"people hated rodimus because he was new" "people just hated hot rod because he was silly" "they hated hot rod for his fishing swag" people had an immense hatred for rodimus because he was gay in the 80s. he was pink and flamboyant and nothing like the ideal heterosexual masculinity of optimus prime and just because nobody said out loud that rodimus prime was gay does not mean that nobodys brain noticed that pattern especially growing up during the 80s with all the homophobia of the era. nobody hated springer or ultra magnus the same way. they hated rodimus for being gay. it isnt that complicated.
I think this is a perceptive read on the intense hatred of the character that persisted for so long. I remember finding a fan's beat-by-beat report of BotCon 2002 via a link of TFWiki, and it featured this moment:

Participating in the panel were Neil Kaplan, Mike McConnohie, Peter Spellos, Wankus, and Dick Gautier. The first question at the VA panel was directed to McConnohie. The fan got as far as "I have a question about Tracks..." when McConnohie interrupted him to say with a smile, "No, he's not gay." Gautier then jumped in to say, "But Rodimus Prime is!"
I don't think this joke was mean-spirited or anything, and I think Gautier really enjoyed voicing the character—rather I bring this up because the fact that this happened and the fandom was all in on the joke speaks to the fact this was an undercurrent for how fans judged the character so harshly.
i am familiar with this moment, and with the other times gautier did something similar albeit on a lesser scale and still years after the show which imply it may not have been a joke, and it is part of my read of rodimus prime as a gay man.
but i didnt mention it because it is so far removed from the show by many years. while its....nice to have that as evidence it isnt really relevant to the description i was trying to make of comparing rod directly to optimus in terms of the presentation of their masculinity and why a young audience surrounded by media during the reagan years that talked abt homosexuality the ways it did may have picked up on the subtext, then perpetuated that same homophobia for decades afterwards.
Sorry, I didn't mean to derail your post! You're right, all of Hot Rod's/Rodimus's differences in presentation, behavior, and framing compared to Optimus is in the text already, so the external stuff from decades later isn't needed at all.
And I had no idea Gautier may not have been joking! I also didn't know this was ever brought up more than this one time, that's really interesting. Maybe the fact I've only ever seen older fans say it was "clearly a joke" or however they put it is just more proof of homophobia? Not sure.
yr totally fine i think the stuff with gautier is really interesting, i have been trying to compile any firsthand sources of him talking about rodimus being gay for a while now and its mostly secondhand hearsay but i still think it counts for something. most of my focus was just on what would be most useful to a modern fan since its difficult to track all that down and the stuff in the show is There and so poignant...
i do think in comparison to how people would ask about tracks sexuality, that fans treat any instance of saying out loud rodimus is gay as a "joke" is...fascinating ? its okay for tracks, who will constantly be asked about and talked about as though he is gay and defended on those grounds (even though he does get his share of homophobia) and simultaneously rodimus is hated for being gay but it is impossible for him to actually be gay because then fans would be hating a gay man for no reason. lol

i keep seeing misinformation about this, so: queerplatonic relationships do not have a set definition. the name comes from the idea that it's "queering" the platonic relationship, tailoring it to the individual relationships' own desires. it isn't necessarily romance lite, but it also isn't necessarily whatever definition you want to impose on it. the point of queering the platonic relationship is to break away from strict allonormative views on friendship, romance, and sex, not to make a new categorical box to fit in.
the answer to "what is a qpr?" is "whatever you want it to be." sometimes that is romance lite. sometimes it's a deeply committed friendship. sometimes it's friends who have a sexual relationship. sometimes it's based on an entirely different mode of attraction. sometimes it's fluid and impossible to put into words. it's whatever you want it to be. it's queer.
