There’s a couple other things I was thinking about and wanted to say regarding Taylor’s trial. A lot of you have already so perfectly expressed how amazing everything she did was, but I’ve seen comments on the negative side of it too, like her celebrity etc, and I just had some thoughts.
First, recently another Swiftie here bravely shared her story of going to court and went into just how scary and stressful it can be. And if you’ve never gone through the process, you might not fully understand. Including everything a person has to go through leading up to the trial itself- discovery, depositions, mediation, etc. All of these processes are not only extremely stressful from a paperwork/work standpoint, but emotionally and physically. Even when you are the victim, the accuser, the innocent; the other side will do everything they can to absolutely tear you apart. They will dig up every tiny detail they can about you, whether it has anything at all to do with the case or not. They want to discredit you as a person, so they attack you as a person. They will dig into your social media, contact all old employers back to when you were a dumb teenager working a retail job, they’ll look at anything they can and lay it all out to bear before you as a discredit to you as a person and try to scare you into backing down. Every and any mistake you’ve ever made, no matter how small, in your entire life will be found and used against you. Think about that, what that would be like.
Now think about Taylor. Yes, she’s rich and famous- but that, in this case, actually probably made this process so much worse for her- her life has been so public, her opposition had a LOT to easily dig up and try to twist to use against her. I cannot even imagine the things they might have tried to break her with by showing to her in depositions. How they probably made her cry, made her so frustrated- but she kept going, she pushed on. She could have settled long before, without going to trial and making any of this public. But she made the choice, the VERY brave choice, to let it go to trial, which meant allowing the opposition to literally talk shit about her in court, in public on the record, to try to tear her down and break her as a person. But she did this anyway. And she did it, all of it, for no financial reward. Yes, perhaps she didn’t need the money, so people could say that was easy for her. I think, however, she thought about all of the people who weren’t rich or famous who had been through an assault, who perhaps could need that financial restitution, who she was setting a legal precedent for. She was breaking the silence and paving a way for others who do not have the financial or celebrity power that she does so that they may feel better about coming forward. She was giving them, us, a voice. She did that. And I think that’s really important to remember and to thank her for. Taylor Swift did that. Thank you, @taylorswift. 💝💕
