Sarah J Maas, as someone whoâs now read two of her series out of love for an older sister who started finding looking for herself again after getting married, and Iâm grateful to SJM for the role sheâs played in my sisters independence. Buuuut
Thereâs multiple parts that bother me. I genuinely think sheâs capable of writing a more complex storyâif she widened her worldview. And I mean that in all senses. Sarah J Maas needs to interact more as a person and a writer with people who are completely different from her and those around her. A lot of her characters are end up being basically the same âpersonâ with different names and slightly different motives. This paired with the narcissistic tendencies of these charactersâand the real problem is that all the supporting characters enable the narcissistic behavior of these leads.
Thereâs one point where the main character loses control, kills thousands of her own new allies people, then when confronted by said ally she basically throws herself a pity party and says âhereâs my money give it to the victims families.â And then itâs done. She leaves the conversation. She doesnât even try to help or interact with those she knows she hurt.
Her partner pretty much tells the ally, âwell magic is unpredictable,â and the ally accepts it?? Itâs not brought up again and the ally remains a valuable person to the war for the remainder of the series??
Cherry on top, not even a full day after she inadvertently kills these men and women, her and her partner have sex on the beach for the first time. Overlooking the port. Where the people died. Whose deaths she caused. On the sand that was their home.
Yes this is the bare bones of the situation. But the focus was her losing control of herself and her self pity. The casualties were just âno names charactersâ and are not given any respect aside some cash for their families if they had them. And no, this isnât the only instance where a moment in a sjm book talked about the gravity of a situation while spitting in that very situations face.
And itâs because through and through, sjm characters are selfish (not the issue) and then after are validated by other characters, situations, and even rewarded for it (the issue).
