I'm an extreme introvert, and still struggling with the mental and emotional ramifications of staying home as much as possible. Motivation is down, anxiety and depression are, meds arent working like they should. As much as I want to feel accomplished and productive everyday, I'm just trying to get through it an hour at a time.

my brain: i wanna go an a walk, i wanna draw, i wanna make some tea, i wanna read, watch movies, clean, i wanna write letters, plants, study time, bake cookies!!, thrift shopping!,,,
me: okay, sounds wonderful. lets do it!
also my brain: maybe tomorrow :)
The thing about knitting is itās much harder to fear the existential futility of all your actions while youāre doing it.
Like ok, sure, sometimes itās hard to believe youāve made any positive impact on the world. But itās pretty easy to believe youāve made a sock. Look at it. There it is. Put it on, now your footās warm.
Checkmate, nihilism.
This is a powerful positive message..
Iām literally reading a book right now (Burnout by Emily and Amelia Nagoski) that says this is scientifically sound.
There have been studies done on rats and dogs where they develop learned helplessness in the animals by giving them impossible tasks. Eventually the animals stop trying, even when the task stops being impossible. (I.e. put a rat in a maze with cheese it canāt get to until it develops learned helplessness, then put the cheese somewhere it canĀ get to it and it wonāt even try.) But once they show the animals they CAN do something - i.e. physically moving the rat to the cheese - the learned helplessness goes away.
No one can move you to your cheese for you, but the book says DOING something - which they define asĀ āanything that isnāt nothingā can help. Make a food. Work in the garden. Clean a thing. Do a favor for a friend. Call your elected officials.
Knit a sock.
If you feel overwhelmed by existential despair, do something. It doesnāt have to be big. It just has to be anything that isnāt nothing.
This is really good advice for ADHD people because when executive dysfunction gets bad itās easy to fall into this pattern of thinking. Do just one thing. It doesnāt have to be your homework, or a chore. It can be something small, it can be something you enjoy. But do just one thing to remind yourself that you can.
I just finished Middlegame, and I'm just....I don't even know? Overwhelmed. Just completely overwhelmed by the scope and size and all the moving pieces of this tale that fit together and move so seamlessly that there must be magick involved.
This is the kind of book that makes me leap for joy as a reader, because I have the privilege to read these astonishing words, but despair as a writer, because how could I ever hope to command the language even half as well as this flawless execution?
I'm going to be thinking about this one for weeks.
Okay, hereāre my headcanon:
Aziraphale and Crowley are attending (ex) Madam Tracy and Shadwellās wedding. Theyāre are standing at a certain distance from the church, ācause you know, consecrated ground. Upon exiting the church, happy Mrs. Shadwell throws her wedding bouquet into the small group of guests. Anathema almost catches it, but at the last moment it āmiraculouslyā flies over her head and falls right into Aziraphaleās hands. Bewildered and enchanted, angel buries his face in the flowers, but then with a sudden realization turns over to Crowley:
Aziraphale (suspiciously): This is your demonic work, isnāt it?
Crowley (innocently) : You canāt prove anything.
okay this is brilliant but im obsessed with the idea that they go inside the church to watch the ceremony and aziraphale just holds crowley in a firemanās carry the whole time
I can HEAR David Tennant saying this line.
do you ever wish you could just stop time for like a couple weeks so you could just sleep and do whatever you want and just get your shit together and then after that time would just start back up again and you wouldnāt have missed anything because you would just pick up where you left off
Aaaall the time.

Weāre all just walking through life pretending we know what weāre doing.Ā
Some days...
Some days, I wake up and I take the medication that is prescribed to me so that I can be a functional human being, and it's a good day. Ā Even if it's not a good day, the part of my brain that knows what it's doing is in charge, and we get things done. Ā Things like work, eating, sleeping, paying bills, etc. Ā Things that people who don't have depression, anxiety, PTSD, and executive function issues take for granted.Ā
Then some days I wake up, and I take my medication, and it feels like I took a capsule full of air for all the effect it has. Ā Today was one of those days. Ā Had plans to do fun things like make jam, then got super overwhelmed by all the things that had to be done before I could make jam (like, you know, clean off the stove, which has become the dirty-dishes-holding-spot), and my brain just noped right out of that. Ā
The super fun thing is that even when my meds don't work, I still get the fun of the side effects, so I was in bed for several hours this evening with muscle cramps and bone pain, and lethargy so strong it felt like sleep paralysis. Ā It feels like a wasted day, because all I really did was rest. Ā But, I needed that rest. Ā
But tomorrow, I'm still going to get up and take my medication, because a 50/50 shot at a good day is pretty dang good.Ā And hopefully Iāll get around to making that jam before the 12 pounds of strawberries I bought go bad.Ā
I was pleasantly surprised to find that 4thewords had updated their mobile interface when I signed on for the first time in a while. Meaning, I can use my phone to write! I've put in about 2,000 words over the past two nights, just by writing in bed after I get home from work. I'm excited to finally make some progress on several story ideas that have been knocking around in my head for awhile.
Ditch ValueĀ judgments
What are value judgments?
We place value judgments on our emotions, our bodies, the food we eat, or what movies we relax with. This is built into the way we talk and think about our lives. Itās generally based around word connotationĀ or the way we are taught to view everything in our lives.to see things.
A few examples of value judgment languages:
We act as though itās ābadā to be angry or sad and āgoodā to be happy or calm as Ā "good".Ā
Eating Oreos is somehow a ācheat foodā, āuncleanā or that itās somehow a personal falling that you didnāt choose carrots.
Calling part of our bodies āproblem partsā
Saying when we watch the notebook or watch reality TV itās a āguilty pleasureā.
These value judgements seep into the way we describe our whole self. Framing our sleeves as ādisgustingā, āhorribleā,ālazyā, ābadā etc.
Why is this harmful?Ā
This language affects us so much. It changes how we view our choices and actions. Attaches shame to things that arenāt shameful, causes fear around being who we are and it reinforces negativity and sets unattainable goalsĀ This is especially harmful because it throws the whole way you interact with yourself and the world out of focus and can cause you to stagnate. It becomes if I am āa gross personā then integral to you instead of a passing thought your having. Now itās āI canāt feel better, Iāll always be this wayā.
So how do we break out from this?
When you find yourself using value-based language switch it up.
Instead of Ā "Donāt to be angry" try and reframe it āIām angry and thatās my emotion and itās valid, now let me find a way to deal with itā
Instead of āI cheated and ate the cake god how could I make that mistakeā reframe it as āI ate cake today thatās fine.ā
Instead of āI didnāt do X so Iām just a lazy personā can become āI was tired today and I didnāt get it done, thatās okay I can rest and mak a plan tomorrowā
Instead of āIām a disgusting person because X thing happenedā Ā replace it with āThat happened and it was upsetting but it doesnāt change my worthā
Placing value judgments may feel right in the moments either were upset with ourselves or weāve been trained to see things as good or bad. When we stop judging everything and learn to view things with acceptance it improves our self-perception and makes it easier to move forward and even improve when we need to.
being mentally ill + having adhd is just you thinkingĀ āit canāt go on like this foreverā but then it just⦠goes on⦠like this⦠forever
