yesterday i was at the woodworking store getting a knife sharpener because i've been really into whittling hair sticks out of hardwoods which dulls your blades like mad. and the lady who was helping me said "oh yeah i know the feeling of jumping into a project that turns out more complex, that's how i feel about my cable knit right now"
which in turn activated my sleeper autist, and we ended up talking about fiber arts, where i learned that this woman is part of the local lacemaker's guild and uses her woodworking experience to carve lace bobbins on the lathe. she then gave me the email address of the woman who runs it, because their group has no social media and only meets when the lead lady says 'everyone come to my house.'
while all of this was going on, another woman walks up. her partner was shopping for wood repair stuff and she heard us talking about fiber- she's a spinner who does historical reenactments nearby. period accurate, processes the wool herself. of course i ask her if they need volunteers and she gives me her contact info
long story short. autism is everywhere you look and you have to be okay with chatting with strangers. i don't remember where this post was going
even if jk rowling wasn’t a bigoted jackass i think i would not associate with harry potter just because of how over-the-top embarrassing the fandom is
and to be clear the idea of “separating the art from the artist” is kinda bullshit because:
1. the artist is still alive and benefitting from you engaging with the art
2. the art is deeply fucking reflective of every single (and there’s so many) way(s) the author is bigoted as fuck.
compare hp lovecraft, who also wrote a bunch of stuff that was obscenely racist. however, hp lovecraft is dead as shit and can’t do anything bad with the money. jk rowling is using your money from harry potter merch to wreck the lives of minorities
also harry potter really just is bigoted in every way possible. i don’t think i can think of a single minority that doesn’t at least have a problematic depiction alluding to them
Well, that answers that regarding the elf stones, I guess.
THAT MEANS WRONGO'S GOT THEM. THIS ISN'T GOOD

Love the bot summoning incantation
Our county has been hit with so many disasters this summer I'm starting to suspect it's populated solely by AO3 authors.
Okay, real talk, the AO3 curse isn't real but the state of emergency in northwest Indiana right now is.
If you're in need of assistance, NWI 211 is a great place to start: https://in211.communityos.org/. It's a free service that connects you with help related to food, shelter, disaster relief, employment assistance, and lots of other things.
There is a NWI subreddit full of locals discussing the disaster and word-of-mouth resources: https://www.reddit.com/r/nwi/new/ Now, this is reddit, so vet any resource you come across, but you may get leads on organizations providing meals, local folks sharing equipment, or even just some very exciting NIPSCO truck sightings to keep morale up.
And of course, your library is here for you. Many of our branches are without power, but the ones that have power have wifi accessible from the parking lot from 5 AM to 10 PM every day even if the building isn't open. Keep an eye on www.lcplin.org for the list of branches with power and the hours for building access so you can get some AC, a place to charge your devices, and some analog reading material. The home page will list the branches as they are restored.
Outside of our system, we have heard the Crown Point Community Library (https://crownpointlibrary.org/) and Hammond Public Library (https://www.hammondlibrary.org/) have power and are open regular hours!
Stay safe out there, everyone <3
In your next life.
thank you
see when people try and nitpick me because i call my dog "my dog" when it's technically "the family dog".......well first of all i still call my brother "my brother" and not "the family boy". although maybe that should change. second of all sorry i'm still thinking about the family boy. btw i fell asleep while making this post last night and i think you can tell
Very tenuous link to one of my favourite tweets

British taxpayers subsidised ‘therapeutic healing’ for IDF soldiers after Israeli charity claimed Gift Aid, Declassified investigation finds
An Israeli organisation received a donation from a UK based charity that was able to claim Gift Aid adding an additional 25% from the British Government.
The money has disgustingly went towards a ‘therapeutic healing journey’ for IDF soldiers returning from Gaza.
There’s a trend in all conflict that massacring civilians can cause immense psychological damage - who would have thought it?
Horrendous that GiftAid was used to increase the money the charity received.
And on yesterday’s topic of personal grooming, at the risk of sounding like a looksmaxxer, you really do feel better when you feel like you look better. Putting the slightest bit of effort into your appearance can do wonders for your mental health. There is a reason every single culture on earth has grooming and styling standards and cultural forms of personal adornment and (often) bodily modification. I’m autistic and chronically ill and depressed and it is something I’ve experienced first hand. Not having the strength or desire to put effort into my appearance is demoralizing and then I’ll get dressed and style my hair and put on jewelry and a little glam rock makeup and realize it does make me feel better. These are things in my control, my appearance, things that I can change and tweak to make me feel better about myself even when the changes run counter to societal expectations and trends. There are a lot of men who feel like they are ugly (or have a sense of toxic masculinity that makes them feel like they shouldn’t groom themselves because it is somehow only for women) who would feel better if they just got a haircut and a new shirt. Not only is practicing basic hygiene when going out in public and dressing appropriately for events common courtesy but it does make you feel better about yourself. Get that haircut, get that tattoo, get that piercing, wear something weird.
To all of our brave service members trapped on the USS Lincoln right now, from the bottom of my heart I would like to say LOL.
“Navy sailors are killing themselves because they’re trapped on a busted ass raggedy ship with no soap and bad food.” And not because they’re tools of American imperialism fighting a monstrously cruel nothingburger war? Okay.
It is crazy to see politicians and random public figures come out and be like “Yeah, destroying Iranian infrastructure and bombing children is whatever but you can’t treat our brave little soldiers like this!”
Soldiers and veterans are likely more a victim of the USA military industrial complex than you are.
Well yeah, I didn’t roll over and lick boots, waiting to be stepped on. Victims can be perpetrators, these two things can coexist. Military recruiters can prey on low-income areas and our government can send mass amounts of young people to go die for oil and then treat them like shit when they return broken. That doesn’t erase the fact these people signed up to be tools of American imperialism, that doesn’t erase the fact they’re killing people overseas simply for their own financial gain. They are in a situation they put themselves in and they are complaining about the negative consequences that being at war and killing people is having on their brains and bodies.
btw if youre young and scared of doing adult things without your parents ive learned that like 90% of the time you can just tell the doctors office or the dmv "haha sorry ive never done this without help before... can you show me how to do this?" the employee will not care. if that means anything to you
literally walked up to a desk in the courthouse, said "is this where I register a car or is it the next one?" and she said it was the next one. and the lady at the next desk helped me. it feels embarrassing but I promise you can just ask
One of the most important lessons I learned in customer service is that no matter how much help you need, as long as you're nice about it, you won't even crack the top five of worst customers they've had to deal with that day. I will walk an old lady through every step on that pin pad with a smile as long as she's polite, because two calls ago I had to deal with someone screaming about politics for 45 fucking minutes because I wasn't allowed to hang up on him.
Everyone has their first time doing something, everyone makes mistakes, everyone has dumb moments, and as long as you're choosing kindness I'll just laugh it off and help out. Because no matter how dumb you think you are, there was already someone who was just as dumb but was determined to ruin my day over it.
