Yeah, it's time to get this post out again
used to think it terribly silly (and kinda funny) when fantasy or sci-fi stories would have people refer to major recent historical events as The Flood or The Incident or The Revolution, and im sure historians fucking hate that because it's not helpful or descriptive, but we sure do be calling it The Pandemic
Also the new linguistic quirk of just saying “it was 2020” as like. The full end of a story. You say “it was 2020” and everyone knows what you mean.
“I was going to get my masters degree but then it was 2020, so yeah”
“I was cast in a play and then it was 2020”
“my boyfriend proposed but then it was 2020”
ive recently been fond of lonely little orphan boy wars who joined the army to prove his own worth and ended up being thrust into a important position he wasn’t fully ready for…going from nobody to somebody overnight…
okay say what you will about Owen Lars (bc I know no one is talking smack about Saint and Saviour Beru Lars), but that 'Anakin was a smuggler' line is genius.
Like, Luke your father was a drug smuggler and so we don't talk about him. Your father was a drug runner and he crossed the line from Good Person to criminal and drug peddler and brought shame on our family. Luke, your father was a drug dealer and he was involved in shady things and it really hasn't been that long and people are probably after him to this day and we have to keep our heads down and stay safe. Luke, your father made it so that we have to pay the consequences of his actions. Made it so that you, Luke Skywalker, can't sing with the stars that call your name because of what he did whilst racing among them.
Luke, your father was a bad man who did bad things, but they were choices, and you can make different ones. You share his last name but you don't share his greed. Luke, addiction is genetic but your father wasn't a drug addict. He was a drug smuggler. He chose to became part of a system that exploits pain and fear, but his decision isn't running through your bones. Luke, you're kind and good and have reached nineteen, on a planet made to break things, whole and gentle.
Luke, my love, you're better than him.

Do you think Clark Kent's first few major articles were about the continued presence of lead pipes in parts of Metropolis' water system
(Average Metropolis reader after investigative reporter C. Kent's 452nd article on yet another case of landlords/business owners/factories' continued use of lead pipes/paint/gas/glass knowingly exposing the public to dangerously toxic lead levels) what the fuck happened to this guy
One day Bruce Wayne mentions in an interview that heroes like Superman are overrated, as the most effective way to reduce crime is to provide public resources and improve local infrastructure, then cites how neighboring city Metropolis has effectively lowered their violent crime by 13% after addressing their outdated water system and investing low income housing. the reporter conducting the interview suddenly starts looking a little uncomfortable
To be clear, Clark is still a fantastic investigative reporter. He still has to track down the sources to prove all this shit
"Who, Clark Kent? Yeah, we're pretty sure he's a Meta. Is he a superhero? Like what, "Lead-detector guy"? "Captain pipes?" Don't get me wrong, he's a great guy and it's a handy trick, but it's lead detection, not laser vision. He's not about to go running around in tights any time soon."
I just love the idea of a cape maintaining their secret identity by pretending to be a completely different and less impressive kind of parahuman.
everyone assumes that kent is so squirrely around superheros because he’s just desperately hoping not to be conscripted to the JLA to fix their plumbing
Local Metropolis Reporter Publically Recognized For Contributions To The City; Awarded Medal Of Distinction
They tried to get superman to present the medal but he was offended at being called "overrated" in comparison to Clark so he declined
Counter offer: Bruce Wayne disguised as Superman

Hey this was a real fun little read. It's so great to find these treasures on this site

Going from being an introverted lurker on reddit to trying to post my own stuff here is so wild. I keep typing out a post, deleting it, then retyping because I think it's not good enough but then I look at other posts and why am I so worried?
It's like I'm at a fancy Italian restaurant and keep glancing around the room to see which hand people use to pick up the forks. But then I realize that everyone is shoveling spaghetti into their mouths using their bare hands and I'm like ah okay so I'm clearly overthinking this
This restaurant is absolute chaos and I'm giving it 5 stars

Don't be shackled by the idea that going out can only be done with a group of friends, learn to feel comfortable going alone [remembers that encouraging consumerism isn't progressive] into the deep dark woods

I will revive this series once I’m out of the trenches I swear chat
The fun part about taking one semester of Latin in university is that it's the class where I learned the most about English as a language.
English class in high school, at least in my part of the world, is actually a literary course, not a language or grammar/spelling course. Your teacher might teach some grammer but it's more about being read a text and trying to understand what the author is trying to say or do with the piece. Important, but maybe not accurately named. At any rate, I learned grammar and spelling because I read a lot as a kid, not because I remember being taught.
But back to Latin!
University is the first time I can remember where anybody taught a new language by tearing down the language you're already familiar with. You need to be to recognize what role a word is playing in the sentence in order to accurately translate it. Fir example, there is a difference between the noun performing an action and the noun that is the recipient of the action. In English, this tends to matter more with verbs (as in we need to look at the subject doing the verb to know if we use "was" or "were") but in languages like Latin, the noun changes too. You need to understand what "case" each word is in because sometimes a singular noun has the same spelling as a plural noun.
So yeah, the breakdown of English to learn Latin was absolutely vital. Is it kind of embarrassing that I learned what an adverb actually is in university because I took Latin? Yes.
But do I understand the way English works better? Also yes.
