for my tim at least, he’s pretty much always been on the chubby side. janet was relatively strict with his diet because he wasn’t dropping baby fat as quickly as most children do, but his nanny would sneak him junk food behind her back and it was like..... a big taboo thing for him as a kid.

and then as he started getting older and it was more apparent that this was Just His Body Type, he started becoming a lot more self conscious about it. his body image is also greatly exacerbated by his oc.d, and when he was younger and less able to like... ignore it, he did fall into some pretty bad eating habits. never bad enough to be super dangerous, but it still wasn’t healthy. there was a lot of guilt and shame that revolved around eating. most of the time the only meal a day he would have would be dinner (occasionally he would fall into fits of binge eating, and then go a day or so without eating to “make up for it”), and he had (and still has) a very methodical way to eat to make it “okay”. anything that can be cut up gets cut up, and he always eats things one at a time going clockwise. he still has a lot of embarrassment revolving around eating in front of people, because he knows this isn’t a “””normal””” thing to do. 

becoming robin didn’t really help with his body image either. like... he was extremely physically average on top of being a chubby kid, so busting his ass to get even half as good as jason and dick became a new focus for him. he doesn’t build muscle in the same sorts of ways that dick, jason or bruce do; he’s muscular, but there’s still a layer of fat that he can’t seem to get rid of no matter what and it drives him up the fucking wall.
