On the fourth Saturday of November, Ukraine commemorates the victims of the Holodomor. At the beginning of the 20th century, Ukraine experienced three Holodomors: 1921-1923, 1932-1933, and 1946-1947. According to estimates by the International Association of Holodomor-Genocide Researchers, 10.5 million Ukrainians died of hunger in 1932-1933. How museums in Ukraine tell about the tragedy — read in the material.
repost from Suspilne culture
As russia again spread darkness across Ukraine, candles in windows carry two meanings.
Today, present meets past.
Today a candle in remembrance for victims of another genocide by russia.
Holodomor, a manmade famine that from 1932-33 killed 25000 Ukrainians every single day.
The Holodomor (1932-1933) is one of the largest genocides in history. It began when Stalin forced Ukraine into collectivization. Ukrainian farmers were forced to give up their land, livestock & harvest.
Stalin’s response?
“Starve them to submission”
An orchestrated famine.
Soviet authorities seized every grain of food: harvests, livestock, seeds, even the bread inside people’s homes.
They set quotas no one could ever meet.
Then sent armed brigades to go door to door to strip everything edible—
leaving entire villages with nothing but death ahead.
To ensure Ukrainians couldn’t survive, Stalin sealed the borders.
No one was allowed to flee.
No one was allowed to search for food.
Villages were blockaded like giant open-air prisons.
Trying to leave? Shot.
Trying to hide grain? Executed.
Starvation became a weapon.
By June 1933:
25,000 Ukrainians were dying;
EVERY
SINGLE
DAY!
Imagine a death toll equal to an entire town erased every 24 hours.
Mothers, children, grandparents—gone.
And the world’s Breadbasket was turned into a graveyard by design, not drought.
While millions starved, Stalin bragged of “record harvest”
The Soviet exported millions of tons of grain, enough to feed Ukraine’s entire population.
A crime russia continues today, stealing Ukrainian grain, selling stolen goods to fuel their war & kill those they steal from.
For decades, the USSR erased the Holodomor from history.
Foreign journalists were sent to staged “Potemkin villages”—fake scenes of prosperity hiding mass death.
Like russia does today, sending “influencers” to Mariupol, to
Showcase the fake fronts, while hiding the ruins.
A few brave reporters—like Gareth Jones & Malcolm Muggeridge managed to document the truth, but were silenced by Soviet sympathizers in the West.
Most infamous was Walter Duranty of NYT, he denied the famine & won a Pulitzer for it. His lies helped bury the murder of millions.
Only after the collapse of the Soviet Union did the truth resurface through newly opened archives.
Raphael Lemkin, who coined the term genocide, called the Holodomor “the classic example of Soviet genocide.”
The world is still catching up to that reality.
Stalin made sure the true death toll won’t ever be known.
The Soviet regime destroyed Birth & death registers, census data, village archives — all “corrected,” falsified, or vanished.
Doctors were banned from writing “starvation” on death certificates
A silenced genocide.
This is why estimates vary from 7-10 million people.
And scholars argue: anything less than 10million ignores the reality of the people in the villages that were completely erased.
Where no one survived, no one were there to keep count, there was no one left to remember.
Then there’s the number often unmentioned: of the unborn.
It’s estimated that over 600,000 unborn or infant losses.
Pregnancies ended, newborns alongside their mothers died of starvation.
Demographers call this the “lost generations” effect — a hallmark of genocide.
Most reliable estimates come from “excess mortality” — comparing expected population growth to the sudden plunge in 1932–33.
The drop is staggering.
Even conservative models show millions vanished from Ukraine in a single year.
That alone proves the scale of the crime.
So when someone asks: “How many died?”
The most honest answer is:
More than the world will ever be able to count.
Because this genocide wasn’t only about killing people.
It was about erasing them so completely that even their memory couldn’t survive.
The importance of remembering, sharing and talking about this history is now more important than ever.
As russia is once again trying to erase Ukraine’s identity, sovereignty, and existence.
Genocide denied becomes genocide repeated.
Memory is resistance.
Truth is defense.
The Holodomor is not only history.
It is a warning of what unchecked totalitarianism does—again & again—when it is not stopped.
Ukraine has faced attempts of erasure before.
It was silent then. It’s loud now.
There is no excuse for allowing this chapter to be repeated.

Do you want to know what hell sounds like?
At two in the morning, a russian shahed hit the house next to mine — 130 meters from my apartment. Rescuers have already recovered the bodies of three of my neighbors, dozens are injured, and the rescue operation is still ongoing.

Thank you for the tag @kitmarlowe 🌸
Favourite colour: currently terracotta, it's just so warm and autumn-y
Currently reading: Half of a Yellow Sun by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, it's the first Nigerian book I've come across and it's extremely well-written!! It does get a bit annoyingly relationship-y/soap-y in the middle, and it's way too long (550 pages) but the bits about the civil war and the descriptions in general are 10/10
Last song: Little Ghost by The White Stripes (can you scare me up a little bit of love?) 👻
Last film: Buried (2010) i don't remember how i found out about it (did any of you lovely people rec it? thank you if so), but the premise is very in9!! inside a coffin no less! so a guy wakes up and realises he's been buried alive, he only has a cellphone and a lighter. the movie is like 1:40 long, and so fucking dramatic considering it's just one guy in the dark: he's trying to get a hold of help while constantly being put on hold (so tragically funny), negotiating with terrorists, at one point there is a fucking snake, sand starts trickling on top of him... and you don't find out whether he makes it until the last minutes.
Last series: Taskmaster? is Bake Off a series? I need to catch up with the new season of 1670
Sweet/savoury/sour: savoury always!! I do have a sweet tooth, but savoury snacks are like crack to me
Tea or coffee: only tea, always and forever

Hii!! Thanks for tagging me <3
Loved colours: i love pink (more rasberry/red shades especially), orange and purple
Reading: i still want to finish that little mystery story... "Tragedy at the ravensthorpe". it's old so vocabular is confusing sometimes but overall it was interesting, i just can't get into mood to pick it up
Last song: i wasn't listening to anything in past few days
Last film: minecraft movie. It wasn't good (racism and misogyny) but it wasn't completely atrocious. I thought it'd be worse. 6/10 for me. I started watching kpop demon hunters but got distracted and didn't get even in half of movie. I want to watch it soon
Last series: murder she wrote. It's baaaad. Why would you be watching something good when you can watch something so mid it wouldn't even be good if it was good. When its good its mid, when its bad its just grossly preaches pacifist nonsense.
Sweet/savoury/sour: heavily depends on my mood! Most of the time i prefer sweet things, then savoury and sometimes sour
Tea or coffee: out of these i'll pick tea but idc really, as long as it has sugar and not too hot i'm fine. I also like bubbly water with flavours

Favourite colour: deep blue and light purple
Currently reading: the Golden Beetle collection by Edgar Poe. A youtube video made me look into the Fall of the House of Usher, to remember why I hate it, and I just kept going. Also read I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream for the first time because of that video. Inventive setting, picturesque torture methods, the main character is such a bitch, his is the only type of person to go through with what was needed for the freeing of the other characters. Incredible body horror. Why is the only lady the nimpho tho. Reread The Yellow Wallpaper to cleanse my palate afterwards. Just started the Caste, never read much nonfiction.
Last Song: Sucker by Markus King
Last Film: oh, man, oh, man... might be the new Superman. I liked it, it was very light, like a fairytale, but I didn't particularly enjoy it. Not in the mood for that type of thing rn
Last Series: Knights of Guinevere? Does it count if only the plot is out? Tried rewatching The Immortal Samsara but couldn't find it ☹️
Sweet/savory/sour: sweet all the way
Tea or coffee: tea probably. I do drink a lot of it lately with the weather turning

I had to ask how to properly do reblogs...
Favourite colour: dark emerald Currently reading: what a coincidence — today I got a book from a friend, Once Upon a Broken Heart by Stephanie Garber, and I’ve already read a few pages. They promised me Howl’s Moving Castle vibes, and that’s exactly the kind of fantasy I need right now.
I really like the book’s edge design.
Last song: Не вдвох by SadSvit Last film: I don’t think I’ve watched any movies this month... or the last ones. Have I even watched anything this year? Can’t remember. Last series: the latest episode of South Park. Sweet / savoury / sour: I like all of them, but I have specific moods for each taste. Tea or coffee: I like that I got tagged today of all days, because I went to a tea festival and tried around ten different kinds of tea. I didn’t buy any, because there’s coffee waiting for me at home. My coffee consumption is... unhealthy.

I just wanted to relax and play a game after work, but out of all the games, I ended up choosing Wukong. The first boss killed me about twenty times before I managed to defeat him.
As soon as the first boss was killed, a second one appeared, even worse...
