also, warnings are there for a reason. if you read the warnings and still choose to engage in that story, knowing that there are triggering topics for you, it’s not the author’s fault. Simple as that. Their responsibility is to put proper tags on their works, and it’s on the reader if they wish to proceed or not. No one is holding you at gunpoint and making you read anything.

these prequels highlight that people have been fighting from the get-go: lucy gray's defiance, reaper ripping down panem's flags to cover the fallen tributes, haymitch's games and how many others shared his ideologies - the capitol just drowns them out, they rewrite their stories so their efforts are forgotten

There’s multiple parts that bother me. I genuinely think she’s capable of writing a more complex story—if she widened her worldview. And I mean that in all senses. Sarah J Maas needs to interact more as a person and a writer with people who are completely different from her and those around her. A lot of her characters are end up being basically the same “person” with different names and slightly different motives. This paired with the narcissistic tendencies of these characters—and the real problem is that all the supporting characters enable the narcissistic behavior of these leads.

There’s one point where the main character loses control, kills thousands of her own new allies people, then when confronted by said ally she basically throws herself a pity party and says “here’s my money give it to the victims families.” And then it’s done. She leaves the conversation. She doesn’t even try to help or interact with those she knows she hurt.

Her partner pretty much tells the ally, “well magic is unpredictable,” and the ally accepts it?? It’s not brought up again and the ally remains a valuable person to the war for the remainder of the series??

Cherry on top, not even a full day after she inadvertently kills these men and women, her and her partner have sex on the beach for the first time. Overlooking the port. Where the people died. Whose deaths she caused. On the sand that was their home.

Yes this is the bare bones of the situation. But the focus was her losing control of herself and her self pity. The casualties were just “no names characters” and are not given any respect aside some cash for their families if they had them. And no, this isn’t the only instance where a moment in a sjm book talked about the gravity of a situation while spitting in that very situations face.
