I’ve been thinking about how River Song is the epitome of this Latin phrase I’ve recently come across, ‘per aspera, ad astra’ translated as ‘through the hardships/thorns to the stars’.
Her life is full of hardships: she is kidnapped by Kovarian before she is even born; her parents don’t know that they are her parents; when they finally realise who she is, they leave her alone in a hospital (albeit, reluctantly); she finally finishes her degree but gets kidnapped again by Kovarian to kill the love of her life and so on.
But through all of this, she still finds the stars - her personal stars and her happiness. She is passionately and deeply in love with the Doctor, she stays in touch with her parents (while she can) and is always so strong for her husband when he can’t be. It’s beautiful.
