Heyo! I'm the RTA. Miss? Mr? Mx? You decide.
This is a blog about the WRTA, the regional transit system for Worcester, Massachusetts, and the surrounding areas. It consists only of busses (and a stop on MBTA and Amtrak train lines), but damn do those busses go!
Expect transitposting, Worcesterposting, and perhaps some Massachusettsblogging at large.

had a dream that jerma985 for whatever reason became a huge celebrity in worcester, massachusetts. yes i know he's from boston. every restaurant had a framed picture of him and every dunkin donuts had a bunch of pictures of him, like all the wall decor was photos of jerma. there were photos of him on poles and all the hospitals (we have like a billion here) had a photo of him in the various common rooms, something to calm down anxious patients. UMass and WPI students had tiny jerma shrines as a joke and ironically prayed to jerma before exams. Also photos ranged from nice looking ones you get when you google 'jerma' and meme ones like the sus image and him coughing weird. restaurants made jerma themed food (not really themed but more like they just named it after him) and people named their pets after jerma (no kids. cause this was all semi ironic). jerma visited one day and he needed an escort and people were on the streets- not just young people who knew who he was but older folks as well- celebrating his visit like it was a parade. he also showed on stream the kind of fame he was getting via going on google maps and social media and seeing all the jerma love he was getting in worcester. jerma didnt know why worcester was treating him like this but after questioning it for a bit he decided to just roll with it. he gave a speech at his visit (i think in the park in downtown) but words are always garbled in dreams so i didnt understand what he said, but he definitely said something like 'i dont know why this is happening but im not gonna question it' and doing that laugh he does when he's bewildered

I am trying so hard to enjoy Kevin Can Fu*k Himself, and do indeed think it's an interesting and cool show despite being a bit baffled at some of the writing/story choices, but like...why did it have to be set in Worcester?
Like don't get me wrong. It is very cool to see a less well-known place that you love very much represented in media. But, like...just...
As someone from Worcester, their portrayal of the city is so odd that it genuinely breaks my immersion sometimes. I don't even mean in a "there are places made up for the show" way, it's just sort of like they looked up "Worcester deep cuts," filmed on one or two streets in the city, and called it a day.
Like. Ok. You probably wouldn't really know this unless you've been here but Worcester actually has a pretty distinct appearance at the street level. Like, outside of downtown, it's pretty much all a signature mix of mill buildings, thin two-story apartment houses, and colonials.

They get this right, like twice maybe? And every so often the main character walks by these, like, gentrified building blocks that just really aren't commonplace here. It's not that Worcester ISN'T gentrified in some areas it's just that, ime, it's pretty localized.
But despite this, the characters also consistently talk about the city as if it's, like, some podunk backwater town?? As though it's like nowheresville and its big events are things like harvest festivals? As though coffee shops get no traffic? These people do know it's the second largest city in an area of 6 entire states, right? The Wonder Years are literally playing here next month.
And it's unfair to call them on this but they probably could have done well to check if the street names they reference exist.
Also when I say "looked up Worcester deep cuts" I mean that this show is the reason I know that the Worcester Hot Dog Safari exists (yes, really), but also they refer to the DCU Center by a name it hasn't gone by in over 20 years. I was watching with my younger sister and she literally had no idea what the Centrum was. I only knew because I remember when the name change happ fuck I'm old next topic-
Honestly the thing that sticks out to me the most BY FAR is that much of this can be explained by the idea that the writers conceive of Worcester as Boston, But Smaller. You can see it in the Sox memorabilia everywhere, the staunch Yankees opposition (not that this doesn't exist in Worcester but like the Sox are not a core part of our identity like they are over there), the random shout-outs to Irish heritage, indeed as mentioned above some of the street layouts, and, most obviously, most distractingly...
The accents.
Ohhhh the accents.
Ok this is actually a critique I have of the show itself: the accents are. Bad. Inconsistent, sometimes dropped entirely and when it doesn't it sounds like the direction the actors were given was "vaguely Massachusetts" or "Boston, but not quite."
Worcester does have a distinct city accent. I literally make a joke about it in the blog title! It's a state meme but nobody actually commits enough to the bit to do it right!! Not even for a premium-channel television show!!
*Shrek voice* They don't even say bubbler...
Anyway disclaimer I enjoy the show I do I really do this has just been bugging me and I needed to scream it into the void.

If the MBTA were truly woke it would have a rainbow line that goes to Northampton and Provincetown and the trains would be trainsgender.
Yeah a worcester line college connector and a tip of the cape extension of the flyer would both be fantastic
There already kind of IS a worcester line college connector. Our friends at the PVTA run the B79, which is a shuttle bus expressly meant to connect UMass Amherst students to Boston via the Worcester line, stopping at union station at intervals that coincide with certain runs of that train.
It's not Northampton but it IS in the 5 college area. Which I think counts enough.
