It’s a ritual.

His mother had been fond of them, he remembers in brief flashes, just like he remembers her unruly dark hair and her rough voice when she told him stories. He stops to think about that for a moment, tries to bring her back to him as a whole instead of in bits and pieces. But Misha finds that time works strangely, and he doesn’t remember as much about his mother as used to. Just her hair and her stories and the funny rituals he never understood about her.

It’s the soft yowl at his ear that brings him back from piecing the past together. An orange tabby is resting on his shoulder, ears flattened and tail twitching as if to say ‘hurry on with it’.

He wonders, maybe, if that is what Harshaw heard in her, too. Read the twitches of her nose and the flex of her claws and called that language.

“Oncat wanders the country, moving from city to city, until he finds one with a port. Since he is a sheer prodigy at catching rodents, the sailors welcome him aboard and let him travel with them for as long as he likes. They even feed him scraps when there are no more mice to catch. Then, the ship lands in a bustling port city. Oncat is intrigued and leaves the ship to explore the city, when he suddenly sees a boy with red hair! Not as red as Harshaw’s. just a liiiiiiiittle bit, but he recognizes the color and decides to follow that boy, because up to date, every red-haired boy had been nothing but the kindest soul on the planet. After a while, the boy starts noticing the cat and starts to carefully befriend it by feeding it crumbs from his pocket. They start trusting each other and eventually become friends. Soon, Oncat moves in with the boy, his mother who is very kind and his boyfriend who runs almost as fast as Oncat. He refuses to be a pet, but he likes these fellows.
