(Warnings : Dark themes, violence, mentions of death)
βAgent L, are you in position? Over.β
βYes, boss. Loading bullets into the rifle. Over.β
The room was dark, being present underneath a farmhouse, its existence unknown to everyone but a handful of people. It was meagrely furnished by just a chair and a long table. The table had a bunch of strange devices, some in progress while some awaiting to be used. A man, in his 40s, at the chair, was currently using the walkie - talkie to transmit the orders while his eyes were fixed on the screen displaying a scene in a party at the village mansion.
'Stand by, L. You got twenty minutes to shootβ. He spoke through the walkie - talkie. βThen, jump-β
β-into S's cab. Then, drive to the docks and wait for the others to join. I remember, boss. Overrrr.β The young lass cut the man off and sassily replied.
The man smiled. He trusted Lβs aim and presence of mind. She would never make any mistake and can manage herself in case she falls into a tight spot.Β
βHow about you, F?β His attention on another of his accomplice. βWhat is the scenario? Over.β
Amidst a chatter of several voices in the background, a drawling voice answered, 'All fine here. A glass wardrobe going in for the auction. Target placing the highest bidder. Whew! She is one hella rich woman. Overβ.
βS? Over.β The boss inquired.
βAll in position. Waiting for L. Overβ S replied instantly, as a roar of an engine in the background confirmed his prep.
βOoooβ¦β¦Sβ L suddenly jeered over the walkie - talkie, βHow was your date? Was she pretty? Or hot as fire?β
S chuckled but before he could answer her, the boss cut him off. βFocus, everybody. This oneβs a golden goose. The biggest job we ever got. 40 millions, by jove! Keep your eyes and ears open. Report any suspicious activity, F. I will warn you when it is time, L. Over.β
And then, silence fell over the room once again as everyone laid into their positions. Only the sounds of the monitor echoed in the empty room where the man had two videos of the secret cameras installed at the party hall, playing side by side. One was of the target, the wife of a rich businessman while the other was ofβ¦β¦β¦F. Yes, he did not trust F and his ideas. He never did. But he could not shake him off, either. He knew too much and also he really had sharp combat skills and the ability to weasel into any tough facility. He indeed was a very useful member of The Robins.Β
The Robinβs - the most notorious and mysterious gang in the whole valley, with 15 targets murdered and 30 robbing cases. They four were enough to bring this whole wave of terror in the region. Lβs sharp eyes could aim even a small bird flying over a great distance, Sβs driving and combat skills could bring down the mightiest and the bulkiest of opponents and Fβs hacking skill could even crack into the CIA data panel. At last, he, Mark, was the kingpin. The one who took the jobs and managed the attacks.
Butβ¦β¦all that worried him currently was Fβs recent change in behaviour. He seemed to be acting quite odd. He even βaccidentallyβ shot L in their last consignment. Fortunately, the girl moved before the bullet hit her. Minor, the incident was but it was Fβs intention that worried him. F disliked L since Mark first introduced her to the gang members for god knows what reason. The girl, the most recent addition just 2 months ago, was young and was surprisingly sharp and quick on her feet. She never gave any chance for him to complain. Mark himself made sure of her selection. Stalked her for two months and even put her through vigorous training and several tests and she surplussed each one of them! And now, ten kills within three months without any miss! One helluva kid, she was!Β
Beep Beep. Fifteen minutes left............
Mark nodded at the timer and again resumed his thoughts. He knew F since his early years. The man's brain and sense of mind was excellent even in his 50βs but he could not point out the reason for his grudge against the lass. He did mention L being suspicious and familiar when Mark brought her to the team. But it must have been a mistake. Her history and origins were thoroughly checked by his dealer.
Nobody in the gang knew anything about each other except their initials and skills, not even Mark himself. Except of course their names while he bought their informations. He usually gets their information checked by a trusted dealer who trades him information and just disappears. Besides, why would he even bother knowing their backstory. What he wanted was talent. Skills. Men who would follow all his commands. They all are first brainwashed and then the best from them are trained personally by him. F was indeed a dodging character from the beginning but his hacking and combat skills were superb that he had to pardon several of his elementary mistakes and temper.Β
L was on the other hand a meek little thing living in a vile part of the city. She was totally out of place among criminals and murderers wandering around in that part of the city. And maybe that was the reason of her sharp conscious of her surrounding and excellent presence of mind to get out of βsituationsβ. Well, though doubtful of her feeble strength, he did his best and glad he did, to raise such a fine commando. A little firecracker, she was.
Thus, again a pang of worry and apprehension came across his mind. No, he cannot afford to lose such a valuable asset just because of Fβs personal dislike. Should he interrogate him and directly ask about his sudden change of behaviour? Yes, he should and he will right after this task at hand.Β
Beep Beep. Ten minutes leftβ¦β¦.
Yes, everything is going smoothly according to the plan. As the wife gets up, the glass window would shatter with the lady falling down with a bullet straight through her chest and blood spewing out all over the floor. F would then go and pick up her purse. And with an excuse of calling the police, he would go down the docks. L and S would already will be there by then and so would Mark himself. Then they would board the yatch and sail to the nearby island, to the recruiter. What was his name again? Mike? Landon? Sam?
With a last glance at the timer, he walked towards the cabinet and searched for the contract. Ah! There it was. Daniel, CEO of the Loris and Co.. He never heard of such garments company, must be another newly started company. But the man claimed it to be one of the topmost brand in the recent times. Well, anyway, it didnβt matter. L said she used to buy dresses of that brand. So, maybe it just manufactures womenβs clothes.
As he made his way back towards the desk, Mark absentmindedly, knocked over a few files placed nearby. He clicked his tongue, irritated by the mess and swiftly tried to gather the files. But one of them caught his attention - Lβs file. Why was it here still? Didn't that wretched dealer burn it after their last meeting. Well, it was a long time since they used this particular warehouse.
He bought it over and started reading it. Half of the data was hidden as per the gangβs rule. As he read his eyes hovered over her picture. Beautiful, she was. Even the police officers got lost in her mesmerising eyes in the time of the diamond robbery as she efficiently distracted them. But what was her full name? He heard it once when she was first brought to him.
His fingers went onto the keyboard as his eyes searched the time.
Eight minutes left...........
His fingers swiftly went over the keys as he searched for the first recorded interrogation of the girl. (Next time, he sees the dealer he would break those crooked teeth of his for failing to dispose all these) After, two long minutes of scrolling, he clicked on the recording...........
The video showed him sitting luxuriously on the couch in the dark room as two henchmen brought and threw a fragile figure before him before exiting the room. Mark smiled as he remembered those frightened innocent eyes pleaded him to let her go. Her clothes dirty and damp sticked to her white flawless skin as she nervously shifted on the floor. At first glance, Mark thought her to be one of those frail girls the dealers bought to him who were as soft a flower which would crumble with only one harsh strike. But just like the phrase, Lβs appearance was not to be judged. As he continued to watch the video, Mark reminisced the scene. As he made way towards the table at the corner, the girl snatched the knife beside him and boldly positioned it under his chin. Mark, then 20 years in the profession, skilfully twisted and tackled her back to her former position. He was impressed by the reckless but brave act of hers. He chuckled and accepted her.Β
Beep Beep. Three minutes left.............
Mark smiled as the video went by. The timer brought him back to the present time as it chimed. As he made to move back towards the walkie - talkie, his eyes fell on a strange thing in the still video. He replayed and was surprised at the revelation. In the recording, as soon as he turned his back after calling the guards to take her away, the girl swiftly moved something from her hand to the lining of her dress. As he zoomed, he couldn't hold back a gasp to find that it was a - microphone!Β
The team often stayed in the secluded farmhouses where no one was permitted to go out except Mark, let alone maintain contact with the outer world, unless strictly necessary. But this microphone in the video was an evidence of Lβs treachery. Then was she in contact with someone throughout these 2 months? Maybe, F was correct at last.
Anger bubbled in him as he thought over the surprising revelation of his most trusted and valuable member to be the mole in his party. He was determined to show her the vile consequences of messing with him. He trusted her and placed her in many secretive missions and even shared several confidential information with her, only to know that she was the betrayer from the start? Anguish at that thought, he still thought to gain more knowledge of this demoness. He searched her picture in several data bases, profiles and panels that the old dealer filled into the device last time.Β
At last, the result materialised in the screen when Markβs eyes widened with shock -Β
Liana De Savio.
Senior officer.
FBI.
Mark refused to believe it but her picture with every other detail in that database betrayed him. The police had sent her as a spy to report all their activities. He sat there still, holding his forehead with both hands.
Suddenly, his spiralling chain of thoughts were interrupted by a female voice.
'20 secs, boss. Standing by. Overβ
That familiar voice that used to fill him with assurance now brought out displease and anger. But no, now is not the time to let the emotions take over. He has to complete this first and then see that twerp. He cannot afford to mess this assignment.
With a dummy calmness, he spoke into the device βAll good,F? Overβ
βYes, we are going into the dinning area. Target packing her purse. I am just behind her. Any moment to strike. Over.β F answered.
All this time, F may have recognised her, being an ex-convict himself. Perhaps, it may also be the actual reason of Lβs unwillingness to partner with him during the raids.Β
Yes, the wife stood up. F advanced towards her and brought her into a conversation to keep her into position for L to take a clear shot. As the timer rang, Mark and the others held their breath for the immediate response.
But the shot never cameβ¦β¦.
The wife was called by another lady and she walked to the other end of the room, leaving a surprised F.
βWhat happened, L? Why didnβt you shoot? Over.β Mark bellowed. Awaiting her voice, he instead received a dreaded silence.
βL? L? Are you alright? RESPOND FOR GODβS SAKE.β
βNo need to lose your voice, boss. Calm downβ Lβs sharp voice reached his ears but not from the walkie - talkieβ¦β¦
Mark sprung back to witness L behind him with a gun pointed straight at him. Standing there speechless, he could hear cries of F and S through the walkie-talkie as they were being arrested by police officers.
βNo use of trying to escape. The police has surrounded the whole area. The game is over, bossβ¦β¦or should I say Mark?β Liana smirked.
Mark widened his eyes. No one knew his real name. Just the dealer and F, from their early years.
βYou worked with us and is this how you reply us, you ungrateful brat?β He spat, βYou even killed several people, innocentsβ.
Liana giggled and said βHow gullible and naive you are, Mark! Those people still breathe safe and sound in this world. Those were acts. Fake assignments given to you so that you choose me to show my skills. Those were to help me come closer to you till you start trusting me. See, how easily I did it. I just had one problem - F. He recognised me from the bureau where I was first posted as a rookie. But anyway I did my work. I WON!!β
Yes, she is right! She won! He lost! He lost from a petty girl and this was the biggest insult ever. Though somewhere in his heart, he admired her courage and intelligence. She indeed did her job smoothly without a hitch. A JOB WELL DONE.
