Ok I laughed my ass off at the Hull/Gatineau jokes, so I’m gonna explain it for anyone not living in the National Capital Region:

Hull is the part of Gatineau right across the Ottawa River - and provincial border, from downtown Ottawa, Ontario. Ontario’s drinking age is 19, Quebec’s is 18. So naturally all the 18yr olds from Ottawa go over to the Quebec side to get drunk.

Hey, remember that time our Prime Minister choked a guy at a public event, it wound up having no negative impact on his political career (he was PM for like 6 more years) and pretty much just made people like him more? Yeah, that’s the Shawinigan handshake. I wonder how many people on here remember/have heard of that.

A protester at a Flag Day event in 1996 got right into Former Prime Minister Jean Chretian’s face in a crowd. His security detail was kind of separated from him by the crowd, so Jean Chretian wound up choking the protester. He said he felt threatened by the protester and it was an act of self-defence.

The one who was choked didn’t press charges (and was totally okay), another person did press charges against the PM, but they were dismissed.
