i said a thing and I meant it one way but it came out another

I want to be clear that this isn’t me saying “feel bad for bigots who happen to live in the country.” I’m trying to say that many gay and bisexual folks in rural areas are dealing with levels of internalized homophobia that cause them to disidentify completely with homosexuality and the community at large, and their experiences need to be respected the same as anyone’s, not mocked & patronized by people who live in less repressed regions and think that means they know better. You don’t.

And honestly, for younger rural gay and bisexual folk, the two speeds of what little we know about gay culture is “you will get aids or be struck down by god because you are a sinner and your punishment is coming” or some backwash, mutilated telephone-game of tumblr queer theory that does more harm than it ever does good. Trauma mixed with sincere isolation destroys our sense of self for many, many years, and most of us will never be able to unlearn it even if we manage to “come out.”
