I’m still so 😵‍💫 about this concept……. I very well may actually fucking write it one of these days and I know I say that a lot but this might really be the one to make me do it okay like ,, esp if shane and troy have just Not Clicked yet really, like they haven’t had Problems™️ or anything and Shane does like that Ilya has a friend really he does even if it still confuses him that that friend is Troy “reformed” Barrett, but like when he and Harris came over to have a doggie playdate, he definitely didn’t go out of his way to say anything more than “hey what’s up” to troy even when harris dangled the bait of “oh hey shane by the way, I hear you both have the same cheat day meal? Salmon, right?” because as friendly as Harris sounded when he said it, Shane’s still a little fucking sore about being poked and prodded for what’s on his plate after everything last year, so he just gives a tight-lipped grin and quips about how amazing it is that two professional athletes would enjoy a meal that’s a good source of protein and helps reduce post-workout inflammation before standing up and offering to refill whatever they’ve got in their glasses. So basically yeah.. when Troy attempts a heart-to-heart about team tough love and coaching approaches, it’s definitely not one Shane is interested in listening to for at least like the first third of the convo. Maybe even more than that. Which…… delicious ! Because troy my darling troy is so cat left out in the rain about All Of This of course !!!!! And believes he deserves to be soaked so isn’t even scratching at the back door. Harris and Ilya are telling him Shane will warm up and Troy is like “why would he? I was an asshole. He shouldn’t have to.” So this talk isn’t an attempt to be friends with shane, this isn’t him trying to win him over or butter him up, it’s earnest, it’s one solid player from a former harsh coach telling another solid player having a hard time adjusting that the new methods Do Work even if it doesn’t feel like they should, even if it feels like they’re being let off easy or getting away with something, even if it feels like any success they ever had in the past was purely because of the suffering they endured. It wasn’t. Hockey isn’t a vending machine that you put suffering coins into until it spits out stanley cups. It’s a more complicated game than that. Wiebe knows that. Troy knows that. Shane, when he makes himself admit it to himself, knows that too. *the good place “good damage” crashout here but paraphrased to be about coaches and championships* And they don’t come away from that talk as best buddies. And shane doesn’t come away from that talk 10000% bought in. But the first layers have cracked. The sunshine is peaking through. shane makes a point to apologize to and shoulder punch haas before they all leave the arena next practice.
