Something neuroscience-y that helps with prose: attention is selective. A character will not notice everything in a room. They will notice what matters to their goal, fear, desire, training, wound, or obsession. A jealous character notices hands. a hungry character notices food. A soldier notices exits. A lonely character notices pairs. Description becomes character when attention has a bias.
Okay but teacher Grace on Erid having very little say in which kids get filtered into his class, though he is aware that the selection process is super specific and that most of the kids he gets are high performers with star academics and some even with influential parents. He isn't quite comfortable enough with Eridian culture yet to object to the selection process and make it more inclusive, however. That is, until he learns about the special needs kids.
Obviously, there are Eridian kids with special needs, and a few of them even filter into his classes. But one specific type of special needs kid has never shown up in his classes, and the only reason he even learned of the condition is because Rocky and Adrien's first pebble has the condition.
It's initially quite a struggle for them to deal with, and Grace sympathizes of course, because the child will apparently have huge learning and academic struggles and will likely never be able to live on their own. That is, until he learns the details of the disability.
Basically, it's a condition where the part of the Eridian brain that gives them their eidetic memory isn't fully developed, and so these kids just... can't remember things the way most eridians do. And in a culture where an eidetic memory is the norm, all things cater to that, so not having that is actually a massive disability.
But Grace is like, so... this kid just learns the same way a human does, or something like. Which is nothing new to him, though he is somewhat boggled at how much Rocky and Adrian struggle with their infant and their "slow" learning curve, even as far as initial developmental stages. Grace, on the other hand, simply treats the kid the same way he would a human infant, and Rocky and Adrien are impressed with his patience.
But, through this, it occurs to Grace that there must be other kids out there with this disability who likely aren't getting the attention and chances in life that they deserve, because Eridian culture is particularly hostile toward this disability, and actively views those with it as unable to function in regular society.
So Grace demands that a special course be put together where he teaches kids with this disability specifically. Rocky is hesitant, as most kids with this disability are home schooled and kind of... kept shut away. But Grace insists and as one of Erid's saviors, he gets what he wants eventually.
His first class is super small, maybe only three kids because so few parents were willing to advertise that their children have this disability. And because of the stigma around it, even those who agreed to it are super unsure and want to be present during the lessons, perhaps paranoid about the impression it will leave on Savior Grace, who is so accustomed to only teaching the most gifted students.
But Grace knows exactly how to deal with these kids. Some of them have varying degrees of function when it comes to their memory banks, which isn't so unlike teaching kids on earth. And so Grace is able to introduce all these tools and teaching techniques that were previously unheard of on Erid (though very normal on Earth) like having textbooks for reference with you at all times and having strategies that are less focused on memorization for understanding, and providing these kids with tools like calculators and teaching them the art of taking notes to look back on, etc etc.
Suddenly, with all these tools that most Eridians don't need, these kids are learning at a much faster rate, and succeeding with the help of all their little tools. And because so many normal eridians are ignorant of Grace's actual biology, it's shocking to them that Savior Grace doesn't have an eidetic memory either (shocking to everyone but Rocky anyway)--that his brain functions quite similarly in capacity to these "disabled" children.
Once this news gets around, suddenly there's more kids in his special classes, and there's all kinds of discourse being inflamed because the real reason these kids can't live on their own or function is lack of support from Eridian society.
If Savior Grace, who is well respected as a genius in his own right amongst the Eridians, can function so successfully, they why can't these kids?
I dunno, I just think it's an interesting premise.
You should only write in present tense with extreme caution.
not because it's bad or anything but because if you do it even once you're going to be editing the bits where you shifted tenses out of your writing for the rest of your life
if u write in present tense enough times in a row, you can switch this problem around & get confused when your present-tense narrator is talking abt something that happened in Their past. I recommend this bc it keeps u on ur toes

Cultural Insights of Our Own: Lessons From a Newly Decoded Digital Archive
Interplanetary Journal of Cultural Studies
Volume 16, Issue 3, Pages 322-340
Abstract
The recently decoded Internet Archive includes the digital artifact called “Archive of Our Own” (AO3) from early third millennium Earth. AO3 is unusually well backed up and therefore is presumed to contain some of the most significant -- perhaps even sacred -- texts of the time. In this paper we present our preliminary analysis of AO3 metadata, including new insights about the literature, gender and sexuality, religion, and scientific understanding of this historical era:
I. LITERATURE. We describe the cultural centrality of figures such as the Winchesters and Reader. We explore how they featured heavily in every dominant literature genre of the era, including Fluff, Angst, Hurt/Comfort, and Oral Sex.
II. GENDER AND SEXUALITY. We review the overwhelming evidence that male-male relationships were the most culturally significant sexual and romantic relationships, but we also show that it was a culture with an unusually broad set of sexual and gender roles. In particular, we highlight the unusual tripartite conceptualization of gender as including alpha, beta, and omega roles; we note the apparent prejudice against betas, illustrated in the prevalence of “no beta we die like men” and similar protest slogans.
III. RELIGION. We describe a newly discovered religious taboo: doves were a common sacrificial animal of the time, but they were forbidden from being eaten.
IV. SCIENCE. Finally, we present new insight about alternate universes. While previous scholars hypothesized that the scientists of Earth may have developed a correct early theory of the multiverse by the late second millennium, our analysis of AO3 presents evidence to the contrary. As late as the early third millennium, prevailing theories postulated highly specific universes, such as a universe in which everyone is in high school, or a universe contained within a coffee shop.
Taken together, these historical insights show that further investigation is warranted into the valuable documents stored within AO3, perhaps even going beyond the metadata to examine the full texts.
"So the whole ball pit was my idea. I wanted a ball pit."
God, this part...
But I feel like an asteroid. I feel like the asteroid that wiped out the dinosaurs. I was very, very guilty for years. I had to go to extensive therapy because I was like, “oh my god, I, Lochlan O'Neil, single-handedly destroyed fandom culture?”
She didn't she didn't she didn't. That wasn't it. She wasn't an asteroid.
She was the first skater that fell through the ice of Web 2.0.
I was also a teenager who found an amazing world, and My People, and friends I'd still talk to every day, on the internet. I spent years getting my mother to let me go to conventions and meet friends in distant cities. I started ambitious internet communities I didn't have the experience or skills to bring to fruition. I don't think there was a lot of difference between us, in a lot of ways. It's not that I was somehow smart or skilled or suave and she wasn't. She didn't have some awful planet-killing stink or velocity that she brought to the show.
The difference was this:
In 1994, when the Endless September began and the Internet felt perpetually full of stupid newbies, there were 20 million people online.
In 2001, when I got my first LiveJournal account, there were 500 million.
In 2012, when she joined Tumblr, there were 2.43 billion.
When I started out, and you joined a new messageboard or chatroom or mailing list, you had to introduce yourself to the community. Except in the biggest of websites, people expected to log onto the internet, read through all the new things that had been posted to their local bit of it, and then log off again. Older members took it upon themselves to greet the newbies and answer any questions they might have, directing them to the relevant community FAQs. People would say things like, "Oh yes, I remember you. This is only your second Thursday with us, right? I hope you have fun!"
I joined an Internet full of adults who got online through their jobs or their universities, one of the first wave of kids allowed to roam free. And the proportion of adults to kids kept steadily changing, but until DashCon, I don't think people understood how much. I remember a discussion that happened in early 2000s slash fandom, where the very true observation was made that in particular artistic ways, we had all agreed to suspend shame, which created a unique kind of space. As a community we could all admit that we were there to be embarrassingly enthusiastic in unusual ways about absolute nerd shit, and we understood that it wasn't life or death, it wasn't rocket surgery, but it also wasn't going to get broadcast onto the clouds and our bosses didn't know who we were. Everyone was (willing to act like) an adult, and we could hold the circle and create safety there.
That felt like a lot of geek spaces, then. Anime conventions, science fiction conventions, furry conventions, videogame stores, D&D meetups. Images were bulky and pixelated, video incredibly hard to move. When you got to a con, it was like a brief oasis of Weird that sheltered you and screened you from view, and you ended up volunteering because the weary, cynical, intelligent, kind people in the con ops office looked like you were throwing yourself in front of a bullet just for offering to run a clipboard down to the other end of the hotel for them.
The ice was thick enough to skate on. The circle was strong enough to let you be brave and funny and silly and free, and you could buckle down with some friends and clean all the trash out of the ballroom by 11am on Sunday, and you'd see everyone next year.
The bubble was going to burst, but nobody seemed to worry about it.
Things were changing fast for fans, all kinds of fans, in the early 2010s. Conventions that used to get news coverage like "Local Freaks Weird Out Hotel Employees: This Weekend Only" to "#Cosplay: The Hottest New Trend" and from Geocities sites that shut down if you exceeded your page visits for the month to AO3 getting 10 million pageviews a week.
It was great. We could conquer the world together. We could stay safe and together and the circle would hold.
And then the ice broke open and Lochlan fell through. Right through the bottom of that goddamn ballpit into freezing arctic sea. Right into years of people sorting through the churned ice of the wreck, taking years to come to the realization that there really had not been ANY goddamn adults in the room making sure things were okay. The community had not actually failed so much as never been formed in the first place.
Because as it turns out, group-bonding techniques that work for 100 or 1000 people do not work for 10,000. Or 100,000. Or one million. Or one billion.
That line about agreement to suspend shame sticks with me all these years after because the defining feature of post-Dashcon Tumblr has been shame. And scorn, contempt, derision, and hatred. Cringe, in short, and kys. Exactly the kind of bullshit I saw every day in junior high school, and ran to the Internet and fan conventions to get away from.
I got the kind of community and mentorship and support that have made fandom a refuge and a resource my whole life. Lochlan O'Neill didn't. Not because there was anything worse or dumber or less experienced about her.
Because a system built in the 1990s was incapable of bearing the stress of a load fifty times bigger than what was already "way too full."
Just because I'm from one generation, and she's from another.
It was not her fault.
Why, Mr. Spock, you almost make me believe in miracles. (insta | timelapse here! | commissions/prints)
Just a silly crossover that wouldn't leave my mind
i was thinking about MCU!Steve Rogers again and his relationship with women and Bucky Barnes and i believe that while it is hidden pretty well it is another case of homoerotic tension written in the narrative stemming from pure misogyny.
like there is the standard MCU baseline misogyny we saw in the early days but it's deeper than that.
Steve's awkward, stilted, half-forced romance scenes were clearly not played solely because someone was angling for signaling him as gay. if the audience can see it, there's no way active professional filmmakers didn't know.
and it's not like they couldnt keep the queerbaiting of that era without sacrificing Steve's romance scenes. they did need to make us "believe" in the end Steve could at least be bi, if not outright deny the setup they made and claim him as straight.
and it wasn't like they couldn't write moving romances elsewhere. for all the problems between Pepper and Tony, the audience could believe they were genuinely in love.
but if you compare Tony and Steve, what is the absolute major difference there? not in personality or anything. but character?
it's that Tony fundamentally is a misogynist. and Steve is not allowed to be a misogynist.
it is genuinely as if the creators behind Steve Rogers could not conceptualize a man that was fully respectful of women and also attracted to them.
like they couldn't wrap their heads around it.
so when we get his flirting, it's awkward and forced, and when we get his kissing scenes, it's as if the kisses themselves elicit no response.
because they can't imagine a man fully respectful of women to be an active participant without showing off his "male prowess".
and so we get "so obviously written as gay MCU!Steve Rogers".
that's my theory anyway.
anyways, thoughts spawned from @headspace-hotel's post about gay!Steve Rogers.
I think part of it comes from misunderstanding of some of Steve's key traits.
I think what they were trying to go for is portraying Steve as sexually naive. Part of this is because his enhanced body is new to him and he hasn't experienced people being attracted to him, but part of it is that Steve is a deeply good character and writers and audiences consistently misunderstand that as meaning "straight-laced"/goody-two-shoes/Allergic to Fun.
This says a lot about how the writers view men and manhood.
particularly I feel like the godawful ending he was given in Endgame was one of the most misogynistic plot points pertaining to this because of the logic underpinning why it was seen as a resolution to Steve's arc... he is granted access to a woman, as though he's earned a prize. There is never any question of whether Peggy would WANT to be with him, even though she literally married someone else.
It's kind of interesting how Steve is characterized in early MCU as "not a real man" (thinking of "everything special about you came out of a bottle", and "nice boots Tinker Bell") like, the artificiality of what he is is so emphasized whether intentionally or not. And later MCU changed his appearance to be more "manly-looking" (muted colors, beard). Doling out a female side character to him is a way of Granting Him Manhood.

They did such a good job with Bane's character that him simply sitting up in a bunk is an 'oh shit' moment for both the pov character and the audience.
Bane is totally without weapons, his iconic gear and outfit, and the only thing discerning him from other duros (arguably closest to the most common and 'classic' looking alien species in scyfy media) is his altered voice, but he's still a imposing presence.
slick had the right idea honestly, he deserved huge amounts of money and also to fuck off and never come back. i stand by my cancelled wife.
been dipping my toes back into star wars which, of course, means catching up on all your fics and i just want to say that like. aside from the phenomenal writing and the delightful array of rare pairs-- I really, truly, appreciate how you write characters that deserve more grace and compassion than what they get in canon. (like aura sing, for example.) idk it's just refreshing to read something where characters are treated fairly, without giving them the houseflipper whitewash and white picket fence treatment.
thank you for sharing your writing <3
Honestly characters like Aurra are a good chunk of what attracts me to SW as a media in the first place - there are so many interesting characters who canon just doesn't have time for, and they're all so complicated and fascinating and deserve a lot more than just having all their interesting bits sanded off, the way fandom often likes to do.

grocky is really good because they dont really want to Have Sex with each other as much as they want to sort of crawl into each others insides and live there forever .
weird notsex but definitely horny activity they do is rocky makes grace watch thriller or scary movies so he can be a pervert about the sound of graces heart and lungs going fucking crazy and being very Viscerally alive next to him in a controlled environment. he constantly complains about how sloshy and wet grace is all the time but privately he is so deeply traumatized and he needs to be glued to this guys obscenely exposed heartbeat and rushing blood noises at all times
also something somethinng the eridian equivalent of a vibrator being a tuning fork and they. experiment . with that. its not necessarily Sexual stimulation it doesnt really engage the reproductive organs but it DOES very much engage the pleasure sensors in their crystalbrains and involves a disgusting amount of trust because if something is resonating Directly against their carapace loud enough theyre functionally blind. grace then tries hooking it up to the frequencies of wonderwall and loses all privilages forever
anyway. i love when two characters love each other so so much in such a complicated way that they dont have sex but instead do something MUCH weirder
THEYRE SO GODDAMN WEIRD!!!!!!!
PHM AU where Carl's and Grace's roles are reversed. Do you see it?
