i beat myself up for not knowing enough about my special interests a lot but then i remember the average person off the street has no idea what the carboniferous is and i feel better
are you really bad at it or are you in "good at it" spaces
"are you really bad at it or are you in 'good at it' spaces" has derailed so much self-hate since I read it
this is a load bearing sentence in my psyche and I can't believe it's only 2 months old
you gotta have freaks and gross weirdos in your life itâs imperative to understanding the truth of humanity

Danny is in Gotham (yes, that Gotham, different universe, long story) to finish his education before moving on with his lifeâor afterlifeâand eventually ascending to High King status. Itâs a good reveal AU. He still has his parents. He still has his friends. Clockwork just strongly suggested that if he wanted to rule the Infinite Realms one day, maybe he should get some cross-dimensional academic experience first.
So now heâs here.
The problem? Everyone is rich. Not âmy dad owns a companyâ rich. More like âwe have generational trauma and private islandsâ rich. Danny tries being friendly. Smiles. Makes conversation. Offers help with homework. It does absolutely nothing. These people only care about connections.
Which would be funnyâif it werenât so isolatingâbecause they have no idea he is, objectively, the single most powerful networking opportunity in the multiverse.
So yeah. Heâs a little lonely.
Enter Damian.
One of Damianâs brothers (who will not be named but absolutely thinks heâs hilarious) jokes that Damian has never had a normal civilian friendship in his life. That if he had to, he wouldnât even know where to start. He offhandedly gestures at Danny like, there, that one looks harmless.
Itâs a joke.
Unfortunately, Damian takes it as a challenge.
Not because Danny is a âtarget.â He isnât. Damian just fully decides he will prove he can form a normal, healthy, civilian friendship. Out of spite.
There are misunderstandings, but somehow, despite everything, they start⌠getting along.
And Damian, internally victorious, decides to present Danny to his family as evidence that he can, in fact, maintain a normal friendship.
Danny is delightful.
He charms Alfred. He debates with Tim. He listens to Bruce. He somehow gets Jason to laugh. He and Dick vibe immediately. He treats Damian like an equal without even trying.
For months, the consensus is clear:
Danny is the only normal person at this table.
And then they find his admission essay.
Titled:
âWhy Clowns Are Not to Be Given Human Rights.â
Jason has found his new bible
you guys are so right, I should have added the best part

the role of the person in the passenger seat is not only navigator but secretary as well. you have to type up the drivers messages to random ladies on facebook about cbd cream & google whether that billy joel song was the theme song for that show or not
you also have to provide a henchmans disdainful scowl at whoever the driver is flipping off in the target parking lot
other assorted roles may include
retrieval team for objects in the backseat
custodian of the parking garage tickets
"All clear my way"
en-route dining concierge
announcing "Horses!" when there are horses
Don't forget the Tommy Gun
You should never forget the Tommy Gun
got a crick in my neck and a frog in my throat and a chip on my shoulder and a stick up my ass and now you're gonna stand there puttin words in my mouth? haven't I been through enough?
humiliating to be attracted to a conventionally attractive person. I thought I was a more sensitive and refined pervert than this
Damian, walking out the manor door in civvies with Purpose and a katana while his siblings watch in concern
Dick: uh, hey, baby bat, where ya off to?
Damian: I am attending an execution
Tim, looking up from his laptop for the first time in 6 hours: what
Steph: in civvies? I get not going as robin but at least wear your assassin gear
Tim: THATS WHAT WEâRE WORRIED ABOUT?
Steph: well yeah that stuffs meant to get blood on it
Damian: it is not the execution of anything that would bleed.
Dick: explain that
Damian, sighing with all the annoyance he can muster at his curious siblings: Do you recall my partner in the school project?
Duke: uh, you mean Danny? The teen dad transfer who you said set up a Prince and Princess Club with the kids in his apartment building, and hosts tea parties where he gives them political problems about unicorns and mermaids to discuss over scones?
Damian: yes. This Thursday the issue was a stuffed giraffe who brought tribute to the council, but the tribute snacks contained nuts. Danny tells me it was originally an attempt to make them refuse the snacks as a group, as the stuffed giraffe knowingly snubbed some of their members. But then it was pointed out that if the allergic children ate the snacks, there would be great medical risk, and the scenario escalated to an assassination attempt.
Dick: âŚso theyâre executing the stuffed giraffe.
Damian: yes. It is good to see the young trained early. Now if you will excuse me, I promised to be there. It is my duty as one trained with the sword to ensure Lord Longneck is dispatched properly for his attempts on Princess Bridget of apartment 114 and Prince Hunter of the top floorâs lives. Good day.
Tim: what the fuck
Steph, cackling: the kids are alright
I'm in a little local cafe and the women behind the counter started griping to each other, "Oh Christ, Stephen's back again," "It's him, is it? I thought he'd stopped coming," "It's definitely him, look, it's bloody Stephen on a Thursday morning," "Do you want me to get rid of him or are you going to do it?" and so I was peering outside, trying to spot this nightmare customer, this pestilence of a person, this pox upon the cafe trade, and then one of the women from behind the counter ran outside, clapping two trays together loudly and yelling "GET OUT OF IT, STEPHEN!" and it turns out that Stephen is an absolutely gigantic fuck-off seagull who hangs around outside, menacing people for crumbs

"You will often be subjected to uncomfortable situations in public and you should learn to navigate that" and "if you play your music out loud in a public hike then the other hikers should be allowed to hunt you for sport" are two sentiments that can and should co-exist
word on the street is if you suffer in just the right way for just long enough youll be rewarded
Danny gets to choose his royal title, and he thinks very hard about it. He examines historical ghost kings, how their titles reflected their rule.
He decided he wanted to be a little bit silly with it.
Now, all across reality, occultists and demons and anyone who was in-the-know on the Infinite Realms was privy to the knowledge of the new king.
King Phantom, The Child Killer
Meaning: The Child who killed the last king, the child who can and will kill to defend his people- and his people was Everyone In Reality. He was the King of All. He will not allow anyone to come to harm, and he will not allow anyone to conduct that harm.
Danny knows very well what people will assume his title means.
Heâs counting on it.
Every so often a zealous megalomaniac decides they need the Ghost King to give them power, and what would the Child Killer want?
A child to kill.
He would never be able to stop people from trying to summon him, but he could control what they tried to offer to him. He could guarantee that only those who summon him were scum.
Anyone who chose to offer a living breathing child to what they assumed was a malevolent god of destruction and murder clearly wasnât worth the breath it would take to ask âwhat do you want from me?â
So whenever Danny arrives to his summonings, faced with one or more innocent terrified faces, he wordlessly wraps them safely in a blanket made of stars..
Covering their eyes as he smites everyone in the room, leaving behind scorched earth and shadows of men who really Didnât Have Any Idea Who. They. Were. Fucking. With.
When the Justice League catches wind of a dangerous entity called The Child Killer who slaughters cultists and disappears with the child sacrifices, they decide they donât need any more information. Digging would waste time, and time was everything when a child was missing.
What they didnât know was that Danny was feeding the children, clothing them, healing them- of course he would like to bring them home, but they donât have any.
Each child was trafficked out of foster care by the cultists, or was being abused by their parent who was a cultist.
Even if they had never been taken into the circle, they would have surely died.
And no âheroâ would have ever known.
No. Danny would not be returning the children, not unless they asked for it. Not unless they could come up with a safe place for them to go.
Not unless the children wanted to leave.
Hereâs a community reminder that the New York Post is owned by Rupert Murdoch, owner of Fox News, and is generally considered to be an arm of the far rightâs propaganda machine.
They just do a slightly better job of pretending theyâre centrist or liberal than Fox News, because their goal is not to sway conservatives, but to sway everyone to the left of the far right.
They're really trying to tan-suit-obama him, eh?
I think everyone with expendable formal wear and at a low risk for drowning should wade in a swimming pool at the shallow end and take a photo.
like the betrayalâs always going to be worse if they cared about you and it didnât matter. someone discards you because they didnât give a shit, then you can be angry about that, you can feel vindicated in that, you can get over it. but if they can look you in the eyes and say âI love you. I would make the same choice again.â You will never sleep peacefully again, is all.
âI thought they cared about me, but they were lying this whole time.â <- tired. boring. removes all the nuance of this relationship to make it easier to move on from.
âI thought they cared about me, and I was right, and every minute they were there for me, every time they said they were proud, every laugh we shared leaning against each other bruised and breathless, all of it was real. and they still left me behind. They could put their love aside. I couldnât.â <- insane. will never leave you alone. reminds you that even the worst people are still people and can still care about even the ones they hurt the most and that undoes neither the harm nor the love.

The time this woman is taking to educate is much appreciated!
I think the thing that annoys me most about AI on a personal, day to day, level is what it has done to grammar checkers. If you've never done a lot of editing, or used to 5+ years ago but haven't really in the last couple years, I can't even begin to describe how fucking BAD this shit has gotten. And as an author it is EXHAUSTING.
I just want to catch spelling errors and accidental double spaces and repeated phrases and whenever I use the wrong too/to or affect/effect and shit. But no. They've shoved AI up the ass of every grammar checking software out there and now they all fucking suck and make the most random, obnoxious, nonsensical suggestions.
And yeah, I can ignore all the times it's trying to get me to cut out any semblance of my own voice, or shove things into the wrong tense, or make the most random suggestions on comma usage. But if it's getting all that WRONG, what is it just straight up missing that I SHOULD be correcting? What real spelling and grammar errors are still lurking in there?
"Use Libre Office."
I get why people keep saying this (and other versions of it like "Use Adobe alternatives" and "Use Google product alternatives."). But here's the problem: I do not create in isolation. Even my own 100% personal projects are getting sent to other people whether it's editors or printers or beta readers and unless every single person in that train is using the same products, things can get wonky.
Libre Office and Word handle formatting differently on the back end, which can completely break documents if you move them back and forth between the two. So if I write in Libre Office but my beta readers are still using Word, when I send them a manuscript for review there's a good chance things won't look right and my beta reader will not actually be reviewing what I sent them.
Industry standards are industry standards FOR A REASON. Having everyone on the same workflow can be crucial to getting things done effectively and correctly without creating a lot of extra work. And those things are not going to change overnight, as much as we might want them to.
:| :| :|
Yeah, Word, let me just leave this whole chunk of dialogue without the closing quotation marks. That's the thing to do. How dare I have two punctuation marks in a row. It's not like that's how closing quotation marks fucking work.
I am going to light something on fire.
And you know, for young writers, this has got to be so detrimental just from the perspective of opening your document and seeing a million corrections that, frankly, don't need to be there. If you're a young writer you're likely not going to have the background knowledge to know what is and isn't a good suggestion, you're just going to see a document that makes it look like you made every mistake possible so clearly you must be a terrible, stupid writer and should just give up.
