Black-headed Collared Snake (Sibynophis melanocephalus), family Colubridae, Singapore

AKA Malayan Many-toothed or Malayan Hinge-toothed Snake.

Snakes in this genus have hinged teeth that help them feed on lizards with hard plate like scales, like skinks.

They are capable of detaching the end of the tail, like a lizard.

This gorgeous nocturnal aquatic snake feeds on aquatic salamanders, like sirens and amphiumas, which it pins down with its sharp pointed tail.

This unassuming large black snake feeds almost exclusively on other snakes, including a wide variety of venomous snakes.

They are known to be resistant (if not immune) to the venoms of most or all of the venomous snakes they encounter across Central and South America.

This snake is able to eat poison dart frogs, like Phyllobates terribilis (probably the most toxic land animal on Earth), as they are immune to the frogs’ toxins.

Mildly to moderately venomous.

Venom is excreted into the saliva, and enters the prey through the bite wound. Keelbacks do not have fangs.

This species is also poisonous! They sequester toxins from the toads they prey on.

Venomous.

The tip of the tail mimics the appearance of a spider or camel spider, and is used as a lure to attract prey, birds and lizards. (Some observations suggest that it may be mimicking centipedes.)

First known wild ‘grue jay’ hybrid spotted in Texas

Green and blue jays are crossing paths as temperatures rise.

If you happen to find yourself in south Texas and spot a strikingly colored bird, be sure to snap a photo.

According to biologists at the University of Texas at Austin, it may be a mix between a green jay (Cyanocorax yncas) and a blue jay (Cyanocitta cristata).

Unofficially dubbed a “grue jay,” the bird likely marks one of the first confirmed examples of a vertebrate animal that hybridized partially due to climate change.

This tale of two jays began around 7 million years ago, when both species split off from their ancestors on their own evolutionary paths.

Green jays are tropical birds native to Central America whose range previously extended about as far as the United States-Mexico border.

By comparison, their blue jay cousins are known to generally prefer the more temperate environments of the eastern US, and rarely fly further west than Houston, Texas...
