What is it?

In 2015, Amazon marked its 20th anniversary with Prime Day, one of the biggest sales events the site had ever seen - featuring 24 hours of deals and offers. It could have been a one-off, but luckily for us, they’ve decided to make it an annual event. And this year, the deals promise to be even more impressive.

So, if you’re a fan of November’s Black Friday sales event on the high street, get ready for similar bargains. The aim is to create a summertime shopping holiday for consumers, and analysts are expecting Amazon will include around double the number of offers as last year.  

When is it?

Prime Day officially begins at midnight Pacific Time on July 12, when the main bulk of offers will hit the site. However, smaller daily deals are already on offer in the lead up to the event. These are called Prime Day Countdown Deals, and are also only available to Prime members. So it’s well worth signing up for Prime now if you haven’t already.

How do I get the deals?

You get the deals by signing up to Amazon Prime, it’s as simple as that. If you’re not currently a member, you can sign up for a free 30-day trial and still get access to Prime Day deals. Amazon are so confident you’ll be pleased with what you get from Prime (which includes access to their TV and movie streaming service, next-day delivery on purchases, and access to the Kindle library) they’ll secure you as a permanent subscriber to the service.

How does it work?

Offers will be updated on Amazon throughout the day on July 12, while stocks last. If you’d like some help following the steam of deals coming in, this year the Amazon App will let you track upcoming deals and receive notifications when they're about to begin.

You’ll want to keep a close eye on the deals until you’ve hit your budget limit on Prime Day, as special deals will be filtering onto the site throughout the day. These include ‘Lightning Deals’ so named because they’ll usually go in a flash. They’ll have a countdown timer to let you know how long you have before they end.

What type of deals can you expect?

TV, toys and tech are big buzzwords in 2016. Amazon have promised twice as many TV offers as ‘Black Friday and Cyber Monday combined,’ with toy deals promised ‘nearly all day.’ However, there will be offers across the site, in pretty much every section.

We spoke to self-employed business owner and Initial Naval Training Instructor Eddie Crow* to find out more about Royal Naval Reserve.

Eddie’s role in the RNR is to deliver initial naval training to all recruits to ensure they have the skills, fitness, core values and commitment to be part of the Naval Service.

Why do people join the RNR?

According to Eddie, many people that want to do something that is completely different from their everyday job and adds a new exciting dimension to their life.

It's a dimension that can take you around the globe and give you additional skills you couldn’t learn anywhere else. The added benefit is that you get paid for what you do so you can see it as a part time job and a source of income.

Other people may have always wanted to do something with the military but not wanted (or been able) to commit full time.  

What can I expect when I join?

“A day on the confirmation course (which is a two-week residential training package delivered as the final part of initial naval training) involves days of early starts and late finishes of instruction including general naval knowledge, core maritime skills, personnel standards, leadership training, seamanship and physical fitness,” Eddie explains.

What are they looking for?

"RNR recrits need drive and committment,” he says. “To be honest, by this stage in the training programme recruits are fully committed to the RNR.

"I enjoy the instructional role that I have now. I enjoy educating people and turning the lights on above their heads. I’ve got some great friends with like-minded people so my favourite thing overall is just being part of it all."

What do you learn?

Eddie tells us that you can gain professional qualifications, meaningful skills and experienced many new things. You will be military-trained, resourceful and self-reliant and able to utilize the courage within you.

"It’s also changed my outlook on life. I used to think I knew what was important to me, but now I do know", Eddie says. "I’ve changed for the better over the years of service. I’ve adopted my own can-do attitude because that’s how the Navy takes on any task it’s given. You can’t help but take that home with you."

Do you get to travel?

Yes. Eddie lists Gambia, Afghanistan, the Mediterranean, Cyprus, Norway and all over the UK as places he’s been able to travel as part of the RNR.

Depending on the nature of the tasks required  you  may be able to spend some time seeing what the country has to offer, so you do get to experience the places you visit too.

What else do you get to do?

There is so much more to the RNR than you might expect. For example, Derek recalls meeting Royals and having lunch with Prince Harry as one of his favourite moments during his time in the RNR.

“I’ve been very privileged,” he says. “In March this year, I took part in the Afghanistan Commemorative Celebration in London. There was a parade and I got to meet a lot of the Royals and had lunch with Prince Harry which was very nice. That’s quite a large highlight. We’d both been in Afghanistan so we were able to have a conversation about that.”

The Royal Naval Reserve (RNR) is a chance to develop skills, knowledge and personal qualities that help people progress in their civilian work and provides opportunities to meet new friends, stay fit and healthy and travel.

James Collins* has been a Royal Naval Reservist for seven years. We spoke to him to discuss why he decided to join and his experiences.

James currently works as a Digital Communications Manager. This involves promoting campaigns and raising awareness for organisations via digital channels like websites and social media.

In the RNR he holds the rank of Lieutenant in the Mine Warfare Specialization. He’s training  to deploy as a member of the crew onboard the Royal Navy’s state of the art ships designed to locate and destroy mines at sea.

Learn new skills

One of the key benefits for James was the breadth of opportunity to learn new skills when you join the RNR.

“I think one aspect of the training is all about reaching your potential. I’ve certainly found out a lot about myself.

“When I was last at sea, I was involved with operational sea training on a Royal Navy ship and one of the tasks included gunnery practice with the main weapons system. The following day I was working on a Disaster Relief Exercise.”

Be part of a team

Teamwork is a key aspect of the RNR which forms deep friendships with new people. James explains that bonding with shipmates is a great part of being part of the organization.

“I enjoy being with my shipmates. They are an exceptional bunch of people and I enjoy being in their company.

“When I’ve been away and it’s been tough and my shipmates have gathered round and got me through it and visa versa.”

Do your bit

James explained that one of the reasons behind wanting to join the RNR was to do his bit for the country. He decided to join the RNR because he’d “always had an interest in the sea and maritime.”

Be part of big events

James also explained that due his involvement in the RNR, you get to part of very special events.

“The ceremonials that we conduct such as the Festival Of Remembrance are special. You’ve got the poppies falling down and the Royal family present which is very moving. It's an honor to be part of that."

It’s a good time to join

If you’ve ever thought about joining the Royal Naval Reserve, you may be wondering what it’s actually like once you signed up.

Well, we spoke to Communications Specialist and Traffic Officer Pete Worthy* to find out more about his experience being part of the RNR.

Pete was in the Navy full-time for 7 years before leaving to start a family. He soon realized that he missed the excitement and energy so decided to join the RNR in order to enjoy the benefits of a service life while allowing him time to enjoy family life.

In his civilian life, he works as a Traffic Officer for Highway England, looking after the motorways and keeping the traffic moving.

As part of the RNR, Pete swaps his role keeping the roads clear to ensuring the communication is clear between Royal Navy ships deployed at sea.

“We mainly look after communications and IT systems to ensure that ships are able to keep in touch with whoever they’re working with and communicating with in the UK if we are deployed abroad,” he says.

No day is ever the same

Pete explains that although he has a core role to play in the RNR, no day is ever the same. He tells us that “there is no such thing as an average day. That’s one of the things I enjoy about it. Variety is the spice of life and that’s what you get in the RNR. I speak to plenty of people in a 9 to 5 office job and they know exactly what they are doing everyday. One of the things I enjoy most about my civilian and RNR job is that you don’t know quite what is going to happen next.

He followed up with some examples to prove this exciting aspect of his role and explained “the most recent deployment was in Bahrain. There we were dealing with the day to day communications from the command back to the UK.

“Then once back in the UK, we did a lot of training and keeping up the skills that you’ve learned and to learn new skills. I’ve just been up to Scotland for two weeks on exercise working with submarines from many nations."

I get to see the world

Pete also explained just how much travelling he gets to do as part of the RNR. He told us that he’d been to Norway, Madeira, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia and Dubai to name just a few. Although you do get some downtime in these places too, it’s not always possible.

Making a difference

When we asked Pete what was the best thing about being in the RNR, he revealed that being part of a team and making a real difference was the most rewarding part. “I like going away and getting acceptance from the regulars,” he said.

“If I do my job well then you get that feel good factor of coming away having done a good job. I enjoy that and to understand that I've made a difference.

“The camaraderie is brilliant too.”

It's very rewarding

Pete says that “if you put in the effort and commitment, you'll reap a massive amount of benefit from it".

New improved: The latest Ecosport (Ford) When Ford released their first Ecosport in 2012, the 'compact SUV' from Britain's favourite carmaker got mixed reviews. Criticised for some clunky design features, Ford set about fine-tuning their mini SUV with some extra bells and whistles. When Yahoo UK got behind the wheel of the updated Ecosport, we found it was a smooth, comfortable crossover, which was fun to drive. The most noticeable change to the revised Ecosport is the removal of the ugly boot door-mounted spare wheel. It improves the vehicle's look and will make drivers used to smaller Fords more comfortable.

One element which did disappoint slightly was the Ecosport's 'infotainment' system. The mobile phone-esque display, despite having iPhone connectivity, felt dated for a 2016 vehicle.

Audi recently gathered several of the most iconic names in sound to discuss the future of the music industry, creating a symposium they named Audi-O-Rama.

Electronic music icon Jean-Michel Jarre, so forward-thinking throughout his career (he practically invented the concept of multimedia concerts) was there to discuss how the modern music industry needs to change.

How do you feel about the music industry?

Music has never generated so much money, with the authors gaining so little. Step by step the music industry made mistake after mistake.

The first dark move was the CD era. Then the fact that the industry that created pirate radio wanted to put pirates in jail 25 years later. Then when the industry was dying, Apple came along and said they were the saviours. Steve Jobs said he was the saviour of the industry, and it got even worse.

Now Spotify is valued at $4 billion, we are virtually shareholders in the company, but what we get at the end of the year is the equivalent to the price of a pizza, without anchovies.

If we’re talking about the future of music, we need to create a new business model for music. And beyond music - for movies, for photographs, for books.

I’m not pessimistic, but we have to make noise. We should send a clear message. It’s not a problem for the niche musicians in Europe and America, sitting on their pot of gold. It’s far beyond this..

It’s a problem involving every family in the world. In every family, you have a father, a mother, a brother, a sister. [That might be] a filmmaker, a photographer, a musician who is not going to be able to live their dream. They’ll have a job on the side and end up giving up. This is something we have to address.

This is beyond the idea of rights and money, it’s a philosophical and social concept about what intellectual property means. It’s one of the big challenges of the 21st century.

People now make their own playlists from lots of different albums. Is the album as an art form still important for artists?

There’s been a revival of vinyl. People are discovering again how important it is that music lasts. We are also living in a world where we’re in constant zapping mode on the internet, where we have the focus time of two minutes on YouTube, but we can also watch hours of ‘True Detective’ without sleeping. So our relationship with our cultural content is changing. It is up to the artist to create a piece of music that can last for eight hours.

You pioneered performance as a key element of electronic music…

Rock music was designed and devised as performance, for playing music and sharing music. Electronic music was the reverse - it was designed and devised in studios, so it was a problem putting it on stage. People were hiding behind their synthesisers for two hours, it wasn’t the sexiest thing in life.

And people were listening to music everywhere, in the car, in the street with the first Walkman, and they were listening to music at home. So people were starting to go to concerts to share a visual experience, to get some kind of visual correspondence with artists they like.

Donald Trump's campaign typically kicks off his rallies with a playlist of bombastic pop hits. Wednesday's rally was in large part no different. Only this time, the music was accompanied by a trio of children singing and dancing to an original song dedicated to the Republican presidential front-runner himself. "Cowardice, are you serious? Apologies for freedom — I can't handle this! When freedom rings, answer the call!" they blared. "On your feet, stand up tall! Freedom's on our shoulders, USA! Enemies of freedom face the music. Come on boys, take them down!" The group, which calls itself the USA Freedom Kids, was formed by Jeff Popick, a Trump supporter whose 8-year-old daughter, Alexis, is one of its members. "Donald Trump far and away is the No. 1 guy to protect our freedoms. And we need that because we're coming off the heels of a guy who doesn't even get the concept," Popick told Business Insider in a phone interview on Thursday. Popick himself wrote the lyrics for the Trump tribute song. He said it was originally written about US Army Gen. George Patton, whom he revered since he first saw the 1970 biopic, "Patton."

(Rex) After watching Trump's campaign-announcement speech in June, the self-described band-manager and lyricist said he was inspired to make a more contemporary alteration to the song on the fly. "I was watching when Donald Trump announced his candidacy, and he talked about the need for a strong military. And I remember him saying that, 'We're going to find the next Gen. George Patton," Popick said. "When Donald Trump said that, I was inspired to make it even more contemporary than it already was, and make it more about Donald Trump." Popick has major ambitions for the group, whose three main members are under the age of 12. Those kids have been working together for about six months after Popick and a former "Kidz Bop" employee assembled the group together during casting calls in South Florida.

The group is currently in the studio recording covers of classics like "America The Beautiful" and "Grand Old Flag," and has shot a music video inspired by the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. But Popick said the group is focusing most on recording re-interpretations of older patriotic songs set to what he described as a combination of "electronic dance music, hip-hop, and dub-step," an EDM subgenre. Popick said he first reached out to the Trump campaign, concerned that he could be sued over the song. Instead, they began a dialogue with the campaign that eventually led the USA Freedom Kids to open for Trump at his Wednesday-night rally. Asked about whether the children's families were concerned about the political nature of the lyrics, Popick said the parents of the other children in the band were "very supportive" of the his decision to dedicate the song to Trump, and were Trump supporters themselves.
