[lawyer voice] mothers and fuckers of the jury-
DO YOU KNOW HOW OFTEN I THINK ABOUT THIS POST??? IM IN LAW SCHOOL THIS POST IS GOING TO RUIN MY LIFE
reblog to ruin a law student’s life
The fuck even is the actual purpose of this thing
Toa Elemental Power BDSM
Oh, I had a theory on the Nuva Symbols/Cube, this is a good opportunity to write that up. I’ll talk about the symbols first as I need to give context on those first before going into my theory on the purpose of the cube.
We know that the symbols were made by Artakha at the same time as the transformation of the Mata into the Nuva, with the symbols becoming tied to their elemental powers and actually containing that power. We also know that for some reason, if the symbols are possessed by enemies of the Nuva, their link to the power within the symbols is severed and they lose the ability to use their elemental powers.
I’ve talked about this before in my Marendar based fanfic “salvation”, but it always seemed odd that the Nuva needed their powers to be held somewhere other than their bodies - we have examples like the Makuta and the Elemental Lords where they had elemental powers stronger than the Nuva without needing an outside receptacle for them, so its unlikely that the symbols were needed because their powers were too much for their bodies to handle. In the fanfic, the solution I came up with was that while their powers were not too much for their bodies to handle NOW, they would become so in the future, using the evidence of the later revealed Nuva ability to set up a delay on their powers as proof of their powers growing over time. So Artakha made the symbols and tied the Nuva powers to them to protect the Toa Nuva from their own powers in the long run. While I didn’t write this part up in the fic itself, I also had a headcanon that in this scenario, the powers would one day grow so large that even the symbols couldn’t contain them, so they needed to be combined together with the cube to expand the storage space so to speak.
However, one other intriguing possibility is that the symbols were a failsafe in case the Nuva ever went rogue.
There are plenty of intstances in the history of the Matoran Universe of the corrupting influence of power, and Toa have proven to be as susceptible to this as anyone else - just look at what happened to Tuyet with the Nui Stone. Maybe thats why their power was held in the symbols, and why Artakha added in the limitation that their connection to those powers would only be in effect if the symbols were in the possession of allies. As long as the symbols were in the possession of the Matoran, the Nuva would lose their powers if they ever turned against those they were sworn to protect. The instant the Matoran were no longer considered allies of the Nuva, the Nuva would lose their powers and their ability to harm the Matoran with them. That’s why the symbols were teleported to the villages upon their activation and not directly to the Toa, it was always the Matoran who were intended to be in possession of them. The fact that enemies could steal the symbols and also rob the Nuva of their powers would just be an unintended side effect in this scenario, one that the Bohrok-Kal took advantage of.
So what about the Nuva Cube? Well, Greg has said a few time that this was made as a failsafe by Artakha, but has always failed to elaborate on WHAT it was a failsafe against. I think we can extrapolate from both canon and the Symbols theory above to answer this.
We know that a protodermis cage made by a group of Toa can only be unlocked by the same elemental powers that created it. Just before their transformation into the Toa Nuva, the Toa Mata had created such a cage to trap the Bahrag and stop the rampage of the Bohrok Swarms. Artakha knew that while the Bohrok were released early and therefore needed to be stopped in this instance, it was critical that they be allowed to do their jobs again when the time was right. That meant that at some point, the Nuva would need to recombine their powers and release the Bahrag from their prison.
But what if, when the time came, the Bahrag weren’t able to be released? Maybe one or more of the Nuva had gone rogue and therefore the power loss failsafe had kicked in, or maybe one of them had been killed in action - the life of a Toa is a dangerous one after all. How then would the Bohrok be able to complete their mission with their queens locked away in a now impenetrable prison? That’s why Artakha made the Nuva Cube. By combining the symbols with the cube, the powers of the Toa Nuva could be accessed in the precise way needed to release the Bahrag, even if the Nuva were unwilling or unable to help. As long as you had the symbols and the cube, it could be done, even without the Nuva actually being present. And again, the Bohrok-Kal used this plan to try to release the Bahrag early, as they had no idea that Makuta had released the Bohrok Swarms before they were meant to be let loose.
quick lil Tehutti build :)

So I have recently been seeing the bonkle post poking fun at Vakama, for telling Norik that he doesn't like people who keep telling stories all the time. Norik teaches through stpries and prolly likes telling them.
Teridax also loves to speak at length (or at least hear his own voice).
I think when Norik was picked as one of Teridax's Hagah, that him being able to match his energy in talk-length also factored in. Whomever did the picking, they had the boldness to pick fun at Teridax and it's a very pvp choice to put two talkers in close proximity.
I headcanon that the MU has like. Radio, or something equivalent to it. And there's stuff like Steltian pirate stations, and a talkshow that's broadcast live from a studio on Xia, and Order of Mata Nui number-stations, among other things.

Everyone keep sending your attacks. She can't protect him forever
this bitch is literally crazy… she used to be a fitness influencer and scammed hundreds of women with alleged personalized fitness and diet coaching and she got sued by the state of texas and i believe settled for like 250,000 dollars. she then pivoted hard to conservative evangelical christian influencing. her husband is actually her second husband and he was fired from the kansas city police department for excessive use of force and when their family dog got hit by a car he whipped out his gun and shot it instead of taking it to a vet. they also forcibly exploited an unhoused man and sent him to a christian rehab… AND she holds religious retreats for roughly 700 dollars where her husband shows up despite the fact the events are described as being “women only spaces” and they baptize people in a horse trough…
Also for anyone that didn’t grow up in a fundamentalist Christian space, “husband is under spiritual attack” is usually code for having an affair/watching porn/is gay

The Toa Metru had to struggle for days or weeks to use their mask and elemental powers meanwhile Takanuva's doing this to the Rahkshi the second he becomes a Toa
not fair
Story Usefulness of the Toa Hagah and Mangai
A number of things have been on my mind about the Toa Hagah (Teridax’s team) and the Toa Mangai. The Mangai seem more renowned for what they did, while the Hagah really only seem important as Hagah for who they defected from. The actual career as a Toa Hagah team seems irrelevant. But imo they’re both fascinating teams and it seems like they’re both underutilized in the backstory of this saga.
The first thing: a plot hole: Part of me wonders if Dume called on the Brotherhood for help first, and Teridax either denied or “sent Dume to voicemail”
—Teridax had been established as the Brotherhood agent tens of thousands of years before.
—The Hagah and Mangai were both formed at about the same time.
—if both of the above stand true (and unless Teridax’s Hagah were dealing with other stuff) why didn’t Teri himself deal with the Kanohi Dragon or send his Hagah to deal with it? It’s his region and he should be overseeing it
—I do get Teridax’s may have been working more on the plan then overseeing his region, but there was potential to send his team in his stead.
—Additionally with the importance of Metru Nui to Mata Nui’s well being and the plan, it just seems odd that Teridax is completely absent from the conflict.
Part two: maybe both groups were placed inappropriately into the story.
The timeline of events in the overall story is so stretched, and I’m wondering if the story could be enriched by switching or combining their storylines.
Switching them:
Still working on the starting point for this. But if the Mangai had been the Hagah instead, we could have had:
—Lhikan’s story being more deeper and thorough. He starts out in his tower of Toa being the lone survivor. Teridax notices this, sees it as an opportunity to win Matoran over with a hero and get a chance to keep an eye on Lhikan if he has an inkling of what that Tower of Toa was guarding.
This also could have created a lot of spy espionage stories for Lhikan. He could get a chance to spy on the brotherhood from the inside. Plus an explanation for why the set has the armor and mask it does.
—put Lhikan in as a Hagah and having him deal with the frostelus encounter would be great for him dealing with trauma and a great story for four toa of ice and two toa of water.
—The many deaths of Toa Tuyet could be a longer and larger conflict. The Nui stone could be a brotherhood experiment and note about how a makuta likes to create stuff like this instead of rahi. Tuyet could have had the Nui Stone around way more Toa (other Hagah teams), murdered a few Matoran still, and the conflict with her in a show trying to overpower the Makuta themselves and then get absolutely walloped by said Makuta.
—It feels like the canon Toa Hagah really only dealt with a few Rahi invasions. They didn’t save Teridax (that we know of) from assassins etc and other bodyguard work.
—More with the Brotherhood & dark hunters: The Dark hunters start a war in Metru Nui and the brotherhood putting Teridax’s team in charge of it. (Does anyone know if the Toa Hagah were actually present for the war?) The Toa vs Dark Hunter War could be an outsourced war to all and any Toa under or aligned with the brotherhood.
—It seems that the little details we know of the Hagah deal with the rahi. This is clearly meant to foreshadow their Rahaga careers. With all of the Rahi in the archives, Po-Metru and other sectors of Metru Nui, it seems like Norik and co would be better suited living and growing as a Toa team in Metru Nui during the years.
—putting the og Hagah in the DH war could also foreshadow their conflict post Great cataclysm, where they are already facing a war against both the Brotherhood & Dark hunters.
—Involving the Brotherhood into the Kanohi Dragon conflict by bringing in their set of Hagah and the Toa Dark Hunter War could have deepened the conflict with the Dark Hunters. The buildup towards a direct war between the two would be a stronger storyline and more grand.
So I’ve been thinking about how to either combine or switch these characters so that the story could be more thorough. As nice as it is to have more Toa sets, more history of Toa, it is a wonder if the legacy of Metru Nui would have been better if there was just a switch or combo of characters in an already bloated cast.
Voporak has gotta be the most Plot Device-y character in the entire Bionicle storyline. Literally his only function is to Hold The Vahi.
He wants the Vahi for unknown reasons, and is always seeking it. But he doesn't want to use it. He's apparently just content to sit there and hold it. He has zero ambitions outside of having the Mask of Time and will just sit there and watch it while other people try to get it. But also nobody can take it off of him because his time distortion field, so it's very difficult to get it away from him. The combined result of this is that he literally doesn't notice when people attack him, because he never gets hit.
Time Trap is structured around him, because he serves the purpose of forcing the teamup between Vakama and Teridax, which is basically the entire point of the book- Letting Greg write a bunch of Teridax scenes to establish his version of the character and repair his rep after three years of him being a fairly non-threatening Disney Villain.
The most there is to say about Voporak's contributions besides "Hold the Vahi so the plot can happen" is the things that are done to him, like Teridax throwing a legion of Rahkshi at him, or Teridax power-bombing TSO into him.
Then he disappears from the series until the end of 2008, where he once again returns to yoink the Mask of Time so the plot can happen. Vakama potentially going "Maskn't!" again is perhaps the one weapon the denizens of the Matoran Universe have against Great Spirit Makuta, which would throw off what Greg's going for with the Makutaverse, and make the plot a bit too involved for a storyline that's confined to a single serial. So fortunately, he has a giant characterless guy who's perfectly suited for this moment, so Voporak pops out of nowhere at the end of 2008 and yoinks it. Zero threat of him actually doing anything with it, but no way to get it back!
