the space seed episode of tos where they find khan and the ss botany bay is so funny because right off the bat you have kirk being like "yeah let's get that historian whats-her-name out there, maybe she can be useful for once" and it's like WOAH what's up with the liberal arts hate?? why is kirk being such a bitch to this lady for no reason. then you meet her and she's fucking obsessed with historical strongmen to the point of covering her walls in her own fanart. she lives on a spaceship in a utopian technofuture and she sleeps surrounded by busts of kings on purpose. her vibes are fashy and kirk is right to be a bitch, actually.
then they get to the botany bay and she's immediately driven to distraction by how horny she is for ricardo montalban under a thick layer of extra-dark foundation. sorry i'm gonna compare montalban with and without the makeup because it is SO distracting
also she refers to sikhs in the past tense implying that at some point in the last two hundred years there was a genocide that they're just glossing over. since she also calls them a warrior race it's also possible that she's just racist and somewhere on board the enterprise there are sikh crew members who dislike her as much as kirk does.
anyway you can assume that this is her first actual away mission and she fumbled immediately because she was so hot for khan but it's much funnier if this isn't the first time this has happened. every time they have to interact with a historical earth artifact she gets so horned up thinking about being a tradwife that she's rendered speechless. spock stays polite but kirk can't stand her. by the time kirk found out she was the type of person to paint her own portraits of napoleon and roman emperors to hang in her quarters it was too late to send her back and request literally anyone else. he's supposed to court martial her but offers to let her stay on fashy eugenics planet just so he won't have to keep her on his ship anymore. it's unclear if he lets her take her paintings or jettisons them into space.
You know, if she hadn't completely fucked up her job in this episode, one suspects her career would not have survived The One With the Nazis from the next season

On the subject of Spirk and Garashir commonalities, The Wire and Amok Time are equivalent in that they are The Peak Shipping Episode - because they are tonally opposite of the majority of the onscreen dynamic, and that tonal dissonance brings the ship from "those two guys" to "barely even subtext."
Spirk is very much a product of its time: a brothers in arms bond that goes deeper than just simple platonic affection. Its subtext is completely accidental; neither actor was intentionally playing a romance. Yet there is something more compelling there than just brothers in arms. There is a sensuality to some of their interactions, but for the most part I read this primal devotion to each other. One half cannot exist without the other. They state this on screen multiple times.
And while there is that devotion in Amok Time, it is unabashedly horny in a way that very few other Spirk moments are. They are straight up fight fucking in the sand. People saw it in 1967, people see it today. It is the type of gay sex that isn't actually gay sex but is more homosexual than gay sex because it's not gay sex. It's the complete opposite of their usual dynamic, and yet it brings a primal chemistry to the mix. It exposes that their relationship is not just simple comraderie, there's a sexual undertone there.
Garashir, on the other hand, is a far more sensual, even erotic dynamic. It's acted out intentionally on the parts of both actors, especially Andy Robinson's half. Garak literally cruises Julian in the replimat for their very first meeting, and for each one of their lunch dates it always feels a bit subversive (usually because they're debating some hard hitting topics). There's a lot of innuendo going on, visually.
And while there are some erotic moments in The Wire (the cork scene in Quark's anyone?), it is, first and foremost, a story about pure unconditional love. Garak and Bashir might be two utter freaks, but they are devoted to each other in some of the most romantic ways I've ever seen on television. Garak asking for forgiveness and Julian giving it to him freely is a moment of pure, true love. Likewise, Garak submitting to Julian's care and being vulnerable to him, even telling him the truth veiled in lies, is an act of pure, true love. It takes the ship from just two men dancing around each other flirting to genuine romance.
if there's one thing the ds9 finale did, it was completely convince me that the only satisfying conclusion to julian bashir's arc would be him eventually ending up on cardassia
a small disclaimer: despite believing in garashir wholeheartedly and adoring the romantic undertones that would accompany julian's moving to cardassia, the narrative elements are the things making me so insane about this, and so convinced there can be no other fate for julian.
the focus on the characters who moved on (sisko, odo, o'brien, worf) made it all the more stark just how unmoored julian is in the wake of this episode, and how much of his connection to the station as home was based on the people around him rather than the physical location. he looks absolutely gutted with each departure and, unlike kira with sisko's baseball, he doesn't really have a moment of acceptance or get to fill a role that was left. in fact, the conversation he does have with ezri just emphasises how, for julian, things are never going to be as good as they used to be.
with this in mind (as well as the likelihood of things calming down professionally for him due to the war being over), it would make much more sense for him to leave the station either after helping with war casualties or staying on for longer. so the question is: where would he go?
given what i've argued about his sense of belonging being strongly tied to people, it stands to reason that the places he would feel drawn to would be the places his friends live. o'brien, of course, is on earth, but considering his tenuous relationship with his parents and his past trauma, and how much he has been able to let go of all that and actually be himself on ds9, i can't imagine it being a place he would be drawn to return to long term. what's more, a human dominated post-scarcity planet would hardly be a challenging environment for him medically. turning to his other strongest relationship brings us to garak on cardassia.
i think cardassia itself would appeal to julian somewhat after spending years slowly learning about their literature and culture through garak. i also think an alien planet would be oddly freeing for him, giving him a chance to live among a population who consider him strange by virtue of being human rather than because he's an augment or because he is (unbeknownst to them) quite an odd human so to speak. I've always seen julian and garak as providing each other a space free of the typical judgements they face from everyone else, and i can totally imagine julian having that association with the planet because of it.
my favourite reason, however, goes back to the ds9 pilot and julian's infamous 'frontier medicine' line. because post-war cardassia, with its bombed out infrastructure and millions dead and displaced, is exactly the kind of situation that would challenge him in that way. except now, julian is older, wiser, and has years of combat experience under his belt. his time on ds9 is what changed him into the person he dreamed of being, and while the reality is much grimmer than he ever imagined, he's now ready to be the person who can go to this devastated planet and help them rebuild from the ground up. in the Our Man Bashir episode of the Delta Flyers podcast, alexander siddig mentioned how the show watches julian grow up over its course. ds9 was a transitional period for julian, and moving on to cardassia is exactly the sort of thing that would allow those changes to be put to use.
i haven't properly got into beta canon (yet), but based on watching the show and the vision of bashir and his arc i've been slowly developing over these past 4-5 months of watching, i can't believe there's any other end for him. his professional satisfaction, social liberation, and emotional fulfilment all point in one direction. and if there's anything i've learnt about julian bashir, it's that he has never been put off by 'uncertain times'.
Devastating: The cute, smart doctor you've been crushing on read your most favoritest book and hated it. Supposedly it's ""too repetitive"" and the characters are ""flat"" and the whole thing is ""fascist propaganda"". 🙄🙄
