I was just reflecting on Star Trek Voyager, as one does, and noted that Janeway is hardest on Harry Kim when he fucks up. Then it dawned on me: she’s grooming him for command of Voyager after she’s gone. The man’s brilliant; in an alternate reality, we saw him successfully lead the Yosemite-class Runabout program, and even in our own reality he was given command of the off-shift by like year four. This is not something you do to your favorite punching bag: this is an honor you grant your protégé.

Odo’s role in far beyond the stars as the editor who’s “just doing what the owners of the magazine tell him” even if that includes being racist and sexist is such a fantastic parallel to his role as a collaborator in the occupation. He’s not the one committing genocide, he’s not the bad guy here, he’s just enforcing the rule of the ones who are actually committing the genocide.
