The debate as to whether the word âbisexualâ was worth keeping was derailed by biphobia. The average bisexual was seen to be inherently a creep, a pervert, and a transphobe, and thereby it was decided that anyone who uses the word âbisexualâ and doesnât move on to one of the various alternative labels must embody transphobia and perversion (though this accusation is often phrased in the politest way possible). The behavior and beliefs of the individual bisexual is irrelevant. As a result, people started âreclaiming", in a sense, the word bisexual as a defense against biphobia. The meaning of the word âbisexualâ has changed, for many, to include the meaning, âI will not tolerate biphobia in any form.â

People are always like "you can't make all the characters gay. It's just not realistic for a friend group to have that many gay people."
And then suddenly in your 30s you look at your friend group, and it's all gay people, and a drug dealer đ¤Łđ¤Łđ¤Ł
Make your fic as gay as you wanna make it.
I just went looking for young artists accepting commissions, because I want a color pencil sketch of my cat for $20 or less and...... I went through 10 different artists and all they draw is Furries!!!! Tumblr, gurl.... what happened to you? Hahahaha

Just thinking about all of the fanfiction I read 15 years ago that no longer exists đ
purge of 2002? of 2012? what ARE those?
Oh, how quickly the past is forgotten.Â
They are part of the reason A03 is a thing now. Not the whole reason, but part of it.Â
The Great Purges of 2002 and 2012 are when ff.net got a wild hair up their ass about THINK OF THE CHILDREN and nuked any fic posted on there that was explicit. Thousands upon thousands of nc-17 smutfics were lost.
Itâs what led to the creation of alternate hosting sites for smutty ficâŚAdultFanfiction was the one I went toâŚbut thousands of fics would never be recovered.Â
Shit like the Great Purges and the Strikethrough of Livejournal eventually led to fans banding together to create A03, which I would have absolutely KILLED for when I was 15.
Back up ao3 was created by fans?
ItâsâŚright on the main page.Â
I love this because I will bet you that persefv has read that bit we are all so inundated with hyperbole and advertising that says that the consumer is somehow in charge of whatever product they are shilling that we all just assumed this was another sales tactic.
But weâre not even⌠selling anythingâŚÂ *quiet sobs*
No ads. No subscriptions. No data selling.
We are the definition of âwhat it says on the tin.â
Is there any way to spread this info?Â
THE OTW WAS CREATED BY FANS SO WEâD HAVE AN ARCHIVE THAT WASNâT SUBJECT TO CORPORATE REVIEW.Â
Nonprofit, so that nobody could ever say, âthis isnât making enough money; itâs getting shut down.â (See: Geocities, Quizilla, Figment, G+.) With lawyers involved and a firm awareness of the legalities of fanfic, so nobody would decide âweâve gotten a nasty letter from a megacorporation with lawyers, so weâre hiding because we canât afford to face a lawsuit. (Jedi Hurtaholics, Trevizoâs Millennium site.) With teams, so that an argument between co-mods didnât result in the destruction of a whole archive. (Gryffindor Tower, Detention.)
AO3 IS OUR SITE.
It is by fans, for fans. Fans do all the coding. All the legal paperwork. All the abuse/tos violation complaints. Fans make all the choices about policies. Fans decide how to run the fundraisers. Fans write the blog posts. All the volunteer staff are fans; all the people who train them are fans. Fans wrangle all the tags.Â
(And the other OTW projects, too. Fans manage the entries at Fanlore. Fans run the Open Doors project. Fans publish Transformative Works and Cultures.)
EVERYONE WORKING FOR THE OTW LOVES FANDOM. Wants it to survive. Wants it to be awesome for everyone.
(Knows that it canât be awesome for everyone; some approaches to fandom just clash hard. But they strive to minimize those clashes as much as possible, because they love fandom.)Â
AO3 is not some company that decided, âweâll make a site for fanfic and thenâŚâ I donât know what people are thinking is the reason. Money? Data harvesting? Tax shelter? Amusement and pity?
Nope; AO3 was fans saying, âLivejournal sucks; weâre tired of this fucked-up ârebuild every three yearsâ garbage; WE NEED TO OWN THE DAMN SERVERS.â
Thatâs the âof our ownâ part of the name. OTW isnât a âthemâ running the site âfor us.â Itâs âusâ making places for âusâ to share what we love with others of âus.âÂ
This this this.
I was there for all of that shit, and AO3 is a godsend. If you enjoy or create fanworks, support AO3, donate if you can, and remember why itâs there in the first place!!
Fandom history really does get lost quickly. For current 20-something fans, AO3 has always been there.
Itâs not a corporation, itâs a co-op.

âao3 is a flawed site that has issues dealing with racism in a meaningful way and those issues need to be addressed and fixedâ and âao3 is an incredibly important instituation that allows fandom the safety to thrive in a way never before seen on the internetâ are coexistent truths. End ID]
THIS is what Iâve been trying to convey about AO3 for ages. We can discuss the problems the site has and how to address them while acknowledging that itâs an incredibly important resources.
It really is fan made and fan run. I got into an argument with one of the early mods from ao3, on a message board on a different site, and was banned from having an account for YEARS. Lmfao.
Way back in the day alot of fanfiction was on a site called Quizilla. The site was kind of like... a host for... buzzfeed like quizzes. Think "what Disney princess are you", only anyone could make them. People would just make the questions "do you like drarry?" Do you want to read my fic?" And the quiz result would be fanfic!! After that alot of fic could be found on Greatest Journal, but the site was junk and would delete posts after awhile and it was a nightmare to navigate. Then came Live Journal, which at first was amazing. When they were faced with lawsuits about minors having access to smut they Purged everything. Some people went to ff.net, but it was a pain to navigate and just all around wasn't great. AO3 is the BEST host site for fanfic. They have their problems, but the navigation and structure are amazing! Bookmarks on your account are amazing. Do you know how much of a pain it was to copy paste an entire fic? Especially since you had to either email it to yourself or print it out, or else your parents could find it on the family computer!!
A controversial theory: Worm on a string are furby larvae
So thatâs their life cycle!!!
From facebook; mic drop.
So that last line punched me in the face so hard I hit the reblog button. Oh well.
Youâre telling me my favorite fanfic is twice the size of Deathly Hallows? And I read it for FREE? We are truly blessed by these writers who make literal novels .
