Iced Tea Ingredients:

Lemon juice 1 cup and zest of 1 lemon - for energy, joy and purification. Element is water.

Edible fresh lavender 1/3 cup (half this if dried) - for love, peace and dreams. Element is air.

Black tea bag or half tablespoon of loose leaf - for courage, alertness and wealth. Element is earth.

Caster sugar half a cup - for attraction and sweetness

Water 4 cups

Method:

Add lemon zest, lavender, sugar and tea bag in two cups of boiling water. Stir to dissolve sugar. Think of your intention whilst stirring clockwise. Steep for 1 hour in the sun.

Strain liquid. For stronger flavour don't strain. Add lemon juice and remaining water.

Allow to chill in fridge.

A tea spell for getting past emotional pain/exhaustion and bringing in comfort and self love -💌

Collect: a mug, vanilla black tea (or black tea and vanilla extract), cinnamon, milk (or milk substitute), honey, rose quartz and/or amethyst

Take your mug and put in your tea bag with a sprinkle of cinnamon (and vanilla extract if you’re using that)

Fill up the mug with milk and heat it to your desired temperature

Take a heaping spoonful of honey and stir it in, clockwise to bring comforting/empowering energy and counterclockwise to banish negativity and emotional pain

Charge your tea with the rose quartz and/or amethyst

Sit down with your tea

Put your hands around the mug and feel the warmth and comfort

For me it tends to be a three step process:

Cleansing. Physically, mentally, spiritually. Take a bath/shower, play some music that makes you happy, do some cleansing (I like to do smoke cleansing when I’m in a funk, since it feels more tangible for me than other forms of cleansing).

Relaxing. There’s a reason you’re burned out. Set aside a chunk of time and focus on the little things. Make a cup of tea (witch it up), and do whatever your soul needs. Could be sitting outside, curling up with a book, creating something or watching a movie. Be gentle with yourself.

Recharging. What energizes you? What makes you feel alive in a good way? Eat food that feels good, move your body in a way that feels good, draw energy from whatever sources you get it from (some examples in the chronic fatigue post linked above).

This can be on whatever scale works for you. A quick morning or evening routine, a day set aside for it, over the course of a week or month, something you do daily. The steps can also happen in whatever order works or all happen at once! Don’t underestimate the little things you do each day and the influence they can have over time.

So you want to celebrate your own wheel of the year, but you are not Wiccan (or maybe not a Celtic Polytheist or Heathen Polytheist when it comes to the specific Celtic or Heathen holidays)?  Why not try making your own wheel of the year to celebrate nature or your own holidays?

Note:  It’s important that if you do this, you do not try to make your own holiday yet still call it by another name.  For instance: if you make a holiday around February 1st and give your own attributes to it, it’s important to not call it “Imbolc”.  Imbolc is a specific holiday with its own customs used to celebrate Brigid.  If you want to celebrate Imbolc, then celebrate Imbolc.  If you’re not celebrating Imbolc, don’t call it Imbolc.  Make sense?

Second Note: The solstice and equinox holidays will be named as such, and the cross quarter holidays will be referred to as “mid-x”. Note, this is a bit different than what you may be used to since the solstice holidays are sometimes referred to as such. Ex: summer solstice as “mid-summer”. For the purposes of this post, only the cross quarter days will be referred to in that way. Just fyi to avoid confusion. I’m referring to them as “mid” because they are in the middle of the season.

Now, onto the ideas:

❄️ Winter Solstice (Usually somewhere between Dec 20th-22nd): Celebrate family, holiday cheer, resolve any old issues you’ve had this year, look back on the year and what you have done. What have you learned?? You can also celebrate this as a time of new beginnings.  Since the sun is returning and the days will be growing longer: you can view this as your new year.  Make witchy resolutions, or any new year resolutions!! Celebrate winter festivities and the return of the sun

🕯Mid-winter (Feb. 1st-2nd): I view this holiday as a time for purification.  Get rid of any bad habits.  Cleanse yourself and your house.  Do some spring cleaning. Celebrate the growing strength of the sun, and celebrate the coming spring as well!!

🌹Spring Equinox (Typically between March 19th-21st): I view this time of year as a time for growth.  This corresponds with the growing signs of spring in the environment.  The days getting warmer, etc.  Take the time to do spells that correspond with your growth as witch or just as a human being.  This time is heavily associated with fertility. But this could be fertility of many things - talents, the mind, imagination, projects, etc! Try out new things, practice the things you love to do, etc. Maybe even grow a garden as well.  Remember the new years resolution you made at the Winter Solstice? Now would be the time to make sure you’re bringing the list to fruition! Also, celebrate spring festivities!

💞 Mid-Spring (May 1st-2nd):  For me, this time of year is about life and love. Celebrate life by helping others around you: donate food, money, or your time. This holiday can be a time for charity and giving to others. I specifically view this time as a celebration of life and the living because the opposite cross quarter day would be Mid-Autumn (Halloween), which is a day to celebrate the dead. You can also spend this holiday appreciating the life of nature by spending time outside, building a bonfire, going for a walk, or tending/creating a garden. You can also celebrate this holiday as a holiday for love - spend time with your loved ones! Do something special for them. For other’s, this time of year may also correspond with sex as well. Oh, and celebrate the coming of summer time!!

🌞 Summer Solstice (Typically between June 20th-22nd):  For me, this is a time for power.  Celebrate your power and magic as a witch.  I personally believe this is the day of the year when the power of the earth is strongest.  Some view this time as a day when the veil between worlds thins. Especially in regards to the Fae. So you could take advantage of that. Also, celebrate summer!  Woohoo Summer!!! Spend your days at the pool, hanging out outside….or inside where there’s air conditioning. Whatever works for you.

🍞 Mid-Summer (August 1st-2nd): First harvest.  Time for feasting.  Reap what you have sown so far throughout the year.  I correspond this holiday with food - specifically grain. Celebrate the earth and the food that it provides you. Also, celebrate the coming of Fall!! (My favorite season of the year)

🍂 Autumn Equinox (Typically between Sept 21st-24th): Second Harvest. Witchy Thanksgiving.  List all the things you are thankful for, and celebrate them! Do some Autumn festivities, and celebrate Autumn (arguably the best time of the year ;)

🎃 Mid-Autumn/Halloween (October 31st-November 2nd): The final harvest. The opposite of Mid-Spring which celebrates life, Mid-Autumn celebrates the dead/our ancestors. Do something nice to remember those who have past. Also, celebrate the coming of winter!

Not every witch reveres the Earth, but a lot of us do. When, for example, science tells us the relative age of the planet, we don't have to thumb through an old book to find a disagreeing figure. Whenever science tells us something about the Earth, it is a wondrous discovery. It is information that further describes the divinity we see in nature. Witches have often been called stewards of the Earth. When science tells us the Earth is in danger and there are things we can do to stop it, we take this very seriously.

Every witch author I grew up reading seemed to agree on one principle: Magick is not your only solution. Magick is a tool you use to bolster your efforts toward achieving what you want. Witches do not float through life waiting for a higher power to answer our prayers. We are active agents in shaping our own lives.

When you are unemployed, you do a prosperity spell AND go job hunting. When you don't have all the answers, you use divination AND seek out new information. When you are sick, you seek medical treatment AND cast a healing spell. Magick is not a substitute for medical treatment, and it sure as hell isn't a substitute for VACCINES. Magick does not invalidate all the breakthrough medical discoveries that can be used to save lives. Magick is to be used in conjunction with medicine.

Witchcraft has often been called the "craft of the wise" and there are certainly witches out there who love to tout themselves as wise. Disavowing science for any reason other than better science is not wisdom. That is ignorance.

It's important to remember that there is more to science than simply physical science. The social sciences are important too. In psychology and sociology, the function of ritual is well established. Ritual helps tune the human mind into a desired pattern and connects communities of people together. The ritual need not be religious or magickal for this to occur. A birthday party, a baby shower, or a meal after a ball game can be a ritual, and so can a spell or sabbat ceremony.

When witches use spells or other magickal techniques to affect their mood or mental state, these rituals can have actual psychological effects. When witches gather together for a spell or ritual, they can generate what sociologist Emile Durkheim called "collective effervescence," a phenomenon common in all religious/spiritual groups. Collective effervescence describes individuals in a group coming together to share the same thoughts and actions and create an excitement of emotion. There are of course pros and cons to this phenomenon, but the results are still real to those experiencing them.

There is a reason alchemy and chemistry contain the same root word. Alchemy, a medieval practice attempting to use magic to transform matter, was the precursor to chemistry, the science of how substances react to each other. The old arts of herbalism and midwifery, commonly ascribed to "witches," gave birth to the field of medicine. The pursuit of magick lead directly to the creation of science.

Lastly, I want to discuss the notion that a lack of scientific proof of magick is evidence that magick is not real. First of all, several phenomena once labeled as magic have been scientifically proven and explained. Second, science never claims to have found an ultimate answer. Science tells us what might be "true" to the best of our current knowledge, and always allows for the appearance of new knowledge to change what we know to be "true." Even scientific laws such as gravity and light are subject to scrutiny should new information be discovered. To claim something is not "real" because it has not yet been proven demonstrates a fundamental lack of understanding of scientific principles and the history of scientific discovery as a whole.

Ultimately, you are all allowed to formulate your own opinions on this topic, and to agree, disagree, and expand on mine. But none of that will ever shake my own truth, which is that witchcraft has created both value and results in my own life. Disagree all you want, but your opinion cannot change what I have already experienced.
