I 100% SUBNAUTICA!!!
I purchased the game 10 (going on 11) years ago with the $20 Steam gift card that I got for my 10th birthday. I am 20 now and finally beat the game for the first time.
Took me long enough, here are my thoughts:
No game better encompasses my combination of fear, awe, love, and wonder for the ocean than Subnautica. The flora, fauna, and environments all have such an amazingly handcrafted nature to them while *still making ecological sense*. Sure, you might say, leviathan-class lifeforms probably wouldn’t exist. But Aha, I say to you, not only are they not all entirely apex superpredators (the largest of the bunch Adult Ghost & Sea Emperors are Filter Feeders), but the jump height on land gives the impression that 4546B has *lower gravity* and therefore COULD better support double-a-schoolbus superpredators and 8-blue-whale filter feeders.
But that’s an aside for the specbio nerd within me. What is the game like? Beautiful and well crafted for one, but also with a wonderful degree of freedom. The bacterial infection seems to provide a motivation to figure the story out quick, but it’s entirely constructed, and the game lends itself very well to taking your time and appreciating the details.
There’s very little grind, but just enough to make accomplishments feel like accomplishments. The base building is rudamentary but amazingly fun, the scary creatures are amazingly constructed horror (hence why it took me 10 years to get to the game), and the experience as a whole is something I would reccomend to anyone who loves horror, the deep sea, and/or survival crafting games.
Absolute and deserved 10/10. Just enough water
