【新美香 lor mee】 Michelin Bib Gourmand recommended and all round legendary Xin Mei Xiang Old Airport Road has a shop along Balestier Road. I dropped by for breakfast on a rainy Wednesday morning. What struck me about Xin Mei Xiang’s lor mee most of all was the sauce: the smooth consistency and vinegar-tinged flavour reminded me of shark’s fin soup at a Chinese wedding dinner. 【美佳海鲜餐館 – dinner】 Bee Kia’s black bean sauce beef hor fun came highly recommended by @wheelswheelsandmeals, so I would be remiss had I passed on the chance to try it even though I’d already had lunch there that day. Bee Kia’s offering is a different take from Sun Seng’s Gourmet Corner at Chinatown Complex. At Bee Kia, the rice noodles and beef take on a red-brown hue from their time in the wok, while at Sun Seng they act as vehicles for the sauce, which brings the wok hei. I still love you, though!): Vault City Brewing’s take on that quintessential Scottish soft drink. It turns out that there are many Irn Bru-inspired beers out there so Vault City aren’t the first to do this, but you can believe me when I say that they have done it very successfully. 【Gyoza World Dominion】 A very happy return to Keisuke Group’s Gyoza King at Orchid Hotel. When we last left you, dear viewer, I was extolling the virtues of Gyoza King’s 5-gyoza-and-supporting-band set meal act. I want to add that dining in a pair might well be the optimal way to go at Gyoza King. That way, you get that sweet spot of being able to sample more and enough of the side dishes (and types of gyoza if you so choose). Not many photos of the food this time around – chicken nanban and agedashi tofu aren’t very photogenic – but what I can offer you is a very nicely posed photo of Keisuke’s exclusive wasabi ginger ale next to the container of moyashi (slightly spicy bean sprout salad); a skill that I’ve cultivated over many check-ins on Untappd. IYKYK 😉🍻 The lighting at the stove seemed to play well with the filter I’ve used to edit these photos. 2 Nov 2021. 「Gyoza no Ohsho」 I’d been jonesing for gyoza since walking past Keisuke’s Gyoza King on the way to dinner the previous week, so it was off to Japanese-style Chinese diner Gyoza no Ohsho to get my fix. (In a further twist, the staff at this eatery are a mix of Chinese from the region and PRC) Other than the gyoza (yummy) and tebasaki (a bit too salty), the tenshinhan — rice topped with an egg omelette and slathered in thick gravy — was hot, hearty, and overall a good main dish. 5 Nov 2021. 「Mad for Garlic」 It’s been many MANY years since my first time at Mad for Garlic. It so happened that I had a SingTel Step Up voucher to use so that made a good reason to go. The sausage and ham pizza was decent, but the real star of the show was the Dracula Killer — cloves of garlic doused in olive oil and oven roasted in a ramekin meant for escargot and served with lightly toasted baguette. 27 Oct 2021. 「Chooby Pizza x Brewlander」 Many thanks to @Brewlander and @choobypizza for organising the giveaway of a meal for two with beers thrown in! I’m VERY partial to Italian wood fired pizza, so you can imagine the joy that the margherita pizza brought to my heart. The coconut chicken pizza was well executed, and introduced some local flair to counterbalance the traditional. Speaking of balance, the theme was continued in the beers for the evening: Brewlander’s Beware the Seagulls English bitter and XPA American pale ale. Fittingly, the bitter paired well with the margherita and the APA with the coconut chicken. We ordered the beer-battered white bait to go the pizzas and (like just about everything else), it was fantastic! 💯 going to come back again. I loved the fried 流沙包 and the 莲蓉包 (not pictured), while @twogreensquarefeet enjoyed the mee sua kuey (like a fried yam cake but made of mee sua). The 麻辣拉面 photographed nicely but was a bit much, and a little incongruous with the rest of the meal. Fast, efficient service, reasonable prices (I over-ordered, tipsy as I was from beers at Orh Gao Taproom earlier that afternoon).
