There are too friggin many will-they-won’t-they stories and when you put them getting their S.O. at the end, getting together comes off as the most important thing in their character development… How do they make it work? How do they work together?

It gets soooo much more interesting after they get together. Which ship is more fun: Morticia and Gomez (Addams family) or Aang and Katara (Last Airbender)? Who was more interesting: Ruby and Sapphire (Steven Universe) or Korra and Asami (Legend of Korra)?

Character relationships are important to add dimension to the characters and can help make them and the plot more realistic. This isn’t just for romantic relationships because building the characters’ platonic and familial relationships are important as well. So here are a few tips on creating believable and endearing relationships your readers will love.

Don’t rush into it. This goes for platonic relationships as well as romantic ones. A big cliché complaint with romance stories is that the two characters tend to meet and fall head over heels in love with each other after two conversations or one loving glance across the room (sorry Romeo and Juliet). While romantic connections can begin on the first date, the characters probably shouldn’t be professing undying love and devotion to each other an hour after meeting. The problem isn’t so much the length of time that they’ve known each other as it is how well they know each other, which is why character friendships need time too. If your characters spend two full days together where they really get to know each other deeply and we can see the progression from strangers to people who understand each other, great. If their relationship spans a year but all they do is check each other out then you have a problem. Make them know each other and interact in meaningful ways to create the relationship and show how it came to be.

Show their history. Not every relationship your characters have is going to be created in the span of time in which the story takes place. Your character might have a best friend they’ve known for ten years or three older siblings. Just because these predate the beginning of the story doesn’t mean you don’t have to show what kind of relationship they have. You can say that so-and-so is the best friend but you have to make us believe it. Are they the kind of friends that tell each other everything, like even what they probably shouldn’t? Or are they more the kind that have fun and leave the drama when they go out? Show what kind of relationship the characters have rather than just telling.

Give the reader a sense of why the relationship fits. In some stories you read about the guy and the girl who are just so cute together and they’re falling in love but…why? Why does this pairing work? Having things in common is important, particularly in things that are important to the character, like values. But they can and should also have differences, some of which serve to make the other better. Together they should push each other and support each other. If you make them connect in this way it makes the connection much stronger to the reader and that makes them want to cheer them on more. If it’s all about the smooching it can get rather boring quite quickly.

i’ve seen posts abt worldbuilding giving tips on how to worldbuild everything: From religions to magic systems to languages, but i’ve never seen anyone talk abt architecture. so here i am, trying to do it:

the only thing you need to keep in mind: architecture is directly related to your world’s culture

you can’t tak abt greece without talking abt the temples. you can’t talk abt people from egypt without talking abt the pyramids. god, you can’t talk abt the the way people lived their lives without somehow talking abt where they live. 

if you tell me that your society that depends on the sea and it doesn’t has ocean symbology on their buildings, houses, and possibly temples, im going to laugh at your face. if you tell me that your society is a war centric one, but you don’t translate it by having your “war schools” being the biggest/most important buildings, that’s stupid. maybe your society is very into politics, so tell me, where do they together to discuss and participate in it? you get the point: just like everything in your setting, your architecture will be related to where your society is from, the philosophic believes they have, and mostly their routine. 

things to keep in mind when worldbuilding your architecture

1. Writer’s Market 2019 is a great place to start– it gives you a list of magazines and journals that you can send your work to depending on the genre as well as lists a shit ton of literary agents that specify what genres they represent, how you can get in contact with them and how they accept query letters. this is a book that updates every year and tbh i only bought it this year so i dont know how critical it is to have an updated version  

2. do your research. mostly on literary agents because if you listed on your site that you like to represent fluffy YA novels and some asshole sends you a 80k manuscript about like…gritty viking culture, you will be severely pissed off. always go in finding someone who you know will actually like your work because they’re the ones who will try to advocate for you in getting published.

3. learn how to write a query letter. there are slightly varying formulas to how you can write an effective query letter. you’re also going to want to get feedback on your query letter because its the first thing the literary agent will read and based on how well you do it, it could be the difference between them rejecting you outright and giving your manuscript a quick read

4. unfortunately, you’re gonna want to get a twitter. Twitter is where a lot of literary agents are nowadays, and they host things like twitter pitch parties, where you pitch your manuscript in a few sentences and hashtag it with #Pitmad #Pitdark, some version of pit. a lot of literary agents and publishers will ALSO post their manuscript wishlists, which is just the kind of books they’d like to represent/publish, and they hashtag this with #MSWL (it is NOT for writers to use, only for agents/publishers)

i WAS going to leave the group and go my own way as soon as this job was over - and i would have gotten away with it, too, if it weren’t for my meddling heart!

villains with Feelings™

Find the song your character listens to all the time and try to find why that song is special and what they think when they hear it.

Imagine/write the scene in the same or a similar place where it unfolds, be it the kitchen or the garden. (And...)

Imagine/write the scene at the same time it occurs. Cover yourself with a blanket to pretend it's night if you have to.

When you're imagining, pretend you're the pov character and write down the special details they *insert all senses*, what they would like to do but can't and the thoughts that come to their mind.

Write dialogue that feels special first and try to find a way to make it shine and be of importance when writing the scene. (Or... )

a character gets a sick burn and doesn’t realize it immediately, at some point later there’s just “HEY WAIT A MINUTE”

the double take. this one’s an oldie but a goodie

the injured character makes the killing shot that saves everyone else in a dangerous situation

a character who isn’t speaking is doing something weird in the background, it’s subtle and never acknowledged it’s just there for those who notice it (pulling another character out of something they got stuck in, making a huge sandwich, etc)

the beleaguered assistant inches away from smacking their boss

“quick act natural”

in that vein, the leader character was just in a shouting match with someone and when they come back the rest of the team scrambles to look like they weren’t listening at the door

Multiple characters banding together to lie about something 

Characters being split up for questioning

Really stoic characters briefly becoming happy, freaking everyone out

- Character A is talking, saying something like “It’s not like anybody would ever be so stupid to do that, right”

- Character A telling the rest of the cast to “relax, I have a foolproof plan” and then scene immediately changes to show all the cast fleeing for their lives after the failure of the Definitely-Not-A-Plan-Let-Alone-A-Foolproof-One.
