b is for “what up i’m a brooklyn bitch.”
GET TO KNOW ME: Favorite Male Characters (1/5) ↳ STEVE ROGERS
I’ve been on my own since I was 18. I never really fit in anywhere, even in the army. My faith’s in people, I guess. Individuals. And I’m happy to say that, for the most part, they haven’t let me down. Which is why I can’t let them down either.
A quiet laugh escapes him at the mention of pizza. "Pizza, huh?" John reaches for the tablet beside the exam table, tapping a few notes into the chart before looking back up. "I've been trying coffee, bargaining, guilt... apparently I've been using the wrong currency."
The smile lingers as he slips the tablet onto the counter. "And yeah. New-ish." He reaches for his stethoscope before pulling a pair of gloves from the box on the wall. "Still learning where everything is. Although I've already figured out that every organization has one person who treats the medical staff like they're collecting parking tickets." His eyebrows lift knowingly. "Around here, that's Barton."
Stepping closer, his expression settles into one of quiet concentration. "I'm glad to hear you're actually planning on taking the week." There's no hint of skepticism in his voice, only approval. "Now let's make sure your body's on board with that plan." His gaze drifts over the bruising along Steve's left side before returning to his face. "I'm going to take a listen to your lungs first, then we'll see what your ribs have to say for themselves. Deep breath for me—well..." The corner of his mouth twitches sympathetically as Steve winces. "Maybe not too deep. I'd rather not make an enemy out of Captain America on my first week."
Steve chuckles despite the ache that flares, the way his lungs protest -- still not worse than the time he’d caught pneumonia as a kid. “Bit surprised coffee didn’t do the trick, but then again it could be where the offer is coming from. Definitely try pizza, and if all else fails, well… could always attempt the secret admirer route. See how far that gets you.” Steve says, a smirk still playing on his lips as he watches doctor Carter.
New-ish… Steve knows that feeling, the slightly out of place awkwardness, trying to settle in without disrupting the flow of things. His smile turns a little sheepish when Carter claims Barton’s the one who’s bad about avoiding the med wing. “He’s pretty stubborn -- at least I can lean on the excuse of healing too quickly to want to bother anyone.” He says, rubbing the back of his neck.
He sits a little straighter when Carter steps closer, his ribs protesting the adjustment, the ache making him want to hunch back over. Nodding once, it slips into a soft laugh when he suggests maybe not taking too deep a breath. “Please, doc -- you doin’ your job is the last thing on the list of things that would make me your enemy. Besides, s’not like you’re committing atrocities or some horrible experiments. But… still gonna take you up on that not too deep of a breath.” He says, and waits until Carter is ready before he inhales as deeply as he can without it hurting too much -- in, then out, repeating a couple of times before Steve allows himself to slouch a little.

Violence is no stranger to Peggy. Wartime had bled it into her blood even before her own service and after, it was all but a close friend. Still, that didn't mean she relished in it or it didn't affect her. She was quiet as she walked through the front door, battered, bruised, but alive, and that was what counted. She saw the look on Steve's face and looked down. Her blouse was likely ruined. "Oh, it's- it's not mine," she assured him. Peggy was quiet, and oh so grateful, as Steve guided her to the bath and ran the water, both in the tub and in the sink. Before she knew what was happening, he had her hands under the sink tap, carefully washing the blood from her hands, under her nails, as she did nothing but lean heavily against him and fought against the bone-deep weariness that filled her.
It’s not the first time he’s seen her like this -- exhausted, bruised, definitely looking worse for wear. But just because he’s seen her like this before doesn’t mean he enjoys it or is used to it by any means, doesn’t stop him from shifting immediately into caretaker mode. Concern immediately surfaces the second he sees the blood on her blouse, his hand coming up to cup her cheek, thumb brushing softly against her skin.
“Alright… c’mon, sweetheart, let’s get you cleaned up and changed. I got you.” He mutters gently, dropping his hand from her cheek and slipping his arm around her middle to guide her down the hall and into the bathroom.
He starts the water quietly, letting the concern simmer, the questions bouncing around in his head though he refuses to pry for details when she’s like this. At least it’s not her blood, he thinks quietly as he turns on the sink and bathtub faucets, then stands beside her to help wash the blood from her hands first. “I won’t ask too many questions,” Steve murmurs when he feels her lean against him, very gently working the blood from her hands with the soap by the sink, careful to get under her nails as well. “But if you wanna talk about it, Peg, I’m all ears. An’ I’m not gonna leave you alone like this.” Turning his head, he presses a soft kiss to her temple before shutting off the sink.
“Blouse first, lemme check the water, make sure it’s not too hot or cold.” He states, smiling softly as he tucks her hair back behind her ear, then shuffles to check the bath for her.

Steve pauses in his steps, glancing up at what little of the sky he can see through the canopy. They probably were pushing their luck with this hike, but Logan knows the area and Steve -- well, he’s not going to let anything happen to either of them. He takes a deep breath since he can’t quite see the clouds, usually it’s easy to smell rain in the air, the moisture levels shifting how things felt, smelled. “It might… I wouldn’t be surprised. Maybe we should head back? Avoid getting thoroughly soaked, unless you want to press on?” He asks -- for as much as he hates the idea of having to cut this hike with Logan short, he knows it’s wiser to err on the side of caution. Especially with how unpredictable storms and lightning can be.
Thunder rumbles in the distance, hinting that the rain was much closer than Steve had thought.
Apparently, Amity had severely underestimated her self-control.
Sitting this close to Steve, next to his annoyingly gorgeous... well... everything. Not to mention the beard? Ugh. Yep. Throwing all of that in along with all of her pent-up feelings towards him? And yeah, she was panicking.
Because the only thing that was currently occupying her thoughts was how badly she wanted to feel beard burn against the sensitive skin of her inner thighs, how badly she wanted her fingers entangling into his hair as she desperately arched up into the heat of his mouth and... JESUS CHRIST.
The second her hair was up and out of her face, the petite blonde slipped her phone swiftly but discreetly out of her pocket, and sent a flurry of frantic texts off to her best friend:
✉ [ TEXT: Liza ] ⟶ HELP ✉ [ TEXT: Liza ] ⟶ H E L P ✉ [ TEXT: Liza ] ⟶ Good god please please pleeeease? Help me think of something else? like i stg LITERALLY ANYTHING ELSE because I am fucking fighting for my LIIIIFE over here ✉ [ TEXT: Liza ] ⟶ like I'm trying SO hard to be well-behaved and respectful while I'm sitting next to him on this goddamn couch ✉ [ TEXT: Liza ] ⟶ but literally ALL i can think of is how badly I would like beard burn on my inner thighs rn?! ✉ [ TEXT: Liza ] ⟶ i am SUFFERING
Suddenly, she was regretting putting her hair up, because fuck, she knows her cheeks are flushing, can feel the burn of them, and if her hair was down it would be so much easier to hide it.
But it wasn't until she fired off that final text that she fully clued into the admission he had just made. Can't say no, huh? Oh, yeah, she was definitely filing that information away for later.
❝Oh my god, okay,❞ a snort of laughter escaped her, ❝A girl puts her cold feet on you one time, and she never gets to live it down?!❞ The conversation was a welcome distraction from the absolute gutter that was her thoughts currently though, so she latched onto it. ❝I dunno, your hoodie almost reaches my knees, I don't think your socks would even stay on my feet if I wanted them to.❞ But any other words promptly caught in her throat as one of Steve's strong arms wrapped about her and easily tugged her in against his side.
For a second, she stayed incredibly still. Well this sure as hell felt romantic, didn't it? And how in the hell was she expected to help him pick a movie when all she could concentrate on was how his warmth felt against her, how his arm felt so perfect wrapped around her like this?!
Tilting her head back, she stared up at him for a moment, taking in all of those handsome details now that she was even closer to him. Had his eyelashes always been this long...?
Curling in towards his torso, she cleared her throat, her heart absolutely racing there within her chest as she offered her own admission, ❝I'm gonna be real honest here Steve... A movie is the last thing on my mind right this second.❞
“You’re never gonna live down the ice cube toes, sweetheart.” The endearment slips out before he can stop it, ears immediately going red despite the boyish smirk tugging at his lips. Even though Amity tries arguing the fact that his socks will be too big, he doesn’t care. That possessive part of him wants to see her in his clothes all the time now. “I think you’d be fine.” He mutters as he gently pulls her close.
For a second, he worries that he’s done something with the way that she freezes -- had he read this wrong the whole time? Had he mistaken every text, every conversation, every interaction from before?
But then Amity turns her head, she looks up at him with those devastatingly bright blues and he feels the anxiety melt away. Something in the way she looks at him, the way her gaze takes him in before she curls closer against him. Warmth blooms in his chest and his arm around her tightens, all but pulling her into his lap as he lets out a soft chuckle at her admission.
“Think we’re in the same boat here, Amity.” Steve mutters softly, his other hand coming up to cup her cheek, his thumb brushing against her skin as his gaze drops momentarily to her lips -- plush and perfect, God he could stare at her all day. But instead, he cups her cheek and glances back up to catch her gaze again as his thumb brushes against her skin. Leaning close, he smiles the smallest bit before dragging her into a kiss, keeping his desperation tamed as best as he could, though he can’t help himself from nipping at her lower lip, then soothing his tongue against it slowly.
Okay, so every time I see this gif set, I always want to make a joke along the lines of, “Same”. Because usually, whenever we see this gifset, or watch this moment in the film, we’re so busy focusing on the Apple employee, and how in this moment, he basically represents any of us who fangirl over Steve Rogers or Chris Evans ever. It’s a funny moment, yes, but for the first time I was actually struck by the look on Steve’s face in the last gif.
Yes, he and Natasha are incognito; it’s essentially life or death that rests on them not being caught in this moment. But Aaron already established moments before that he doesn’t recognize Steve; he merely noted that they apparently have the same glasses. The concern is still there that Steve could be recognized, but that’s no longer presented as an imminent threat or concern.
Steve’s expression in the last gif isn’t one of relief, it’s one of irritability. It’s discomfort. Because at this point, Aaron’s basically fawning over him (and this is usually where we all laugh and go, “Yeah, who can blame him?”) - but more importantly, he’s fawning over his appearance.
Look at his word choice: “Specimen”. That’s literally what Steve Rogers was, to get the appearance that Aaron - and so many others around Steve - are in awe of. The definition of specimen is: “An individual animal, plant, piece of a mineral, etc., used as an example of its species or type for scientific study or display.”
How many times do you think Steve felt like nothing more than a science experiment? Clearly quite a bit, if the comments he makes in Age of Ultron are any indication:
I miss the days when the weirdest thing science created was me.
Right, what kind of monster would let a German Scientist experiment on them to protect their country?
I know the second quote’s relevance lies with Steve understanding Wanda’s and Pietro’s motivations, but the point is, this is still something Steve thinks about frequently. And it’s interesting, his wording in the first quote; since he got the serum, he’s always considered himself the weirdest thing science ever created.
You could even argue that maybe there’s a sense of of self-deprecation in his expression in that last gif. Aaron doesn’t even realize it, but he just voiced Steve’s own perception of self right back to him. He means it as a compliment; Steve only hears it as fact. He was a specimen - and even with everything that’s happened, and all the good he’s helped do, and how hard he keeps trying to continue to do good, there seems to be a part of him that still seems himself as one.
Add to that the obvious questions: How many times do people look at Steve - the way he is now - and Steve knows they would’ve never looked at him twice when he was smaller? How many times do people look at Steve - the way he is now - and Steve just doesn’t believe them?
With the exception of Bucky, Peggy, and Erskine, no one really bothered to see Steve before he got the serum. No one appreciated him, or thought he was worth the second glance. The moment he became a science experiment, he walked out the “perfect specimen” and suddenly people who never cared before suddenly couldn’t stop staring. Even now, you can see the level of discomfort Steve feels whenever people look at him a certain way; see the exterior, but still don’t seem the see the real guy underneath.
Because who he is underneath is still that skinny little punk from Brooklyn. No matter how big Steve became, that little guy never went away. And I’m sure he misses who he used to be sometimes; maybe not the sickness and the impairments he had, but who he really was.
Until he got the serum, Steve only ever wanted the chance to prove himself, make a difference, help people; be visible. Now, I can’t help but wonder - when things like this happen - how often Steve finds himself wishing he could be invisible again.
#steve will always be that skinny little guy#no matter how much muscle and how much brute strength he has#he will always have who he really was#and it's so hard for people to really //see// that#no one he knows now knew him as that guy#all everyone ever sees is cap#and i think maybe he wonders if that's all people will ever see#if that's all he really is anymore )

If she were feeling any better, Peggy would insist he stay away. The argument of keeping him from getting ill of course falls apart in seconds, but letting him see her at her least put together would feel untenable if she felt even a slight modicum better.
Instead, even worse, she feels the press of tears at the back of her already glassy eyes when he steps closer, even when a cough rumbles low in her chest, and she doesn't pull back. In fact, she steps closer, leaning heavily against him, wrapping her arms around his waist and burying her face in his chest. "You should go home," she murmurs, just as she tightens her grip on his waist. "I'll be fine."
Steve just chuckles when he hears her protest, when she tells him he should go home -- her words were saying one thing, but the way she leans against him, the way her hold around his waist tightens when she says I’ll be fine? That tells him something else, speaks volumes. “Peg.” He says simply, his tone soft, lips pressing a kiss to the crown of her head.
“‘m not goin’ anywhere, sweetheart.” He says, pulling away just enough to look at her, one hand coming to brush her hair back behind her ear before cupping her cheek. She was warm, definitely running a fever, and he didn’t particularly like the way her cough sounded -- rough, stuck in her chest, sounding like he used to when he’d been smaller, sicker. “Fortunately or not, you’re stuck with me now. C’mon -- let’s get you to the couch, and I’ll fix some soup or somethin’. Well, so long as you’ve got somethin’ in your pantry that I can use.” Steve doesn’t give her room to argue, instead he very gently, very slowly, scoops her into his arms and carries her back to the living room to set her on the sofa, grabbing the throw once she’s seated and pulling it over her legs.
“Have you checked your temperature yet? You’re runnin’ a little hot, Peg.”

He’s found a quiet spot in the park -- never the easiest feat considering how nice the weather has been, but he’s lucky to have found a tree to lean against. Steve enjoys the quiet when he can get it now; there once had been a time where he would have felt restless or useless, but now? After everything that’s happened -- with Thanos, and trying to set everything back to rights, after putting the stones where (when?) they belong -- he’s glad to feel like he can breathe now.
There’s a curious breeze, then a shadow appears across his sketchbook just as a small smirk pulls at his lips. Looking up, he squints slightly against the sun before he’s able to properly see Ally.
“Well, well… long time no see,” Steve smiles a little wider and has the distinct urge to call her kid like he’s done in the past, but he refrains -- for now. “What brings you to my neck of the woods? Up to no good?” He asks, tucking his pencil into his sketchbook before patting the empty spot of grass next to him.

Come on. Get your coat. We gotta go.
You want to do your speech for me?
You can't just turn them off.
I'm not really feeling it.
You got something on your face there.
I like how you name the people.
What do you call me behind my back, I wonder.
l'm cool with that. I surely am.
Maybe we can disappear one day altogether.
You know what l just heard?
All I'm saying is, it could be you.
You know what l'm saying?
Why not? Anything is possible.
You son of a bitch!
l had no idea anyone was here.
Oh, good Lord. Here, let me.
Oh, God. Your hand's bleeding.
You don't need to see it. No.
What, "playboy"? That's a compliment.
Llisten, you know, you're a public figure. lt's news. So what?
Whose side are you on?
Sometimes you have to listen to me. Every now and again it might be nice.
If there's anything you need, please call me.
Can you look at me for a minute?
Where are you going?
Oh, my God. I'm sorry. I'm so clumsy.
One day, we're looking at rings, and the next day, we're breaking up.
Listen, my darling, I'm going to be late. I'll call you later, okay?
Could you just hold up those two outfits?
Could l ask you an enormous favor?
l know this isn't your job, and l'd never normally ask, but I'm so….
Please. You look like you're someone who knows the difference between taupe and caramel.
You think it's gonna rain?
I just got sent on an errand. I'm already late.
I'm gonna go in your closet. I'm gonna put it on for you.
Can l just ask you one question?
What do you say, am l right or am l right?
l got you. Don't forget the bags.
l'm not gonna have time to change.
Please tell me you're kidding.
Don't do this to me.
What am I supposed to tell [him/her/them] this time?
Tell somebody who believes you.
Can you not say a word somewhere else?
You know, it happens sometimes.
I never want to do that again, okay?
You're going to do better next time.
Come on, you know you wanna open it.
Are you going to keep me company today?
You know, I am really sorry about all this.
What's with the face?
Why are you stealing my tissues?
You know, come on. You only live once.
My God, is your mind always on the pepperoni?
All right, here's the difference between me and the goddess.
No, no, come on, get out of there.
You're gonna get us in trouble!
You're supposed to be helping me out in here.
What are you doing? What are you doing?!
When will you or l ever get to try on a $5000 anything?
What's the cook making for lunch?
Do I look as stupid as you think l am?
I know this offends your sense of fairness, but I'd like to win.
Relax. You're starting to lose your hair.
What are you listening to?
I know who you are.
Who told you to ask these questions?
What's the difference these days?
What are you doing up here? What are you talking about?
Let's not forget. I'm a kid and l need fresh air?
Weren't you saying how you wanted to stretch your legs?
Come with me, if you're free.
Let's go. You're gonna have to hold it. Come on!
I want you there at 1 :00, okay? All right? Okay?
You don't know what you can do until you have to.
There's not a lot of choice. You get used to it.
I always get nervous before l go on.
Do you want to sit down?
So how long are you in town for?
Sometimes I feel like I live there.
Oh, my God! Did I get anything on it? Is it okay?
Don't believe everything you read.
I want to show you something. Follow me.
l got it. lt's fine. l'm good. Don't worry about me.
Look at that. It's like two different worlds.
l'd like to point out it's paparazzi-free.
Sometimes when I have to stand up in front of people, my heart kind of races, and l can't remember my words.
I had to find something to draw the nervous energy away from my heart.
It's not quite as boring as it sounds. I don't know, are you interested?
Wait a minute. lsn't that the guy who hired [name] to get pictures of you?
I don't get it. Why would you go?
Won't everyone know you're there just to expose yourself?
l didn't. You put it that way.
You shouldn't serve yourself up, no matter what the cause.
Why don't you tell me what you really think.
You really want me to tell you what l think?
Monday... l'm busy. Sorry.
We gotta go. We're gonna be late.
"It's complicated." What kind of answer is that?
Look, what am I supposed to do? Make the bed with me in it?
Look who's here. Let's review the last hour, okay?
Can you handle that for me?
Don't write it down. Just remember it.
I assume you know the reason you've been called here.
Where are you? I know you're in here.
You know what? You had no right!
Do you know what you've done?
If you wanna do me a favor then mind your own business once in a while.
What we did today was wrong. But you didn't really lie. Not technically.
Letting someone believe something's true when it's not is just as much a lie as a lie is.
I hate to break it to you, but I don't think [name] is after your money.
What do you mean, "so"? What if somebody from the hotel sees it?
I hate to break the bubble. You can't tell it's you.
You do one spontaneous thing, you think you're going to hell.
Do you understand this could be bad?
Do you know what this is gonna cost me?
I thought we had a moment.
You look good in anything.
Who does [she/he/they] think [she/he/they] is to talk to me like that?
How sweet of you to remember.
l hope you didn't think I needed reminding.
You're staying in the Park Suite, right?
Another interesting day now, huh?
All right, what's up, mystery man?
You're in trouble. What are you laughing at?
Well, l mean what is it? Is it on the lnternet l'm an ex-couple?
I am terrified to ask what that was about.
You want to hear something strange? I invited you to lunch, and you came, only it wasn't you.
Maybe you should spend real time in the projects and then you wouldn't have to make up speeches and memorize them.
lt's not like you're breaking some law.
Yo u don't get it. None of you. There was something different about [him/her/them].
Don't say, "love."
You are not in love with [name]. [He/she/they] is not in love with you.
You have no connections, affiliations or loyalties. You're from two different worlds. Do you hear me?
I don't have anything to wear to this thing.
What do you need? Tell me what you need.
Just go and get it over with.
What am I doing here, [name]. This is all a lie.
It's more like a dream, you know? For one night, you're living it for all of us.
Don't think about tomorrow. Just think about tonight.
And this, this is who you really are.
I only came to tell you that this, you and me, can't go anywhere beyond this evening.
Want to dance?
You have to listen. I know you're used to getting your way.
What a night. I mean, who isn't here?
Do I need to know something that I don't know already?
I like a good mystery, you know.
You better do what you're supposed to because [name] thinks I distract you.
Nothing, just until this minute, I didn't know what that was.
Do you have somewhere else to be?
What l can't figure out is, are you running towards something you want? Or are you running away from something you're afraid to want?
Look, l've made so many mistakes already. l just don't want to make it worse.
There's something you don't know, okay?
You were mesmerizing.
If tonight is all we have, stay. Please.
Do you think that's too obvious?
I thought it would be impolite to correct you.
What the hell's happening here? Why are you dressed that way?
Jesus Christ! The press is gonna have a field day with this one.
I can assure you it has never happened here before either.
You are slipping. You should've noticed something. I am disappointed.
I can't help but feel that this is partly my fault.
After all, we've only got each other to get through this humiliation.
Actually, I made a decision a moment ago. It was long overdue.
I don't get it. What just happened?
What was all this, some kind of bet? A little game of what, get-the-guests?
Who's kidding who here? Think you would've looked at me if you knew l was the maid?
You didn't give me a chance.
Was I supposed to introduce myself while taking a leak?
All right, you want the truth?
There was a part of me that wanted to see what it felt like to have someone like you look at me the way you did, just once.
If l could rewind the past week, I would.
Was any of it real?
It was so real it made me wonder how l was ever gonna give you up.
l had to give you up. That was the plan. And then, last night.. l couldn't.
What are we gonna do for dinner? You hungry?
Will you look at me?
What were you thinking, going out with someone like that?
It must really burn you that I think I have the right to go out with [him/her/them].
lt's all my fault. You know what? It's all right. l'll be fine.
I love you, okay? I do.
There's nowhere to go from there.
Keep dreaming dreams that will never happen.
I'm going to take that chance without any fear.
I know, but it's like fate.
I know everyone makes mistakes. And it's a sign of character to give a person a second chance, right?
Even if someone lied, they should be forgiven.
l'm just trusting my instincts here.
Look…. Can we start over? Second chance, second date?
No but this scene is extremely important and it’s why I’m angry at people who say that Steve’s characterization sucked.
Steve is the only one who understands where these two kids come from. Hill is trying to distant Steve from them because right after he says this line she says: ‘’We’re not at war anymore.’’. She’s trying to prove that Steve did the right thing because when the country is at war we all make some hard choices that we are not proud of. In war everything is permitted, and Steve did the right thing because he was doing it for the right cause. Hill is basically saying ‘You did it to protect your country and to save people and to make a difference, but these kids have no excuse for volunteering to these scientists.’
But how does Steve reply to that? To her ‘’We’re not at war anymore’’?
He says ‘’They are.’’
And it is SO important because Steve sees the big picture. For most Americans the war is something ugly that their grandparents had to deal with, something in the distant past that left mark but is also way behind them. But just because there wasn’t a war in America for over 70 years doesn’t mean that other countries have been so lucky. And Steve GET’S IT. It doesn’t mean that he’s not mad. It doesn’t mean that he will not fight them if they’re on the opposing sides. But he knows where they come from. And he won’t let them be reduced to some monsters who let German scientists experiment on them.
Because if Steve was anything but American during WW2, if he wasn’t on the ‘winning team’, he wouldn’t be labeled as hero.
And Steve immediately fought alongside Pietro and Wanda when he saw they were opposing Ultron. No questions asked, no expression of doubt. He was the first Avenger to give them a chance and didn’t even ask what made them change their minds; he just accepted it.
@vallorouslly sent | steve catches his reflection smiling after receiving a text from logan [ meme ]
It’s the simplest of texts - an invitation from Logan to go out for drinks with him and some friends. But why does it send his heart skipping against his chest? The prospect of spending time with Logan makes him feel… light. Excited. No frills, zero expectations -- his screen goes black and he catches the smile on his face.
The way it makes it all the way to his eyes.
Steve immediately texts back without hesitation --
