Does anyone else out there prefer whumperless whump? I feel like I'm alone out here. Don't get me wrong, whumpers are still lovely fun, but there's something so delicious about the unforgiving cruelty of happenstance. There's something about the cold indifference of accidents, the wilderness, battlefields, illness, etc, that enthrall me in a way that a malicious individual whumper cannot. And don't even get me STARTED on self-inflicted whump (hidden injuries, overexertion, and self-deprivation will always be my bread and butter). I think it's the hopelessness of it, and the way it shifts the focus onto the whumpee's inner thoughts and/or their caretakers'.
Sure, you can punch a whumper. But you can NEVER punch the cruelty of the universe itself <3
Who's with me?
This gets me curious actually. I doubt you're alone in that preference so let's find out!
Whump with a whumper or without?
With a whumper
Whumperless
Mostly whumperless whumper here!
I'm sure someone in the comments has said it but only about 7 years ago whump fiction generally didn't contain a whumper at all- in fact "whumper" was the term for the fan enjoying the whump, not a character!
“I have been, and shall always be, your friend.”
- - - - (Artist: juneinblue on LiveJournal.)
whump in log cabins oh my fucking god
-out in the middle of nowhere, bleak, cut off
-wintertime babey, hypothermia
-howling wind rattling the windows, rain pounding the roof
-log. fucking. fires.
-only one bed, given to whumpee, as caretaker stays up all hours to care for them
-whumpee getting caught in a storm/ cut by an animal trap and not being able to go far/ having nowhere else to go
-using it as a rendezvous point with caretaker, who only finds out that whumpee has been hurt (or is actually at death’s door) when they get there
-delirious whumpee running out into the elements whilst caretaker’s back is turned/ injuring caretaker before they run off
-both caretaker and whumpee being/ getting hurt (maybe caretaker gets themself sick whilst caring for whumpee, neglecting themself and suffering for it)
-olden days, and therefore period-appropriate whump and caretaking methods- e.g. vikings, anglo-saxons, gay Canadian lumberjacks in the 1800s
-a kind forest/ mountain stranger taking in someone who overestimated their hiking ability
-hearing animals outside at night, caretaker comforting/ being comforted by whumpee
-using camping pots and pans, and whatever they’ve brought with them/ found in the cabin as makeshift medical supplies
-finding the previous inhabitants’ bodies, caretaker not telling whumpee because they have to make do and nurse them back to health
-bathing in a tiny tub on the floor with lots of help from caretaker, the water having to be heated over an actual fire/ log burner
-caretaker foraging in the surrounding area, even hunting some animals and fishing
-blankets, but in a very log cabin way, u feel me?
-search parties being sent out for them <3 <3 <3 oh the angst
-having only one room, nowhere for caretaker to go and cry at night, have to just suck it up or let it out right in front of whumpee
-the nearby lake being frozen over or the way back too difficult to trek through until months later
please add more, I’m absolutely in love with this
omg omg omg ok my favourite
-There being no bed at all, just some old blankets stored somewhere so the characters have to cuddle together for warmth in front of the fire
-FREEZING cold in the winter, waking up in the middle of the night shaking so bad they can hardly move (bonus if they’re sick and feverish on top of that)
-It being abandoned and full of spiders but the only means of shelter after whumpee fell in a frozen lake
-Hearing enemies surrounding them outside who don’t realize there’s anyone in there, having to be as quiet as possible while the exterior is being searched
-Limited light sources, having a hard time seeing how bad the whumpee’s wounds are in the dark
-FINDING someone badly injured or sick in an apparently abandoned cabin
-Delirious whumpee being terrified at the sound of the wind howling across the chimney at night
-No water so they have to melt snow from outside over the fire

Reading instructions for government communication in case of a nuclear detonation. It’s fascinating in a morbid sort of way – especially, I think, looking at how carefully the message templates are planned for effect.
Miscellaneous observations:
They’re (sensibly) very careful, when giving “please don’t go out looking for family members” instructions, to emphasize that this is what is safest for your family members. Every single time: “going outside to retrieve your loved ones will expose you and them to dangerous and potentially deadly levels of radiation.” This is very smart. I can definitely see myself, panicked and in shock, going “screw radiation poisoning are my sisters safe?” And, similarly, I can see that added phrase being enough to get me to stop and go “…okay, yes, good point.”
The occasional inclusion of parenting advice is kind of amusing. Try to give kids tasks to do! Remember that children of different ages may need different kinds of explanations! Stay calm and speak in a level voice so as not to panic your children!
Also very smart: including instructions for “how can the public help.” (Text instead of making phone calls so as not to tie up lines; stay out of the way of emergency responders; offer shelter to people who need it.) It would probably have been smart to make up something the public could do to help if they couldn’t come up with anything real, just to keep people calm and out from underfoot, but coming up with fairly practical answers like that was even better.
Some of the messages are weird to see prepared, when there’s of course no particular situation to occasion them. But when you actually stop and reflect, none of them actually seem dishonest.
“At this time, we have no information to indicate that additional attacks are being planned; however, we are taking all possible security precautions to protect the American people.” It would be surprising if, should such a situation arise, we did have information to indicate that additional attacks were being planned; and of course they’d be taking all possible precautions.
“While it is too early to know the specific impacts, we know that this has been a catastrophic event where lives have been lost and homes and businesses destroyed.” Well, yeah. Weird to see that prepared in advance, but it would definitely be true.
There’s a lot of emphasis on the fact that radiation levels will be high for the first few hours/days and decrease rapidly thereafter, which makes sense once I think about it (half-lives and stuff) but wouldn’t have occurred to me. (And it definitely makes sense to emphasize – people would be in radiation lasts for millennia oh no mode, and thinking about it being significantly better within days would probably help a lot with keeping people calm, even if it’s still really bad.)
It’s somehow weird to see all the references to Facebook, Twitter, texting, websites, and so forth. Something in my brain apparently classes those as Not Real Official Things Which Should Definitely Not Be In A Fancy Official Announcement.
The tip that water in hot water tanks and toilet tanks will be free of contamination is actually super clever and would not have occurred to me.
On the other hand, the fact that boiling tap water does not get rid of radioactive contamination definitely would have occurred to me. But still a good thing to specify.
The section on “will my power still work” includes fire safety tips for if you decide to burn things for light or warmth or cooking. Which – wow, can you imagine, what a way to go, “there was a nuclear bomb … and then I accidentally set my house on fire with my grill.”
All the tiny trivial tips are somehow really fascinating to me. Wash your hair when decontaminating – but don’t use conditioner, because it’ll trap particles and stay in your hair! Which makes sense, of course, but it could easily not occur to you at the time. I just love that someone sat down and thought through all of this and thought “you know, people are going to try and use conditioner when they decontaminate, aren’t they.”
Other tips seem totally weird, but given how weird-but-clever many tips are, I bet they are things that would seem sensible-under-stress to someone. Treat cuts and such with first aid – there’s no need to delay treatment because of radiation!
Instructions on what to do if there’s a nuclear incident while you’re on a boat. I can honestly say that is not a question that had ever crossed my mind before. But now I know!
There’s something grimly funny about all of the guidance on what emotional reactions to expect. You may feel sad or irritable or anxious! You may have trouble making decisions! You may have trouble following instructions! You may have inexplicable stomach pain! You may have difficulty breathing! I just can’t stop going oh my god, it’s a guide to mental illness for neurotypicals.
the link in the OP is dead for me, but i think i found the document in question
grim stuff, but good to know. it’s astonishing how much anxiety can be reduced by an authority telling you, ex, “90% of radioactive material can be removed from your person if you take your contaminated clothes off and keep them away from you”. there are still gonna be people that worry about that last 10%, and it’s not irrational to! but just knowing you’ve already “improved your chances” by that much a margin can be the difference between keeping your head in a crisis versus becoming nonfunctional.

Enemy shows a suspicious amount of humanity to Ally, sharing water, bringing rations, and even a thin blanket on cold nights.

Character is found my enemy's loyal hound
Weapon blew up in character's face
Trapped inside downed plane
Enemy and ally awake in 2nd Enemy's custody
Character A and Character B are both allies trapped in the same situation, but from different nations. Neither has even heard of the other's nation, aside from occasional news back home.
Stabbed by weapon lacerated in poison
Character is part of a sinking, but manages to cling onto to a buoyant piece of debris. Only now they're getting tired, and questioning if anyone would ever come for them.
Paranoid character gets scared and shoots an ally
Ally takes shelter from a natural disaster, only to find enemy company in their midst, a gun commanding them to go back in broken language.
For the ask game: stabbings?
Thoughts: again, lots of potential.
Specifically, I like stabbings that look really bad and hurt, but the characters know they have no idea how actually bad the injury is because they can’t do imaging for some reason, and they have to assume worst case scenario.
I think MacGyver (reboot) would be great for this one.

Trope for the ask game:
Character saying “I’m fine” and then immediately collapsing
Thoughts: not bad
Specifically I think this trope is great if you do the lead up for it- show the person as sick or injured, trying to take care of themselves until they can’t anymore, but the only way they can actually ask for help is by collapsing.
The stoic kinda lone-wolf-with-a-new-found-family characters like Ronon from SGA.
Whump trope time! I just watched an episode where the MC was buried alive. What's your take on that? :)
Thoughts- a lot of potential!
Specifically, I really like when a main character is buried and the rest of the characters know about it and are trying to find them, and there’s a scientific character who does the calculations on how long they can survive with the air that they have, and it ends up being like 5 hours and they are all super worried.
I think this works best with a whumpee who has a group of friends who really care about them, especially if they don’t know the extent to which their friends will go to save them.
Ask Game: Send me a whump trope and I’ll tell you
My thoughts on it
Any specifics I like with this trope (extra details)
Any specific whumpees/caretakers/whumpers I like with it
we arrive at the end of January. Have a rest
