I like to think that the reason Charlotte Brontë brung out Polly and like expanded on her first in Villette was to show how easily Lucy Snowe blends into the background for the average individual in that world. It’s a bit strange and a stretch but it seems totally probable! I only mean the specific way that Polly was introduced. We learn nothing about Lucy until like chapter 4 or something! So I like to think that it’s some way to really emphasize Lucy’s ultra loneliness because of how easy it is to just push her aside without realizing it. Does that make sense? I’m really tired

Ok hot take but I don’t actually believe these 2000s films about women being submissive to men are in any way feminist or sexually librating. I’m not trying to say that being submissive is inherently oppressing, nor am I going to kink shame. This is strictly about the movie industry and patriarchy. If you see this as kink shaming, uh don’t idk. I genuinely cannot watch these films and think “wow this woman is being fucked by this big man because she’s in power” I’m sorry but she’s not. It was also the 2000s. They’re never going to put a spotlight on women that way. There’s probably exception but I just don’t think that’s the case.

Bro reading The Monk by Matthew Lewis rn and it’s so good but also very interesting to see how sexual fantasies were back then.
