The man with the eyepatch and the bulging muscles lays Aether out on the ship’s deck like he’s a cut of Inazuman sashimi.

The late noon sun blazes overhead as the ship creaks with motion. Aether would flinch from the wood splinters that poke into his back and between his scales if he could move. Somehow, the fishermen have rendered him immobile from head to tail. He remembers hearing something—an unpleasant shrill magnified and unrestrained as it passed through the water—before all the muscles in his body went limp. Only once the fishermen hauled him aboard their trawler in a weighted net did he start to regain feeling in his limbs…

On the first night that they’re intimate, Aventurine lays himself out like he’s used to: wrists crossed over his head, legs split apart, eyes closed tight.

He feels the bed sink beneath Ratio’s weight, feels the heat of thick thighs closing around his hips and pinning him. His fingers curl, but he doesn’t lower his arms; muscle memory catches him before he can.

Ratio’s breath is warm against his eyelids as he folds over him. They come together like magnets. Usually, Aventurine likes when they get close. It means he isn’t repellant, at least for the moment. Now he tenses, his body stiffening into a rigid line. Maybe it’s because he’s naked, but it feels like Ratio can suddenly see the gloss of filth that coats his skin. Maybe it’s why Ratio pauses…
