The question [somehow] is if this scene took place in Shiro and Adam’s personal quarters or in some sort of lounge. Hint- it’s a lounge.
From what we saw in s7, this Galaxy Garrison base has a regular occupancy of around 500 people. And we’ll say of that, 200 of them are like Sam Holt and live in the adjacent town(s) with their families. That leaves us with ~300 bodies to house.
Multi-family, apartments, barracks, whatever you want to call it, this type of housing is never known for being lucrative in size. It’s all about cost economy (aka- fitting as many people into as little space as legally possible).
Cadets are likely allotted an 8′-0″ x 10′-0″ bedroom, and we’ll assume the GG is generous and gives them a kitchenette and en suite bathroom. So overall a 2-bedroom cadet living quarters would be a whopping 430 square feet (SF). Hint- a 3 bedroom home in the U.S. averages between 1,200 and 1,500 SF.
And low ranking officers like Lieutenant Shirogane and his partner Adam really are not going to get much better. They likely would have been upgraded to a space which would include a modest full kitchen, bathroom, and (score!) an actual living room. So we’ll say a 1 bedroom for a couple such as Shiro and Adam would have been 700 - 800 SF. At best, the kitchen of an 800 SF unit is going to have 10 - 14 linear feet of cabinetry and may accommodate 2 bar stools.
The space Shiro meets Adam in has closer to 25 - 30 linear feet and easily fits 4 bar stools. This in conjunction with the ceiling layout, I’d estimate this kitchen / living space is between 800 and 900 SF. Which means if we were to tack on a bedroom and bathroom for the couple and call this their home, we’d be looking at quarters close in size to a 2 bedroom detached home. Nevermind the other evidence, the personal photo(s), large variety of seating options, “2″ means of egress, and the additional people in the space, the GG isn’t giving living quarters that luxurious to low ranking officers.
Conclusion- Shiro and Adam are the messy level of disaster that has life-changing personal arguments in completely public spaces for everyone to witness …I wonder who hacked the video feed in order to save the moment for posterity.
I had a day off from work. And. Guys. I did a thing. Introducing: Keith’s Desert Shack Known colloquially as a sad excuse for a home. Though. If I’m being honest, this was once the Cadillac of shacks. Just look at that clerestory window. This project was really fun for me since I was working with visual cues rather than written ones. To create this, I used the shack scenes from S1E1 Pilot and S2E8 Blade of Marmora Trial. A few things to note: First, I based the size of the shack off of (1) how many people could fit in it and (2) the beams seen in the roof of the shack- beams generally are placed around 12’-0” on center and there’s roughly 2’-0” on either end making this space a whomping 16’-0” x 16’-0” Second, there were a few illustration errors. The first was a small window located adjacent to Keith’s conspiracy board. Since it’s only shown in one clip in the pilot and not shown on the exterior facade, I elected to leave it off the plan view. The second error required more thought. From the exterior facade, we can see the front wall has a door and a large-ish window on it. But when we get a better look at this wall’s interior in S2E8 we see a desk, door, and a significant lack of window. I couldn’t chalk this up as a blip since the exterior facade is seen multiple times so what I ended up doing was locating the door closer to the center of the wall to allow for the desk and window. Next item is the unit located next to the shack. My first instinct was that this is some kind of storage unit. But after I noticed the lack of outhouse, I thought this may be more of a “bunker” situation with a small, but usable, bathroom that also has a storage component with a proper seal so Keith can store his more valuable items away from weather. Lastly, furniture. I’m pretty sure this furniture was lifted from a 1970’s principal’s office- the aesthetic is too appropriate for it to be anything else. That or maybe they were just trying to match the dated equipment in the shack? Either way, it amuses me.
