Benjamin OâDell better known as just Ben was born into the classic New England life in Portland, Maine. He grew up with his mom and dad, two siblings, and of course the family dog. They spent winters playing in the snow and summers at the beach. Every family however has that one thing that makes them imperfect however, and that was Benâs role. Ben was what most people called the problem child. Lots of phone calls home for disruptive behavior in school, getting in trouble for pranking his neighbors, and bothering his siblings. This however didnât stop his parents from loving him any less, it just made them motivated to find him something to do.
The OâDell parents tried to introduce Ben to lots of things when he was a child. Sports, drawing, gardening, none of it seemed to appeal to him, not until his mom took him to his first piano lesson. He fought it at first, but once he was a few lessons in he actually really loved it. Music would eventually turn into a lifelong passion, and he would learn to play many different instruments as the years went on.
In high school Benâs usually harmless but annoying behavior turned into something dangerous for himself, and sometimes the people around him. He started getting into fist fights at school, drinking became a habit, and parties became his second home. This was also the time he met his first love Heather. They met in a music class. The connection was instant. Soon enough the pair was inseparable, and stayed together for all four years of high school. The two split after graduation as Heather was moving to Boston for college, and Ben had no plans for his future.
Ben took the breakup pretty hard and threw himself deep into a rabbithole of booze and drugs. He consumed anything he could get his hands on, it didnât matter what it was. It was a lot easier for him to feel okay if he was not sober. He cut off contact with his family and anyone else who showed an ounce of concern, it was unlike him. During this time Ben spent months living out of his car in a Walmart parking lot. His older sister, Courtney, figured this out and would check in on him to make sure he was okay. One day when Courtney was doing one of her check-ins she noticed Ben slumped over, almost lifeless. She had a bad feeling and called 911. It turned out Ben had overdosed that day. After spending some time in the hospital Ben went back to living with his parents. He used this time to attempt to get clean, but it was a challenge. Eventually his family agreed that rehab would be best for him.
Quitting drugs was a long journey for Ben, but he managed to do it after years of trying. He decided to take some college classes online too so he could find himself a career in writing. If he couldnât do music full time, writing was the next best thing. It took him a long time, but soon Ben had earned his bachelorâs in English. He picked up some gigs as a freelance writer and it just stuck. Eventually he would like to write a book, but he hasnât found the inspiration yet.
About four years ago Ben moved to Merrock. He needed a change in scenery and the small town was perfect. He has since settled into a two bedroom apartment downtown, and took in a stray cat he found wandering the streets. He has stayed clean, but will enjoy the occasional beer from time to time. Ben enjoys the quiet town and plans to live in Merrock for a long time.
