i think it comes down to the shortcomings of empowerment feminism. we recognize that there is a gender problem in media and instead of being honest about our preference for male-centric narratives and reading/creating stories that are about women, we settle for the fleeting feeling of empowerment in representation. which is also why so many women will say x male character is such a lesbian iconnnn when that’s literally not true at all and these people don’t give a fuck about actual lesbian characters or lesbian stories. it’s either settling for superficial empowerment and calling it a day or just completely ignoring the existence of women characters because it inconveniences their devotion to their favorite male characters. and then they have the audacity to claim they want more complicated women in their stories. stop lyingggg
