it off except for showers.
Then you feel it on the hairs on the back of your neck. Someoneās approaching. But before you can turn around, a hand enters your vision and sets something down on the table in front of you. Oh gods, you know those hands. They were all over you last night.
You look up and your entire soul leaves your body.
āYou left this,ā Levi says.
You look down at what he set down. Itās your necklace. Right there, on the table, beside your hand. In front of everyone. No one speaks. No one breathes. You stare at the necklace and it feels like its staring back in disappointment at you.
Levi turns and walks away without another word. When you look up, every single head is turned to you. You look back down at the necklace, your face absolutely boiling with embarrassment and the memory of last night. Fuck, fuck, fuckā
āWhy did the Captain have your necklace?ā Connie asks.
You pick it up with slightly shaking fingers. āThat is⦠a great question.ā
Jean leans forward. āAnd?ā
āAnd Iām admiring how great it is.ā
Erenās eyes are now huge, both horrified and fascinated. āWait, did you manage to get him to react?ā
You look down at the necklace of your palm, remembering Leviās hands lacing through yours, his mouth lavishing attention on your neck, his body settled between your thighs, his praises and moans and whispersāall things you will be taking to your grave and beyond it.
Then you smile.
āYeah. Something like that.ā

Levi first sees you in the morning in the hallway outside of Erwinās office. Youāre holding a stack of reports tucked under one arm, your cloak clasped crookedly, and a half-finished piece of bread pinched between your teeth because you realized eating breakfast and walking to your briefing is an efficient way to multitask.
Levi sees you from the end of the hall and stops walking. His entire body locks up for the stupidest reasonābecause itās you. He immediately thinks There she is. Then, because his mind is determined to ruin him, it adds, Her hair looks nice. He almost turns around and walks directly back to his office just to avoid facing you, but because heās Captain Levi Ackerman, a man who has faced Titans without blinking and therefore shouldnāt be taken down by a woman holding paperwork and chewing bread, he keeps walking forward.
āYou look like hell,ā he says as soon as heās close enough.
You stop and look at him, taking the bread out of your mouth as you lift your brows. āGood morning to you too, Captain.ā
Levi stares at the bread, then your mouth. He tries to find something else to focus on. Maybe he can tell you your cloak clasp is twisted and Erwin will absolutely notice. Maybe he could ask whether you slept, because the shadows beneath your eyes look darker than yesterday, and yesterday they had already irritated him enough that he left a cup of tea outside your office and convinced himself he only did it because your exhausted handwriting was difficult to read.
āYou look better than yesterday, though,ā he adds, because he doesnāt know how to shut up around you.
You half-smile. āThat might be the closest youāve ever come to saying something nice to me.ā
He feels his stomach drop. Was it? Was that nice? Had he been too obvious? No. No, thatās impossible. No one could hear āyou look like hellā and think it was sweet unless they were deranged. But youāre not deranged. In fact, youāre too competent and too observant for his peace of mind.
āYouāre insane,ā he says, reaching forward before he can stop himself to fix your cloak clasp. The moment he brushes his fingers against your throat, he wishes the floor would swallow him whole.Ā
You freeze out of surprise, then lift your chin slightly as his knuckles graze the skin beneath your jaw. Leviās mind goes blank in the most humiliating way possible. He hears the scratch of your breath, feels your pulse at your neck, smells the soap you useābecause of course you would be the only other person with proper hygiene standardsāand everything heās learned in life to survive abandons him. He steps back as if youād burned him.
āThere,ā he says, voice flat. āTry dressing yourself like an officer next time.ā
You glance down at the straightened clasp, then back at him, amusement tugging at the corner of your mouth. āAre you always this charming before breakfast?ā
āNo.ā
āOnly with me, then?ā
He turns and walks away. Behind him, you laugh, and Levi immediately knows by the burning of his cheeks and the repeating Stupid, stupid, stupid in his mind that this is going to be a very long day.
He insults you again five minutes later inside Erwinās office, where Erwin stands at the head of the table. Hange lounges over a chair, looking as if theyāve only slept for either four hours or not at all. Miche stands near the window quietly, as always. You take the seat across from Levi, who keeps his eyes on the meeting notes. He refuses to look at you. If he does, he wonāt be able to stay composed.
āYouāre quiet,ā Hange says to him after Erwin begins explaining the revised training schedule for the week. āYouāre either listening or plotting something.ā
āUnlike you, I can do both quietly,ā Levi says.
Hange grins. āThatās what I admire about you, shorty!ā
You snort under your breath. Levi looks at you without meaning to. Youāre clearly trying not to smile, one hand pressed over the bottom half of your face, eyes lowered to the table. He sees it all, because he always sees too much where youāre concerned. Thatās the problem. It means he notices the loose strand of hair against your cheek, and the warmth in your eyes when you catch him looking at you. Levi looks away immediately, thinking to himself Idiot.
āSomething wrong, Levi?ā Erwin asks, quirking up an eyebrow.
āNo,ā Levi says.
āYou were staring into nothing.ā
āI was just assessing whether her paperwork is as sloppy as her uniform.ā
You mock an offended gasp. āMy paperwork is pristine.ā
āItās tolerable.ā
āFrom you,ā you say, pointing your quill at him, āthat is basically a marriage proposal.ā
Everyone in the room goes quiet. Hange inhales like theyāre about to burst. Levi goes completely and utterly still. Marriage proposal. You said it as a joke. Obviously, right? Itās just a harmless, casual joke, banter shared between squad leaders when too much paperwork has turned everyoneās brains into horse feed. Thereās no reason for his mind to take the phrase, drag it and him into an alley, and start beating him with it.
Marriage proposal. His mind races before he can stop himself, supplying a series of images: you standing at an altar, you and him in his office alone, your laughter at breakfast, your hand in his, your mouth on hisā
No. Heās not going there again. Not now.
Hangeās grin grows wider. Miche looks out the window, but his shoulders shake with silent laughter. Erwin, who is the worst kind of friend to you both, simply looks between the both of you, silently filing this moment away for later to use against either of you when the time comes.
Levi picks up his teacup. āYouād make a terrible wife,ā he says.
You grin and rest your chin on the top of your linked hands, elbows on the table. āWhyās that?ā
āYouāre loud, annoying, and you donāt even know how to chop a carrot.ā
āYou notice the strangest things about me.ā
Levi drinks his tea to avoid having to answer, and even though the tea is too hot, he refuses to cough. Unfortunately for him, you notice his eyes squinting slightly, and your smile softens so much it nearly kills him on the spot. No, he thinks. I canāt let her do this to me.
He spends the rest of the meeting saying as little as possible, which would work better if Hange didnāt keep sneaking glances at him with barely contained excitement.Ā
Levi expects the week to improve after that. It doesnāt. The problem is that youāre everywhere. Youāre in the training yard in the afternoon, walking between your squad members to correct their positions. Youāre at the stables in the evening, arguing with someone about your saddle in disrepair. Youāre at the mess hall the next morning, laughing with Nanaba over something silly, your head tipped back in a way that fully exposes your throat and immediately makes Levi think of how nice it would be to kiss it.
Itās nothing. Itās not attraction, itās not a crush, because heās a full-grown man and he has no use for romantic attraction. Itās just⦠a normal appreciation of competence. Itās nothing.
Then you bend to pick up a dropped training knife, showing off your ass perfectly, and Levi walks straight into a wall.
So, not nothing, then.
.
By the fifth day, heās found numerous excuses to pass through the training yardāat least three times.
The first time, he claims heās merely checking formations and whether the recruits are holding it correctly. The second time, he claims the training dummies arenāt being raised correctly. The third time, he says nothing at all because even he knows another excuse wonāt fool anyone.
You catch him near the fence line with his arms crossed, watching as you demonstrate a disarming technique to your squad. āCaptain Ackerman,ā you call, breathless from your exertion. āAre you here to criticize my form again?ā
His mind immediately says Yes, then No. Tell her she moves well. Tell her that her squad trusts her. Tell her she can command a room without having to do anything. Tell herā
āYour stance is less terrible than usual,ā Levi says. He slaps himself in his mind. Stupid.
You turn slowly. āLess terrible? Are you praising me?ā
āIt wasnāt praise.ā
āDefinitely sounded like praise,ā you sing.
āGet your hearing checked.ā
You grin. Levi looks away, biting the inside of his cheek. Your squad disperses after another hour, groaning with exhaustion, and you remain behind to gather the practice blades, humming under your breath while the wind blows through your hair.Ā
Levi knows he should leave. He has reports, he has inspections, he has an office to clean and tea waiting for him thatāll oversteep if he continues standing here like some lovesick idiot. He finds himself walking toward you anyway.
āYouāre wearing that wrong,ā he says.
You look down at yourself, squinting your eyes. āWearing what wrong?ā
āYour harness.ā
āNo, Iām not.ā
āYes, you are.ā
āIāve worn ODM gear for years.ā
āThen itās embarrassing that you managed to fuck it up this badly.ā
You put both hands on your hips, cocking your head at him. āAlright, then. Fix it if it bothers you that much.ā
His soul practically leaves his body, but because he has absolutely no self-preservation, he mutters, āFine.ā
He steps behind you and reaches for the strap crossing your back. Itās only slightly twisted, barely enough to matter, but he focuses on it as if the fate of the Walls depends on that strip of leather lying flat. Focusing on the strap is easier than focusing on how warm you are, how close you are, how you freeze when his hands settle at your waist to adjust the lower buckles.
This is normal, he thinks. Youāve adjusted soldiersā gear before. He pulls and tightens. Then, he finally realizes this is not normal at all. Heās too busy thinking about your waist. How nice it feels under his hands. How nice it would be to hold it while he presses up against you from behind. Goddamnit, get it together. He tightens one strap, loosens another, checks the angle, then checks it again because he canāt bring himself to pull away.
āYouāre awfully thorough,ā you say.
Levi freezes. He hears the smile in your voice. A small one. Possibly innocent. Probably innocent. He canāt lean forward and investigate, because if he sees your expression, he may just blurt something stupid out like I like standing this close to you, and then heāll have to desert the Scouts and live alone in a cave for the rest of his life.
āIf you fall out of your gear, Iāll have to hear about it,ā he says.
āAh, so this is precaution.ā
āObviously.ā
āYouāre very thoughtful.ā
āMore like annoyed.ā You laugh softly, and he finishes the adjustment too quickly, stepping away in an attempt to restore whatever part of his dignity just died. āThere,ā he says. āTry not to embarrass your rank.ā
You turn to face him, completely oblivious to the fact that heās just survived an internal war. āThank you, Levi.ā
He blinks at the use of his name. You usually donāt say his first name. Itās always Captain, Captain Ackerman, or Captain Levi. Never just Levi. He looks away before his expression can give him away.
All he says is a simple, āTch.ā
.
You still donāt realize that Levi thinks of you differently, even weeks later.
Levi is rude to almost everyone, blunt with everyone, sparse with praise and allergic to any kind of emotional displays, so it doesnāt occur to you immediately that the insults he gives you are not the same as the ones he gives everyone else. You just assume Levi tolerates you, perhaps even respects you. You donāt assume Levi watches for whether youāve eaten, or that heās memorized how you take your tea, or that he once spent ten minutes deciding whether he should knock on your door with medicine in his hand when you were out sick one day.
Hange assumes all of it, and unfortunately for you, Hange assumes very loudly.
In the mess hall, you sit alone at the end of one table with a bowl of stew, a cup of tea, and a stack of formation notes youāre trying to read without dripping broth on them. Even now, you donāt know how to stop working. Hange slides into the seat across from you so quickly that the table shifts. You look up, raising your brows.
āHello to you too,ā you say.
āYou and Levi,ā Hange says.
You pause with your spoon halfway to your mouth. āMe and Levi what?ā
āOh, donāt do that.ā
āDo what?ā
āPretend you havenāt noticed.ā
You stare at them, and Hange stares back, eyes bright behind their glasses, their expression so gleeful itās almost terrifying.
āHange,ā you say slowly. āI genuinely have no idea what youāre talking about.ā
Their smile falters, then returns even wider. āOh, thatās even better.ā
āWhy am I scared?ā
āYou should be. I know something.ā
āYou say that a lot.ā
Hange waves that away, then leans closer. āLevi has a crush on you.ā
You almost drop your spoon into your lap. Surely they must be joking, right? The words donāt even make sense at first. They enter your brain, bounce around for a few seconds, then immediately get rejected by every sensible part of you.
āLevi,ā you repeat.
āYes.ā
āCaptain Levi Ackerman.ā
āYes.ā
āHumanityās strongest soldier. That Levi.ā
āDo we have another emotionally stunted short man named Levi wandering around?ā
You look across the mess hall at Levi, standing near the far wall, speaking with Erwin. His arms are folded across his chest, face blank as always. Nothing about him suggests he has a crush on you. The man looks like he was born to disapprove of everyone and everything. To be fair, he already does.
āHe insulted my uniform,ā you say.
Hange leans even further in. āI saw him fix your cloak.ā
āHe told me my paperwork was tolerable.ā
āLevi considers tolerable high praise.ā
āHe said I would make a terrible wife.ā
āHe was totally thinking about you being his wife.ā You open your mouth, then close it, because you have absolutely nothing to say in response to that. Hange presses on with a devilish smile. āHe brings you tea, too,ā they say.
āSo?ā
āGood tea.ā That makes you pause. āHe corrects your supply forms before Erwin sees them.ā
āSo? He corrects everyoneās forms.ā
āNo, he writes āredo this garbageā on everyone elseās. Yours come back fixed.ā You can only blink in response. āHe always says something when your squad gets stable duty, and somehow those assignments always mysteriously change.ā
āThat could be Erwin.ā
āItās not Erwin, trust me.ā
āOkay, well⦠he criticized my gear.ā
āThat was only an excuse to touch you.ā
āHange.ā
āWhat? Iām observant.ā
You sneak a glance at Levi again, and as though sensing your gaze, he looks over. His eyes meet yours across the mess hall, and you see the smallest shift in his expression. A fondness you hadnāt seen before. He then notices Hange sitting across from you, sees the wide grin on their face, and he narrows his eyes with immediate suspicion. Hange waves. Levi looks like heās considering whether he could get away with murder. Then you noticeāand youāre entirely convinced youāre just seeing thingsāthe redness blooming across his cheekbones when he looks at you again.
Oh.
Oh?
That is, unfortunately, very cute.
Then you realize. It all hits you at once. The tea outside your office, the fixing of your cloak, the bread that mysteriously showed up on your desk, the fact that he somehow always manages to appear when youāre carrying something heavy, the way his insults land just a little softer when theyāre directed at you.
āYouāre enjoying this, you naughty thing,ā you accuse Hange.
āImmensely.ā
āIf youāre wrong, Iām going to look very stupid.ā
āIām not wrong.ā
āYouāve been wrong before.ā
āIām rarely wrong in matters this entertaining.ā
Across the room, Levi pushes away from the wall and starts walking toward you. You feel your stomach drop as Hange stands up.
āGood luck,ā they whisper.
You look to them in panic. āHange, donāt leaveāā
āBe gentle. Heās not emotionally housebroken.ā
They vanish before Levi arrives, leaving you sitting with your lukewarm stew, your scattered notes, and the sudden realization that Levi Ackerman has been crushing on you for who knows how long now?
Levi stops beside the table. āWhat did they say?ā he asks.
āNothing.ā
He narrows his eyes. āNothing usually means something.ā
āIt means nothing, actually.ā
āThatās somehow worse.ā
You look up at him and, for the first time, allow yourself to study him with the possibility of affection returned. He looks the same as always: tight mouth, sharp eyes, neat cravat, straight posture. But now you see the tiny tells beneath it. He doesnāt look at you directly for too long. His attention flicks to your tea, your food, your notes. His fingers twitch once at his side before he forces them to be still.
Heās nervous. Levi Ackerman is nervous.
You nearly break into a way-too-obvious smile, but thankfully, you manage to just tilt your head. āCaptain,ā you say, āare you worried about me?ā
āNo.ā
āWell, that was a quick answer.ā
āBecause it was an easy question.ā
āSo youāre not worried about me.ā
āNo.ā
āAnd if I skipped dinner?ā
His eyes flick to your bowl. āYouāre eating dinner.ā
āBut if I did.ā
āThen youād be an idiot.ā
āYouād notice, though.ā
Levi looks at you pointedly, and you smile. You see the visible tightening around his mouth and the subtle shift in his breathing.Ā
āHard not to notice when someone is being an idiot in public,ā he says.
You lean your chin into your hand. āYou know, if you wanted my attention so badly, you couldāve just asked for it.ā
You swear Levi stops breathing. You see the hitch in his breath. His face doesnāt change as much, but you see the subtle shift in his eyes, the catastrophic collapse happening behind them that heās so desperately trying to hide.
She knows, Levi thinks, then with rising horror, She knows, and Hange told her. Iām going to kill them. āI have better things to do than ask for your attention,ā he says, swallowing through the tightness in his throat.
āAnd yet, here you are,ā you say, smiling widely.
Because he doesnāt know where else to look, he peers at your notes. āYour handwriting is messy again.ā
āDeflection.ā
āMere observation.ā
āYou make a lot of those about me.ā
āSomeone has to.ā
You laugh. Levi wishes he didnāt love that sound as much as he does.
You become an absolute menace after that.Ā
.
You donāt do it immediatelyāyouāre too clever for that, and Levi is too slippery to corner. So, you start with small things, such as sitting beside him instead of across from him at the next briefing, which he notices immediately. He stiffens in response.
āMorning,ā you say cheerfully.
He looks at the empty chairs around the table. āThere are other seats.ā
āI like this one.ā
āItās too close.ā
āTo what?ā
āTo me, idiot.ā
You look at him innocently, batting your eyelashes. āAm I bothering you, Captain?ā
Yes, Levi thinks, because youāre too close that he can clearly smell your divine scent, and because your sleeve brushes his when you reach for a report, and because he can see the little crumb that you must not have fully swept away on your mouth and wants to stupidly wipe it off.
āNo,ā he says.
āGood.ā
Hange bites their knuckles across the table.
Later in the mess hall, you ask Levi to pass you a fork. The utensils are closer to you than to him. It doesnāt go over his head, but he reaches for it anyway, because heās embarrassingly obedient to you. When he hands it over, you deliberately brush your fingers over his. Levi nearly drops the fork. He doesnāt, thankfully, but he manages to keep his hand steady, even though internally, he wants to run face-first into a wall.Ā
You lower your voice. āCareful, Captain. You seem distracted.ā
He glares at you. āYouāre imagining things.ā
āOh, am I?ā
āYes.ā
āThat was also a very fast answer.ā
āYou ask stupid questions.ā
āAnd you still answer them anyway.ā
You catch his eyes flicking down to your mouth only once, only for the smallest amount of time, but you see it, and all traces of wanting to tease him escape your body.
For all your amusement, for all the fun of watching him unravel, youāre not immune to him. Leviās awkwardness is adorable, yes, and his insults are ridiculous as they are normal, but you know how to decipher the way he shows you attention. Heās always fiercely contained. Youād be lying if you said you didnāt want to crack that composure just a little.
After dinner, he follows you in the always-empty corridor outside the mess hall, the one just around the corner. He positions himself in front of you, standing near a window where the moonlight cuts across his face.
āYouāre doing this on purpose now,ā he says.
You stop walking. āDoing what?ā
āDonāt play dumb.ā
āIām not. I want to hear you say it.ā
He clenches his jaw. Thereās no one else in the corridor, so surely, he can say it with little repercussions, right? Levi looks at you, then shifts his gaze away.
āYouāve been acting strange,ā he says.
āIāve been acting strange?ā
āYes.ā
āThatās interesting.ā
āNo, itās just annoying.ā
You step a little closer, but Levi doesnāt move. āAm I making you uncomfortable?ā you ask softly.
āNo.ā
āNo?ā
āYouāre not making me uncomfortable.ā
āThen what am I making you?ā
His eyes meet yours, and for once, he doesnāt seem to have an insult resting on the tip of his tongue, ready to strike. The silence stretches for a moment longer than necessary.
āAnnoyed,ā he says finally, crossing his arms.
āOoh, thatās the answer youāre going with?ā
āItās the answer youāre getting.ā
āLevi.ā
His name again. You use it gently, and the effect it has on him is visible in the slight flare of his nostrils and his fingers flexing once against his sleeve.
āYou can tell me to stop,ā you say.
āI know.ā
āAnd?ā
āAnd I wonāt.ā Levi looks irritated by his own honesty, but he doesnāt retract. His gaze drops to your mouth, snaps back to your eyes, drops again before he can stop it, and this time both of you know. Both of you feel it. Both of you stop denying it. āI canāt think straight around you,ā he says very quietly. The words seem to surprise him as much as they surprise you.
Your smile melds into a softer one. āDo you want me to back off?ā
āNo.ā
You take another step closer. āDo you want me to keep teasing you?ā
Levi looks genuinely pained when he says, āYouāre enjoying this too much.ā
You shrug. āA little.ā
āBrat.ā
You raise your hand slowly, giving him enough time to move away if he so wishes, and you touch the edge of his cravat, feeling the fold beneath your fingers. He tracks the movement with his eyes as if your hand is a blade.
āDo you want to kiss me, Levi?ā you ask.
Leviās heart drops straight through the floor. There are many things he can do under pressure. He can make impossible decisions with blood on his hands. He can move faster than fear. He can face death with a blank expression. But thisāa direct question, so clear in its intent, asked in your soft voice while you stand close enough for him to count your eyelashesādestroys him completely.
But heās tired of losing to himself.
āYes,ā he says.
āThen whatās stopping you?ā you whisper.
He waits a second longer, just enough to make sure you donāt step back or retreat fully, just enough to give you the chance to change your mind. You donāt, so Levi kisses you.
At first, heās too careful, his mouth pressed against yours with restraint. It feels like heās holding back an army, one hand hovering near your waist before he places it there. You feel the tension coiled in him, the uncertainty buried inside him. Levi doesnāt kiss you with any sort of confidence. Heās scared. You can tell. So you help him. You step into him, sliding one hand to his shoulder and the other to the side of his face, and kiss him back hard enough that his breath leaves him in a startled exhale.
Then he changes. Some guarded place inside him finally lets down its walls as his hand grips your waist and his mouth moves against yours with deeper intention, having thought about this moment for longer than heāll ever admit. Every insult and cup of tea has been leading him here, to this corridor, to this moment, to the relief of wanting you and discovering that you want him too.
And goddamit, do you want him.
When you part, you stay close, your noses brushing, his hand still at your waist, having forgotten to let goāand when he remembers, he still doesnāt pull away. He notices your smile first.
āWhat?ā he asks.
āYouāre totally blushing.ā
āWhat? No Iām not.ā
āYou are.ā
āStop it.ā
āLevi Ackerman is blushing from one kiss?ā
āYou and your fucking ego.ā
You laugh, and he canāt help the small smile that creeps onto his lips. Then heās pulled back to exactly how you even got to this point, and his almost-smile curdles into a scowl.Ā
āDonāt flirt with me in front of Hange again,ā he says.
āWhy?ā
āBecause theyāll never shut up about it.ā
You tilt your head. āAnd?ā
Levi looks down the corridor once, then turns back to you. āAnd because Iāll probably embarrass myself,ā he almost mumbles.
āYou didnāt embarrass yourself,ā you say. He looks slightly skeptical. āLevi. I asked you if you wanted to kiss me and you said yes. That was actually very impressive.ā
āTch.ā
āFor you, I mean.ā
He narrows his eyes. You just laugh and kiss his cheek once before walking away with glee in your steps, leaving behind a very miserable, blushing Levi.
.
The days after your kiss are strange, for lack of a better word. You and him donāt announce anything to anyone else, which Levi appreciates, because if Hange finds out, heāll never know peace again. But privacy doesnāt mean mercyāyouāre too evil for that. Youāre gentle with him still, but youāre also you, and youāve realized very quickly that Leviās composure is a door with a faulty hinge.
You touch his hand in meetings. You call him Levi and sometimes Vi in passing and watch him stop as his face flushes red. You smile at him over your drinks and soup and bread in the mess hall. You tell him, after one long afternoon of reports, āYou know, youāre almost sweet when youāre pretending not to be.ā
He looks up from his paperwork and accidentally leaves a line of ink across the page. You stifle a laugh. Heās not going to be happy when he looks back down.Ā
āIām not sweet,ā he says.
āAlmost sweet.ā
āStill wrong.ā
āYou brought me tea yesterday unprompted.ā
āI always do. And you looked dead.ā
āAw, you noticed?ā
āHard to miss.ā
āBecause I looked pretty?ā
āBecause you looked dead.ā
āPretty dead?ā
He stares at you. You stare back. His mouth twitches first.
Another thing that fits into your long, exhausting days are the stolen kisses. A brief one in the narrow hall outside the records room. A longer, messier one in his office after you bring him corrected notes. One in the shadowed stairwell that ends with him muttering, āYouāre going to get us caught,ā even though heās the one who pulls you back by your wrist when you start to leave.
Every kiss teaches you something. Levi likes to pretend he isnāt affected by you, but heās always betrayed by his hands. They start almost formal, then grow bolder when you respond, fingers spreading along your waist, your back, the side of your neck. He doesnāt make much sound unless you surprise him, and once you realize that, you become silently determined to surprise him every chance you can get.
He learns too. He learns that you like when he says your name softly, in the low, rough voice he uses when heās too flustered to hide behind composure. He learns that you laugh into kisses when he deepens it out of nowhere. He learns that if he cups your jaw and tilts your face toward his, your breath catches so beautifully that it makes his heart flip.
One night, after a late strategy review, after Erwin dismisses the squad leaders and Hange leaves with an extremely pointed and suggestive look, Levi mutters, āWalk into a Titanās mouth,ā under his breath as soon as the door shuts and returns to his office. You join him because Levi still has your patrol notes. Itās just an excuseāboth of you know it.
Rain taps gently against the windows. Levi stands behind his desk with your papers in one hand while he scans the revised schedule. Meanwhile, you lean against the edge of a cabinet and try not to watch his Adamās apple bobbing as he swallows.
āYou changed the rotation,ā he says.
āMhm.ā
āItās better.ā
You raise your eyebrows. āWas that praise I just heard?ā
āObservation.ā
āA positive one.ā
āYouāre making it weird.āĀ
He looks up, but thereās a different look to his eyes, something worn down by days of wanting you and stopping and wanting you again. You feel your body answer, a warm pull in your lower stomach, the ache thatās been building every time he kisses you longer than you expect. Levi sees your expression shift, and he grips his papers tighter.Ā
āDonāt look at me like that,ā he says.
āLike what?ā
āLike youāre about to start trouble.ā
You push away from the cabinet slowly. āWould you like me to stop?ā
He hates that question with a passion. Every time you ask it, it matters. You give him enough space to refuse, to breathe, to get himself together, and it makes him want you more than any stupid flirtatious remark ever could.
āNo,ā he says.
You approach him slowly. Levi sets the papers down, aligning them with the edge of the desk, as he always does. When you reach him, you donāt smash your lips against hisāeven though you desperately want to. Instead, you touch his sleeve first, then his wrist, then the back of his hand where his fingers rest against the desk.
āStop thinking so hard,ā you say.
āItās what Iām used to.ā
āI know.ā
His gaze drops to your mouth. āYou make it worse.ā
āGood worse or bad worse?ā
āDepends on what you do next.ā
You kiss him, and thereās nothing quick about it this time. Leviās hand rises to cup your face almost instantly, gripping your jaw firmly. The little sound he makes when you press yourself up against him is so involuntary, it makes your pulse jump and heat spread through your limbs. You back him into the desk by accident or maybe not, and he reaches up to grab your waist with his other hand. The desk creaks behind him.
Levi breaks away first, breathing unevenly, forehead nearly touching yours. āWait,ā he says.
You freeze immediately. āSorry.ā
āNo, notāā He exhales sharply, frustrated with himself, then looks away. āNot stop. Just wait.ā
You nod, sliding your hands down to rest against his chest. āWe can wait.ā
āThatāsāno, thatās not what IāI mean.ā
āWhat do you mean?ā
Thereās no insult waiting on his tongue this time. Levi looks down at your hands against his shirt, at the simple intimacy of being touched without being grabbed or wanted without being cornered. He swallows. You watch the anxiety move through him, which might not be visible to anyone else, but itās obvious to you now.
āIām notā¦ā He stops, then sighs. āIām not inexperienced, but Iāve only done this once before. A⦠a long time ago. It wasnātāā His mouth twists. āIt was fine. But it wasnāt this.ā Levi looks angry with himself for even saying it. āAnd now youāre looking at me like that.ā
āLike what?ā
āIāI donāt know. Like Iāmālike you could break me.ā
āI donāt think that. But you are nervous, arenāt you?ā His silence answers for him. You lift one hand to his face, touching him with enough care that he nearly closes his eyes. āThatās okay.ā
His laugh is barely a breath. āDoesnāt feel okay.ā
āIt is. I promise you.ā
āI donāt want to be bad at this.ā
You smile and brush your thumb along his cheek. āLevi, youāre not being graded.ā
āThat sounds like something you say before giving a bad grade.ā
You laugh softly. āIām serious.ā
āSo am I.ā
āI want you,ā you say, and your directness makes him freeze. āI donāt want a perfect version of you who knows exactly what to say or do. I want you. Nervous you, awkward you. A you who insults me because you donāt know how to flirtāā
āI know how to flirt,ā he frowns. āI told you that you looked better than you did yesterday.ā
āThat is the worst excuse for flirting Iāve ever heard, baby,ā you whisper. His ears turn red, and you grin.
āShut up,ā he mutters.
You kiss him again. His hand comes to rest on your waist, your fingers slide beneath his jacket, and his breath hitches when you move closer. Leviās anxiety doesnāt just disappear, but his nerves settle under your touch. With your comfort, heās able to move through them instead of having them stop him.Ā
When you begin taking off his jacket, you pause, waiting. He nods once, so you continue, and the jacket falls from his shoulders. Levi catches it before it can hit the floor, and in a motion that stuns you, he turns, folds it once over the back of the chair, smooths the fabric out, then turns back to look at you.
You stare at him. He stares back. āWhat?ā he says.
āAre you seriously folding your clothes right now?ā
āIām not leaving them on the floor like an animal.ā
āLevi.ā
āWhat?ā
āWeāre having a moment.ā
āAnd I can have a moment and have basic standards too.ā
You look at him for a second, then you start laughing, almost too loudly. It spills out of you before you can stop it. You donāt know what you expected, but you honestly shouldnāt be surprised that Levi Ackerman can be flushed, breathless, visibly aroused, and still be a clean freak.
āIf you laugh at me right now, Iām leaving,ā he mumbles.
āNo, youāre not.ā
āNo⦠Iām not,ā he says, irritated that heās proven your point.Ā
You catch his face in both hands and kiss him before he can recover, and that completely breaks his restraint. He grips your waist as he turns you and presses you back against the desk, enough to make you gasp and make his breath shudder in response. You feel him tremble once, or maybe itās just you, or maybe itās both of you. When you slide your fingers into his hair, ruining his neat parting, he makes a low, strained sound against your mouth.
āYouāre sure?ā he asks.
āYes.ā
āYou tell me ifāā
āYes.ā
He searches your face for any hesitation. āDonāt just say it becauseāā
āLevi,ā you whisper, pressing your forehead to his. āI promise. Iāll tell you. You tell me too.ā
He swallows, then he nods. He folds his cravat next, because thatās also non-negotiable, and you bite your lip so hard to keep yourself from laughing that he points at you and says, āDonāt.ā You help him with your own clothes and he tries not to stare too obviously until you step closer and guide his hands to you.
āYou can touch me,ā you say.
He flexes his fingers. āI know.ā
āDo you?ā
āIām not trying to be an idiot.ā
āYouāre doing fine.ā
āI havenāt done anything yet.ā
āBut I trust you.ā
Levi pulls you into the adjoining roomāhis quarters, a space youāve only seen in glimpses before. He leads you there with your hand in his, fingers laced tight. The moment the door clicks shut behind you, you both stare at each other. You feel your heartbeat in your throat as you both begin shedding the rest of what youāre wearing.
Levi pauses, his shirt half-unbuttoned, eyes flicking over you with that same mix of hunger and hesitation thatās been building for weeks. āCan I⦠undress you?ā He sounds like heās asking for permission to breathe.
You nod. āYes.ā
He exhales, the sound shaky, and steps closer. His hands rise to your shoulders first, sliding your shirt off. He follows the path of the fabric with his mouth, soft kisses pressed to the curve of your shoulder, then the side of your neck. His breath is warm.
Then you feel the faint tremble in his fingers as they roam lower, tracing the line of your ribs, the dip of your waist, mapping you without looking. He tugs at the rest of your clothes, peeling them away until youāre bare before him. His eyes are dark and wide with want. He canāt believe that youāre real, that youāre here, that you want him. The anxiety spikes again, making his hands shake just enough that you notice.
You reach up, covering one of his trembling hands with yours. You whisper against his ear, āItās okay, Levi. Breathe. Iām right here with you.ā
You see his shoulders loosen by a fraction. He presses a longer kiss to your neck, sucking gently at the skin until a bruise blooms. He then pulls back to finish undressing himself. You donāt pay attention to where the rest of his clothes end up, because by the time theyāre off, heās guiding you back onto the bed, the mattress dipping under your weight as he climbs over you.
He doesnāt hesitate when he shifts lower and settles between your thighs. Without warning, he dives in, mouth hot against you as his tongue strokes in a long, slow lick. It sends a jolt straight through your core. You jump, a gasp tearing from your throat. Your hands fly to his hair, fingers threading through his locks and gripping tight. The sensation is overwhelming despite its lightness.
Levi pulls up immediately, concern flashing across his face. āDo you want me to stop?ā he asks, then you see the panic overtake him. āIām sorry, I should have asked first, I justāā
āDonāt stop,ā you breathe out quickly, your grip on his hair easing but not releasing. āI was just surprised. It felt goodāreally good. Please, keep going.ā
You see the relief wash over him. Something hungrier takes its place. He nods once, then lowers himself again. His tongue teases your clit in firm strokes, alternating pressure that makes your hips twitch upward. At the same time, one hand slides between your legs, fingers slicking through your folds before one presses inside, curling just right as he adds a second.
The combination is devastatingāhis mouth sucking and licking with growing confidence, fingers thrusting in a steady rhythm that gathers heat in your belly. Leviās thoughts race. He wants you to feel good. He wants to make you fall apartāand it shows in the way he devours you. His tongue flicks faster over your sensitive bundle of nerves while his fingers work deeper, scissoring gently to stretch you.
Your moans threaten to spill out too loud, so you grab the corner of the pillow and bite down hard, the fabric muffling the sounds as your back arches. Levi notices, glancing up with a small, breathless laugh.Ā
āCute,ā he says, the word soft and fond before he doubles his efforts. His tongue presses flat and broad, then flicks rapidly while his fingers pump in time. The wet sounds of it mix with your muffled gasps. Pleasure coils tighter and tighter, your thighs trembling around his head as he pushes you higher.
Your orgasm crashes over you in waves. Your body clenches around his fingers as you ride it out, hips rolling against his mouth. He doesnāt pull away, licking you through every pulse, drinking you in with appreciative sounds until the peak fades and youāre left panting. The pillow is still clutched in your teeth.
Only then does he ease back. He presses gentle kisses to your inner thighs before crawling up your body again. His lips find yours in a deep, lingering kiss. The taste of you is shared between you. He presses against you, hard and aching to feel you, but heās content to just hold you close.Ā
He trails kisses from your jaw down to the middle of your throat. You feel the rapid beating of his heart against your chest, matching your own. When he pulls back slightly, his eyes are dark and wide, but you can see the flicker of anxiety within themāthe hesitation that he's been dragging with him the moment you stepped into his quarters.
āI want to,ā he says. His fingers trace your hipbones. āBut I donāt want to hurt you. I donātāā He stops, clenching his jaw, searching for the right words that wonāt make him sound as vulnerable as he feels inside.Ā
You reach up, cupping his face in your hands, forcing him to meet your gaze. āYou wonāt hurt me,ā you whisper. āWe go slow. We stop if anything feels wrong. I trust you, Levi.ā
The sound of his name seems to unlock something in him. He exhales shakily, nodding once, and shifts his hips to align with you. His length presses against your entrance. You feel the tremor that runs through his arms as he braces himself above you. Heās trying so hard to be controlled, to be carefulābut you can see the strain in his shoulders and his breath hitching.
He pushes in slowly, and the stretch is intense. Your breath catches, back arching slightly as your body adjusts. Heās thicker than you anticipated, filling you almost overwhelmingly. Levi notices instantly and freezes, his eyes snapping to yours with panic.
āAre youāshould I stop?ā he gasps, already starting to pull out.
āNo!ā you manage to say, gripping his shoulders tight. You wait a moment, letting yourself relax around him. Then you let out a breathy laugh thatās half wonder and half sensation. āYouāre just⦠youāre big. Really big.ā
Levi scoffs, though the sound is strained and his face is flushed. āStop exaggerating,ā he mutters. Heās still holding himself perfectly still, afraid of causing you pain by moving.
āIām not exaggerating,ā you insist, squirming slightly beneath him, which makes him groan low in his throat. āI need a minute to adjust. Youāre filling me up so much, Levi.ā
The explicit confirmation completely breaks him. His face goes redātruly, deeply red, even coloring the tips of his earsāand he lets out a choked sound of embarrassment. He ducks his head down, burying his face in the crook of your neck, hiding from you. You feel the heat of his blush against your skin and his chest rising with mortified breaths.
You canāt help the small giggle that comes out. You thread your fingers through his hair, holding him close. āHey,ā you whisper. āItās a good thing. I promise. Just⦠give me a second.ā
He mumbles something unintelligible against your neck. His hands slide down to grip your waist. You feel the slight shaking of them. Even now, while heās joined with you, he canāt shake his nerves. Itās almost endearing.
Once the initial burn eases into a pleasant ache, you wrap your legs around his hips and pull him deeper. āOkay,ā you breathe. āOkay, move. Please.ā
Levi lifts his head slowly. His expression is still flushed, eyes glassy with arousal. He searches your face for any sign of discomfort. When he finds none, he begins to move. His first thrusts are almost torturous in their gentleness. He rocks into you with shallow rolls of his hips, testing the rhythm and depth, watching your face carefully for any adverse reactions.Ā
āYou feel,ā he starts, then stops, letting out a sharp breath. āYou feel too good. I canātāā
āThen donāt hold back,ā you tell him, dragging your nails down his back. āLet go, Levi. I can take it.ā
The leash around his neck snaps. His pace quickens, thrusts deepening as he loses himself in the sensation of you wrapped around him. The bed shifts beneath you, the frame groaning as he moves faster and harder. The sound of your skin meeting grows louder in the quiet room. Heās still trying to maintain some controlāyou see it in the strain of his neck muscles. But itās slipping, eroding with every clench of your body around him.
You look up at him, watching the first bead of sweat forming on his forehead. His hair has fallen into his eyes. Heās beautiful like thisāundone and desperate.Ā
āCaptain,ā you whisper.
Leviās eyes flash. He responds with a single, brutal thrust that drives the air from your lungs and causes you to throw your head back against the pillow. You cry out, hands flying to grip his biceps. Your nails dig in hard enough to leave marks.Ā
He doesnāt apologize. He leans down, kissing you as he continues to drive into you. His tongue sweeps through your mouth, devouring, and you meet him eagerly. Your fingers tangle in his hair as he increases his pace. The kiss becomes messy, teeth clicking, breaths mingling in gasps. He pistons his hips, each thrust rocking the bed against the wall.
Youāre his. Thatās the only thought in his mind now, primal, washing away the last of his nerves. Youāre here and youāre his and you want this, want him. He canāt focus on the kiss anymore, canāt split his attention between the taste of your mouth and the heat gripping him so perfectly. He breaks away with a low sound, forehead dropping to rest against yours. His eyes squeeze shut. He surrenders completely to the need pounding through him.
His hips become relentless, a rhythm that has you gasping and clutching at him. You feel the tension coiling low in your belly again. The friction of him drags against your walls, building you toward another peak. The sounds coming from you are embarrassingly loudāmoans and whines that seem to echo. You instinctively raise a hand to cover your mouth, trying to muffle the noise.
Leviās hand shoots out, grabbing your wrist before you can hide your sounds. He pins your arm back against the pillow, then does the same with the other. He traps both wrists in one of his hands above your head. His eyes open, burning into yours.
āDonāt,ā he growls, voice gravelly. āDonāt cover your mouth. I want to hear you. Need to hear you.ā He ruts in particularly hard, angling his hips to hit that spot inside you that makes your vision blur. āLouder,ā he demands, practically begging. āPlease, let me hear how good Iām making you feel. Let meāfuckālet me hear it.ā
His words, the desperation in them, the way heās holding you open and vulnerable while he pounds into you, has your toes curling and back arching off the bed. You let the sounds come freely, cries of his name breaking from your lips. He groans in response, a visceral sound of satisfaction. His free hand slides between your bodies, thumb finding your clit and rubbing in circling strokes.
āLeviāā you gasp, straining against his grip. āIām close, Iām so closeāā
āCum for me,ā he pants. His own rhythm falters slightly as his own peak barrels down on him. āCum on my cock, let me feel youāā
The coil snaps. You cry out loudly as the pleasure crashes over you in waves. Your cunt clamps down on him so tightly he curses, a strained, filthy sound. He keeps thrusting through your climax, dragging out the bliss until his own control breaks.
With a final thrust, he buries himself to the hilt, his body locking into place above you. You feel him pulse inside you, feel the heat of his release flooding you as he cums with a ragged groan. He collapses forward, but catches himself on one arm. The other releases your wrists to cradle your face instead.Ā
He kisses you messily as he empties himself into you, his hips giving small, involuntary jerks with each pulse of his orgasm. You wrap your arms around his neck, pulling him down. He kisses you through the falling peak, his tongue languid against yours now. When he finally pulls back slightly, his eyes are half-lidded and dazed. The anxiety has been completely washed away and replaced by something sated.
āYou okay?ā he mutters, thumb stroking your cheekbone.
You laugh and press a kiss to his jaw. āBetter than okay. You?ā
He huffs out a sound that might be a laugh. He hides his face in your neck again. āYeah,ā he breathes against your skin. āYeah. Iām good. Weāre good.ā
When he pulls back again, you see the color high on his cheeks again. He slowly withdraws and falls beside you. The room is dark except for the grey light from the window. Levi lies stiffly at firstāas if sharing a bed with you is somehow more intimate than the sex. You almost laugh again, but then you see the uncertainty in his expression.Ā
You touch his bare chest, fingers stroking his skin. He looks at you. āYou can relax,ā you whisper.
āI am relaxed.ā
āYouāre all tense like youāre on trial.ā
His mouth twitches, so you move closer, resting your head on his shoulder. After a moment, his arm wraps around you, tentative for half a second before it relaxes, drawing you against him.
āThere,ā you say. āWasnāt so difficult, was it?ā
āTch. Youāre annoying.ā
āYou like me.ā
Heās quiet for long enough that you think heās either asleep or just ignoring you, but then his arm tightens around you.
āYeah,ā he says.
.
Morning arrives. You donāt know where you are at first. Thereās a strange warmth at your back, light pouring through at an angle that you usually donāt see in your room, the faint smell of black tea and clean linen, and an arm resting around your waist.Ā
Then Levi shifts behind you, and everything comes rushing back to you so fast your only response is a small squeak. You remember the office, his confession, his stupid folded jacket, his mouth and hands, his body fitting against yours.
You turn carefully. Levi is awake, his hair slightly disheveled as his eyes fix on you, less guarded than usual. āMorning,ā you whisper.
He stares at you for a few seconds, then, because heās Levi and doesnāt know what else to say, he says, āYou drool.ā
You open your mouth in offense. āI do not.ā
āYou did.ā
āI absolutely did not.ā
āOn my pillow.ā
āYouāre lying.ā
āBadly, apparently, since youāre not convinced.ā
You shove his shoulder lightly, but he grabs your wrist without the intent to stop you. He brushes his thumb over your inner wrist once. You look past him and notice his boots aligned near the wall, his pants half-folded on the chair beside it. Then, on the floor near the foot of the bed, you see his shirt. Wrinkled and abandoned and scandalously unfolded. Your eyes widen with joy. He follows your gaze, then freezes.
āOh,ā you say softly, āCaptain.ā
āNo.ā
āYou left that on the floor.ā
āStop.ā
āLike an animal.ā
He groans and closes his eyes. You start laughing before you can help it, and he rolls onto his back with a long sigh. He knows itās way too early in the morning for such nonsense. You know it too. Will you stop? Absolutely not.
āIāI was distracted,ā he stammers.
āYou? Distracted?ā
āDonāt sound so happy about it.ā
āIām incredibly happy about it.ā
āYouāre lucky I love you,ā he mutters.
Levi realizes what he said at the exact same moment you do. He opens his eyes, but he doesnāt turn to look at you yet. He stares at the ceiling, wondering if itās possible to just disappear off the face of the earth forever. You turn toward him slowly, your grin widening and softening at the same time.
āYou love me?ā you tease.
His face changes in increments: irritation, realization, horror, resignation. āNo.ā
āReally? You just said it though.ā
āIām tired.ā
āSo am I, and Iām talking just fine.ā
āFine. Then I was⦠vulnerable.ā
āThatās even worse for you.ā
āShut up.ā
You prop yourself up on one elbow, looking down at him while your heart beats hard. āYou love me.ā
Levi stares at the ceiling, hoping itāll fall on him and crush him at this very moment. Then, with a sigh that sounds like it was dragged from the very bottom of his soul, he reaches for you and pulls you down against him, hiding his face near your neck where you canāt see the color in his cheeks.
āYouāre making this weird,ā he says.
āIt is weird.ā
āDoesnāt have to be.ā
āIt definitely does. You insulted me for months because you had a crush.ā
āI brought you tea.ā
āYou called me sloppy.ā
āYou were sloppy.ā
āYou also fixed my cloak. What was that about?ā
āIt was crooked.ā
āAnd you told me my paperwork was tolerable.ā
āIt was.ā
āMarriage proposal,ā you whisper.
He groans into your shoulder. You laugh, smiling into his hair. Levi doesnāt tell you to stop, and instead just holds you there, letting the morning continue in all its noise and duty, while the two of you exist in the aftermath of your surrender to each other.
Levi still has no idea what to do with romantic feelings. Theyāll remain inconvenient for now. Messy and, quite frankly, a nightmare. But when you trace circles over his shoulder and whisper that heās the sweetest man you know, when you laugh softly against his mouth after he tells you not to push your luck, when your hand finds his beneath the blanket and he squeezes without thinking, he decides that maybe being terrible at feeling doesnāt mean he canāt learn how to feel.
After all, if youāre the one teaching him, he might just survive it.

You were pinned under him, skin slick and burning, every movement from Levi relentless. His hands gripped you hard, jerking you against him like he couldnāt get enough, like letting go wasnāt an option. Every ragged breath, every sharp groan, every growl of his made your body shake, teeth clenching, nails digging into his shoulders.
āLevi⦠pleaseā¦ā you gasped, voice trembling as he drove into you with brutal precision.
āFāfuck, stay still,ā he growled, voice low and hoarse, his jaw tight. But then, suddenly, his movements stuttered, a pause that made your chest hammer. His hands pressed harder against your hips, his gaze wild, almost unrecognizable.
āI⦠I need⦠I need you toāstay with me,ā he muttered, voice breaking, ragged. Then, almost strangled out in a whisper, āMarry me.ā
You froze mid-pleasure, heat and confusion mixing, pulse thundering. āWhatā¦?ā
āMarry me,ā he growled, teeth grazing your skin, voice rough and desperate, hands clenching your body like he couldnāt hold himself together. āI donāt⦠I donāt care aboutāanything else. Just⦠you. Always. Understand?ā
Your chest burned, body shaking from both the roughness of him and the weight of his words. āYouāre insane,ā you breathed, barely able to keep hold of him.
āI know,ā he snapped his hips harder, voice low and raw, almost growling in frustration. āAnd I donāt⦠care. Just⦠donāt leave me. Ever.ā
Even in the chaos of urgent, rough need, you could feel him trembling against you, his vulnerability peeking through the possessive heat. Somehow, you nodded, voice small, shaky, but certain: āAlright⦠yeah⦠always.ā
He let out a ragged breath, pulling you impossibly close, teeth grazing your shoulder. And even in the middle of the mess, the roughness, the desperate thrusts and groans, Levi Ackerman had just promised himself to you. And Levi doesn't break promises.

ā an alternate bakugou than i usually write!!! random lil drabble felt like writing lol
bakugou canāt help it. he doesnāt even want to call it jealousy because youāre his, his girlfriend of six months but those same green vines are strangling his heart every time he even hears about your ex boyfriend. you and that guy broke up amicably, friends, friends with your friends, heās just fucking everywhere.
bakugouās not even sure if it helps that him and that guy are nothing alike. different hair colour, different build, different jobs, perhaps the only similar thing is that theyāre men and thatās it.
but heād be scrolling on instagram and suddenly heās going through your following to find his account and then heās going through his pictures. holy fuck, he hates this fucking guy.
he looks through the pictures of your ex boyfriend in a library looking all artsy, on a random holiday, him winning some award in his career. luckily, heās deleted all photos of you and him but it doesnāt help that one time bakugou found an old polaroid of you and that guy in your room. you just threw it in a random drawer, clearly paying no mind to it but the same image burns in his brain. bakugouās no artist but he could draw it out, recall the exact details of that photo.
now, he knows this is all in his head. the stupid comparison, the annoyance that he still texts you completely friendly things, the fact you still see him at friend gatherings. he trusts you, he knows you itās justā¦
āyou loved him,ā bakugou bites and itās not at you, itās all at himself. at the gnawing voice at the back of his head he doesnāt understand.
you frown but laugh, albeit a bit uncomfortably. you donāt get what angle heās getting at. āi did, yes but weāre just friends now. you know that, katsuki.ā
heās stupid for even bringing this up to you, thereās nothing you can really say to even make him feel better about this. youāve both come back from an evening with your friends and he was there. your ex boyfriend was as friendly as fucking ever. no snark, no back handed compliments. he was supportive and even spoke to bakugou about this random niche comedian they both like.
he could forget about his hatred of the guy, but as soon as the conversation was over his head just wouldnāt shut up. glancing at you across the room thinking, is he better in bed? did he have more time for you?
and now that heās back at your apartment, heās staring at the side of your bed he sleeps on. heās fucking been there too.
āi know this is all me. i just fuckinā hate him.ā bakugou huffs, finally undressed and plopping down on your bed in just his underwear. he drops his face in his hands and he hears you still undressing around the room. āhe hasnāt even done shit and heās so so fuckinā kind.ā
fingers rake through his hair, slowly. you let the silence sit for a moment, mostly just to think through the situation. sure, you occasionally thought about bakugouās exes but it all fell silent since heās chosen you.
you slowly drop to your knees, sitting on your legs between his. you take one of his hands then finally bakugou looks over at you, defeat written in his ruby eyes.
ābaby,ā you whisper, studying his drooped muscled shoulders, the tired lines under his eyes. he grips your hand so tight you think you can feel his heartbeat. bakugou holds eye contact, searching for an answer, anything in yours.
āi love you, so much,ā you nod, kissing the back of his hand, āthe way i loved him was completely different to how it is with you. youāve taught me a whole different way of loving, of feeling love. everything iāve ever wanted in one package, is you.ā
bakugou sighs softly, mouth open to speak but you pat his knee. āyouāve got no need to feel jealous. we are still friends because we didnāt end badly, we just wanted different things and heās still friends with my friends, so iām sorry thereās no escape to him.ā
bakugou shakes his head rapidly, grumbling, āno, no donāt apologise. itās just he seems so much nicer. fuck, i know i sound stupid.ā
you rub his beard, dragging his face down for a kiss. itās just a little smooch for him to pay attention to you and only you. his lips are dry yet soft, chasing after you once you pull away.
āheās alright but you donāt really know him and neither do i anymore. he probably goes home and hates you too,ā you laugh, ābut if thereās anything you want to know or for me to confirm i will. i love you, katsuki.ā
bakugou cups your chin, pecking your lips, ājust a weird day for me. love you too.ā

an. this is just me being thirsty as fuck over this mingi video tbh.. hope you enjoy <3 not proofread! taglist: @yslj1n @joongnoodle @matznana @kisssan @fixonjade
something about having you like this was mingis favourite thing in the world.
your back facing him, knees and arms pressed deep into the mattress. his other heavy hand rested on the dip of your spine, bending your body to bend even more forward as his eyes tightened.
his other hand was dragging down the back of his neck, mouth slightly cracked as he watched your pussy twitch under his gaze. some of your juices were dripping down to the bed, the skin slick to the touch as his body inched closer.
his cock was tight in his grip now, leaning forward to trail down your slit, messing up his precum with yours, his lip now tightly between his pearly teeth.
āyou need me donāt you? desperate girlā
his other palm made contact with your cheeks, slightly tearing them more open to get a better visual of your pussy sucking him in. he couldnāt get enough of it.
that slight stretch as he pushed in, the sound it made, the amount of liquids running down your thighs as his cockhead pushes its way inside properly.
mingi leaned forward a bit, trying to catch the best view of the situation. his gold chain swung on his neck as he pushed forward, making you squeal into the pillows.
he knew he was big, big enough to make you writhe yet beg for more. and he made sure you felt every inch, every vein, everything as he moved into you in a slow rhythm.
āyou feel that? feel me tearing this pussy open, yeah? just the way you like itā
all you could do is mumble, the sensation overtaking you as mingis pelvis met your ass. he knew if he turned you around, he could see himself bulging out of your lower stomach, and it only made him more hungry.
snapping his hips back, the first thrust was enough to knock the bedframe harshly against the wall. he couldnāt hold back anymore, hands tight on your hips as he started to pick up his pace, making you an absolute mess.
his sounds were rough, sharp. groans and moan tore out his throat, his tongue hanging out his mouth as he watched the opening of your pussy taking him in just right.
your thighs were shaking as your hips made contact, your mouth spread wide open but unable to respond as you felt yourself drawing awfully close so quickly.
mingi knew he wouldnāt last long like this either, but he didnāt care. he would love this view even if itās for two minutes, or two hours. still, worth every second.
some spit trickled down from his tongue to your ass, running down your inner thighs. the sensation made your pussy clench tight around his cock, making his breath hitch in his throat. his fingers digging into your flesh, he basically hissed:
ādo that again.ā
and so you did, clamping down against him as his tight and precise thrusts continued, and you knew it would end very soon. mingis entire body twitched, one slightly higher moan leaving his throat as he leaned forward towards you.
āmin-ā you tried to speak, your voice a faint whisper. his hand tucked around your chest, pulling you up to meet his thrusts, his face near yours now.
āyeah? what is it baby?ā his voice was out of breath, yet still seeping that same need. you gulped between moans, trying again.
ād-donāt stop-pleaseā your voice was tiny, barely leaving your mouth. mingis fingers tightened around your torso as his pace picked up again, his other hand trailing down to your pussy.
āoh trust me, i wonāt.ā
you were so out of it by now, maybe almost as much as mingi. his body was like moving on its own, his thrusts sloppy but rough, tongue running up the side of your neck, other hand twisting and turning around on your clit.
āwish you could see this, too fucking good. have to film you next time, let you see, fuckā
your nails dig into his arm around you, body shaking back and forth as he fucked you full. his fingers on his other hand were spinning consistent circles on your bud, making sparks run all over as you gripped him tighter.
āwanna cum on your ass, please babyā mingi growled into your ear, kissing into after like a soothing sensation. you nodded swiftly, feeling your body dropping back to the bed.
his hips thrusted forward a few more times before pulling back, and then you felt it. thick hot ropes of cum splashed onto the skin of your asscheeks, marking you like mingi intended. he was so loud, mouth hung wide open as he jerked himself through his orgasm, his tip occassionally touching your pussy as he leaned forward.
āshitttt baby.. youāre unbelievable.ā his voice spoke breathless, his chest heaving as you looked back. you saw him lean over to his pants on the floor, digging for his camera.
āmin- what-ā
ātold you iāll show you, now, stay there just like thatā he adviced you, and so you did. back arched, ass up in the air for him to capture onto his film camera.
the flash light shone over your body, and then you finally slumped down properly. you were worn out. mingi threw his camera back onto the floor before rolling next to you, pulling you up to meet his gaze. he had that special grin on his face, leaving a sloppy kiss on your cheek before pulling you back up to him.
āgot more energy?ā he asked simply, his hand snaking back down to your leaking pussy. you nodded, albeit not as energetic as you wanted to. he nodded, biting onto his plump lip.
āmhm, then let me clean up after myself, yeah?ā
his fingers curled up into your pussy, making you shriek into his shoulder, only causing him to chuckle.
ārelax baby, just cleaning you up, everywhere.ā
his fingers fucked into your pussy, meeting that spongy spot inside you deep inside. you gripped tight into his bicep, holding on as you felt yourself falling apart so soon.
āthere you go baby, let me have it, take it all out of youā his mouth eager against your neck, you let yourself fall apart on his lengthy, thick fingers.
you gushed everywhere, the squirt drenching both you and mingi, as well as the bedsheets, making him smirk agaisnt your skin.
