I used to think that a guy telling me he “likes Asian girls” was a compliment. Like it was a +1 Point for Team Asian.

I used to think my being brown, dark-skinned, was a bad thing. That somehow there was no way I could be Asian if I’m brown. I used to use skin lighteners a lot.

I used to think playing the ‘schoolgirl’ motif was cute and sexy. As if appealing to pedophilc urges of some guy was healthy. Or being a white guy’s cute, foreign play thing or girlfriend. 

I let men have their way with me in bed, in school, in relationships, in life. I thought being submissive was just part of the job of being an Asian woman. I played supporting or recurring character in my own life story and for a very long time… I hated myself for it. 

I never knew the effects of playing a caricature until I started reading these submissions and posts on living with internalized and externalized racism. And then it got worse when I started reading other blogs about consent and sexuality and things I never really thought of; things I let slide because I thought by doing so I was making the people taking advantage of me, happy. 

One day I had this panic attack when I realized what I let guys do to me; thinking it’s alright for them to treat me like we’re living in some violent hentai. Thinking it’s alright for them to say it’s sexy when I say things in another language in bed. Thinking it’s alright that they lash out and I keep coming back like a twisted anime or Asian drama show. 

I hated what I became and have since then become more recluse than ever. Unable to express what I go through as the psychological result of uncovering all the things I buried from myself; I write poetry. I write prose. I take every chance I get to talk about abuse and racism and violence against women. I pretend I’m a better person for it.
