The way this movie opens is iconic enough, Charles' monologue about evolution and then we're shown Erik's power manifestation, I believe this scene works better in this than first class for a very simple reason: it's simpler. that might be just nostalgia, but I believe less is more.

In paper this scene is so simple: Scared kid reaches for his parents. In truth, is not only a scared kid, it's a terrified young man, forced to grow up too fast, knowing what being separated truly means, and that in a moment of absoute terror tries to reach up to his parents. For a character that will later grow to try to diferentate himself from humans so much... This is such a human moment.

Jumping into another scene where powers are first manifested, it's a wonderful juxtaposition, powers born out of fear for others, powers born to make others fear.

If I'm honest I always forget this scene, and is not a bad one, it's just one of the things I tend to forget, I know it exists, I just need to be reminded of it to remember it.

Poor Rogue though... they butcher her powers in the movies, and I think is a shame, cause the acting is awesome.

JEAN MOTHERFUCKING GREY LADIES AND GENTLEMEN.

Are mutant dangerous? Kelly my man you live in the US, anyone there is a dam danger. See this is what makes me angry about humans in the X-men movies. EVERYONE HAS THE SAME POTENTIAL TO BE GOOD OR A BASTARD, they hate the little girl with big x-ray eyes cause she looks weird, yet humans choose idiots as their leaders day in and day out. (In the comics it makes me even angrier cause the F4 are good, and respected but the X-men are hated cause they're not humans. BISH THE LAST TIME I CHECKED, THOR WASN'T HUMAN EITHER.)

They then focus on Kitty and her ability to walk through walls as an example, but my point still stands, and MAGNETO WAS RIGHT. Registrating people, be it for being mutants, or being a different ethnicity, or having a different sexuality will never be right in my eyes. AND THE FACT THAT WITH EACH DAY WE GET CLOSER TO MAGNETO BEING THE RIGHT ONE ON THIS MAKES ME MAD.

AMERICAN PEOPLE DESERVE TO KNOW IF THEY WANT THEIR KIDS TO BE TAUGHT BY MUTANTS... FOR THE LOVE OF ALL THE GODS IN ALL HUMAN PANTHEONS I URGE YOU ALL TO CHANGE THE WORD MUTANT FOR ANY OHTER MINORITY IN THAT PHRASE, IN THAT CONTEXT AND TELL ME YOU KEEP THINKING HE'S RIGHT. I swear that makes me sick.

Bit of a respite, scenes with Patrick and Ian always soothe me. ALSO THIS MOVIE IS THE ONLY TIMELINE WHERE I DON'T WANT TO RIP CHARLES' HEAD AND IS ALL THANKS TO SIR PATRICK (for more info on my hatred of charles check my tag: Welcome to our daily fuck you charles section)

They sell the two firends who love the other so much but also are on two sides of such a polarising deal. Magneto and the Professor are based on Malcom X and Dr Luther King, I won't talk about that much, I'm a white European woman, it is not my place, but I'll say I find endearing they are inspired by men that really existed and fought for what they believed on with two different attitudes, but still had such respect for each other.

Time for the part that made my clumsy idiot ass want to grow to become a badass (never happened but hey I hope 5 YO Noa would still think I'm kinda cool)

Marie is dropped in Alberta, by a friendly diver WHO IS THE VA OF BEAST IN THE OG X-MEN TV SHOW.

MOMENT OF SILENCE FOR THE SOUND EDITORS OF THIS SCENE. THE METALLIC HIT ON EVERYTHING IS PERFECT.

AND THE HIT WITH THE HEAD IS ICONIC, BADASS MADE PERSON. ALSO SOMEONE GET THIS SCENE IN FRONT OF HUGH AND TELL HIM HE'S ALLOWED TO EAT AGAIN.

Marie ready to steal is very credible, she looks visibly hungry. The Ellis Island shit is also NICE FORSHADOWING AND EXPOSITION, THAT'S DONE CORRECTLY, cause at the same time the actors are acting, you are seeing their faces and they're reacting, we know is exposition but is important exposition that tells us something about the characters, in this case, Logan's contempt for whatever that happens at large in the world, and we are brought right up to the present by the angry fighter, which is relevant, cause TALKING ABOUT MUTANTS PROBABLY BROUGHT THAT LOGAN IS ONE TO HIS MIND.

26 fucking years later that stupid scene holds out CAUSE IT'S MOSTLY PRACTICAL YOU HEAR ME DISNEY???? IS MOSTLY PACTICAL, JUST A BIT OF CGI.... again masive props for the sound guys, but also... the blade reflects on the dude's neck, it gives the right weight and feel... IT'S FUCKING THERE. WE'LL TALK ABOUT THIS SCENE A BIT MORE ON THE LOGAN BREAKDOWN CAUSE IT'S A COUNTERPOINT TO THIS ONE.

But for now it also shows us what kind of person Logan is, he's quick to anger, he has an extreme control over his body and his environment and has some mercy if the situation calls for it.

THE SOUND THE DAMN SOUND OF THE BLADES GOING IN AND OUT IS MY DAMN CHILDHOOD...

The moment of him being in pain also is a great way to build character, you add him SNIFFING AND HEARING MARIE'S BREATHING AND THE SCENE IS AWESOME.

She tries to use the I SAVED YOUR LIFE, AND HE SAYS YOU DON'T which tells us that he has... some experience knowing what he can survive, even if he doesn't properly know his own story. (And him picking her up again shows up he has a soft spot and IS A GIRL DAD TRHOUGH AND THROUGH, Sorry to Aki and James...)

Marie explaining her powers and he goes... GIRL WHO AM I TO JUDGE??

The questioning is old but again is needed for us to understand them both. Rogue, or Marie, is trying to still be kind, to be human... Logan is just used to being a loner, almost an animal...

He feels pain, it would seem is all he feels, and she feels fear cause she inflicts pain. Yet she tries to understand cause she can see he, like her, doesn't have much more to lose.

When he asks her: What kind of name is Rogue? we can see the human soul shining through the animal mask, the soul that recognizes someone lost and that even if he can't remember, still is better than what others tried to make him.

Them sharing their names is that Human to Human conectoin they're both fearing and also searching.

The seatbelt gag is hilarious, cause it's nagging but is also WORRY, SHE'S WORRYING ABOUT HIM, but she's about to see why he doesn't need it. Great set up and execution, he goes through the damn windshield and survives something deadly with just a head cut that's ALREADY HEALING

We should be ready for Logan's poers to be inconsistent in the movies, though they are also pretty inconsistent in the comics.

ANYWAY WE ARRIVE AT MY FAVORITE PART OF THE MOVIE 😎😎😎😎

I'M A WOLVERINE NERD YES, BUT I'M ALSO A HUGE SABRETOOTH FAN.

The fight is just clumsy, but hey first movie, small budget, Vic walking slowly to the car only to be stopped by the QUEEN ORORO is iconic at this point, I do like this design, in general I believe that the more you allow us to see who someone is the better, in this case, We see Victor and know EXACTLY he's the bad boi, he mean, he looks grizzled and his mane is a mess, he wears PELTS, an interesting choice I might add, it shows he hunts, the fangs are also a quick way to show he's more over the edge than Logan. He's much more agile too, that jump wasn't natural.

RAY PARK AS TOAD WAS ALSO A GREAT CAST CAUSE YOU NEED SOMEONE ATHLETIC YET LEAN TO PLAY TOAD. (more forshadowing he's painting the thingy at the bottom of the staue that Magneto will use later to hide the machine in the Statue of Liberty)

Going back to Victor, he roars, growls openly, yet another distintion to Logan's more restrained sounds, I do not like the entirely black pupil design, I believe it doesn't work for almost any character. SURPRISINGLY HIS VOICE IS SOFTER THAN I EXPECTED?! I don't know if this was a dub thing, but in Spanish, he sounded rougher? Like his voice was deeper....

Erik question about THE mutant is a very nice little red flag... I like missdirection with a purpose.

JEANIEEEEEE JEANIEEEEE, I love her, but Ma'am you shouldn't be touching people just like that... also bad telepath to not know the subject is awake.

CHARLES GIVE HER A PROPER TELEPATH CLASS THIS GIRL IS IN THE BLIND, SHE EARNED THAT SCARE YES, BUT COME ON.

Logan reactions are also kind of interesting in it of themselves, he hides, like an animal that has been discovered, yet he's curious as a human tends to be, by this point he should be able to know very well where he is in relation to the outside, enhanced senses, but also he has his hands closed, a human reaction, to punch BUT ALSO IN HIS CASE TO EXTEND HIS BLADES.

He should know he's in a place with a shit ton of kids, he smells them all, he hears them. Or at least he should. BABY KITTY, BABY BOBBY MY POOR BABIES...

The I don't need medical attention line is simple yet... he says it more on the I DON'T NEED ANYONE'S HELP.

I love Scott, of the OG five he's my favorite, I'd go to war for him. HE WAS ONLY WRONG IN X-MEN VS AVENGERS AND I'LL DIE ON THE HILL THAT CHARLES HAD IT COMING.

Scott being slightly autistic is also one of my favorite HC, and it comes from certain moments in this movie, But what I like the most about Scott, is that at his core... SCOTT IS A GOOD MAN, A GOOD PERSON DESPITE ALL THE TRAUMA AND SHIT HE GOES THROUGH.

Shout out to the Goddess Ororo, who was underutilized in this movie, she's an Omega level for god's sake...

The chuckle about the names is earned, this movie tries to be serious when the naming is not very serious, in this aspect, the MCU has the upper hand, they never explain it or call it to attention, they just do it and the viewer also accepts it, if you call it to attention like here... you kinda ruin the suspension of credibility.

LOGAN MESSING WITH SCOTT FROM MOMENT 1 IS ALSO UNNECESSARY CAUSE I HONESTLY BELIEVE THAT THEY ARE AT THEIR BEST WHEN THEY TRUST EACH OTHER AND WORK TOGETHER. Besides you'll already mess up with the whole Jean thing later, there's no need now..

Charles getting in his head is a neat trick, it makes him seem less threatening, and showing the school is cool JUBILEEEEEEEEEEEEEE CAMEOO.

Bobby being a little shit is cute, OF COURSE SCOTT IS THE TEACHER OF MECHANICS....

Another interesting thing this movie does is to give us the 48 hours time frame, it stills a sense of urgency whether we know it or not.

I SEE NO DIFERENCE WITH REGISTERING HUMANS OR GUNS, ALL I SEE IS WEAPONS IN OUR SCHOOLS. FOR THE LOVE OF ALL THAT'S HOLY I'LL HONESTLY START SCREAMING IF ANYONE TRIES TO TELL ME THIS SCUMBAG IS RIGHT.

RAVEN RAVEEEEENNNNNN, ANOTHER QUEEN, gods she's so damn cool... I love her. The reveal is perfect, the way she prods Kelly and the way she reacts when he speaks... the way she EATS HIM UP... also her theme is fantastic, the scales is a nice way to translate her powers and give the visual efects team something to anchor the transformation.

QUICK SIDE NOTE, YOU GUYS BETTER NOT BE GETTING LOGAN IN A MRI MACHINE THOSE THINGS HAVE MAGNETS, VERY POWERFUL ONES... I hope you guys see the problem. Also trying to apologizing and flirting with the WOMAN WHO HAS A BOYFRIEND IS A BAD LOOK ON YOU BUB...

love the whole LOGAN IS OLDER THAN CHUCK fun quip. AND CHARLES REALIZING LOGAN MIGHT NOT BE THE ONE ERIK IS AFTER, he knows him well, he knows that it makes no sense for Erik to want to use Logan.

Kelly watching Toad eat the bird is the perfect unsetling little thing.

Erik and his god-fearing monologue is both true and effective. Also I CAN SEE THE REASONING BEHIND ERIK'S PLAN, if the powerful are like us they won't fear us and they'll have to help us... but buddy... the execution.... it's a bit... weak, also it leaves him completely powerless.

LOGAN PLEASE STOP FLIRTING WITH THE WOMAN WHO HAS ALREADY SAID HAS A BOYFRIEND... JEANIE LOVE YOU ARE A TELEPATH SCREAM IN HIS MIND TO STAY AWAY (I love them together in just the age of Apocalypse, sorry but I have tremendous issues with cheating and stealing someones partner due to personal circumstances) so no more talk about this sorry.

I do love Scott and Logan's banter, they're my boys... AND JAMES AND HUGH LOOK SO YOUNG, THEY'RE BABIESSSSS.

Obvious PTSD dreaming is obvious BUT AGAIN WE GET TO THE POINT, ROGUE CARES AND JUST WANTS TO HELP THE ONLY PERSON SHE TRUSTS RIGHT NOW, she's a good girl....

and the ABSOLUTE HORROR IN LOGAN'S FACE WHEN HE SEES HE HAS STABBED HIS KID... THAT'S HIS KID YOUR HONOR GIVE HIM THE ADOPTION PAPERS.

Kelly's scape is a bit weak in my opinion, but realizing you have become what you fear... is a good point to make your villain suffer... even if the effects do look a bit bad after 26 years...

The WTF face from Victor is epic by the way... he's like... NO KELLY? WHY NO KELLY? I HAD HIM... oh shit now I have to tell the boss....

Erik's I'M SURROUNDED BY IDIOTS expression is also hilarious.

Raven's Bobby is equal parts credible for Rogue and creepy for us, for her she is scared, she doesn't know him very well and she's already blaming herself. For us is a bit unsetteling, he semed nice... till we see the yellow eye....

ALSO CHARLES AND JEAN WHAT KIND OF TELEPATH CIRCUS ARE YOU RUNNING IN THAT SCHOOL THAT A SHAPESHIFTE ENTERS THE GOUNDS AND YOU DON'T NOTICE IT???? ARE WE BLIND? Logan giving advice sucks... but he tries so let's give him some points.

Also they try to alude to Marie's more mental powers in this scene but it doesn't work if they don't make the work to show it again.

I do like Logan tries to genuinely help her, and connect with her, and also protect her when Erik shows up. PAPA LOGAN REPORTING FOR DUTY.

Scott tries to be nice to the kid... poor boy... and poor Ororo gets the rough treatement from a very bored Victor.

Toad scores and also mess it up for his team, by opening the windows so Ororo can curl Victor's mane...

Erik got tired of waiting so he said I'M GETTING THIS GIRL MYSELF, he also delights in having fun with the guy who's ENTIRE SKELETON IS METAL... again points for Logan for trying, but Erik wins this one for the ONE LINER AND THE PRESENTATION, presentation is important guys, remember Megamind.

THE POICE SCENE IS ALSO ICONIC THIS ENTRIE MOVIE IS SO DAMN GOOD WE SHOULD LOVE IT MORE.

I also see it as a show off on the part of both Charles and Erik, and for the humans it must be really terryifing, but they both reach their limits, Charles is controlling both Toad and Victor, with one speaking and the other moving away towards them, and Erik has around 20 or 25 weapons in the air, with different trigger pressures, ready to shoot, when he says: I don't know if I'll be able to stop them all, he might be serious, he might not be able to shoot and stoop them all at the same time, bullet velocities are very differnt between rifles, revolvers and handhelds...

The helmet blocking Charles wasn't canon in the comics by that point by the way, so it was a nice surprise for even those who were fans for a long time.

Angry papa Logan getting mad at Chuck rules, but Ororo wiping the floor morally speaking with him rules even more.

Kelly being scared of a human hospital but still being angry at mutants is a good way to show why Erik's plan would ultimately fail, not only cause the mutation is unstable but cause you can't change someone's heart just like that. It would make them hate you even more. Like I said, I can understand the reasoning, the execution is just poor.

SCOTTY BEING THE SMART ONE AND FIGURING OUT WHY ROGUE IS WANTED IS A VERY NICE TOUCH, WE NEED MORE SMART SCOTT, HE'S ONE OF THE BEST STRATEGISTS OF THE DAMN MARVEL UNIVERSE FOR CRYING OUT LOUD.

Ororo being there for Kelly's death is such a sweet moment, they both are honest with each other, they both know he's dying, yet she doesn't leave him alone.

BURN THOSE UNIFORMS SORRY, BURN THEM, I HATE THEM WITH A DAMN PASSION.

The poisoning of Cerebro is a nice touch to make the team doubt themselves, and Scott's heart to heart with Charles is something so precious to me...

BACK TO THE BAD BOIS, VIC KILLS THE GUARD, WHICH WAS UNNECESARY CAUSE THE ONE IN THE BOAT IS RAVEN...

Fanfare for the humans being idiots close to the statue, Toad flattening the guys is funny though.

I hate Raven is not Marie's mom.

Erik is HONEST, is not the moment to be honest but at least he is honest with her.

The metal detector joke is funny... I guess... I'm more impressed with Raven's trick, but JEAN SHOULD BE ON HIGH FUCKING ALERT.

Logan vs Raven is rgeat, cause she tries to use some blades against him and he's like GIRL DON'T PLAY, so she has to scream when he cuts them, cause they're made out of her flesh.

Toad against Ro, Scott and Jean shouldn't be this easy... JEAN GET IT TOGETHER, they made her too dumb in this one sorry... They nerfed them all.

But Toad was smart; throwing whatever junk he did on Jean's face to try to suffocate her.

But EXTRAORDINARY USE OF RAY PARK WITH EVEN A SMALL NOD TO THE PHANTOM MENACE.

Raven landing solid hits is nice, but her feet should be broken after that kick to Logan's face twice... But him getting the jump on her with the smell is a nice trick.

Prove it's you: YOU'RE A DICK... I love it, epic no notes.

Again Erik with the presentation, I love a diva, and the school burn... No notes.

Another monologue... Erik we're running out of movie timeeeeee....

PAPA LOGAN TO THE FUCKING RESCUE LIKE THE MADMAN HE IS LITERALY STABBING HIMSELF TO RIP FREE.

And the cat fight starts:

Victor takes the advantage by swinging Logan, but Logan doesn't give up and stabs him, gets his dog tags back, Victor tries to throw Logan away but he defies physics by swinging back from the crown in a movement that looks a bit funky but who are we to judge... he then gets dstracted and almost trhown off the head for good, dangling by the blades.

The machine starts working and Victor tries again to harrass Ororo, but our favorite BUB is back to give Scottie a boost.

Planing 2.0, Using Logan cause he's much more heavy is very ingenious.

SCOTT SHOOTING AT ERIK INSTEAD OF THE MACHINE IS ALSO SMART.

Jean reacting to the radiation is a very smart hint about the Phoenix being burried in her, I like it.

FOR THE FOURTH TIME IN THE DAMN MOVIE PAPA LOGAN TO THE RESCUE BY USING HIS POWERS TO HELP HIS KID.

AND WE KNOW IT'S WORKING CAUSE WE SEE THE MARKS OF VICTOR'S CUTS ON HIM.

Raven being alive is a nice touch, but what about the others???

ABOUT TIME YOU ALSO WAKE UP CHUCK.

Worried papa Logan is happy his plan worked, and I like that they again mention about Rogue's change in presonality.

FINAL GOODBYE TIMESSS the scene is cute and a good ending, I really like it, the dog tags is a cute touch.

I do love this movie so much no matter how much time it passes.

And again he steals a bike... we had to end the movie in a crime of course.

HIS FACE IS HILARIOUS, HE SMIRKS KNOWING HE'S GOING TO GET ON SCOTT'S NERVES.

The chess scene.... I love this... they are still just good friends playing chess, two old friends in the park.... and the veiled threat IT'S FUCKING PEAK WITH THE ICONIC X-MEN THEME BLASTING IN A CRESCENDO....
