You rubbed your tired eyes for what seemed like the hundredth time that day, despite it being the middle of what would prove to be yet another long day. Even though you had been in your current job for the past six months, you never seemed to get used to the busy days filled with a workload that never seemed to wane and only seemed to increase as time passed on. You sighed and willed your mind to think of something else, not wanting your already short lunch break to be ruined by thoughts of your workload.
You looked around the train, seeing different people than what you were used to seeing during your morning and evening commutes. Here, people seemed more relaxed, and mainly used to trains to go grocery shopping or to meet friends rather than the usual hustle that you were used to with the rest of the people using the train. You were in awe at how little people there were on the train, as opposed to the packed environment that you were used to being in. As you looked around the small train car, you accidentally made eye contact with a tall man who seemed to be around your age. He gave you a small smile, which you returned before hastily looking away, choosing to instead focus on the ground.
In your observations, however, you failed to notice how you were now leaning against the train door, and how the train was about to reach another station to pick up more passengers. You felt the support leave your back as the door opened, causing you to let out a small shriek and grab onto anything that would break your fall. All you felt was air and you closed your eyes hoping that somehow you would fall onto the platform and not onto the tracks, sparing you any harm. What you didn’t expect, however, was a pair of arms to wrap around your waist, pulling you back into the train car as the door was about to close on you. As you felt the train move out of the station, you slowly opened your eyes, not knowing what to expect when you opened them.
Instead of the station roof that you expected to would be faced with, you were instead staring at the man that you had smiled at before, his face close to yours and etched with an expression of worry as he looked at you for any signs of hurt or discomfort.
“I’m y/n” you said, internally slapping yourself at the way that you essentially blurted out the first thing that has come to your mind.
“I’m Mingi. Are you hurt?” the man asked, pulling you up from your slightly dipped position. You quickly shook your head, face becoming hot as you noticed how he still hadn’t moved his arm from your waist. He let out a sigh of relief, casting a small smile in your direction. You felt your heart melt at the smile, and just when you thought it couldn’t happen, your face became even more red, causing you to awkwardly cough as you tried to play off your timidness at his proximity. He finally seemed to remember that he was still holding you and let go of your waist, his face also slightly reddening as he took a few steps back to give you your space. The train began to slow down as it reached the next station, which just so happened to be the one that you were getting off at.
“I was just heading out for lunch, do you want to join me? I could repay you for basically saving my life.” you said, blurting out the words at a rapid pace so that he wouldn’t get the wrong idea. Mingi smiled and nodded, replying with a small “I would like that” while giving his hand to help you get off the train. You took his hand and exited, both of you making your way to the restaurant where you had planned to get lunch.
You held onto Mingi’s hand as the both of you walked to the restaurant, gladly accepting the unplanned encounter that was somehow turning your gloomy day a bit brighter.
