Movements - Third Degree
I said that Finding Ezra could’ve functioned as its own standalone adventure movie, a sweet spot of a premise that would’ve avoided the MCU-ification that they’re supposedly so concerned about while still meaningfully continuing the stories of established characters.
But now I’m laughing because what they did instead was create a tv show that not only requires at least some viewing of the animated shows (not the part of the show that actually mattered, though - the Epilogue, the connecting piece - because they retconned that story), but it also invents an unwritten, unknown, never-before-seen backstory for Ahsoka and Sabine that gives the Ahsoka show the feeling of MCU-ification without having any actual resource material to consult if fans did want to know what happened between these two characters in the past, thereby ensuring a future MCU-ification for the Ahsoka show that hasn’t happened yet.
Great work all around. Lol.

“The LEGO Movie was my favorite movie of 2014, but it strikes me that the main character was male, because I feel like in our current culture, he HAD to be. The whole point of Emmett is that he’s the most boring average person in the world. It’s impossible to imagine a female character playing that role, because according to our pop culture, if she’s female she’s already SOMEthing, because she’s not male. The baseline is male. The average person is male. You can see this all over but it’s weirdly prevalent in children’s entertainment. Why are almost all of the muppets dudes, except for Miss Piggy, who’s a parody of femininity? Why do all of the Despicable Me minions, genderless blobs, have boy names? I love the story (which I read on Wikipedia) that when the director of The Brave Little Toaster cast a woman to play the toaster, one of the guys on the crew was so mad he stormed out of the room. Because he thought the toaster was a man. A TOASTER. The character is a toaster. I try to think about that when writing new characters— is there anything inherently gendered about what this character is doing? Or is it a toaster?”
— Bojack Horseman creator Raphael Bob-Waksberg commenting on how weird gendered defaults in entertainment are, and why we should think twice about them. Excerpted from this longer original post. (via 360degreesasthecrowflies)
I remember when I went to see Hotel Transylvania for the first time and, though I did find it to be an enjoyable film, the characterization of Johnny, gave me thoughts. First off, he is the first guy who is not a family member, hotel guest or family friend, Mavis has ever met. Mavis has only just come of age and has never really left the hotel-due to her father’s control/rules/manipulation. So of course Johnny, a guy as average as you can possibly be, is going to look like a superstar to Mavis. This dynamic is common and I know full well it is intended to appeal to the boys and men of the audience. Like this message of ‘see guys, if your girl is naive enough, even you, who has no hobbies or worldly experience, can be amazing.” I know the intended message is that anyone has the potential to be a hero. But when male characters are viewed as the default while women/girls and BIPOC people are seen as different, or other, is that not already saying that the male hero is the special one? I know that’s a bit off topic. But this is what comes to mind when I come across the male as default in story telling discourse.
