Herbie Hancock - The Jazz Workshop, Boston, Massachusetts, March 22, 1973
Last week, The Heat Warps blog posted an especially killer 1972 tape of Miles Davis at Paulās Mall in Boston, which shared a location with the Jazz Workshop. It was so nice that I started digging out various other WBCN broadcasts recorded around the same time at the same address. There are a bunch to choose from. And for the next few days, weāre going to listen to a few of them! Hey, Iām in charge here.Ā
First up is Milesā erstwhile bandmate Herbie Hancock. Herbie and his Mwandishi band were just about the unleash Sextant on the world ā and thatās certainly the vibe of this way-out performance. With synth madman Dr. Patrick Gleason in tow (plus a dude named Scorch on congas), the group takes the Boylston Street basement club into the outer reaches of the cosmos. The groove remains strong, however, with Buster Williams and Billy Hart laying down a thick and greasy foundation for everyone else to blast off from. Amazing jams. By the end of the year, though, Herbie would be moving further towards the funk with the Headhunters. Important question: During this New England trip, did Hancock drive over to the ARP factory in Newton Upper Falls to check out the latest and greatest synths? The odds are good.Ā
