"Solarpunk will never happen!"
As if it's not already coming, already here and starting to bloom before our eyes.
Neighborhood cooking clubs and libraries lending out more then just books, it's the art club that the community garden started, it's the funky gardens my neighbors have.
It's the DIY projects ppl wear with pride and ones that hide in the back of their dresser drawer. It's in the magazines and podcasts and in passing hope forward.
Like gruella gardening alone is enough for proof of concept for me, but the rise in community events and potlucks and fighting for rent caps and UBI and decentalizing energy and gardening is happening now.
And yea I gotta fight nazis and dickwards daily for it, and I gotta spend the time to educate and build up as I take down, but they can't say this future isn't coming. I'm here with you right now in it.
āIt is not so much for its beauty that the forest makes a claim upon menās hearts, as for that subtle something, that quality of air that emanation from old trees, that so wonderfully changes and renews a weary spirit.ā
āĀ Robert Louis Stevenson

Something that I think should be an important part of solarpunk aesthetics is screws.
Look at your smartphone. No screws. You've got to have specialized tools to get inside your phone to repair something. There are certain pieces of tech that are glued in place and glue can't be undone without permanently breaking the bond.
But screws!
You can take apart a broken old radio, repair what's broken, and, if you were careful in taking it apart, you can put it back together and have a fully functioning radio and all you need is a common screwdriver!
It's hard to build screws and other mechanical fasteners because it requires more planning than clamps and glues, but isn't that what solarpunk is all aboutā½ It's about care and sustainability and and a radio or a computer built carefully with repair in mind is a sustainable computer that stays out of landfills and in use.
So. Storytime for guerilla gardeners and solarpunk enthusiasts. This story comes to me 3rd hand but I believe the basic shape of it is true, even if details may be off.
So thereās this guy who lives in my parentsā town. Wanted to have a pocket farm but lives on an urban lot in a small city instead because yāknow jobs and stuff. He could definitely get a few raised beds in the backyard but nothing all that impressive and the front yard is on a very busy road with the expectation that itāll look reasonably traditional (plus planting food by busy roads isnāt always a good idea).
However
After heās lived there for a while, he realizes his neighbors are all older people who maybe have more challenges taking care of their yards than they used to. So he goes to his next door neighbor and offers a deal: Iāll mow and maintain your front yard for free if you let me knock down the fences between our backyards and plant them both with food. And youāll get a cut of the produce.
Presumably the neighbor already knew and trusted this guy because he said yes. So he starts mowing and maintaining his and his neighborās front yards and planting food in their now-shared backyards. After a season or two this goes well enough that the next neighbor down the street asks if he can be in on this too.
So now thereās 3 front yards to mow and three backyards full of produce. And it keeps going from there. Dude gets a rider lawnmower and does everyoneās front yards, and meanwhile heās maintaining an entire blockās worth of produce in the back. His yields got so high that he was able to start offering boxes of produce outside of the blockās residents too. This is how I heard of him: my parentsā next door neighbors were picking up a regular box of produce from him.
I love a couple of things about this story:
Offering to maintain peopleās front yards for them allows baby boomers to feed their thirst for keeping up appearances while still getting food production into the neighborhood
As homeowners age offering services like this is legitimately good community building
BLOCK-LONG POCKET FARM
These exact circumstances might not be replicable everywhere, but I love thinking about how these principles could be applied.

Visible Mending
Introduction:
Visible mending is a decorative way to fix up an item. Instead of trying to make your mend as invisible as possible, the idea is to make it part of the garment's design.
Visual mending is not a single technique: it's more of a mindset. If you've got an item you love, it deserves to be mended, and if you're going to put that love into stitches, why not show them off?
That being said, there are some specific techniques that are popular with visible menders. Let's take a look!
Sashiko:
Sashiko is a type of traditional Japanese embroidery that is used to both decorate and reinforce fabric. In visible mending, sashiko is often used to cover up holes with patches or to reinforce thinning fabric. This technique uses a variation on the running stitch.
(Image source) [ID: sashiko stitch diagram: the distance between each stitch is 1/2 stitch in length.]
Some resources on sashiko:
SashiCo on YouTube: sashiko livestreams and information on the cultural aspect of sashiko.
Written tutorial by Upcycle Stitches.
Free sashiko templates by TheSpruceCrafts.

Embroidery:
Regular embroidery is also a popular technique to accentuate your mends. Check out my embroidery 101 post to learn how to get started. You can embroider patches, or use embroidery to hide or accentuate any stitches you've made to fix holes. Embroidery's also a great way to cover up stains.

(Image source) [ID: colourful flower embroidery surrounds a hole in a pair of dark gray jeans. Fabric with a red and black flower print peaks out of the hole.]
Patches:
There are many ways to add patches to a garment. My tutorial on patches is a good place to start if you want to make custom-shaped patches to sew on top of your fabric. You can also sew your patch on the inside of your garment and have it peek out from beneath the hole you're trying to fix. Fun ideas for this are lace or superheroes.

Darning:
Darning is a technique used to repair holes in fabric by using running stitches to weave extra fabric over the hole as to fill it up again. While traditionally darning is done in an invisible way by using the same colour of thread as your fabric, you can also use contrasting colours to accentuate your fix. Check out this written tutorial on darning by TheSpruceCrafts.

Conclusion:
Visible mending is a creative way to fix up your clothes and give them some personality at the same time.
You should be proud of the fact that you took the time and learned the necessary skills needed to mend your clothes! Show off what you did!
A fun side effect of wearing these obvious mends is that people will notice them. They'll remember your fixes the next time they're faced with a hole in their wardrobe, and it will make them more likely to try it for themselves.
These are just a few ways to visibly mend your garments. Want more inspiration? Check out Pinterest or r/Visiblemending on Reddit.

hi! just wanted to say that
if i like your vent post i mean it in a āiām listeningā or āi donāt know what to say but good luck or hope you feel better!ā
i do not mean it in a āiām happy youāre not doing wellā or āi like that youāre feeling downā (because thatās obviously wrong)
no particular thing came up just felt the need to clarify <3
Today I learned
Free Audiobooks and Ebooks on OVERDRIVE.
Free Graphic Novels (DC, Marvel, Image, etc), Music, TV shows, and music on HOOPLA.
Free music that you can KEEP on FREEGAL
You are PAYING for all this with your tax money - USE THEM. Most likely systems will have all 3 or 2 out of 3, so if you arenāt sure call your local libraryās reference/information desk and how you can get set-up or started.
Hey, highkey from a library worker:Ā
Overdrive has a new mobile app called LIBBYĀ I find it easier to use.Ā Itās the same content as Overdrive just better for mobile.Ā Overdrive and Libby both let you send items to your kindle as well.Ā Ā
Can confirm Overdrive is amazing.Ā
I work in the largest library system in my state (17 branches in total).
I use it not only for ebooks, but movies as well.
Other FREE resources to check with your library for are:
Freegal Music (download and keep music, including current music)
Hoopla Digital (borrow ebooks, e-audiobooks, e-graphic novels, stream movies)
Kanopy (stream movies; also available on Roku!)
Axis360 (usually hot or just released ebooks)
If you donāt have a library cardā¦
GET ONE!
If someone says libraries are a thing of the pastā¦
BOOP THEM IN THE NOSE WITH YOUR KINDLE!
Donāt discount libraries asĀ āquietā places.Ā
THEY ARE ALIVE!!!
THEY ARE LOUD!!!
THEY ARE YOUR DOORWAYS TO KNOWLEDGE!!
Also if you canāt find something particular at your library and want to support local book stores, Libro.fm is basically the exact same thing as audible, but it lets you choose an indie bookstore to purchase through instead of your money going to Amazon.
If the book is in the public domain and in english, it is likely also an audiobook on Librivox. Itās a volunteer audio archive that seeks to make an audio Library of Alexandria.
(And you donāt need a library card or to be in the United States to use it.)
I worked at a grocery store. We did this same shit with literal tons of food and it radicalized me more than any book ever could.
Legitimately I would start giving away pastries to anyone who tried to buy one after 8pm because I felt viscerally disgusted by the idea of selling someone a muffin I was supposed to throw away in an hour.
This is so appalling to me. Absolutely disgusting. I hate that this is the world weāve created.
(Transcript of post included here) I didnāt want to derail this excellent thread, so I am posting this seperately. I just felt the need to comment here because, as someone who has been advocating in predominantly leftist yet overwhelmingly anti-vegan spaces for quite a long time, I find discussions like this one utterly fascinating, because⦠Well, this is essentially our entire argument, isnāt it? As vegans we hold that lives have inherent value, and should be valued about trivial, extrinsic goods, such as profit or property. From this discussion youād assume that leftists would agree with this in principle, but the vast majority of them do not. If lives have more value than property, why are animal liberation activitists who damage property and rescue animals routinely demonised by the left? If lives are de facto of more value than property, why donāt most leftists object to the property status of animals as a legal reality?
In fact, the logic being mocked here by thousands of leftists, is the very same logic that leftists themselves regularly employ in their debates with vegans. That no, of course lives donāt have more value than extrinsic goods, such as taste, habit, convenience or tradition, because of arbitrary criteria such as their place on our so-called āfood chain, their intelligence, fallacious appeals to nature, necessity, norms etc.
People who think like this lack the compassion to realise that everyone is in someoneās immediate sphere of influence - that everyone is someoneās lover, or brother, or parent. Everyone means the world to someone. And itās the absolute height of selfishness to assume that their lives donāt have value just because they donāt mean the world to you.
This is beautifully put, and I wholeheartedly agree. OP themselves may be vegan for all I know and this is not a criticism of them or their logic, but I canāt help wonder, would the thousands of people reblogging this post agree if the context were farmed animals, rather than humans? Is every farmed pig not in someoneās immediate sphere of influence? Is every stolen/killed lamb not someoneās child? Is every slaughtered dairy cow not someoneās mother? is every animal not the psychological centre of their own lives, with their own desires, fears, and by extension, their own rights?
Is the problem for farmed animals not that people have a hard time seeing outside their human sphere of influence, ans view the lives of non-human animals as theoretical statistics, rather than actual lives that matter? That is a strikingly familliar criticism to me, since it is one that is made very often in the vegan community.
Yet what justification can there be for agreeing in principle with the idea that lives have more intrinsic value than extrinsic goods such as property, but not applying that same logic to non-humans animals? Do we just apply this logic to some animals, but not others, depending on whether or not we want to eat them? You would let the statue of liberty burn to save one pigeon, but would you let the animal agriculture industry burn to save trillions of cows, pigs, sheep, chickens and fish?
This is very well put, and I wholeheartedly agree.
WHAT THE ABSOLUTE FUCK IS WRONG WITH YOU AMERICAN EDUCATION SYSTEM?!!
Here in Australia we just explain how seatbelts work and about not getting into cars with drunk drivers but okay America.
#i think its because teenagers are kinda dumb and think theyre invincible#at least my students are#so you have to show them death to smack it into their heads that they can actually dieĀ
You clearly donāt have to, since we get along just fine without doing it. This just sounds like a great way to traumatise kids but the stats say that American kids tend to come out of high school with PTSD anyway so in for a penny I guess. Is there any data to suggest that this affects teen road accident statistics in any way or did someone just decide it sounded cool and impactful one day?
If this is a common US thing at all (and I doubt it - in fact Iād guess some or all of these tweets are complete fabrications), itās recent. This didnāt happen when I went to high school and Iāve never personally heard of it happening anywhere else either.
Hereās a Wikipedia article about one such program. My high school did it. Also they lie about statistics. And at my school, people eulogized themselves and we were supposed to act respectful during it.
Also, the teachers were supposed to keep the scheduling a secret, but the German instructor warned us.
ā¦. Listen Iām an American and have known so many people in high schools across the country and definitely experienced some fucked up shit (like hell houses on Halloween) intended to scare teens into good behavior. But Iāve NEVER fucking heard of this??????
š°š°š°š°
This has⦠gotta be some recent thing
What the fuck
Nope, not recent. My high school did this and that would have been fifteen years ago.
I remember being equal parts ticked off because I wasnāt chosen to participate as part of the drama club and because I knew several people who didnāt have to go because they had actual ptsd from car accidents, but inflicting it on the rest of the student body was a-ok by the administration.
my school didnāt do this, but I had to watch a video with survivors of fatal car crashes describing their friendsā deaths in graphic detail for my parentsā insurance company before I got my learnerās permit. mercifully, the agent noticed me shaking with horror ten minutes in and turned it off
now Iām 28 and I havenāt driven in 5 years. I learned, reluctantly, as a teenager, and got my license. but Iāve always been absolutely petrified of it, in no small part because of scare-āem-straight programs like E15 and that insurance thing
it didnāt just frighten me off from driving drunk- it frightened me off from driving at all
Oh, we totally did this at my school, back in 2012. Grim reaper and all. They landed an actual helicopter on the football field and airlifted one of the āvictimsā to a nearby hospital.
It was supposed to be to warn against drunk driving. Ironically, one of the kids involved got into a motorcycle accident like three weeks later because he tried riding home after drinking (broke both arms I think, but lived).
We didnāt have anything quite like that, but my driverās ed class showed us a video that included someone climbing out the window of a burning car.
